Keeping the Earth system in a stable and resilient state, to safeguard Earth's life support systems while ensuring that Earth's benefits, risks, and related responsibilities are equitably shared, constitutes the grand challenge for human development in the Anthropocene. Here, we describe a framework that the recently formed Earth Commission will use to define and quantify target ranges for a “safe and just corridor” that meets these goals. Although “safe” and “just” Earth system targets are interrelated, we see safe as primarily referring to a stable Earth system and just targets as being associated with meeting human needs and reducing exposure to risks. To align safe and just dimensions, we propose to address the equity dimensions of each safe target for Earth system regulating systems and processes. The more stringent of the safe or just target ranges then defines the corridor. Identifying levers of social transformation aimed at meeting the safe and just targets and challenges associated with translating the corridor to actors at multiple scales present scope for future work.

Tidal coastal wetlands are significant to the global carbon budgets through carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas (GHG; CO2, CH4 and N2O) emissions. The conversion of tidal coastal wetlands to agriculture land alters soil processes changing GHG emissions. The GHG emissions associated with land-use change are important for restoration strategies that rely upon financial incentives such as carbon credits. We measured GHG fluxes from mangroves, saltmarsh and freshwater tidal forest and their alternative agricultural lands including sugarcane and ponded pastures. We investigated seasonal variations between June 2018 and February 2020 in tropical. Australia. The wet ponded pasture had by far the highest CH4 emissions with 1,231 ± 386 mg m−2 d−1, which were 200-fold higher than any other land use. Agricultural lands were the most significant sources of N2O emissions with 55 ± 9 mg m−2 d−1 from dry ponded pasture (wet-hot period) and 11 ± 3 mg m−2 d−1 from sugar cane (hot-dry period), coinciding with fertilisation. The N2O fluxes from the tidal coastal wetlands ranged between −0.55 ± 0.23 and 2.76 ± 0.45 mg m−2 d−1 throughout the study period. The highest CO2 fluxes of 20 ± 1 g m−2 d−1 were from the dry ponded pasture during the wet-hot period, while the saltmarsh had the lowest CO2 fluxes having an uptake of −1.19 ± 0.08 g m−2 d−1 in the dry-hot period. Overall, agricultural lands had significantly higher total cumulative GHG emissions (CH4 + N2O) of 7142 to 56,124 CO2-eq kg ha−1 y−1 compared to those of any type of tidal coastal wetlands, which ranged between 144 and 884 CO2-eq kg ha−1 y−1. Converting agricultural land, particularly wet ponded pasture, to tidal coastal wetlands could provide large GHG mitigation gains and potential financial incentives.

There is growing recognition of the importance of food quality over quantity for aquatic consumers. In streams and rivers, most previous studies considered this primarily in terms of the quality of terrestrial leaf litter and importance of microbial conditioning. However, many recent studies suggest that algae are a more nutritional food source for riverine consumers than leaf litter. To date, few studies have quantified longitudinal shifts in the nutritional quality of basal food resources in river ecosystems and how these may affect consumers. We conducted a field investigation in a subalpine river ecosystem in Austria to investigate longitudinal variations in diet quality of basal food sources (submerged leaves and periphyton) and diet source dependence of stream consumers (invertebrate grazers, shredders, filterers and predators, and fish). Fatty acid (FA) profiles of basal food sources and their consumers were measured. Our results indicate systematic differences between the FA profiles of terrestrial leaves and aquatic biota, that is periphyton, invertebrates and fish. Submerged leaves contained very low proportions of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), which were conversely rich in aquatic biota. While the FA composition of submerged leaves remained similar among sites, the LC-PUFAs of periphyton increased longitudinally, which was associated with increasing nutrients from upstream to downstream. Longitudinal variations in periphyton LC-PUFAs were reflected in the LC-PUFAs of invertebrate grazers and shredders, and further tracked by invertebrate predators and fish. However, brown trout Salmo trutta contained a large proportion of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6ω3), a LC-PUFA almost entirely missing in basal sources and invertebrates. The fish accumulated eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5ω3) from invertebrate prey and may use this FA to synthesize DHA. Our results provide a nutritional perspective for river food web studies, emphasizing the importance of algal resources to consumer somatic growth and the need to account for the longitudinal shifts in the quality of these basal resources.

Despite providing considerable benefits to society, dams and weirs threaten riverine ecosystems by disrupting movement and migration of aquatic animals and degrading riverine habitats. Whilst the ecological impacts of large dams are well studied, the ecological effects of low-head weirs that are periodically drowned out by high flows are less well-understood. Here we examine the effects of a low-head weir on fine- and broad-scale movements, habitat use, and breeding behaviour of three species of native freshwater fish in the Nymboida River in coastal eastern Australia. Acoustic telemetry revealed that eastern freshwater cod (Maccullochella ikei) and eel-tailed catfish (Tandanus tandanus) made few large-scale movements, but Australian bass (Percalates novemaculeata) upstream of the weir were significantly more mobile than those below the weir. Within the weir pool, all three species displayed distinctive patterns in fine-scale movement behaviour that were likely related the deeper lentic environment created by the weir. No individuals of any species crossed the weir during the study period. Tandanus tandanus nesting behaviour varied greatly above and below the weir, where individuals in the more lentic upstream environment nested in potentially sub-optimal habitats. Our results demonstrate the potential effects of low-head weirs on movement and behaviour of freshwater fishes.

Despite their limited spatial extent, freshwater ecosystems host remarkable biodiversity, including one-third of all vertebrate species. This biodiversity is declining dramatically: Globally, wetlands are vanishing three times faster than forests, and freshwater vertebrate populations have fallen more than twice as steeply as terrestrial or marine populations. Threats to freshwater biodiversity are well documented but coordinated action to reverse the decline is lacking. We present an Emergency Recovery Plan to bend the curve of freshwater biodiversity loss. Priority actions include accelerating implementation of environmental flows; improving water quality; protecting and restoring critical habitats; managing the exploitation of freshwater ecosystem resources, especially species and riverine aggregates; preventing and controlling nonnative species invasions; and safeguarding and restoring river connectivity. We recommend adjustments to targets and indicators for the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Sustainable Development Goals and roles for national and international state and nonstate actors.

This work presents the first demonstration of atmospheric temperature measurement using the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique. While DIAL is routinely used to measure atmospheric gases such as ozone and water vapor, almost no success has been found in using DIAL to measure atmospheric temperature. Attempts to measure temperature using a well-mixed gas like oxygen (O2) have largely failed based on a need for quantitative ancillary measurements of water vapor and atmospheric aerosols. Here, a lidar is described and demonstrated that simultaneously measures O2 absorption, water vapor number density, and aerosol backscatter ratio. This combination of measurements allows for the first measurements of atmospheric temperature with useful accuracy. DIAL temperature measurements are presented to an altitude of 4 km with 225 m and 30 min resolution with accuracy better than 3 K. DIAL temperature data is compared to a co-located Raman lidar system and radiosondes to evaluate the system’s performance. Finally, an analysis of current performance characteristics is presented, which highlights pathways for future improvement of this proof-of-concept instrument.

It has generally been assumed that differential absorption lidar (DIAL) systems are incapable of measuring atmospheric temperature with useful accuracy. This assumption is a direct result of errors that arise in standard DIAL retrievals due to differential Rayleigh-Doppler broadening from aerosols and molecules. We present here, a combined high spectral resolution (HSRL) and DIAL system that addresses this identified source of uncertainty by measuring quantitative aerosol parameters as well as oxygen absorption parameters. This system, in combination with a perturbative retrieval method, accounts for the Rayleigh-Doppler broadening effects on the oxygen absorption. We describe this combined DIAL/HSRL system and retrieval to evaluate the first retrieval parameters exploring the likelihood that it is possible to measure atmospheric temperature using a DIAL system.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Montana State University (MSU) have developed a test network of five micro-pulse Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) instruments to continuously measure high-vertical-resolution water vapor in the lower atmosphere. The instruments are accurate, low-cost, operate unattended, and eye-safe – all key features to enable larger ‘national-scale’ networks needed to characterize atmo-spheric moisture variability which influences important processes related to weather and climate.

Aquatic macroinvertebrates play an important functional role in energy transfer in food webs, linking basal food sources to upper trophic levels that include fish, birds, and humans. However, the trophic coupling of nutritional quality between macroinvertebrates and their food sources is still poorly understood. We conducted a field study in subalpine streams in Austria to investigate how the nutritional quality (measured by long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, LC‐PUFAs) in macroinvertebrates changes relative to their basal food sources. Samples of macroinvertebrates, periphyton, and leaves were collected from 17 streams in July and October 2016 and their fatty acid (FA) composition was analyzed. Periphyton FA varied strongly with time and space, and their trophic effect on macroinvertebrate FA differed among functional feeding groups. The match between periphyton FA and macroinvertebrate FA decreased with increasing trophic levels, but LC‐PUFA content increased with each trophic step from periphyton to grazers and finally predators. Macroinvertebrates fed selectively on, assimilated, and/or actively controlled their LC‐PUFA, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20 : 5ω3) relative to their basal food sources in the face of spatial and temporal changes. Grazer FA profiles reflected periphyton FA with relatively good fidelity, and especially their EPA feeding strategy was primarily linked to periphyton FA variation across seasons. In contrast, shredders appeared to preferentially assimilate more EPA over other FA, which was determined by the availability of high‐quality food over seasons. Predators may more actively control their LC‐PUFA distribution with respect to different quality foods and showed less fidelity to the basal FA profiles in plants and prey. Overall, grazers and shredders showed relatively good fidelity to food FA profiles and performed as both “collectors” and “integrators” for LC‐PUFA requirements across seasons, while predators at higher trophic levels were more “integrators” with added metabolic complexity leading to somewhat more divergent FA profiles. These results are potentially applicable for other aquatic consumers in freshwater and marine ecosystems.

River channel drying caused by intermittent stream flow is a widely-recognized factor shaping stream ecosystems. There is a strong need to quantify the distribution of intermittent streams across catchments to inform management. However, observational gauge networks provide only point estimates of streamflow variation. Increasingly, this limitation is being overcome through the use of spatially contiguous estimates of the terrestrial water-balance, which can also assist in estimating runoff and streamflow at large-spatial scales. Here we proposed an approach to quantifying spatial and temporal variation in monthly flow intermittency throughout river networks in eastern Australia. We aggregated gridded (5 × 5 km) monthly water-balance data with a hierarchically nested catchment dataset to simulate catchment runoff accumulation throughout river networks from 1900 to 2016. We also predicted zero flow duration for the entire river network by developing a robust predictive model relating measured zero flow duration (% months) to environmental predictor variables (based on 43 stream gauges). We then combined these datasets by using the predicted zero flow duration from the regression model to determine appropriate ‘zero’ flow thresholds for the modelled discharge data, which varied spatially across the catchments examined. Finally, based on modelled discharge data and identified actual zero flow thresholds, we derived summary metrics describing flow intermittency across the catchment (mean flow duration and coefficient-of-variation in flow permanence from 1900 to 2016). We also classified the relative degree of flow intermittency annually to characterise temporal variation in flow intermittency. Results showed that the degree of flow intermittency varied substantially across streams in eastern Australia, ranging from perennial streams flowing permanently (11–12 months) to strongly intermittent streams flowing 4 months or less of year. Results also showed that the temporal extent of flow intermittency varied dramatically inter-annually from 1900 to 2016, with the proportion of intermittent (weakly and strongly intermittent) streams ranging in length from 3% to nearly 100% of the river network, but there was no evidence of an increasing trend towards flow intermittency over this period. Our approach to generating spatially explicit and catchment-wide estimates of streamflow intermittency can facilitate improved ecological understanding and management of intermittent streams in Australia and around the world.

Phenological responses to climate change have been widely observed and have profound and lasting effects on ecosystems and biodiversity. However, compared to terrestrial ecosystems, the long-term effects of climate change on species' phenology are poorly understood in aquatic ecosystems. Understanding the long-term changes in fish reproductive phenology is essential for predicting population dynamics and for informing management strategies, but is currently hampered by the requirement for intensive field observations and larval identification. In this study, a very low-frequency sampling of juveniles and adults combined with otolith measurements (long axis length of the first annulus; LAFA) of an endemic Tibetan Plateau fish (Gymnocypris selincuoensis) was used to examine changes in reproductive phenology associated with climate changes from the 1970s to 2000s. Assigning individual fish to their appropriate calendar year class was assisted by dendrochronological methods (crossdating). The results demonstrated that LAFA was significantly and positively associated with temperature and growing season length. To separate the effects of temperature and the growing season length on LAFA growth, measurements of larval otoliths from different sites were conducted and revealed that daily increment additions were the main contributor (46.3%), while temperature contributed less (12.0%). Using constructed water-air temperature relationships and historical air temperature records, we found that the reproductive phenology of G. selincuoensis was strongly advanced in the spring during the 1970s and 1990s, while the increased growing season length in the 2000s was mainly due to a delayed onset of winter. The reproductive phenology of G. selincuoensis advanced 2.9 days per decade on average from the 1970s to 2000s, and may have effects on recruitment success and population dynamics of this species and other biota in the ecosystem via the food web. The methods used in this study are applicable for studying reproductive phenological changes across a wide range of species and ecosystems.

Longitudinal and lateral connectivity is important for mobile aquatic species in rivers for reproductive migrations, recruitment, gene flow and access to food resources across habitat types. Water resource developments such as dams and levees may disrupt these connections, causing river fragmentation and loss of access to highly productive habitats such as floodplain wetlands. We used sulfur stable isotopes as a tracer to estimate patterns of fish movement in an unregulated river in tropical northern Australia, taking advantage of observed spatial variation in sulfur isotope values of their food resources across the catchment. We also modelled the flow and barrier related impacts of potential dam development scenarios on fish movement. Fish with isotope values significantly different from local prey values were determined to be migrants. In the ‘no dams’ scenario, movement varied among fish species (0–44% migrant fish within species where n > 5) and sites (0–40% migrant fish within sites where n > 5), and immigration was higher in more connected sites. Impacts of water resource development on fish movement varied between dam scenarios, with predictions that a dam on the main channel of the Mitchell River would have the highest impact of the three individual dam scenarios. This study provides critical information on how flow-mediated connectivity supports patterns of fish community movement in an unregulated river system. The generic quantitative approach of combining tracers of fish movement with connectivity modelling provides a powerful predictive tool. While we used sulfur stable isotopes to estimate fish movement, our approach can be used with other tracers of movement such as otoliths and acoustic telemetry, making it widely applicable to guide sustainable development in other river systems.

Sustained water level drawdown followed by rewetting has the potential to shift macrophytes from a nutrient sink to a source, but the fate of macrophyte-derived nutrients after rewetting is not well understood. We investigated the fate of released nitrogen (N) from isotopically labeled macrophyte litter over a 4-week period after rewetting. We used three treatments: (1) different species in the litter (invasive Cabomba caroliniana vs. native Hydrilla verticillata); (2) sediment desiccation history (“dried then rewetted” vs. “constantly wet”); (3) living macrophytes (presence vs. absence). Our results showed that the Cabomba litter treatment had a significantly higher percentage of macrophyte-derived 15N in the dissolved fraction of the water column and assimilated by phytoplankton (higher chlorophyll a concentrations), compared to the Hydrilla litter. The treatments with sediment desiccation also had a significantly higher percentage of 15N in the dissolved fraction and used by phytoplankton after rewetting, but less in the sediment, compared to the constantly wet treatment. The presence of living macrophytes partially reduced the 15N increase in the water column and/or sediment, but the scale of the effect was species- and biomass-dependent. Our study showed that sediment pre-desiccation changed the fate of macrophyte-derived 15N after rewetting, increasing the impact on water quality. This was further exacerbated by the presence of litter from an invasive species. This study highlights the need to manage water levels to maintain healthy macrophyte beds and thereby addressing water quality issues in lakes and reservoirs.

Gully and channel erosion are known to export large quantities of soil organic matter (SOM) to stream ecosystems. However, the implications for in-stream processing of SOM ultimately depend on its susceptibility to mineralization. We studied the influence of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) lability on fine sediment organic matter mineralization following a high flow event in a small severely eroded headwater catchment in south-eastern Queensland, Australia. High-flow event stream water was incubated for 20 days under aerobic conditions in the dark, with four treatments: control, glucose enriched, glycine enriched, and glucose + glycine enriched. Destructive sampling was carried out at 0, 2, 6, 12, and 20 days to quantify different C, N, and phosphorus (P) fractions and specific UV absorbance (a proxy for aromaticity). Net C mineralization was very slow for all treatments with rates slowing markedly towards the end of the incubation. The addition of labile N did not significantly increase net C mineralization; however, net N mineralization significantly increased with the addition of labile C in the absence of labile N. We found increasingly larger net N mineralization relative to C towards the end of the incubation, even though initial substrate stoichiometry in the control indicated that N was the limiting element. Our results suggest that SOM mineralization is limited by C and not N bioavailability. One of the main implications of our study is that mineral N exported downstream in association with gully and channel eroded sediment has little influence on the in-stream processing of eroded organic C due to slow mineralization rates and fluxes in the water column. As a consequence, this mineral N would be available for generating primary productivity in downstream aquatic ecosystems.

1. Streams and rivers provide crucial sources of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA, a subset of PUFA with ≥20 C in their acyl chains) for freshwater and terrestrial animals. LC-PUFA are primarily produced by particular algal taxa and are subsequently transferred to fish and higher consumers, including humans. Although research on the trophic transfer of LC-PUFA in streams is very limited, studies on the PUFA composition of organisms at various trophic levels within stream food webs are well documented. Here, we systematically analyze the literature to synthesise LC-PUFA distribution and retention in stream ecosystems. 2. In general, stream food webs are highly enriched in omega-3 LC-PUFA, in particular eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3). Algae from temperate rivers had more EPA compared with algae from subtropical rivers. Stream invertebrates from both temperate and subtropical rivers preferentially retain algal EPA and their PUFA tend to vary with algal PUFA. Invertebrates may be capable of regulating their fatty acid (FA) composition, but this ability is limited, to the extent that they must obtain physiologically important LC-PUFA primarily from algae. 3. DHA is selectively and highly retained in all fish taxa irrespective of their feeding sites (i.e. temperate or subtropical rivers). However, DHA content is variable among stream fish taxa and is likely linked to resource utilisation and their endogenous metabolism. Freshwater salmonids have a very high DHA content, which suggests they preferentially retain this FA or biosynthesise it from EPA. The PUFA profiles of other fish taxa more closely reflect their dietary PUFA supply. However, so far very few studies have considered the differences in the PUFA biosynthesis of fish taxa in rivers or compared the dietary PUFA effect on different fish taxa. 4. The supply of LC-PUFA from streams and rivers is known to be affected by altered light availability, greater nutrient inputs and other anthropogenic activities, and any decrease in algal LC-PUFA production will negatively affect the consumers that are nutritionally dependent on these molecules. Further investigations are needed to understand how environmental changes affect LC-PUFA production and retention in stream ecosystems, and how to protect streams from threats to this essential ecosystem service.

The structure of food webs may be strongly influenced by the distribution of top predators in space and time. The Amazon biome is the only region in the world where four alligatorid species are known to occur in sympatry, and they attain high densities in some regions. As top predators with a diverse range of prey species occupying different trophic levels, their impact upon food webs should be substantial, but the degree to which crocodilians differ in their food sources, and potentially avoid competitive exclusion where they occur syntopically is not well understood. Although most crocodilians are considered generalist opportunistic predators that feed on any source of protein available in the environment, Amazonian crocodilians show broad differences in the proportions of prey items they consume. It is believed that these differences may in part reflect habitat use, but it is unknown to what extent they represent interspecific differences in prey preferences or are a direct function of habitat selection. Stable carbon isotope data (δ13C) of crocodilians and their potential prey were used to assess differences in reliance on terrestrial versus aquatic resources. These data were then placed in a spatial context using classified maps that reflect habitat types (headwater streams, mid-order flooded-forest streams and varzea floodplains) to elucidate whether dietary differences are explained by habitat selection or are more likely a reflection of prey preferences. We found evidence for differences in types of basal resources supporting these crocodilians. Mean δ13C values were highest in Paleosuchus trigonatus (Schneider's dwarf caiman, −25.7 ± 1.2‰), intermediate in Caiman crocodilus (spectacled caiman, −27.4 ± 1.2‰) and Paleosuchus palpebrosus (Cuvier's dwarf caiman, −27.7 ± 1.1‰) and lowest in Melanosuchus niger (black caiman, −29.9 ± 1.3‰). A progressive decrease in δ13C values of crocodilian tissues occurred from headwaters to floodplains, which most likely reflects a progressive increase in autochthonous over allochthonous inputs in lower reaches of streams. The shift from terrestrial to aquatic resources sustaining these sympatric predators mirrors their spatial distribution along this ecotone. However, after taking into account the habitat in which pairs of syntopic individuals of distinct species occurred, significant differences in δ13C values suggest that P. trigonatus and P. palpebrosus have different prey bases. Thus, despite being opportunistic predators, our results show that differences in crocodilian diets likely result from prey preferences and not only from habitat selection. These findings suggest that some species of crocodilians may be less generalist than traditionally thought and their influence on terrestrial or aquatic food webs might be species specific.

Tropical floodplains are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth. Studies on floodplain productivity have primarily focused on trees and macrophytes, rather than algae, due to their greater biomass. However, epiphyton—algae and bacteria attached to the submerged portion of aquatic macrophytes—is a major source of energy in many tropical floodplains. Epiphyton productivity rates are unknown for most tropical floodplain wetlands, and spatial variability is not well understood. In this study, we measured primary productivity of epiphyton in Kakadu National Park in northern Australia. We estimated the relative contribution of epiphyton to aquatic production (epiphyton, + phytoplankton + macrophytes). We sampled sites dominated by different macrophyte structural types: vertical emerging grasses, horizontal emerging grasses, submerged macrophytes, and macrophytes with floating leaves. Epiphyton productivity was highly influenced by the structural type of the macrophyte. Highest potential productivity per weight was measured from epiphyton growing on macrophytes with floating leaves and horizontal grasses (1.52 ± 0.53 and 1.82 ± 0.61 mgC/dw g epiphyton/h, respectively) and lowest in submerged macrophytes and vertical grasses (0.57 ± 0.26 and 0.66 ± 0.47 mgC/dw g epiphyton/h, respectively). When considering the areal biomass of the macrophyte and the amount of epiphyton attached, epiphyton on horizontal grasses and submerged macrophytes had productivity values approximately ten times higher (45–219 mgC/m2/d) compared to those on vertical grasses and macrophytes with floating leaves (2–18 mgC/m2/d). Epiphyton contributed between 2 to 13 percent to the aquatic production of these tropical floodplain wetlands.

Article, 1. Many freshwater systems receive substantial inputs of terrestrial organic matter. Terrestrially derived dissolved organic carbon (t-DOC) inputs can modify light availability, the spatial distribution of primary production, heat, and oxygen in aquatic systems, as well as inorganic nutrient bioavailability. It is also well-established that some terrestrial inputs (such as invertebrates and fruits) provide highquality food resources for consumers in some systems. 2. In small to moderate-sized streams, leaf litter inputs average approximately three times greater than the autochthonous production. Conversely, in oligo/mesotrophic lakes algal production is typically five times greater than the available flux of allochthonous basal resources. 3. Terrestrial particulate organic carbon (t-POC) inputs to lakes and rivers are comprised of 80%–90% biochemically recalcitrant lignocellulose, which is highly resistant to enzymatic breakdown by animal consumers. Further, t-POC and heterotrophic bacteria lack essential biochemical compounds that are critical for rapid growth and reproduction in aquatic invertebrates and fishes. Several studies have directly shown that these resources have very low food quality for herbivorous zooplankton and benthic invertebrates. 4. Much of the nitrogen assimilated by stream consumers is probably of algal origin, even in systems where there appears to be a significant terrestrial carbon contribution. Amino acid stable isotope analyses for large river food webs indicate that most upper trophic level essential amino acids are derived from algae. Similarly profiles of essential fatty acids in consumers show a strong dependence on the algal food resources. 5. Primary production to respiration ratios are not a meaningful index to assess consumer allochthony because respiration represents an oxidised carbon flux that cannot be utilised by animal consumers. Rather, the relative importance of allochthonous subsidies for upper trophic level production should be addressed by considering the rates at which terrestrial and autochthonous resources are consumed and the growth efficiency supported by this food. 6. 1. Macrophytes play a key role in assimilating and storing nutrients in shallow aquatic ecosystems, but their capacity to act as a long-term nutrient sink can be affected by water level fluctuations. Water level drawdown in reservoirs followed by rewetting may mobilise a significant nutrient pool. These nutrients can be stored in the littoral zone in dead or dormant macrophytes, and in the desiccated sediments within the macrophyte beds. However, the contribution of desiccated macrophyte beds to nutrient release upon rewetting has not been well quantified. 2.Our study examined the effect of rewetting the previously desiccated waterlily Nymphoides indica (Menyanthaceae) in treatments (1) without sediments (N.i.−Sed), and (2) with sediments in N. indica beds (N.i.+Sed) on water quality. 3. Recent investigators have emphasized that food quality has greater importance than food quantity for herbivore somatic growth. Herbivore growth is thought to be regulated by light and nutrients through changes in food elemental ratios, but our knowledge of the mechanisms driving grazer growth in stream ecosystems is scarce. We manipulated light (through shading) and nutrients (fertilizer addition) in 3 headwater streams in southeastern Queensland, Australia, and measured the responses of natural grazer communities. The growth responses of Austrophlebioides and Helicopsyche to light and nutrients differed with their body size and periphyton food quality. Large larvae were more sensitive to increased light and nutrient availability than were small larvae. Light induced a significant negative effect on Austrophlebioides growth, and this impact increased with increasing nutrient addition. Algae are higher-quality food resources than allochthonous plant litter for stream invertebrates, in part, because of their higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). We tested the hypothesis that algal biofilms on the surfaces of leaf litter improve the nutritional quality of terrestrial inputs for invertebrate shredders. We used a laboratory feeding experiment with 2 light levels (open and shaded) and 2 nutrient regimes (ambient and enriched) to manipulate the algal biofilms that form on leaf surfaces (Lophostemon confertus). We assessed how these treatments affected the fatty acid (FA) composition of these biofilms and the somatic growth of a stream invertebrate shredder (Anisocentropus bicoloratus, Trichoptera) that feeds on the conditioned leaf litter. The Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri Krefft, 1870, is a threatened species whose long-term persistence is at risk due to land-use intensification, water resource development, and other human pressures. Changes to the hydrology of rivers has the potential to alter the availability of certain high-quality food resources for this species, that may impact recruitment success, and contribute to population declines. This study analysed the fatty acid (FA) composition of lungfish eggs and fin tissues from two locations upstream and downstream of a large dam in the Brisbane River. We tested the hypothesis that river impoundment and flow alteration associated with the dam have altered the dietary composition and the FA composition of important dietary items for N. forsteri which translates to the body tissues and eggs. The contribution of each food source was estimated with mixing models using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. The total FA content in lungfish fin and eggs was significantly higher in downstream sites compared to upstream. Few significant differences in FA contents of the nine potential lungfish food sources were found between sites upstream and downstream of the dam. Stable isotope analyses of lungfish fin tissues revealed the most likely food sources were gastropods, bivalves, and crustaceans, however their relative importance differed upstream and downstream of the dam. Collectively, these results indicate that the dam did not negatively affect food quality for lungfish downstream. The most likely mechanism for potential FA deficiency and subsequent impacts on recruitment success in N. forsteri would be due to changes to the availability of high-quality food sources. This study highlights the need for future research to determine whether the low FA contents we observed in lungfish, is a function of broader environmental changes, or if FA contents are naturally low for this sub-tropical species.

The Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, QUBIC, is an innovative experiment designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background and in particular the signature left therein by the inflationary expansion of the Universe. The expected signal is extremely faint, thus extreme sensitivity and systematic control are necessary in order to attempt this measurement. QUBIC addresses these requirements using an innovative approach combining the sensitivity of Transition Edge Sensor cryogenic bolometers, with the deep control of systematics characteristic of interferometers. This makes QUBIC unique with respect to others classical imagers experiments devoted to the CMB polarization. In this contribution we report a description of the QUBIC instrument including recent achievements and the demonstration of the bolometric interferometry performed in lab. According to the River Continuum Concept, headwater streams are richer in allochthonous (e.g. terrestrial leaves) than autochthonous (e.g. algae) sources of organic matter for consumers. However, compared to algae, leaf litter is of lower food quality, particularly omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), and would constrain the somatic growth, maintenance, and reproduction of stream invertebrates. It may be thus assumed that shredders, such as Gammarus, receive lower quality diets than grazers, e.g. Ecdyonurus, that typically feed on algae., The objective of this study was to assess the provision of dietary PUFA from leaf litter and algae to the shredder Gammarus and the grazer Ecdyonurus. Three different diets (algae, terrestrial leaves, and an algae-leaf litter mix) were supplied to these macroinvertebrates in a flume experiment for 2 weeks. To differentiate how diet sources were retained in these consumers, algae were isotopically labelled with C-13., Both consumers became enriched with C-13 in all treatments, demonstrating that both assimilated algae. For Gammarus, n-3 PUFA increased, whereas n-6 PUFA stayed constant. By contrast, the n-3 PUFA content of Ecdyonurus decreased as a consequence of declining algal supply., Results from compound-specific stable isotope analysis provided evidence that the long-chain n-3 PUFA eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in both consumers was more enriched in C-13 than the short-chain n-3 PUFA alpha-linolenic acid, suggesting that EPA was taken up directly from algae and not from heterotrophic biofilms on leaf litter. Both consumers depended on algae as their carbon and EPA source and retained their EPA from high-quality algae.

Growing human demands for water are leading to rapid increases in the frequency and severity of water scarcity, where there is insufficient water to simultaneously support both human and ecosystem water needs. Water scarcity is most often caused by limited water availability, and it is thus in arid and semiarid regions with high water demands where the problems are most acute. Within these climate zones, evapotranspiration exceeds rainfall in most years, and thus the hydrologic regime of rivers often includes prolonged periods with low or zero flows. Water scarcity can greatly exacerbate the frequency and severity of low flows, amplifying a range of potentially interacting stressors, including habitat loss, water quality declines, and increased biotic interactions that alter aquatic biota and ecosystem processes. Thus, despite many plants and animals displaying specific physiological and life-history adaptations that equip them to persist in arid ecosystems, water scarcity poses a growing threat in maintaining the structure and functioning of river environments. In this chapter, we seek to summarize the major interacting stressors that arise from water scarcity in arid and semiarid landscapes, especially the effects of habitat loss, declining water quality, and increased biological interactions. We consider both impacts their mechanistic pathways and emphasize the potential interactions with other drivers, such as land use change, in affecting riverine ecosystems. We draw on a two different case studies to demonstrate interactions between multiple stressors in these systems, as well as summarize potential mitigation strategies and future research needs.

The bony bream (Nematalosa erebi Clupeidae: Dorosomatinae) is one of Australia's most widely distributed freshwater fish species and is a key component of freshwater food webs, especially in northern Australia. We sought to better define the feeding habits of this species, previously classified as a detritivore, algivore or zooplanktivore (or combinations thereof), by undertaking meta-analyses of published accounts based on stomach content analysis and 13C and 15N stable isotope analysis. Stomach content analysis clearly indicated that detritus was the dominant food item, although benthic algae could be an important dietary component in some habitats (inland river flood plains) and during the wet season. Zooplankton were important for small fish (i.e. juveniles 13C enriched, indicating the latter source was not the dominant contributor to the biomass of this species. However, using site-specific data and a regression approach, a significant relationship was revealed between algal carbon and that of large fish, suggesting that carbon derived from benthic algae contributed ~20% of the carbon of adult bony bream. Zooplankton contributed a similar amount. Zooplankton provided the majority of carbon for small fish. We contend that detritus derived from terrestrial vegetation is the likely remaining carbon source for large bony bream, and this interpretation was supported by the outcomes of multiple regression analyses. Although previous studies of aquatic food webs in northern Australia have emphasised the importance of high-quality algal basal resources, this study indicates that terrestrial sources may be important for some species and demonstrates the need to better consider the circumstances that cause biota to switch between different food sources.

Food web subsidies from external sources ("allochthony") can support rich biological diversity and high secondary and tertiary production in aquatic systems, even those with low rates of primary production. However, animals vary in their degree of dependence on these subsidies. We examined dietary sources for aquatic animals restricted to refugial habitats (waterholes) during the dry season in Australia's wet-dry tropics, and show that allochthony is strongly size dependent. While small-bodied fishes and invertebrates derived a large proportion of their diet from autochthonous sources within the waterhole (phytoplankton, periphyton, or macrophytes), larger animals, including predatory fishes and crocodiles, demonstrated allochthony from seasonally inundated floodplains, coastal zones or the surrounding savanna. Autochthony declined roughly 10% for each order of magnitude increase in body size. The largest animals in the food web, estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus), derived ~80% of their diet from allochthonous sources. Allochthony enables crocodiles and large predatory fish to achieve high biomass, countering empirically derived expectations for negative density vs. body size relationships. These results highlight the strong degree of connectivity that exists between rivers and their floodplains in systems largely unaffected by river regulation or dams and levees, and how large iconic predators could be disproportionately affected by these human activities.

Flow regimes are fundamental to sustaining ecological characteristics of rivers worldwide, including their associated floodplains. Recent advances in understanding tropical river–floodplain ecosystems suggest that a small set of basic ecological concepts underpins their biophysical characteristics, especially the high levels of productivity, biodiversity and natural resilience. The concepts relate to (1) river-specific flow patterns, (2) processes ‘fuelled’ by a complex of locally generated carbon and nutrients seasonally mixed with carbon and nutrients from floodplains and catchments, (3) seasonal movements of biota facilitated by flood regimes, (4) food webs and overall productivity sustained by hydrological connectivity, (5) fires in the wet/dry tropical floodplains and riparian zones being major consumers of carbon and a key factor in the subsequent redistribution of nutrients, and (6) river–floodplains having inherent resilience to natural variability but only limited resilience to artificial modifications. Understanding these concepts is particularly timely in anticipating the effects of impending development that may affect tropical river–floodplains at the global scale. Australia, a region encompassing some of the last relatively undisturbed tropical riverine landscapes in the world, provides a valuable case study for understanding the productivity, diversity and resilience of tropical river–floodplain systems. However, significant knowledge gaps remain. Despite substantial recent advances in understanding, present knowledge of these highly complex tropical rivers is insufficient to predict many ecological responses to either human-generated or climate-related changes. The major research challenges identified herein (for example, those related to food web structure, nutrient transfers, productivity, connectivity and resilience), if accomplished in the next decade, will offer substantial insights toward assessing and managing ecological changes associated with human alterations to rivers and their catchments.

Isotope studies of freshwater aquatic habitats have shown that epiphytic algae in the form of periphyton provides much of the source material for the biomass of secondary aquatic producers. Consequently, methods that can quantify the seasonal abundance of periphyton are important spatial inputs for wetland management and conservation planning processes for tropical floodplains. In this study, estimation of the seasonal spatial variability in floodplain macrophyte and periphyton abundance was made for the floodplains of the Kakadu region in northern Australia. Statistical modelling, using remotely sensed information, was applied to predict the seasonal distributions of macrophyte structural types, which were then combined with the field measurements of periphyton biomass to produce seasonal distributions of floodplain periphyton biomass per unit area. The seasonal spatial distribution of periphyton was strongly influenced by the seasonal variation in macrophyte abundance. Vertical emergent macrophytes (mainly aquatic grasses), covering 70% of the floodplain in May, had the lowest periphyton abundance. Submerged macrophytes, covering 10–15% of the floodplains, had the greatest periphyton abundance. The submerged macrophytes occupied open water areas, mainly in the deeper backswamp areas on the edges of the floodplains, and these areas maintained high periphyton abundance into the dry season. This study provides explicit spatial representation of the seasonal dynamics of tropical floodplain macrophyte and periphyton abundance and presents an approach that can be applied to map ‘hotspots’ of floodplain periphyton abundance. Freshwater ecosystems are declining under climate change and land-use change. To maximize the return on investment in freshwater conservation with limited financial resources, managers must prioritize management actions that are most cost-effective. However, little is known about what these priorities may be under the combined effects of climate and land-cover change. We present a novel decision-making framework for prioritizing conservation resources to different management actions for the conservation of freshwater biodiversity. The approach is novel in that it has the ability to model interactions, rank management options for dealing with conservation threats from climate and land-cover change, and integrate empirical data with expert knowledge. We illustrate the approach using a case study in South East Queensland (SEQ), Australia under climate change, land-cover change and their combined effects. Our results show that the explicit inclusion of multiple threats and costs results in quite different priorities than when costs and interactions are ignored. When costs are not considered, stream and riparian restoration, as a single management strategy, provides the greatest overall protection of macroinvertebrate and fish richness in rural and urban areas of SEQ in response to climate change and/or urban growth. Whereas, when costs are considered, farm/land management with stream and riparian restoration are the most cost-effective strategies for macroinvertebrate and fish conservation. Our findings support riparian restoration as the most effective adaptation strategy to climate change and urban development, but because it is expensive it may often not be the most cost-efficient strategy. Our approach allows for these decisions to be evaluated explicitly.

Summary While many streams and rivers are dominated by terrestrial inputs of organic carbon, algae are an important trophic base for stream food webs. However, the nutritional importance of algae for stream invertebrates only recently has been highlighted. Algae are acknowledged as higher quality food than terrestrial organic matter for the growth and reproduction of invertebrates. In part, this is because of higher algal polyunsaturated fatty-acid (PUFA) content. Here, we review the important influence of algal food quality, as assessed by PUFA, in stream food webs. Current field investigations have mainly focused on the fatty-acid dynamics of macroinvertebrates, and indicate that algal eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), α-linolenic acid (ALA) and linoleic acids (LIN) are present in all macroinvertebrates. However, fungal and bacterial tracers have also been observed in a range of macroinvertebrates. The omega-3 (ω3)/omega-6 (ω6) ratio >1 in most macroinvertebrates strongly indicates that dietary energy of algae is highly retained in stream food webs. Interspecific differences in PUFA composition seem to be affected by dietary PUFA and consumer physiology. Some studies have suggested that besides dietary EPA, the shorter chain C18 PUFA LIN and ALA also can improve growth and reproduction of stream invertebrate consumers. Some macroinvertebrates may preferentially retain or synthesise long-chain PUFA from C18 PUFA when experiencing low-quality food. However, this process is controversial since other species have shown very limited ability to synthesise long-chain PUFA. Algal PUFA composition is strongly influenced by abiotic factors, particularly light, nutrients, and temperature. Human disturbance (i.e. riparian vegetation removal and nutrient inputs) on algal PUFA content and their consequent effects on macroinvertebrates and fish clearly warrant further scientific attention. Controlled feeding trials and manipulative studies are required to measure PUFA conversion capacities and reproductive investment of stream macroinvertebrates under different food quality conditions, which will provide insights into how freshwater species can cope with different nutritional food conditions due to human disturbance and climate change.

Trichocorixa verticalis verticalis, a North American water boatman, is the only alien corixid in European fresh waters. It has rapidly spread, becoming the dominant corixid in and around the Doñana protected area in SW Spain. Its high abundance and similar morphology to native corixids suggest that T. verticalis may impact them through competition for food. Here we used stable isotopes of nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) and Bayesian analytical tools to investigate niche partitioning between T. verticalis and the native water boatman Sigara lateralis and Sigara scripta through a combination of experimental and field data. Species sampled from permanent ponds and laboratory aquaria could be separated based on their isotopic values (δ15N and δ13C). S. lateralis consistently showed higher δ15N values than T. verticalis, suggesting that the invasive species may be feeding at a lower trophic position and relying more on herbivory than its native competitors. This was particularly true for the T. verticalis nymph stage, which showed lower δ15N values compared to adults, indicating ontogenetic dietary shifts. In contrast, native corixids and the invasive species showed similar isotopic compositions in temporary habitats at different stages in the flooding-desiccation cycle, suggesting some degree of niche overlap and a slight reduction in trophic level for S. lateralis when inhabiting ephemeral systems. The combination of experimental and field data can help elucidate trophic interactions during a biological invasion. Tropical floodplains are highly productive because of seasonal replenishment of water and nutrients, which substantially boost primary productivity. This study examined how the architecture of aquatic macrophytes affect the light and water quality and consequently the attachment and biomass of epiphytes on a floodplain in northern Australia. Results show that macrophyte structural complexity is not only important for water column light penetration but also for the development of epiphytes on macrophytes. Emergent grasses with simple vertical structure and high plant densities, limit light penetration and consequently the development and biomass of epiphytic algae. In contrast, submerged macrophytes growing just below the water surface, allow greater light penetration. The complex architecture of submerged macrophytes also provides a large surface area for the development of a dense covering of epiphytic algae. Other plant structural forms (e.g., plants with floating leaves) have a simple structure, variable light penetration and low epiphytic algae biomass. The emergent grass Pseudoraphis spinescens (R.Br.) Vickery also had low light penetration but the horizontal alignment of stems across the water surface allow greater exposure to sunlight of the stems and the consequent development of epiphytic algae. We conclude that (1) the complex structure of submerged plants effectively creates a “false bottom” in deeper waters so that they function similarly to the floodplain's littoral zone, and (2) that their extremely large surface area for attachment allows greater production of epiphytic algae than would occur on the sediment surface.

Flooding associated with tropical storms can cause extreme perturbations in riverine and coastal ecosystems. Measuring isotope variability of tropical storm events can help investigate the impacts of flooding. We measured the water isotope composition (δD and δ18O) of rain and associated floodwater collected during two storms and subsequent major and minor flooding events in the subtropical coast of eastern Australia. Compared with baseline regional rainfall isotope values of −15.0 ± 1.9‰ for δD and −3.3 ± 0.2‰ for δ18O, floodwater had lower values with −33.8 ± 2.5‰ δD and −5.1 ± 0.4‰ δ18O for the major flood and −29.4 ± 1.0‰ δD and −4.6 ± 0.1‰ δ18O for the minor flood. The low isotope composition of the floodwater was associated with the transport of large quantities of suspended sediments, with sediment loads 30 to 70 times larger than during base flow conditions. Floods carried up to 35% of the annual phosphorus and up to 208% of the currently calculated average annual nitrogen load of the Brisbane River. The dramatic changes caused by a rapid increase in discharge from 2 to 2015 m3 s−1 over 2 days in the major flood would have major consequences in riverine and coastal ecosystems of the region. Rotational spectra for two conformers of c-C3H5SiHFCH3 (cyclopropylfluoromethyl silane, CFMS) and one conformer of c-C3H5SiF2CH3 (cyclopropyldifluoromethyl silane, CDFMS) have been observed by a combination of chirped-pulse and resonant cavity Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy in the 7.5–16.5 GHz range. All rotational transitions were doubled by up to several megahertz into A and E states as a result of methyl group internal rotation, and analysis of measured transitions using a combined axis method yielded internal rotation barriers of ca. 6.0 kJ mol−1 for the two conformers of CFMS and ca. 5.2 kJ mol−1 for CDFMS, revealing a systematic decrease in the barrier as fluorine atoms are added to the silicon. Dipole moment information is also available for the CDFMS species.

Conservation planning processes and wetland management require spatial estimations of aquatic habitats to support the maintenance of aquatic biodiversity. However, physical access to several wetlands and freshwater habitats can be restricted due to difficult topography and technological limitations associated with ground-based observations. In addition to these constraints, the distribution of some aquatic primary producers in freshwater habitats and floodplains that are difficult to reach further complicates large-scale assessment of aquatic habitats using traditional field-based techniques. The main objective of this study is to predict the spatial distribution of hot spots of primary producers (aquatic plant biomass) and assess large-scale inundation patterns in a large floodplain wetland (Flinders catchment) in the wet-dry tropics of Australia. To this end, remote sensing biophysical indicators (vegetation and inundation) were integrated with flood water depth in a classification tree model. Results indicate that in terms of floodplain total inundation, the Flinders wetland hydrology is rather restricted immediately after the summer wet season, the period when most primary production happens. While this can be attributed to the fact that much of the observed annual variability (93%) in rainfall and surface runoff (95%) occur during the wet season, post flood recession patterns are indicators that underpin the somewhat limited alimentation of the Flinders floodplain during this period. As observed in this study, post flood inundation extents in the summers of 2009 and 2019 declined by approximately 89% and 87% within fourteen and ten days, respectively. Despite having a significantly higher magnitude than the 2009 summer flood event, the 2019 extreme ‘big wet’ period did not translate to higher floodplain productivity (aquatic plant biomass and surface water distribution) immediately after summer as was the case in 2009. Furthermore, the predicted extents of aquatic plant biomass and total floodplain inundation in the downstream Flinders show substantial temporal variation and suggest the floodplain wetland hydrology is largely driven by inter-annual changes in annual rainfall. The extents of these hot spots of biomass accumulation were found to be considerably associated with total floodplain inundation extent ( r = 0.94 ), rainfall ( r = 0.81 ), and discharge ( r = 0.68 ). Furthermore, advance statistical analyses show that downstream discharge and rainfall over the Flinders are significantly correlated ( r = 0.72 ). In addition to this, observed amplitudes of discharge and rainfall in extreme wet and dry years coincided with floodplain inundation patterns and distribution of hot spots of primary producers. While these relationships emphasize the importance of flow in the nourishment of the downstream catchment, they further corroborate the composite influence of local rainfall and discharge on total floodplain inundation and hot spots of primary producers.

Flooding of the terminal floodplains of northern Australian rivers provides a greatly expanded, productive habitat accessed by both freshwater and estuarine fishes. This study aimed to determine the extent to which sea catfishes (Ariidae) make use of floodplains and the reasons for doing so (i.e. spawning, feeding). Nine species were collected from floodplains and adjacent distributaries of the Mitchell and Flinders rivers; floodplain use was largely restricted to freshwater species. Evidence of prior wet season spawning was recorded for some species, and mesenteric lipid deposits indicated that fish were in good condition. However, little evidence of spawning on floodplains was found. Stomach content analysis and stable isotope analysis indicated dietary partitioning, particularly between freshwater and estuarine species, but also within freshwater species, and indicated that some species were responsive to variations in food availability. Isotope analyses suggest extensive movement between freshwater, estuarine and marine habitats at different life history stages for the catfish assemblage studied. Terminal floodplains of northern Australian rivers provide important temporary habitat for adult sea catfishes to feed upon, but do not appear to be used as spawning grounds.

The modern homeschooling movement presents an opportunity to address these challenges. Key technological enablers – fast microprocessors, high-speed internet, cloud computing, etc. – are becoming ubiquitous and cheap. Online, free curriculum, combined with translation software, presents a new paradigm. Even caregivers with limited education themselves can facilitate a learning environment in the home, wherever that home may be. While homeschooling will not work in every situation, it could quickly become an option that positively affects the future of tens of thousands of refugees.

Thermodynamic profiling using ground-based remote sensing instruments such as differential absorption lidar (DIAL) has the potential to fill observational needs for climate and weather-related research and improve weather forecasting. The DIAL technique uses the return signal resulting from atmospherically scattered light at two closely spaced wavelengths to determine the range-resolved absorption coefficient for a molecule of interest. Temperature profiles can be retrieved using a temperature-sensitive absorption feature of a molecule with a known mixing ratio such as oxygen. In order to obtain accuracies of less than 1 K, the narrowband DIAL equation must be expanded to account for Doppler broadening of molecular backscatter, and its relative contribution to the total signal, the backscatter ratio, must be known. While newly developed low-cost high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) can measure backscatter ratio with sufficient accuracy, the frequency-resolved DIAL equation, even with this information, remains transcendental, and solving it for temperature can be computationally expensive. In this paper, we present a perturbative solution to the frequency-resolved DIAL equation when we have an HSRL providing the required ancillary measurements. This technique leverages perturbative techniques commonly employed in quantum mechanics and has the ability to obtain accurate temperature profiles (better than 1 K) with low computational cost. The perturbative solution is applied to a modeled atmosphere as an initial demonstration of this retrieval technique. An initial estimate of the error in the temperature retrieval for a diode-laser-based O2 DIAL is presented, indicating that temperature retrievals with an error of less than ±1 K can be achieved in the lower troposphere. While this paper focuses on temperature measurements, the perturbative solution to the DIAL equation can also be used to improve the accuracy of retrieved number density profiles.

The trophic position of a top predator, synonymous with food-chain length, is one of the most fundamental attributes of ecosystems. Stable isotope ratios of nitrogen (δ15N) have been used to estimate trophic position of organisms due to the predictable enrichment of 15N in consumer tissues relative to their diet. Previous studies in crocodilians have found upward ontogenetic shifts in their ‘trophic position’. However, such increases are not expected from what is known about crocodilian diets because ontogenetic shifts in diet relate to taxonomic categories of prey rather than shifts to prey from higher trophic levels. When we analysed dietary information from the literature on the four Amazonian crocodilians, ontogenetic shifts in dietary-based trophic position (TPdiet) were minimal, and differed from those estimated using δ15N data (TPSIA). Thus, ontogenetic shifts in TPSIA may result not only from dietary assimilation but also from trophic discrimination factors (TDF or Δ15N) associated with body size. Using a unique TDF value to estimate trophic position of crocodilians of all sizes might obscure conclusions about ontogenetic shifts in trophic position. Our findings may change the way that researchers estimate trophic position of organisms that show orders of magnitude differences in size across their life span.

We summarize the radio synchrotron background workshop that took place July 19-21, 2017 at the University of Richmond. This first scientific meeting dedicated to the topic was convened because current measurements of the diffuse radio monopole reveal a surface brightness that is several times higher than can be straightforwardly explained by known Galactic and extragalactic sources and processes, rendering it by far the least well understood photon background at present. It was the conclusion of a majority of the participants that the radio monopole level is at or near that reported by the ARCADE 2 experiment and inferred from several absolutely calibrated zero level lower frequency radio measurements, and unanimously agreed that the production of this level of surface brightness, if confirmed, represents a major outstanding question in astrophysics.
