51. URIEL+: Enhancing Linguistic Inclusion and Usability in a Typological and Multilingual Knowledge Base

Abstract: URIEL is a knowledge base offering geographical, phylogenetic, and typological vector representations for 7970 languages. It includes distance measures between these vectors for 4005 languages, which are accessible via the lang2vec tool. Despite being frequently cited, URIEL is limited in terms of linguistic inclusion and overall usability. To tackle these challenges, we introduce URIEL+, an enhanced version of URIEL and lang2vec addressing these limitations. In addition to expanding typological feature coverage for 2898 languages, URIEL+ improves user experience with robust, customizable distance calculations to better suit the needs of the users. These upgrades also offer competitive performance on downstream tasks and provide distances that better align with linguistic distance studies.

Abstract: This paper addresses the cost-efficiency aspect of Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). RLHF leverages datasets of human preferences over outputs of large language models (LLM) to instill human expectations into LLMs. While preference annotation comes with a monetized cost, the economic utility of a preference dataset has not been considered by far. What exacerbates this situation is that given complex intransitive or cyclic relationships in preference datasets, existing algorithms for fine-tuning LLMs are still far from capturing comprehensive preferences. This raises severe cost-efficiency concerns in production environments, where preference data accumulate over time. In this paper, we see the fine-tuning of LLMs as a monetized economy and introduce an auction mechanism to improve the efficiency of the preference data collection in dollar terms. We show that introducing an auction mechanism can play an essential role in enhancing the cost-efficiency of RLHF while maintaining satisfactory model performance. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed auction-based protocol is cost-efficient for fine-tuning LLMs by concentrating on high-quality feedback., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

53. Temporal Correlation between Positive-Charged Cosmic Ray Flux and Solar Magnetic Field Variation: Insights from Delayed Modulation Analysis

Abstract: We present an analysis of the time-dependent modulation of galactic cosmic rays near Earth, with a focus on the cosmic proton flux and solar magnetic field strength. Using data from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) and the Wilcox Solar Observatory, we identify a significant time-lagged relationship between the observation of two missions. Our model incorporates a weighted magnetic field parameter to address the hemispheric asymmetry in solar magnetic fields and captures the temporal evolution of cosmic-ray proton spectra in relation to solar activity. We find a time lag of approximately 10 months, varying with cosmic ray rigidity. At 1 GV, the time lag is 360 days, while it is 300 days above 3 GV. This offers predictive insights into cosmic ray modulation within the heliosphere. Abstract: A search for the very rare $B^{*0}\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B_{s}^{*0}\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decays is conducted by analysing the $B_c^+\to \pi^+\mu^+\mu^-$ process. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9$\text{\,fb}^{-1}$. The signal signatures correspond to simultaneous peaks in the $\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\pi^+\mu^+\mu^-$ invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed for either signal decay mode. 55. HelloBench: Evaluating Long Text Generation Capabilities of Large Language Models

Abstract: In recent years, Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in various tasks (e.g., long-context understanding), and many benchmarks have been proposed. However, we observe that long text generation capabilities are not well investigated. Therefore, we introduce the Hierarchical Long Text Generation Benchmark (HelloBench), a comprehensive, in-the-wild, and open-ended benchmark to evaluate LLMs' performance in generating long text. Based on Bloom's Taxonomy, HelloBench categorizes long text generation tasks into five subtasks: open-ended QA, summarization, chat, text completion, and heuristic text generation. Besides, we propose Hierarchical Long Text Evaluation (HelloEval), a human-aligned evaluation method that significantly reduces the time and effort required for human evaluation while maintaining a high correlation with human evaluation. We have conducted extensive experiments across around 30 mainstream LLMs and observed that the current LLMs lack long text generation capabilities. Specifically, first, regardless of whether the instructions include explicit or implicit length constraints, we observe that most LLMs cannot generate text that is longer than 4000 words. Second, we observe that while some LLMs can generate longer text, many issues exist (e.g., severe repetition and quality degradation). Third, to demonstrate the effectiveness of HelloEval, we compare HelloEval with traditional metrics (e.g., ROUGE, BLEU, etc.) and LLM-as-a-Judge methods, which show that HelloEval has the highest correlation with human evaluation. 56. HLB: Benchmarking LLMs' Humanlikeness in Language Use

Abstract: As synthetic data becomes increasingly prevalent in training language models, particularly through generated dialogue, concerns have emerged that these models may deviate from authentic human language patterns, potentially losing the richness and creativity inherent in human communication. This highlights the critical need to assess the humanlikeness of language models in real-world language use. In this paper, we present a comprehensive humanlikeness benchmark (HLB) evaluating 20 large language models (LLMs) using 10 psycholinguistic experiments designed to probe core linguistic aspects, including sound, word, syntax, semantics, and discourse (see https://huggingface.co/spaces/XufengDuan/HumanLikeness). To anchor these comparisons, we collected responses from over 2,000 human participants and compared them to outputs from the LLMs in these experiments. For rigorous evaluation, we developed a coding algorithm that accurately identified language use patterns, enabling the extraction of response distributions for each task. By comparing the response distributions between human participants and LLMs, we quantified humanlikeness through distributional similarity. Our results reveal fine-grained differences in how well LLMs replicate human responses across various linguistic levels. Importantly, we found that improvements in other performance metrics did not necessarily lead to greater humanlikeness, and in some cases, even resulted in a decline. By introducing psycholinguistic methods to model evaluation, this benchmark offers the first framework for systematically assessing the humanlikeness of LLMs in language use.

57. Unveiling Language Competence Neurons: A Psycholinguistic Approach to Model Interpretability

Abstract: As large language models (LLMs) become advance in their linguistic capacity, understanding how they capture aspects of language competence remains a significant challenge. This study therefore employs psycholinguistic paradigms, which are well-suited for probing deeper cognitive aspects of language processing, to explore neuron-level representations in language model across three tasks: sound-shape association, sound-gender association, and implicit causality. Our findings indicate that while GPT-2-XL struggles with the sound-shape task, it demonstrates human-like abilities in both sound-gender association and implicit causality. Targeted neuron ablation and activation manipulation reveal a crucial relationship: when GPT-2-XL displays a linguistic ability, specific neurons correspond to that competence; conversely, the absence of such an ability indicates a lack of specialized neurons. This study is the first to utilize psycholinguistic experiments to investigate deep language competence at the neuron level, providing a new level of granularity in model interpretability and insights into the internal mechanisms driving language ability in transformer based LLMs.

58. FusionANNS: An Efficient CPU/GPU Cooperative Processing Architecture for Billion-scale Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search

Abstract: Approximate nearest neighbor search (ANNS) has emerged as a crucial component of database and AI infrastructure. Ever-increasing vector datasets pose significant challenges in terms of performance, cost, and accuracy for ANNS services. None of modern ANNS systems can address these issues simultaneously. We present FusionANNS, a high-throughput, low-latency, cost-efficient, and high-accuracy ANNS system for billion-scale datasets using SSDs and only one entry-level GPU. The key idea of FusionANNS lies in CPU/GPU collaborative filtering and re-ranking mechanisms, which significantly reduce I/O operations across CPUs, GPU, and SSDs to break through the I/O performance bottleneck. Specifically, we propose three novel designs: (1) multi-tiered indexing to avoid data swapping between CPUs and GPU, (2) heuristic re-ranking to eliminate unnecessary I/Os and computations while guaranteeing high accuracy, and (3) redundant-aware I/O deduplication to further improve I/O efficiency. We implement FusionANNS and compare it with the state-of-the-art SSD-based ANNS system -- SPANN and GPU-accelerated in-memory ANNS system -- RUMMY. Experimental results show that FusionANNS achieves 1) 9.4-13.1X higher query per second (QPS) and 5.7-8.8X higher cost efficiency compared with SPANN; 2) and 2-4.9X higher QPS and 2.3-6.8X higher cost efficiency compared with RUMMY, while guaranteeing low latency and high accuracy., Comment: 15 pages, 26 figures

Due to the indefiniteness of the discretized system, it is a challenge to solve the saddle point algebraic system. For two-dimensional tied contact problem, an efficient DOFs condensation technique is developed. The essential of the proposed method is to carry out the DOFs elimination by using the tridiagonal characteristic of the mortar matrix. The scale of the linear system obtained after DOFs elimination is smaller, and the matrix is symmetric positive definite. By using the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method, the linear system can be solved efficiently. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract: This paper reviews the Challenge on Video Saliency Prediction at AIM 2024. The goal of the participants was to develop a method for predicting accurate saliency maps for the provided set of video sequences. Saliency maps are widely exploited in various applications, including video compression, quality assessment, visual perception studies, the advertising industry, etc. For this competition, a previously unused large-scale audio-visual mouse saliency (AViMoS) dataset of 1500 videos with more than 70 observers per video was collected using crowdsourced mouse tracking. The dataset collection methodology has been validated using conventional eye-tracking data and has shown high consistency. Over 30 teams registered in the challenge, and there are 7 teams that submitted the results in the final phase. The final phase solutions were tested and ranked by commonly used quality metrics on a private test subset. The results of this evaluation and the descriptions of the solutions are presented in this report. 62. Interpreting Multi-band Galaxy Observations with Large Language Model-Based Agents

Abstract: Astronomical research traditionally relies on extensive domain knowledge to interpret observations and narrow down hypotheses. We demonstrate that this process can be emulated using large language model-based agents to accelerate research workflows. We propose mephisto, a multi-agent collaboration framework that mimics human reasoning to interpret multi-band galaxy observations. mephisto interacts with the CIGALE codebase, which includes spectral energy distribution (SED) models to explain observations. In this open-world setting, mephisto learns from its self-play experience, performs tree search, and accumulates knowledge in a dynamically updated base. As a proof of concept, we apply mephisto to the latest data from the James Webb Space Telescope. mephisto attains near-human proficiency in reasoning about galaxies' physical scenarios, even when dealing with a recently discovered population of "Little Red Dot" galaxies. 63. ToxiCraft: A Novel Framework for Synthetic Generation of Harmful Information

Abstract: In different NLP tasks, detecting harmful content is crucial for online environments, especially with the growing influence of social media. However, previous research has two main issues: 1) a lack of data in low-resource settings, and 2) inconsistent definitions and criteria for judging harmful content, requiring classification models to be robust to spurious features and diverse. We propose Toxicraft, a novel framework for synthesizing datasets of harmful information to address these weaknesses. With only a small amount of seed data, our framework can generate a wide variety of synthetic, yet remarkably realistic, examples of toxic information. Experimentation across various datasets showcases a notable enhancement in detection model robustness and adaptability, surpassing or close to the gold labels. We release the generated data at Github upon acceptance.

64. Can Large Language Models Logically Predict Myocardial Infarction? Evaluation based on UK Biobank Cohort

Abstract: Background: Large language models (LLMs) have seen extraordinary advances with applications in clinical decision support. However, high-quality evidence is urgently needed on the potential and limitation of LLMs in providing accurate clinical decisions based on real-world medical data. Objective: To evaluate quantitatively whether universal state-of-the-art LLMs (ChatGPT and GPT-4) can predict the incidence risk of myocardial infarction (MI) with logical inference, and to further make comparison between various models to assess the performance of LLMs comprehensively. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, 482,310 participants recruited from 2006 to 2010 were initially included in UK Biobank database and later on resampled into a final cohort of 690 participants. For each participant, tabular data of the risk factors of MI were transformed into standardized textual descriptions for ChatGPT recognition. Responses were generated by asking ChatGPT to select a score ranging from 0 to 10 representing the risk. Chain of Thought (CoT) questioning was used to evaluate whether LLMs make prediction logically. The predictive performance of ChatGPT was compared with published medical indices, traditional machine learning models and other large language models. Conclusions: Current LLMs are not ready to be applied in clinical medicine fields. Future medical LLMs are suggested to be expert in medical domain knowledge to understand both natural languages and quantified medical data, and further make logical inferences.

65. Anisotropic Diffusion Probabilistic Model for Imbalanced Image Classification

Abstract: Real-world data often has a long-tailed distribution, where the scarcity of tail samples significantly limits the model's generalization ability. Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPM) are generative models based on stochastic differential equation theory and have demonstrated impressive performance in image classification tasks. However, existing diffusion probabilistic models do not perform satisfactorily in classifying tail classes. In this work, we propose the Anisotropic Diffusion Probabilistic Model (ADPM) for imbalanced image classification problems. We utilize the data distribution to control the diffusion speed of different class samples during the forward process, effectively improving the classification accuracy of the denoiser in the reverse process. Specifically, we provide a theoretical strategy for selecting noise levels for different categories in the diffusion process based on error analysis theory to address the imbalanced classification problem. Furthermore, we integrate global and local image prior in the forward process to enhance the model's discriminative ability in the spatial dimension, while incorporate semantic-level contextual information in the reverse process to boost the model's discriminative power and robustness. Through comparisons with state-of-the-art methods on four medical benchmark datasets, we validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in handling long-tail data. Our results confirm that the anisotropic diffusion model significantly improves the classification accuracy of rare classes while maintaining the accuracy of head classes. On the skin lesion datasets, PAD-UFES and HAM10000, the F1-scores of our method improved by 4% and 3%, respectively compared to the original diffusion probabilistic model.

66. LFP: Efficient and Accurate End-to-End Lane-Level Planning via Camera-LiDAR Fusion

Abstract: Multi-modal systems enhance performance in autonomous driving but face inefficiencies due to indiscriminate processing within each modality. Additionally, the independent feature learning of each modality lacks interaction, which results in extracted features that do not possess the complementary characteristics. These issue increases the cost of fusing redundant information across modalities. To address these challenges, we propose targeting driving-relevant elements, which reduces the volume of LiDAR features while preserving critical information. This approach enhances lane level interaction between the image and LiDAR branches, allowing for the extraction and fusion of their respective advantageous features. Building upon the camera-only framework PHP, we introduce the Lane-level camera-LiDAR Fusion Planning (LFP) method, which balances efficiency with performance by using lanes as the unit for sensor fusion. Specifically, we design three modules to enhance efficiency and performance. For efficiency, we propose an image-guided coarse lane prior generation module that forecasts the region of interest (ROI) for lanes and assigns a confidence score, guiding LiDAR processing. The LiDAR feature extraction modules leverages lane-aware priors from the image branch to guide sampling for pillar, retaining essential pillars. For performance, the lane-level cross-modal query integration and feature enhancement module uses confidence score from ROI to combine low-confidence image queries with LiDAR queries, extracting complementary depth features. These features enhance the low-confidence image features, compensating for the lack of depth. Experiments on the Carla benchmarks show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in both driving score and infraction score, with maximum improvement of 15% and 14% over existing algorithms, respectively, maintaining high frame rate of 19.27 FPS., Comment: 8 pages

67. Periodic micromagnetic finite element method

Abstract: Periodic micromagnetic finite element method (PM-FEM) is introduced to solve periodic unit cell problems using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. PM-FEM is applicable to general problems with 1D, 2D, and 3D periodicities. PM-FEM is based on a non-periodic FEM-based micromagnetic solver and extends it in several aspects to account for periodicities, including the computation of exchange and magnetostatic fields. For the exchange field, PM-FEM modifies the sparse matrix construction for computing the Laplace operator to include additional elements arising due to the periodicities. For the magnetostatic field, the periodic extensions include modifications in the local operators, such as gradient, divergence, and surface magnetic charges as well as the long-range superposition operator for computing the periodic scalar potential. The local operators are extended to account for the periodicities similar to handling the Laplace operator. For the long-range superposition operator, PM-FEM utilizes a periodic Green's function (PGF) and fast spatial convolutions. The PGF is computed rapidly via exponentially rapidly convergent sums. The spatial convolutions are accomplished via a modified fast Fourier transform based adaptive integral method that allows calculating spatial convolutions with non-uniform meshes in $O(N\log N)$ numerical operations. PM-FEM is implemented on CPU and GPU based computer architectures. PM-FEM allows efficiently handling cases of structures contained withing the periodic unit cell touching or not touching its boundaries as well as structures that protrude beyond the unit cell boundaries. PM-FEM is demonstrated to have about the same or even higher performance than its parent non-periodic code. The demonstrated numerical examples show the efficiency of PM-FEM for highly complex structures with 1D, 2D, and 3D periodicities.

68. Measuring Copyright Risks of Large Language Model via Partial Information Probing

While this approach can identify the possible use of copyrighted materials in training data, it does not directly measure infringing risks. Recent research has shifted towards testing whether LLMs can directly output copyrighted content. Addressing this direction, we investigate and assess LLMs' capacity to generate infringing content by providing them with partial information from copyrighted materials, and try to use iterative prompting to get LLMs to generate more infringing content. Specifically, we input a portion of a copyrighted text into LLMs, prompt them to complete it, and then analyze the overlap between the generated content and the original copyrighted material. Abstract: Data wrangling, the process of preparing raw data for further analysis in computational notebooks, is a crucial yet time-consuming step in data science. Code generation has the potential to automate the data wrangling process to reduce analysts' overhead by translating user intents into executable code. Precisely generating data wrangling code necessitates a comprehensive consideration of the rich context present in notebooks, including textual context, code context and data context. However, notebooks often interleave multiple non-linear analysis tasks into linear sequence of code blocks, where the contextual dependencies are not clearly reflected. Directly training models with source code blocks fails to fully exploit the contexts for accurate wrangling code generation. To bridge the gap, we aim to construct a high quality datasets with clear and rich contexts to help training models for data wrangling code generation tasks. In this work, we first propose an automated approach, CoCoMine to mine data-wrangling code generation examples with clear multi-modal contextual dependency. It first adopts data flow analysis to identify the code blocks containing data wrangling codes. Then, CoCoMine extracts the contextualized datawrangling code examples through tracing and replaying notebooks. With CoCoMine, we construct CoCoNote, a dataset containing 58,221 examples for Contextualized Data-wrangling Code generation in Notebooks. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our dataset, we finetune a range of pretrained code models and prompt various large language models on our task. Furthermore, we also propose DataCoder, which encodes data context and code&textual contexts separately to enhance code generation. Experiment results demonstrate the significance of incorporating data context in data-wrangling code generation and the effectiveness of our model. 70. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) System Level Simulations for Industry Standards

Abstract: Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging technology for wireless communications. In this paper, extensive system level simulations are conducted for analyzing the performance of multi-RIS and multi-base stations (BS) scenarios, by considering typical settings for industry standards. Pathloss and large-scale fading are taken into account when modeling the RIS cascaded link and direct link. The performance metrics are the downlink reference signal received power (RSRP) and the signal to interference noise ratio (SINR). The evaluation methodology is compatible with that utilized for technology studies in industry standards development organizations, by considering the uniqueness of RIS. The simulations are comprehensive, and they take into account different layouts of RIS panels and mobiles in a cell, and different densities and sizes of RIS panels. Several practical aspects are considered, including the interference between RIS panels, the phase quantization of RIS elements, and the failure of RIS elements. The near field effect of the RIS-mobile links is also analyzed as well. 71. Electromagnetic Duality for Line Defect Correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills Theory

Abstract: We study particular integrated correlation functions of two superconformal primary operators of the stress tensor multiplet in the presence of a half-BPS line defect labelled by electromagnetic charges $(p,q)$ in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) with gauge group $SU(N)$. An important consequence of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ electromagnetic duality in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM is that correlators of line defect operators with different charges $(p,q)$ must be related in a non-trivial manner when the complex coupling $\tau=\theta/(2\pi)+4\pi i /g_{_{\rm YM}}^2$ is transformed appropriately. In this work we introduce a novel class of real-analytic functions whose automorphic properties with respect to ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ match the expected transformations of line defect operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM under electromagnetic duality. At large $N$ and fixed $\tau$, the correlation functions we consider are related to scattering amplitudes of two gravitons from extended $(p,q)$-strings in the holographic dual type IIB superstring theory. We show that the large-$N$ expansion coefficients of the integrated two-point line defect correlators are given by finite linear combinations with rational coefficients of elements belonging to this class of automorphic functions. On the other hand, for any fixed value of $N$ we conjecture that the line defect integrated correlators can be expressed as formal infinite series over such automorphic functions. The resummation of this series produces a simple lattice sum representation for the integrated line defect correlator that manifests its automorphic properties. We explicitly demonstrate this construction for the cases with gauge group $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$. 72. LLM-Measure: Generating Valid, Consistent, and Reproducible Text-Based Measures for Social Science Research

Abstract: The increasing use of text as data in social science research necessitates the development of valid, consistent, reproducible, and efficient methods for generating text-based concept measures. This paper presents a novel method that leverages the internal hidden states of large language models (LLMs) to generate these concept measures. Specifically, the proposed method learns a concept vector that captures how the LLM internally represents the target concept, then estimates the concept value for text data by projecting the text's LLM hidden states onto the concept vector. Three replication studies demonstrate the method's effectiveness in producing highly valid, consistent, and reproducible text-based measures across various social science research contexts, highlighting its potential as a valuable tool for the research community.

Abstract: The differential branching fraction and angular coefficients of \ensuremath{\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \rightarrow pK^-\mu^+\mu^-}\xspace decays are measured in bins of the dimuon mass squared and dihadron mass. The analysis is performed using a data set corresponding to 9$\aunit{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the $\mbox{LHCb}$ detector between 2011 and 2018. The data are consistent with receiving contributions from a mixture of $\it{\Lambda}$ resonances with different spin-parity quantum numbers. 74. Theory of magnetism for rare-earth magnets on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with non-Kramers ions

Abstract: Motivated by the rapid experimental progress on the rare-earth Shastry-Sutherland lattice magnets, we propose a generic effective spin model that describes interacting non-Kramers local moments on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. We point out that the local moments consist of both magnetic dipole and quadrupole components and the effective model turns out to be an extended XYZ model with an intrinsic field that accounts for the crystal field splitting. We then study the ground-state phase diagram of the model and find that pure quadrupole orders, which are invisible to conventional experimental probes, can be stabilized over a broad regime. In particular, we show that a hidden ``1/3 magnetization plateau'' with quadrupole orders generally exists and discuss its experimental signatures. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our results to the rare-earth Shastry-Sutherland lattice magnets Pr$_{2}$Ga$_{2}$BeO$_{7}$ and Pr$_{2}$Be$_{2}$GeO$_{7}$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

75. Linguistic Minimal Pairs Elicit Linguistic Similarity in Large Language Models

Abstract: We introduce a novel analysis that leverages linguistic minimal pairs to probe the internal linguistic representations of Large Language Models (LLMs). By measuring the similarity between LLM activation differences across minimal pairs, we quantify the and gain insight into the linguistic knowledge captured by LLMs. Our large-scale experiments, spanning 100+ LLMs and 150k minimal pairs in three languages, reveal properties of linguistic similarity from four key aspects: consistency across LLMs, relation to theoretical categorizations, dependency to semantic context, and cross-lingual alignment of relevant phenomena. Our findings suggest that 1) linguistic similarity is significantly influenced by training data exposure, leading to higher cross-LLM agreement in higher-resource languages. 2) Linguistic similarity strongly aligns with fine-grained theoretical linguistic categories but weakly with broader ones. 3) Linguistic similarity shows a weak correlation with semantic similarity, showing its context-dependent nature. 4) LLMs exhibit limited cross-lingual alignment in their understanding of relevant linguistic phenomena. 76. Self-Supervised Pre-training Tasks for an fMRI Time-series Transformer in Autism Detection

Abstract: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that encompasses a wide variety of symptoms and degrees of impairment, which makes the diagnosis and treatment challenging. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been extensively used to study brain activity in ASD, and machine learning methods have been applied to analyze resting state fMRI (rs-fMRI) data. However, fewer studies have explored the recent transformer-based models on rs-fMRI data. Given the superiority of transformer models in capturing long-range dependencies in sequence data, we have developed a transformer-based self-supervised framework that directly analyzes time-series fMRI data without computing functional connectivity. To address over-fitting in small datasets and enhance the model performance, we propose self-supervised pre-training tasks to reconstruct the randomly masked fMRI time-series data, investigating the effects of various masking strategies. We then finetune the model for the ASD classification task and evaluate it using two public datasets and five-fold cross-validation with different amounts of training data. The experiments show that randomly masking entire ROIs gives better model performance than randomly masking time points in the pre-training step, resulting in an average improvement of 10.8% for AUC and 9.3% for subject accuracy compared with the transformer model trained from scratch across different levels of training data availability. 80. RUIE: Retrieval-based Unified Information Extraction using Large Language Model

Abstract: Unified information extraction (UIE) aims to complete all information extraction tasks using a single model or framework. While previous work has primarily focused on instruction-tuning large language models (LLMs) with constructed datasets, these methods require significant computational resources and struggle to generalize to unseen tasks. To address these limitations, we propose RUIE (Retrieval-based Unified Information Extraction), a framework that leverages in-context learning to enable rapid generalization while reducing computational costs. The key challenge in RUIE is selecting the most beneficial demonstrations for LLMs to effectively handle diverse IE tasks. To achieve this, we integrate LLM preferences for ranking candidate demonstrations and design a keyword-enhanced reward model to capture fine-grained relationships between queries and demonstrations. We then train a bi-encoder retriever for UIE through contrastive learning and knowledge distillation. To the best of our knowledge, RUIE is the first trainable retrieval framework for UIE. Experimental results on 8 held-out datasets demonstrate RUIE's effectiveness in generalizing to unseen tasks, with average F1-score improvements of 19.22 and 3.13 compared to instruction-tuning methods and other retrievers, respectively. Abstract: Query reformulation is a well-known problem in Information Retrieval (IR) aimed at enhancing single search successful completion rate by automatically modifying user's input query. Recent methods leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) to improve query reformulation, but often generate limited and redundant expansions, potentially constraining their effectiveness in capturing diverse intents. In this paper, we propose GenCRF: a Generative Clustering and Reformulation Framework to capture diverse intentions adaptively based on multiple differentiated, well-generated queries in the retrieval phase for the first time. GenCRF leverages LLMs to generate variable queries from the initial query using customized prompts, then clusters them into groups to distinctly represent diverse intents. Furthermore, the framework explores to combine diverse intents query with innovative weighted aggregation strategies to optimize retrieval performance and crucially integrates a novel Query Evaluation Rewarding Model (QERM) to refine the process through feedback loops. Empirical experiments on the BEIR benchmark demonstrate that GenCRF achieves state-of-the-art performance, surpassing previous query reformulation SOTAs by up to 12% on nDCG@10. These techniques can be adapted to various LLMs, significantly boosting retriever performance and advancing the field of Information Retrieval.

82. 3DIOC: Direct Data-Driven Inverse Optimal Control for LTI Systems

Abstract: This paper develops a direct data-driven inverse optimal control (3DIOC) algorithm for the linear time-invariant (LTI) system who conducts a linear quadratic (LQ) control, where the underlying objective function is learned directly from measured input-output trajectories without system identification. By introducing the Fundamental Lemma, we establish the input-output representation of the LTI system. We accordingly propose a model-free optimality necessary condition for the forward LQ problem to build a connection between the objective function and collected data, with which the inverse optimal control problem is solved. We further improve the algorithm so that it requires a less computation and data. Identifiability condition and perturbation analysis are provided. Simulations demonstrate the efficiency and performance of our algorithms.

83. $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold and signals for the hidden charm pentaquarks

Abstract: We study the $J/\psi$ photoproduction $\gamma p\to J/\psi p$ near threshold to investigate the role played by the open charm channels and possible signals from the hidden charm $P_c$ pentaquark states. With the diffractive mechanism described by a Pomeron exchange model extrapolated from high energies to the lower energy region, it shows that the differential cross sections compared with the recent results from the GlueX Collaboration have apparent deficits in the large scattering angles. The inclusion of the open charm channels and intermediate $P_c$ states can significantly improve the descriptions of the differential cross section data, in particular, at the energy regions of the $\Lambda_c\bar{D}^{(*)}$ thresholds. This can explain the structures observed by the GlueX Collaboration at the $\Lambda_c\bar{D}^{(*)}$ thresholds as the open charm CUSP effects. Given that these $P_c$ pentaquark states are hadronic molecules dynamically generated by the $\Sigma_c\bar{D}^{(*)}$, we find that the production of these $P_c$ states should be suppressed at leading order since their couplings to both $\gamma p$ and $J/\psi p$ are through loop transitions. This can explain why no obvious signals for the $P_c$ states are observed by the present datasets. In order to further disentangling the role played by $s$-channel mechanisms, we also investigate the polarized beam asymmetry which shows sensitivities to the open charm threshold effects and interferences from the $P_c$ productions. Abstract: This paper presents a novel volume of fluid ghost-cell immersed boundary (IB) method for two-phase free surface flow interacting with structures. To circumvent the disturbance occurring around the intersection area of the IB and free surface when using the interpolation method for variable reconstruction, the fluid-structure interaction is firstly considered with the orthogonal IB by mimicking the imposition of boundary conditions in the body-conformal grid method. Treatments are subsequently performed to account for the non-orthogonal effect in accurately simulating the FSI, including the newly proposed flux-scaling and IB velocity re-evaluation methods. Further, a variable smoothing process and a flux correction method are adapted to handle moving boundary cases. Based on OpenFOAM, a two-phase flow solver has been developed. Both stationary and moving immersed boundary cases are used for validations. 85. Federated One-Shot Ensemble Clustering

Abstract: Cluster analysis across multiple institutions poses significant challenges due to data-sharing restrictions. To overcome these limitations, we introduce the Federated One-shot Ensemble Clustering (FONT) algorithm, a novel solution tailored for multi-site analyses under such constraints. FONT requires only a single round of communication between sites and ensures privacy by exchanging only fitted model parameters and class labels. The algorithm combines locally fitted clustering models into a data-adaptive ensemble, making it broadly applicable to various clustering techniques and robust to differences in cluster proportions across sites. Our theoretical analysis validates the effectiveness of the data-adaptive weights learned by FONT, and simulation studies demonstrate its superior performance compared to existing benchmark methods. We applied FONT to identify subgroups of patients with rheumatoid arthritis across two health systems, revealing improved consistency of patient clusters across sites, while locally fitted clusters proved less transferable. FONT is particularly well-suited for real-world applications with stringent communication and privacy constraints, offering a scalable and practical solution for multi-site clustering.

86. EZIGen: Enhancing zero-shot subject-driven image generation with precise subject encoding and decoupled guidance

Abstract: Zero-shot subject-driven image generation aims to produce images that incorporate a subject from a given example image. The challenge lies in preserving the subject's identity while aligning with the text prompt which often requires modifying certain aspects of the subject's appearance. Despite advancements in diffusion model based methods, existing approaches still struggle to balance identity preservation with text prompt alignment. In this study, we conducted an in-depth investigation into this issue and uncovered key insights for achieving effective identity preservation while maintaining a strong balance. Our key findings include: (1) the design of the subject image encoder significantly impacts identity preservation quality, and (2) separating text and subject guidance is crucial for both text alignment and identity preservation. Building on these insights, we introduce a new approach called EZIGen, which employs two main strategies: a carefully crafted subject image Encoder based on the pretrained UNet of the Stable Diffusion model to ensure high-quality identity transfer, following a process that decouples the guidance stages and iteratively refines the initial image layout. Through these strategies, EZIGen achieves state-of-the-art results on multiple subject-driven benchmarks with a unified model and 100 times less training data. Abstract: One of the most important issues in modern condensed matter physics is the realization of fractionalized excitations, such as the Majorana excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. To this aim, the 3d-based Kitaev material Na2Co2TeO6 is a promising candidate whose magnetic phase diagram of B // a* contains a field-induced intermediate magnetically disordered phase within 7.5 T < |B| < 10 T. The experimental observations, including the restoration of the crystalline point group symmetry in the angle-dependent torque and the coexisting magnon excitations and spinon-continuum in the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum, provide strong evidence that this disordered phase is a field induced quantum spin liquid with partially polarized spins. Our variational Monte Carlo simulation with the effective K-J1-{\Gamma}-{\Gamma}'-J3 model reproduces the experimental data and further supports this conclusion.

Abstract: This study investigates the 5$f$-electron-conduction electron hybridization process in the heavy fermion superconductor UPd$_2$Al$_3$ using a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-PES). ARPES measurements reveal the formation of a hybridization gap at a temperature of approximately 75 K, which becomes more pronounced as the temperature decreases. Notably, the persistence of a flat U 5$f$ band at temperatures well above the hybridization onset challenges conventional understanding. Our findings demonstrate a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the quasiparticle relaxation time, with an anomalous decrease at 20 K, suggesting complex electronic and magnetic interactions. 89. A 2D T-carbon 2-(111) structure with tunable electric and optical properties via chemical decorations: a first-principles investigation

Abstract: We proposed a new two-dimensional carbon material named 2-(111) planar T-carbon, which is obtained by slicing bulk T-carbon along its (111) crystallographic direction. 2-(111) planar T-carbon's optical and electrical properties can be engineered via surface decoration. Comparing the DFT phonon spectra of pristine and five decorated 2-(111) planar T-carbon obtained by first-principles calculations, we conclude that surface decoration presents a promising, effective, and feasible strategy to improve the structural stability of 2-(111) planar T-carbon. The calculated band structures and electronic properties show direct electronic band gap values between 0.17 eV (-O= decorated) and 2.21 eV (Hydrogenated). Chemical decoration also promises blue or red energy shifts in its optical properties.

Abstract: The evolution of photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) from anoxygenic bacteria to oxygenic cyanobacteria and plants reflects their structural and functional adaptation to environmental conditions. Chirality plays a significant role in influencing the arrangement and function of key molecules in these RCs. This study investigates chirality-related energy transfer in two distinct RCs: Thermochromatium tepidum (BRC) and Thermosynechococcus vulcanus (PSII RC) using two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES). Circularly polarized laser pulses reveal transient chiral dynamics, with 2DCD spectroscopy highlighting chiral contributions. BRC displays more complex chiral behavior, while PSII RC shows faster coherence decay, possibly as an adaptation to oxidative stress. Comparing the chiral dynamics of BRC and PSII RC provides insights into photosynthetic protein evolution and function.

Abstract: Pansharpening is a challenging image fusion task that involves restoring images using two different modalities: low-resolution multispectral images (LRMS) and high-resolution panchromatic (PAN). Many end-to-end specialized models based on deep learning (DL) have been proposed, yet the scale and performance of these models are limited by the size of dataset. Given the superior parameter scales and feature representations of pre-trained models, they exhibit outstanding performance when transferred to downstream tasks with small datasets. Therefore, we propose an efficient fine-tuning method, namely PanAdapter, which utilizes additional advanced semantic information from pre-trained models to alleviate the issue of small-scale datasets in pansharpening tasks. Specifically, targeting the large domain discrepancy between image restoration and pansharpening tasks, the PanAdapter adopts a two-stage training strategy for progressively adapting to the downstream task. In the first stage, we fine-tune the pre-trained CNN model and extract task-specific priors at two scales by proposed Local Prior Extraction (LPE) module. In the second stage, we feed the extracted two-scale priors into two branches of cascaded adapters respectively. At each adapter, we design two parameter-efficient modules for allowing the two branches to interact and be injected into the frozen pre-trained VisionTransformer (ViT) blocks. We demonstrate that by only training the proposed LPE modules and adapters with a small number of parameters, our approach can benefit from pre-trained image restoration models and achieve state-of-the-art performance in several benchmark pansharpening datasets. 92. FAST Observations of Four Comets to Search for the Molecular Line Emissions between 1.0 and 1.5 GHz Frequencies

Abstract: We used the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) to search for the molecular emissions in the L-band between 1.0 and 1.5 GHz toward four comets, C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE), C/2020 R4 (ATLAS), C/2021 A1 (Leonard), and 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko during or after their perihelion passages. Thousands of molecular transition lines fall in this low-frequency range, many attributed to complex organic or prebiotic molecules. We conducted a blind search for the possible molecular lines in this frequency range in those comets and could not identify clear signals of molecular emissions in the data. Although several molecules have been detected at high frequencies of great than 100 GHz in comets, our results confirm that it is challenging to detect molecular transitions in the L-band frequency ranges. The non-detection of L-band molecular lines in the cometary environment could rule out the possibility of unusually strong lines, which could be caused by the masers or non-LTE effects. Although the line strengths are predicted to be weak, for FAST, using the ultra-wide bandwidth receiver and improving the radio frequency interference environments would enhance the detectability of those molecular transitions at low frequencies in the future., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in RAA

Abstract: The ${{\Xi}_{b}^{0(-)}\to{\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}(\to D^{+(0)}{\Lambda}){\pi}^{-}}$ decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of ${\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, recorded by the~$\text{LHCb}$ experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the ${\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined to be $3/2^{+}$ with a significance of more than $6.5\sigma$ ($3.5\sigma$) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the ${{\Xi}_{b}^{0(-)}\to{\Xi}_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}{\pi}^{-}}$ transitions are measured to be $-0.92\pm0.10\pm0.05$ ($-0.92\pm0.16\pm0.22$), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. 94. Towards Building a Robust Knowledge Intensive Question Answering Model with Large Language Models

Abstract: The development of LLMs has greatly enhanced the intelligence and fluency of question answering, while the emergence of retrieval enhancement has enabled models to better utilize external information. However, the presence of noise and errors in retrieved information poses challenges to the robustness of LLMs. In this work, to evaluate the model's performance under multiple interferences, we first construct a dataset based on machine reading comprehension datasets simulating various scenarios, including critical information absence, noise, and conflicts. To address the issue of model accuracy decline caused by noisy external information, we propose a data augmentation-based fine-tuning method to enhance LLM's robustness against noise. Additionally, contrastive learning approach is utilized to preserve the model's discrimination capability of external information. We have conducted experiments on both existing LLMs and our approach, the results are evaluated by GPT-4, which indicates that our proposed methods improve model robustness while strengthening the model's discrimination capability., Comment: This paper has been accepted by NLPCC-2024

95. SCARF: Scalable Continual Learning Framework for Memory-efficient Multiple Neural Radiance Fields

Abstract: This paper introduces a novel continual learning framework for synthesising novel views of multiple scenes, learning multiple 3D scenes incrementally, and updating the network parameters only with the training data of the upcoming new scene. We build on Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), which uses multi-layer perceptron to model the density and radiance field of a scene as the implicit function. While NeRF and its extensions have shown a powerful capability of rendering photo-realistic novel views in a single 3D scene, managing these growing 3D NeRF assets efficiently is a new scientific problem. Very few works focus on the efficient representation or continuous learning capability of multiple scenes, which is crucial for the practical applications of NeRF. To achieve these goals, our key idea is to represent multiple scenes as the linear combination of a cross-scene weight matrix and a set of scene-specific weight matrices generated from a global parameter generator. Furthermore, we propose an uncertain surface knowledge distillation strategy to transfer the radiance field knowledge of previous scenes to the new model. Representing multiple 3D scenes with such weight matrices significantly reduces memory requirements. At the same time, the uncertain surface distillation strategy greatly overcomes the catastrophic forgetting problem and maintains the photo-realistic rendering quality of previous scenes. Experiments show that the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art rendering quality of continual learning NeRF on NeRF-Synthetic, LLFF, and TanksAndTemples datasets while preserving extra low storage cost.

96. Strong gravitational lensing in a Kerr black hole within Quantum Einstein Gravity

Abstract: The detailed study of the strong gravitational lensing of a Kerr black hole within Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is performed. We calculate the photon sphere, the deflection angle of light, and observables on the equatorial plane under the strong deflection limit in a vacuum. The presence of quantum effects reduces the radius of the photon sphere, the magnification, the position of relativistic images, and the time delays on the same side of the lens. However, it increases the strong deflection angle, the separations, and the time delays on the opposite side of the lens. By modeling M87* and Sgr A* as the Kerr black hole within QEG, we find that the time delays are more significant in M87*, while other observables are more pronounced in Sgr A*. Furthermore, we consider the influence of plasma on the gravitational lensing effect. Plasma causes an additional deflection of light, increasing the magnification, images position and the time delays, but decreasing the separations. More importantly, we calculate the time delays under the strong deflection limit in the presence of plasma, and they increase with higher plasma concentrations. Our research may help to evaluate the observational imprints left by such quantum effects in the propagation of light and the impact of plasma around black holes on gravitational lensing., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production of $J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^-$ processes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 $ TeV with 2016-2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity $2<\eta_{\mu^\pm} < 4.5$) and mesons in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$. 98. Interpretable mixture of experts for time series prediction under recurrent and non-recurrent conditions

Abstract: Non-recurrent conditions caused by incidents are different from recurrent conditions that follow periodic patterns. Existing traffic speed prediction studies are incident-agnostic and use one single model to learn all possible patterns from these drastically diverse conditions. This study proposes a novel Mixture of Experts (MoE) model to improve traffic speed prediction under two separate conditions, recurrent and non-recurrent (i.e., with and without incidents). The MoE leverages separate recurrent and non-recurrent expert models (Temporal Fusion Transformers) to capture the distinct patterns of each traffic condition. Additionally, we propose a training pipeline for non-recurrent models to remedy the limited data issues. To train our model, multi-source datasets, including traffic speed, incident reports, and weather data, are integrated and processed to be informative features. Evaluations on a real road network demonstrate that the MoE achieves lower errors compared to other benchmark algorithms. The model predictions are interpreted in terms of temporal dependencies and variable importance in each condition separately to shed light on the differences between recurrent and non-recurrent conditions.

Abstract: A time-dependent, flavour-tagged measurement of $CP$ violation is performed with ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ and ${B^{0}_{s}}\rightarrow{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}$ decays, using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. In ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays the $CP$-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align} S_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = -0.552 \pm 0.100\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}, \nonumber \newline C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $\phi_{s}$ and $|\lambda|$ results in \begin{align} \phi_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline |\lambda_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels. Abstract: A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b\to\it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-(h=\pi, K)$, followed by $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{\Lambda} h^+$ with $\it{\Lambda}\to \it{p} \pi^-$ or $\it{\Lambda}_c^+\to\it{p}\it{K}^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 $\mathrm{Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ($C\!P$) asymmetries are measured, with no significant $C\!P$ violation observed. For the first time, the $\it{\Lambda}^\mathrm{0}_b \to \it{\Lambda}_c^+ h^-$ decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters $\alpha, \beta$ and $\gamma$ are obtained for $\it{\Lambda}_c^+$ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon $\it{\Lambda}$ decay is provided.
