Abstract

International audience; Micron sized dust grains are present throughout the heliosphere and in the nearby galaxy as both interplanetary dust (IPD) and interstellar dust (ISD) particles. Dust sources include grinding main belt asteroids, sputtered KBOs in the EKB, and sublimating comets throughout, while sinks include solar radiation pressure and evaporation. The full shape and structure of the solar system's dust disks are poorly understood because we live inside of them; we especially do not understand the outer disks regions since near-Sun cometary contributions dominate near-Earth space and only 1 spacecraft, New Horizons, has ever flown a dust counter through the EKB. The ability to map the radial gradient of interplanetary dust grain composition (s) provides strong constraints on the masses, compositions, and origins of their parent relic bodies.

Abstract

Interstellar dust provides the building blocks of planets and the initial grain size distribution in the parent molecular cloud is key to understanding how planets form. Under typical diffuse ISM conditions, dust grains do not grow beyond ~0.5 micron. However, within dense molecular clouds, when shielded from the harsh interstellar radiation field, ice mantles form, allowing grain growth through coagulation. Theoretical models predict that grain growth deforms the silicate band profiles at 9.7 and 18 micron and flattens the extinction curve between 5 and 26 micron. We propose to observe, with MIRI spectroscopy, 9 independent lines of sight through 3 very dense cores, from 5 to 40 mag of Av. Our proposed measurements, made possible by the exquisite JWST sensitivity, will be a paradigm shift in the field: the simultaneous observations of the 9.7 and 18 micron silicate absorption features at such high Av, of the 5-26 micron extinction curve, and of several ice features, coupled with state-of-the-art modelling, will allow us to resolve for the first time intrinsic degeneracies in grain size, shape and porosity. This will make it possible to set unprecedented constraints on astrochemical models with wide applications to planet and star formation. We will also deliver to the community a mini atlas of spectroscopic MIR extinction curves for the observed regions, which will be the very first publicly available for high Av sightlines. This program complements the current JWST ERS portfolio, by helping to bridge a critical gap between star and planet formation, making it an ideal addition to the Cycle 1 observations which promise to deliver revolutionary science.

Abstract

Planetary Science White Paper; Astrophysical measurements at distances outside of 50 AU from the Sun enable transformative science that are impossible to obtain from inner system platforms, such as a: Complete census of all interplanetary dust and ice permeating the solar system, and direct comparison of its distribution to exo-circumstellar disks; Stable time-domain astronomy of exoplanet transit lightcurves, exoplanet microlensing events, supernova explosions, and black hole mergers; and Measurement of all the light created by planets, stars, and galaxies over the entire history of the Universe. A single powerful instrument could be used to obtain these measurements, and to perform New Horizons-style flybys of dwarf planets & KBOs, potentially doubling the number of these kinds of worlds that have been visited and studied in great detail [1]. Though likely transformative, opportunities to fly instrumentation capable of these measurements are rare, and a mission to the distant solar system that includes instrumentation expressly designed to perform astrophysical science has never been flown. The proposed Interstellar Probe Mission (ISP; [2-5]) provides just such an opportunity for launch in 2030. In this White Paper, we describe an instrument concept to ride along on a Heliospheric Division Interstellar Probe Mission that would enable groundbreaking science via cross-divisional collaboration and cooperation within NASA (c.f. [6]).

80. Spectroscopic constraints on the properties of dust in active galactic nuclei

Abstract

The optical properties of graphite, silicate, and SiC grains over the wavelength range 1000 microns - 1 A are calculated for grains in the 0.005-10-micron size range. Both graphite + silicate (MRN) and graphite + SiC grain mixtures are considered, with various grain size distributions. A detailed radiative transfer calculation is performed to obtain constraints on the emission properties of dust in AGN in either 'optically thin' or optically thick configurations. Warm graphite + silicate or graphite + SiC dust (T is greater than 200 K) with the MRN size distribution and a column density less than about 10 exp 23/sq cm produces a strong silicate or SiC emission feature. Such dust cannot be responsible for the observed IR emission from AGN. MRN dust with a high optical depth at 10 microns produces an emission feature with an amplitude of about 57 percent, in excess of the typical observational limit for most objects. Reddening of the broad emission lines and continuum is unlikely to be common.

Abstract

One of the main objectives of the First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) Regional Experiment (FIRE) is to provide a better understanding of the physics of upper level clouds. The focus is on just one specific aspect of cirrus physics, namely on characterizing the radiative properties of single, nonspherical ice particles. The basis for further more extensive studies of the radiative transfer through upper level clouds is provided. Radiation provides a potential mechanism for strong feedback between the divergence of in-cloud radiative flux and the cloud microphysics and ultimately on the dynamics of the cloud. Some aspects of ice cloud microphysics that are relevant to the radiation calculations are described. Next, the Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) is introduced and some new results of scattering by irregular crystals are presented. The Anomalous Diffraction Theory (ADT) was adopted to investigate the scattering properties of even larger crystals. In this way the scattering properties of nonspherical particles were determined over a range of particle sizes.

Abstract

The [C ii] 158 μm fine-structure line is the brightest emission line observed in local star-forming galaxies. As a major coolant of the gas-phase interstellar medium, [C ii] balances the heating, including that due to far-ultraviolet photons, which heat the gas via the photoelectric effect. However, the origin of [C ii] emission remains unclear because C+ can be found in multiple phases of the interstellar medium. Here we measure the fractions of [C ii] emission originating in the ionized and neutral gas phases of a sample of nearby galaxies. We use the [N ii] 205 μm fine-structure line to trace the ionized medium, thereby eliminating the strong density dependence that exists in the ratio of [C ii]/[N ii] 122 μm. Using the FIR [C ii] and [N ii] emission detected by the KINGFISH (Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: a Far- Infrared Survey with Herschel) and Beyond the Peak Herschel programs, we show that 60%-80% of [C ii] emission originates from neutral gas. We find that the fraction of [C ii] originating in the neutral medium has a weak dependence on dust temperature and the surface density of star formation, and has a stronger dependence on the gas-phase metallicity. In metal-rich environments, the relatively cooler ionized gas makes substantially larger contributions to total [C ii] emission than at low abundance, contrary to prior expectations. Abstract

We present [C ii] 158 μm measurements from over 15,000 resolved regions within 54 nearby galaxies of the Kingfish program to investigate the so-called [C ii] "line-cooling deficit" long known to occur in galaxies with different luminosities. The [C ii]/TIR ratio ranges from above 1% to below 0.1% in the sample, with a mean value of 0.48 ± 0.21%. We find that the surface density of 24 μm emission dominates this trend, with [C ii]/TIR dropping as vIv (24 μm)increases. Deviations from this overall decline are correlated with changes in the gas-phase metal abundance, with higher metallicity associated with deeper deficits at a fixed surface brightness. We supplement the local sample with resolved [C ii] measurements from nearby luminous infrared galaxies and high-redshift sources from z = 1.8-6.4, and find that star formation rate density drives a continuous trend of deepening [C ii] deficit across six orders of magnitude in ΣSFR. The tightness of this correlation suggests that an approximate can be estimated directly from global measurements of [C ii]/TIR, and a relation is provided to do so. Several low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosts in the sample show additional and significant central suppression of [C ii]/TIR, but these deficit enhancements occur not in those AGNs with the highest X-ray luminosities, but instead those with the highest central starlight intensities. Abstract

The brightest observed emission line in many star-forming galaxies is the 158 μm line, making it detectable up to z ∼ 7. In order to better understand and quantify the emission as a tracer of star formation, the theoretical ratio between the 205 μm emission and the 158 μm emission has been employed to empirically determine the fraction of emission that originates from the ionized and neutral phases of the interstellar medium (ISM). Sub-kiloparsec measurements of the 158 μm and 205 μm lines in nearby galaxies have recently become available as part of the Key Insights in Nearby Galaxies: a Far Infrared Survey with Herschel (KINGFISH) and Beyond the Peak programs. With the information from these two far-infrared lines along with the multi-wavelength suite of KINGFISH data, a calibration of the emission line as a star formation rate (SFR) indicator and a better understanding of the deficit are pursued. emission is also compared to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in these regions to compare photoelectric heating from PAH molecules to cooling by in the neutral and ionized phases of the ISM. We find that the emission originating in the neutral phase of the ISM does not exhibit a deficit with respect to the infrared luminosity and is therefore preferred over the emission originating in the ionized phase of the ISM as an SFR indicator for the normal star-forming galaxies included in this sample. Abstract

The [NII] 122 and 205 um transitions are powerful tracers of the ionized gas in the ISM: (1) the [NII] 122/205 line ratio can be used to measure the electron density of the low-excitation, ionized gas, and (2) the intensity of these lines is directly related to the flux of ionizing photons, probing the most recent star formation activity. The study of these applications in nearby galaxies is specially relevant now that ALMA can observe both [NII] transitions at z>2. In this talk I will present Herschel observations of these pair of [NII] far-infrared lines in 21 nearby galaxies selected from the KINGFISH and Beyond the Peak samples. I will discuss the reliability of the [NII] lines as star formation tracers, and how the electron density of the ionized gas is related to other relevant ISM properties (e.g., radiation field strength, star formation activity, dust temperature, etc)., Astrodynamics & Space Missions

Abstract

We present Spitzer 3.6–160 μm images, Spitzer mid-infrared spectra, and JCMT SCUBA 850 μm images of the Sombrero Galaxy (NGC 4594), an Sa galaxy with a 10^9 M⊙ ; low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN). The brightest infrared sources in the galaxy are the nucleus and the dust ring. The spectral energy distribution of the AGN demonstrates that, while the environment around the AGN is a prominent source of mid-infrared emission, it is a relatively weak source of far-infrared emission, as had been inferred for AGNs in previous research. The weak nuclear 160 μm emission and the negligible polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission from the nucleus also implies that the nucleus is a site of only weak star formation activity and the nucleus contains relatively little cool interstellar gas needed to fuel such activity. We propose that this galaxy may be representative of a subset of low-ionization nuclear emission region galaxies that are in a quiescent AGN phase because of the lack of gas needed to fuel circumnuclear star formation and Seyfert-like AGN activity. Surprisingly, the AGN is the predominant source of 850 μm emission. We examine the possible emission mechanisms that could give rise to the 850 μm emission and find that neither thermal dust emission, CO line emission, bremsstrahlung emission, nor the synchrotron emission observed at radio wavelengths can adequately explain the measured 850 μm flux density by themselves. The remaining possibilities for the source of the 850 μm emission include a combination of known emission mechanisms, synchrotron emission that is self-absorbed at wavelengths longer than 850 μm, or unidentified spectral lines in the 850 μm band.
