57. Impact ionisation mass spectrometry of polypyrrole-coated pyrrhotite microparticles

Abstract

Cation and anion impact ionization mass spectra of polypyrrole-coated pyrrhotite cosmic dust analogue particles are analysed over a range of cosmically relevant impact speeds. Spectra with mass resolutions of 150-300 were generated by hypervelocity impacts of charged particles, accelerated to up to 37 km s-1 in a Van de Graaff electrostatic accelerator, onto a silver target plate in the Large Area Mass Analyzer (LAMA) spectrometer. Ions clearly indicative of the polypyrrole overlayer are identified at masses of 93, 105, 117, 128 and 141 u. Organic species, predominantly derived from the thin (20 nm) polypyrrole layer on the surface of the particles, dominate the anion spectra even at high (>20kms-1) impact velocities and contribute significantly to the cation spectra at velocities lower than this. Atomic species from the pyrrhotite core (Fe and S) are visible in all spectra at impact velocities above 6 km s-1 for 56Fe+, 9 km s-1 for 32S+ and 16 km s-1 for 32S- ions. Species from the pyrrhotite core are also frequently visible in cation spectra at impact speeds at which surface ionisation is believed to dominate (<10kms-1), although the large number of organic peaks complicates the identification of characteristic molecular species. A thin oxidised surface layer on the pyrrhotite particles is indicated by weak spectral features assigned to iron oxides and iron oxy-hydroxides, although the definitive identification of sulfates and hydrated sulfates from the oxidation process was not possible. Silver was confirmed as an excellent choice for the target plate of an impact ionization mass spectrometer, as it provided a unique isotope signature for many target-projectile cluster peaks at masses above 107-109 u. The affinity of Ag towards a dominant organic fragment ion (CN-) derived from fragmentation of the polypyrrole component led to molecular cluster formation. This resulted in an enhanced sensitivity to a particular particle component, which may be of great use

Abstract

We estimated rates of breeding philopatry and complementary dispersal within the Queen Maud Gulf metapopulation of Ross’s Geese (Chen rossii) using multistate modeling of neckband observations at five breeding colonies, 1999–2003. Probability of philopatry was female–biased, but varied among colonies. Probabilies of annual movement among breeding colonies ranged 0.02 to 0.14 for females and 0.12 to 0.38 for males and was substantially higher than expected. These estimates (1) underscore the potential for dispersal to alter breeding distribution, (2) demonstrates that the influence of immigration on colony–specific rates of population growth is nontrivial, and (3) provides behavioral evidence for extensive gene flow among subpopulations. Sex differences in apparent survival estimated from multistate models likely resulted from a combination of higher rates of neckband loss by males compared to females, and higher rates of permanent emigration by males from our study area., Estimamos las tasas de filopatría de reproducción y la dispersión complementaria del ansar de Ross (Chen rossii) en la metapoblación del golfo de la Reina Maud utilizando la modelación multiestado a partir de las observaciones de animales marcados en el cuello en cinco colonias de reproducción, 1999–2003. La probabilidad de filopatría presentaba un sesgo a favor de las hembras, pero variaba de una colonia a otra. Las probabilidades de movimiento anual entre las colonias de reproducción oscilaban entre el 0,02 y el 0,14 para las hembras, y entre el 0,12 y el 0,38 para los machos, siendo considerablemente superiores a lo previsto. 62. Reformational Ressourcement?: T.F. Torrance's Calvin's Doctrine of Man in Light of the Barth-Brunner Debate.

Abstract

Scholars have recognized T.F. Torrance as a ressourcement thinker in his later work while overlooking his earlier historical studies. In this article, I argue that in Calvin's Doctrine of Man (1949) Torrance presents a rereading of Calvin in order to advance contemporary theological understanding and facilitate the reception of Karl Barth in postwar Scotland. In that work, Torrance attempts to resolve the debate between Brunner and Barth over natural theology by reinterpreting Calvin's anthropology. Torrance accounts for Brunner's claims regarding Calvin's complex use and understanding of the imago dei while ultimately affirming Barth's rejection of natural theology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ceramic pot filters (CPFs) are an effective means of household water treatment, but the characterization of CPF lifetimes is ongoing. This paper describes a lifetime field study in Guatemala which was made possible by a collaboration between researchers, CPF-using households, and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Disinfection data were collected periodically for two years using field coliform enumeration kits as were flow rate data with the assistance of NGO staff. Consumer acceptance was characterized by surveying householders in the four subject villages at the beginning and end of the study. Flow rate data showed that average CPF flow rates decreased below the recommended minimum of 1 L h-1 after 10 months of use; however, the survey results indicated that the consumers were tolerant of the lower flow rates, and it is reasonable to assume that the daily volume of treated water can be readily increased by refilling the CPFs more frequently. Of greater concern was the finding that disinfection efficacy decreased below the recommended bacterial reduction after 14 months of use because it would not be obvious to users that effectiveness had declined. Finally, the follow-up visits by the researchers and the NGO staff appeared to increase consumer acceptance of the CPFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The method of in situ time-resolved high-energy X-ray diffraction, using the intrinsically highly collimated X-ray beam generated by the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, is demonstrated. A specially designed cell, which allows the addition of liquid components, has been used to study the reaction mechanisms of a foamed bioactive calcia-silica sol-gel glass immersed in simulated body fluid. Analysis of the X-ray diffraction data from this experiment provides atomic distances, via the pair correlation functions, at different stages of the dissolution of the glass and of the associated calcium phosphate, and ultimately hydroxyapatite, i.e. bone mineral, formation. Hence, changes in the atomic scale structure can be analysed as a function of reaction time, giving an insight into the evolution of the structure of both the glass matrix and the hydroxyapatite surface growth.
