The subfamily Cyclidiinae from China is reviewed: two genera and seven species are reported from China. One new subspecies, Cyclidia fractifasciata indistincta subsp. n., is described. Two new synonyms are established: Cyclidia substigmaria (Hübner, 1831) (= Cyclidia substigmaria brunna Chu & Wang, 1987, syn. n. = Cyclidia tetraspota Chu & Wang, 1987, syn. n.). One misidentification in Chu & Wang (1987) is corrected. Identification keys and diagnoses for all discussed Chinese species are provided. External features and genitalia are depicted. In addition, results of DNA barcoding for five taxa of Cyclidia are briefly discussed.

This study contributes to the Heterocera fauna of eastern Turkey. The paper presents a faunal list of 208 moth species belonging to 15 families, Arctiidae, Ctenuchidae, Cossidae, Drepanidae, Lasiocampidae, Lemoniidae, Lymantriidae, Notodontidae, Noctuidae, Psychidae, Pyralidae, Sphingidae, Thaumetopoeidae, Thyatiridae and Zygaenidae from Maden district of Elazığ Province. Among these moths, 150 species are recorded for the first time in Elazığ Province. The moth fauna of Turkey is represented by 5158 species in 67 families (Koçak & Kemal, 2018). Information on the Turkish Lepidoptera fauna mostly based on the taxonomic and faunistic investigations. However, significant studies have been conducted in terms of finding out of the Turkish moth fauna. In this respect, examined and evaluated articles on the Heterocera fauna of Turkey and in point of the research region, are as follows: Staudinger .

In Peninsular Malaysia, there were not much research conducted on the diversity and composition of moths. Thus, a study was conducted to investigate the abundance and diversity of the moths species at Kenyir Lake, situated in the Taman Negara Terengganu. Sampling was conducted continuously for three night starting from 10 March 2011 to 12 March 2011 with a light trap that was set up before dusk until midnight. A total of 179 individuals from 34 species, and 33 genus were identified from 13 families. Majority of the moth were from the family Lymantriidae (76%), followed by Arctiidae (4%), Geometridae (4%), Limacodidae (3%), Sphingidae (3%), Saturniidae (2%), Bombycidae (1%), Lasiocampidae (1%) and Nolidae (1%). Three families were recorded as the least abundant family and were represented by singletons during the study namely Drepanidae (0.6%), Notodontidae (0.6%) and Uraniidae (0.6%). In addition, results shown that the genus Nygmia (72.5%) was the dominant genus found at Kenyir. The Shannon and Fisher Alpha Diversity Index calculated were H′ = 1.53 and α-diversity 12.44 respectively, with species richness (D) and species evenness (J) calculated were D = 2.54 and J = 0.43. For this study, the preliminary checklist of the moth species at Kenyir was established and an initial result of the moth diversity and composition obtained. As such, this study will be a baseline to initiate more studies conducted on moth diversity in Terengganu.

The masked birch caterpillar, Drepana arcuata (Lepidoptera: Drepanidae) is an excellent model for studying vibratory communication and sociality in larval insects. Vibratory communication occurs throughout development, but the functions of signals are reported to change as larvae change from gregarious to solitary lifestyles. To better understand the sensory ecology of these caterpillars, it is important to study their life history. Here, we describe the morphological and behavioral characteristics of larvae by confirming the number of instars, identifying their distinguishing morphological features, and noting changes in feeding and shelter construction. Five instars were confirmed based on the number of head capsules collected for individuals throughout development, and by using Dyar’s rule, which predicts the number of instars based on geometric growth patterns of head capsules. Frequency distributions of head capsule widths showed five separate peaks, indicating that this is a useful parameter for distinguishing between instars. Other morphological features including body length, shape, and banding patterns of head capsules, and morphology of thoracic verrucae are helpful in distinguishing among instars. Feeding behavior changes from leaf skeletonization in first and second instars to leaf cutting in fourth and fifth instars, with third instars transitioning between these feeding styles as they grow. Early instars typically construct communal silken shelters whereas late instars live solitarily in leaf shelters. These results provide essential life history information on the masked birch caterpillar that will enable future investigations on the proximate and ultimate mechanisms associated with social behavior and communication in larval insects.

Forewing with darker black ground color with sporadical white patterns, postmedial line indistinct, conspicuous black dots on veins arranged into crosslines. Description. Male and female adults: Small-sized, wingspan 38–39 mm, length of forewing 16–17 mm. Head hairy, eyes large and naked, frons with white hairy tuft, palpi, collar and metathorax all with white-black hairs. Antenna lamellate, brown, white-black scales at lateral. Abdomen slender, dark, covered with short hairs. Forewing relatively short and broad, usually black ground color with sporadical white patterns, less apex pointed, outer margin evenly arcuate with white-black scales. Forewings without obvious partition, just indistinctly pale postmedial band, costa with some white patterns in order, reniform spot and orbicular spot reduce. Antemedial area with clear white pattern. Hindwings pale-white, pale scales mainly in the outside, inside with white scales. These external characteristics are also appropriate for female. Male genitalia: Uncus short, apically round. Socii long with a fine terminal hook, and far from the base of uncus. Tegumen broad and well-developed. Fultura superior belt-shaped, light sclerotized, broader at the lower part. Valva relatively broad, with almost parallel margins, cucullus with apically round, smooth, saccular part sclerotized and with spinulate extensions. Fultura inferior arch. Aedeagus medium-long, simple, carina with a hook, cornuti field easily removable and consisted of fine cornuti. Female genitalia: The whole of female genitalia is simple, typical thyatirid-like. Papillae anales sclerotized, simple, with long apophyses posteriors. Eighth abdominal segment sclerotized with longer apophyses anteriores. Ostium bursae with two symmetrical sclerotized plates. Ostial part, ductus bursae and corpus bursae membranous, signum single, long bar-shaped. Distribution. China (Yunnan). Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from Naxi referring to the minority ethnic groups living in the northwest of Yunnan and the southwest of Sichuan. Remarks. The genitalia of the genus Parapsestis are generally difficult to identify one from the other, especially in the P. argenteopicta species-group. However, they are easily distinguishable from each other in the pattern of forewings. Although this new species seemed to be P. argenteopicta or P. dabashana when it was first examined. The new species is very similar to P. argenteopicta in appearance, but differs from the latter as follows: valva broader, sacculus more widely expanded, cucullus more sharply pointed, carinal hook of aedeagus slightly curved, and ostium bursae of female genitalia with larger ventro-lateral plates on both sides. On the other hand, compared with P. dabashana, the new species has blacker forewings and obscure white spots on veins, broader valva, especially on the terminal of valva broader than P. dabashana. We also extracted DNA bar codes (CO1) of P. naxii sp. n. and P. argenteopicta, within the two species Kimura two parameter (K2P) distances and P-distance were 5.0% and 4.80% respectively. Lacking fresh specimen of P. dabashana, it is difficult to provide relatively well-trusted DNA evidence, so in this paper we tentatively describe these darker specimens as new species based on morphological characteristics in above text.

VII. 2015, alt. 2,680 m, Weixi, Yunnan, leg. Min Wang, slide No. SCAU-Thy018. Distribution. China (Sichuan, Yunnan, Hunan, Hubei). Remarks. Jiang et al. (2015) reported a new species, S. bruna from Hubei and Hunan province, China (Figs 87, 91, 92), while Zhuang et al. (2014) described a new species T. sichuanensis from Sichuan province, China. After careful comparison of these two taxa, we reached the conclusion that S. bruna is a synonym of T. sichuanensis Zhuang, Owada & Wang, 2014 (Figs 13, 55, 85, 86, 88, 89, 90, 93), based on the following reasons: 1) Although the two taxa were collected from different locations, these locations are very close in proximity to each other (Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces), and they have very similar appearance and genitalia, 2) The uncus of S. bruna illustrated by Jiang et al. (2015) had most likely been lost in dissecting and mounting, so Jiang et al. assigned this species not to Toxoides Hampson, [1893] but Stenopsestis Yoshimoto, 1984. In addition, this species is newly recorded for Yunnan, China., Published as part of Zhuang, Hailing, Yago, Masaya, Owada, Mamoru & Wang, Min, 2017, Taxonomic review of the moth family Thyatiridae (Lepidoptera) from Yunnan province, China, pp. 451-477 in Zootaxa 4306 (4) on page 456, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4306.4.1, http://zenodo.org/record/845075, {"references":["Jiang, N., Yang, C., Xue, D. & Hang, H. Parapsestis tachengensis sp. n. (Figs 32, 41, 74, 83) Type material. Holotype: male, 13. VII. 2013, alt. 2,430 m, Weixi, Yunnan, China, leg. Hailing Zhuang, slide No. SCAU-Thy045. Paratype: 1 female, 13. VII. 2015, alt. 2,680 m, Weixi, Yunnan, China, leg. Tiantian Yu, slide No. SCAU-Thy046, DNA material No. B 018, genBank accession numbers: KY974322. Diagnosis. Forewing ground color grey without distinct pattern. Male genitalia small, tegumen with a sclerotized digitation. Valva narrower, sacculus sclerotized and involute. Female genitalia papillae anales broader, apophyses posteriores and apophyses anteriores broader. Description. Male and female adults: small-sized, wingspan 38 mm, length of forewing 17.5 mm. Head small, eyes naked. Antenna lamellate, brown. Forewing relatively broad without distinct apex. Usually grey black ground color with grey white patterns. Forewings without obvious partition. Hindwings pale-white. Male genitalia: Uncus short, socii long with an inflated terminal hook. The base of uncus-socii flat, socil away from uncus. Tegumen narrower with a sclerotized digitation. Fultura superior belt-shaped, light sclerotized. Valva relatively narrow, cucullus round, smooth, saccular part sclerotized and with spinulate extensions, involute. Aedeagus short, simple, carina with a hook, cornuti field with fine cornuti. Female genitalia: Papillae anales sclerotized, broad, base of apophyses posteriors and apophyses anteriores broad. Eighth abdominal segment sclerotized sample. Ostial part, ductus bursae and corpus bursae membranous, signum single, long bar-shaped. Distribution. China (Yunnan). Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from the name of Tacheng which is the closest town to the type locality. Remarks. Adults of the new species look very inconspicuous. Therefore, when we collected a single specimen, we thought it was a worn-out specimen of a certain species of genus Parapsestis Warren, 1912. However, after careful examination of the male genitalia of the worn-out specimen, we found that it is a new species distinct from known species of genus Parapsestis Warren, 1912. This new species is distinguished from a very similar species P. argenteopicta in having a digitation on the tegumen, narrower valva and broader apophyses anteriores and posteriores, in addition, their Kimura two parameter (K2P) distances and P-distance were 2.6% and 2.5% respectively, these evidences support the contention that P. tachengensis sp. n. is a distinct species.

Large-scale climatic cycling during the Pleistocene resulted in repeated split and fusion of species ranges in high northern latitudes. Disjunctions of ranges of some Eurasian species associated with nemoral communities used to be dated to ‘glacial time’, with existence of their contiguous ranges reconstructed not later than 1 mya, while a recent hypothesis associates them with the Boreal time of the Holocene and reconstructs the contiguous ranges ca 5 thousand years ago. These estimates differing by almost 3 orders of magnitude appealed for their testing via molecular methods. We made such a test for Eversmannia exornata (Lepidoptera: Uraniidae: Epipleminae), the only uraniid moth inhabiting Siberia, the range of which is split into three pieces: East European, West Siberian and Far Eastern. Two genes were sequenced in specimens from one population from each geographical isolate: a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxydase I (COI), frequently used for molecular phylogeny and barcoding, and a nuclear gene encoding histone H1. The COI gene fragment appeared to have two alleles differing by one synonymous substitution; both alleles co-occurring in the European population. The histone H1 gene had two dimorphic synonymous sites, with both variants of one site found in all three isolates. Absence of accumulated difference in both genes and polymorphism for the same synonymous substitution in the H1 gene in all three parts of the range suggests a very recent disjunction which cannot be resolved by coding gene sequences. This well corresponds to the Holocene disjunction hypothesis and rules out the Pliocene/early Pleistocene disjunction hypothesis. The published rate of the COI gene evolution was verified using the Beringian disjunction in the genus Oreta (Lepidoptera: Drepaniidae) as comparing two northernmost Asian and one American species which diverged not later than the Pliocene. The rate of substitution accumulation in the histone H1 gene was estimated as 0.48 of that of the COI gene, that is ca 3.6 × 10−9 substitutions per site per year. Four indels were found in the histone H1 gene in the three Oreta species studied, differing from each other not less than with two indels.

Incluimos también nuevas citas de Drepanidae para otras localidades del resto del territorio gallego, entre las que aportamos las primeras de Falcaria lacertinaria (Linnaeus, 1758) para las provincias de Ourense y Pontevedra., An updated and annotated list of the Drepanidae (Lepidoptera) know to occur in O Courel (Lugo, Galicia, Spain, NW Iberian Peninsula) is made, compiling the existing bibliographic records (only for two species) and reaching up to 13 species after adding new ones as a result of field work undertaken by the author. Amongst the new data the first records of Drepana curvatula (Borkhausen, 1790), Watsonalla binaria (Hufnagel, 1767) and Cimatophorina diluta ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) for the province of Lugo are reported. New records of Drepanidae from other Galician localities with the first ones of Falcaria lacertinaria (Linnaeus, 1758) for the provinces of Ourense and Pontevedra are also included.
