The first MEMOS 3D simulations of liquid metal motion on an inclined bulk tungsten sample transiently molten by edge-localized modes (ELMs) are reported. The exposures took place at the outer ASDEX-Upgrade divertor with the tungsten surface tangent intersecting the magnetic field at ∼ 18°. Simulations confirm that the observed poloidal melt motion is caused by the volumetric J × B force with J the bulk replacement current triggered by thermionic emission. The final erosion profile and total melt build up are reproduced by employing the escaping thermionic current dependence on the incident heat flux derived from dedicated particle-in-cell simulations. Modelling reveals that melt dynamics is governed by the volumetric Lorentz force, capillary flows due to thermal surface tension gradients and viscous deceleration. The effect of the evolving surface deformation, that locally alters the field-line inclination modifying the absorbed power flux and the escaping thermionic current, in the final surface morphology is demonstrated to be significant. The trigonometric identities for the product of two sines and the product of two cosines were first published in 1588. The discovery of the two equations, however, clearly predates that publication. Credit for priority was debated at the end of the last century and tentatively assigned to Paul Wittich of Breslau. But at least some of the conclusions reached at that time were not completely sound, even with respect to the evidence then available; and in the meantime, new evidence has come to light. Reevaluation of the issue now suggests a very questionable role for Wittich in the discovery of either equation. The first one was certainly discovered by Johannes Werner in about 1510, and probably resurrected from his papers by Wittich, while the second one appears to have been discovered from a knowledge of the first by Joost Bürgi in about 1585. But if Wittich loses one aspect of his priority in this reevaluation, he gains in another aspect. For it is now clear that Wittich had developed the method of prosthaphaeresis—the idea of using a product formula to simplify calculations—well before he arrived on Hven in 1580.

In two recent articles by Russell and Whiteside, the reception of those particular conclusions of Kepler that have come to be called his laws of planetary motion has been subjected to the first research beyond the pioneering efforts of Delambre at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Independently conceived, and directed towards quite different ends, these two investigations overlapped in only one substantial area—their survey of citations of Kepler's second law by English astronomers between 1650 and 1670. Not surprisingly, they reached essentially identical conclusions about the situation in 1670. Finding ‘equant’ theories instead of the law of areas, wherever he looked, Russell qualified his general claim ‘that the importance of Kepler's ideas during the period [up to 1666] has been greatly underestimated’, to the extent of describing the history of the second law as ‘chequered’ and ‘complicated’. And Whiteside simply reported that Kepler's scheme for reckoning motion in the elliptical orbit ‘was seemingly firmly accepted by no one, and even its formal enunciation but rarely stated in the period’.

Following a presumptive treatment with 35 mg chloroquine base/kg, 484 Namibian children between 5 months and 5 years of age received 50 mg of proguanil daily for 4 months. They were compared with 268 children living in a very adjacent area who received vitamin tablets after the initial chloroquine medication. Fewer fever episodes were recorded among the children who received proguanil and they were also requiring less presumptive treatments with chloroquine during the period of study, but there were only minor differences in parasite rate between the two groups at the end of the study period. Despite the reduction of morbidity, the required efforts were too large to justify another period of drug prophylaxis.

There are two types of 1-day field tests available for young Swedish Warmblood sport horses; one test for 3-year olds and one more advanced test for 4-year olds. Conformation, gaits and jumping ability are evaluated at both tests. Studies on various genetic parameters were based on about 20 000 tested horses. The data for 4-year olds consisted of 30 years of testing. The aims of the study were to estimate genetic parameters for results from different time periods, and to estimate heritabilities for, and genetic correlations between, traits scored in the two tests. The judgement of traits was shown to have been changed during the 30 years of testing, resulting in changes in higher heritabilities in, and stronger genetic correlations between, later time periods. In the first time period, records showed higher residual and lower genetic variances than in the subsequent time periods. Genetic correlations between traits recorded in the first and last time period deviated considerably from unity. Further studies are needed to investigate how to treat data from the early period in genetic evaluations. Heritabilities were moderate to high for conformation traits (0.24 to 0.58) at both types of tests, except for correctness of legs (0.08). The heritabilities for gait traits were also moderate to high (0.37 to 0.53). For jumping traits, the heritabilities ranged between 0.17 and 0.33. The highly positive genetic correlations (0.82 to 0.99) between corresponding traits tested at the simpler test for 3-year olds and at the ridden test of 4-year olds implied that it would be desirable to include the test results of 3-year olds into the genetic evaluation as breeding values for Swedish Warmbloods for many years has only been based on results from 4-year olds.

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.
