Abstract

Order Picker Routing is a critical issue in Warehouse Operations Management. Due to the complexity of the problem and the need for quick solutions, suboptimal algorithms are frequently employed in practice. However, Reinforcement Learning offers an appealing alternative to traditional heuristics, potentially outperforming existing methods in terms of speed and accuracy. We introduce an attention based neural network for modeling picker tours, which is trained using Reinforcement Learning. Our method is evaluated against existing heuristics across a range of problem parameters to demonstrate its efficacy. A key advantage of our proposed method is its ability to offer an option to reduce the perceived complexity of routes.

63. Correlating Intrinsic Stellar Parameters with Mg II Self-Reversal Depths

Abstract

The Mg II h&k emission lines (2803, 2796 A) are a useful tool for understanding stellar chromospheres and transition regions due to their intrinsic brightness, relatively low interstellar medium (ISM) absorption interference, and abundance of archival spectra available. Similar to other optically thick chromospheric emission lines such as H I Lya, Mg II emissions commonly present with a self-reversed line core, the depth and shape of which vary from star to star. We explore the relationship between self-reversal and the stellar atmosphere by investigating the extent that fundamental stellar parameters affect self-reversal. We present a search for correlations between photospheric parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity with the Mg II k self-reversal depth for a group of 135 FGKM main sequence stars with high-resolution near-ultraviolet spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope. We modeled the observed MgII k line profiles to correct for ISM attenuation and recover the depth of emission line's self-reversal in relation to the intensity of the line. We used the PHOENIX atmosphere code to homogeneously determine the stellar parameters by computing a suite of stellar atmosphere models that include a chromosphere and transition region, and using archival photometry to guide the models of each star. We quantify the sensitivity of the visible and near-infrared photometry to chromospheric and photospheric parameters. We find weak trends between Mg II k self-reversal depth and age, rotation period, Mg II luminosity, temperature, and mass. Abstract

Plasma-jet-driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF) is an alternative approach to controlled nuclear fusion which aims to utilize a line-replaceable dense plasma liner as a repetitive spherical compression driver. In this experiment, first measurements of the formation of a spherical Argon plasma liner formed from 36 discrete pulsed plasma jets are obtained on the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX). Properties including liner uniformity and morphology, plasma density, temperature, and ram pressure are assessed as a function of time throughout the implosion process and indicate an apparent transition from initial kinetic inter-jet interpenetration to collisional regime near stagnation times, in accordance with theoretical expectation. A lack of primary shock structures between adjacent jets during flight implies that arbitrarily smooth liners may be formed by way of corresponding improvements in jet parameters and control. The measurements facilitate the benchmarking of computational models and understanding the scaling of plasma liners towards fusion-relevant energy density.

Abstract

Methane hydrates are crystalline solids of water that contain methane molecules trapped inside their molecular cavities. Gas hydrates with methane as a guest molecule form structure I hydrates with two small dodecahedral cages and six tetra decahedral large cages. This study assesses the influence of occupation and the behavior of methane release from the molecular perspective during the dissociation process, particularly for the purpose of testing a series of molecular dynamics simulations. The dissociation cases conducted include an ideal 4 × 4 × 4 and 2 × 2 × 2 supercell methane hydrate system while inducing dissociation with two different types of temperature-rising functions for understanding the limitation and capability. These temperature-rising functions are temperature ramping and a single temperature step simulating in 5-7 various conditions. Temperature step results showed the earliest dissociation starting 50 ps into the simulation at an ΔT of 100 K, while at an ΔT of 80 K, dissociation was not observed. There was not a distinct dissociation preference observed between large and small cages, so it appears that the dissociation affects the entire structure uniformly when temperature increases are applied throughout the system rather than transport from a boundary. Temperature ramping simulations showed that the dissociation temperature increased with a higher heating rate. The mean-squared displacement results for the oxygen atoms in the water molecules at a high heating rate of 400 TK/s showed behavior similar to that for methane gas. As in the temperature step simulation, there were no clear differences in dissociation between large and small cages, which suggested homogeneous dissociation in all cases. Finally, a coordination analysis was performed on a 3 × 4 × 4 structure I methane hydrate with two free surfaces to demonstrate clear free surface boundaries and its location.

Previous studies have documented that children with newly diagnosed epilepsy often exhibit various behavioral comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, aggressive behavior, and attention that affect many aspects of their life including academic performance. Furthermore, these studies have identified distinct behavioral phenotype groups but have not investigated the trajectory of each of these groups over time. In this study we explore the presence and trajectory of behavior and academic performance in children with newly diagnosed epilepsy and their siblings over a 36-month period.

Abstract

Recording the undersea three-dimensional bioacoustic sound field in real-time promises major benefits to marine behavior studies. We describe a novel hydrophone array -- the hydroambiphone (HAP) -- that adapts ambisonic spatial-audio theory to sound propagation in ocean waters to realize many of these benefits through spatial localization and acoustic immersion. Deploying it to monitor the humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) of southeast Alaska demonstrates that HAP recording provides a qualitatively-improved experience of their undersea behaviors; revealing, for example, new aspects of social coordination during bubble-net feeding. On the practical side, spatialized hydrophone recording greatly reduces post-field analytical and computational challenges -- such as the "cocktail party problem" of distinguishing single sources in a complicated and crowded auditory environment -- that are common to field recordings. On the scientific side, comparing the HAP's capabilities to single-hydrophone and nonspatialized recordings yields new insights into the spatial information that allows animals to thrive in complex acoustic environments. Abstract

Formally verifying the properties of formal systems using a proof assistant requires justifying numerous minor lemmas about capture-avoiding substitution. Despite work on category-theoretic accounts of syntax and variable binding, raw, first-order representations of syntax, the kind considered by many practitioners and compiler frontends, have received relatively little attention. Therefore applications miss out on the benefits of category theory, most notably the promise of reusing formalized infrastructural lemmas between implementations of different systems. Our Coq framework Tealeaves provides libraries of reusable infrastructure for a raw, locally nameless representation and can be extended to other representations in a modular fashion. In this paper we give a string-diagrammatic account of decorated traversable monads (DTMs), the key abstraction implemented by Tealeaves. 69. Connecting Teachers' Language Knowledge, Perceived Ability and Instructional Practices to Grade 1 Students' Literacy Outcomes

Abstract

We examined the associations between teachers' knowledge of language and literacy constructs, perceived ability to teach early literacy skills, instructional practice, and students' early reading outcomes. The results showed that teacher knowledge predicted quality of instruction, but neither quality of instruction nor teacher knowledge were associated with stronger decoding or word reading outcomes once earlier decoding skills were controlled. Differentiation of instruction was observed more in classrooms with lower initial decoding skills, and it contributed to better decoding at Time 2. Finally, perceived ability predicted decoding and years of experience predicted word reading at Time 2.

Abstract

This article presents the findings of a qualitative study of foster carers' and multidisciplinary practitioners' perceptions of foster carers' needs and existing practices in foster care in Ireland. This study explored participants' perceptions of the development of a trauma-informed care (TIC) psychoeducational intervention for foster carers. From a purposive sample of foster carers and multidisciplinary practitioners, four focus groups were carried out. Thematic analysis revealed three themes: The Need for Trauma-informed Care, Development of Trauma-informed Care and Implementation of Trauma-informed Care. The findings have informed the development of a culturally sensitive TIC intervention for foster carers that reflect the needs and practices of the Irish foster care context.

77. I Do, I Understand: Engaging Distance and Campus Students in Sustainability through Active Learning

Abstract

Distance online learning connects students to education opportunities without having to be present at the institution offering the learning module. This case study involved development of a dual on-campus and distance course into a fully online course. It required a student-focused approach and an innovative application of learning technologies, additional resources and learning frameworks to encourage student engagement, independent learning and growth of critical-thinking skills. Changes to the design of the teaching approach and the use of technology improved the quality and quantity of interaction and communication between staff-students and students-students and facilitated a hands-on learning experience for online students interacting asynchronously. Student engagement with the course material, other students and teachers increased compared to previous years. Additional resource videos, learning and assessment guides (written and video), and online field trips helped develop critical-thinking skills and connectedness of learning to real-world applications. Recommendations are provided of learning approaches that could be used by other educators in different subject courses.
