Abstract

Using the calculated electron energy band structure of Tl2Ba2CuO6, we compute the dependence of the c axis magnetoresistance on the orientation of the magnetic field for different magnitudes of the magnetic field. We explain the known experimental results for the in-plane rotation of the magnetic field and predict the shape of the magnetoresistance oscillations for the out-of-plane rotations of the magnetic field. We show how the latter oscillations can be utilized to reconstruct the shape of the Fermi surface and to study the coherence of inter-plane electron tunneling., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, RevTeX. Abstract

SUMMARY: During fruit ripening, polygalacturonases (PGs) are key contributors to the softening process in many species. Apple is a crisp fruit that normally exhibits only minor changes to cell walls and limited fruit softening. Here, we explore the effects of PG overexpression during fruit development using transgenic apple lines overexpressing the ripening‐related endo‐POLYGALACTURONASE1 gene. MdPG1‐overexpressing (PGox) fruit displayed early maturation/ripening with black seeds, conversion of starch to sugars and ethylene production occurring by 80 days after pollination (DAP). PGox fruit exhibited a striking, white‐skinned phenotype that was evident from 60 DAP and most likely resulted from increased air spaces and separation of cells in the hypodermis due to degradation of the middle lamellae. Irregularities in the integrity of the epidermis and cuticle were also observed. By 120 DAP, PGox fruit cracked and showed lenticel‐associated russeting. Increased cuticular permeability was associated with microcracks in the cuticle around lenticels and was correlated with reduced cortical firmness at all time points and extensive post‐harvest water loss from the fruit, resulting in premature shrivelling. Transcriptomic analysis suggested that early maturation was associated with upregulation of genes involved in stress responses, and overexpression of MdPG1 also altered the expression of genes involved in cell wall metabolism (e.g. β‐galactosidase, MD15G1221000) and ethylene biosynthesis (e.g. ACC synthase, MD14G1111500). The results show that upregulation of PG not only has dramatic effects on the structure of the fruit outer cell layers, indirectly affecting water status and turgor, but also has unexpected consequences for fruit development. Mononuclear heteroleptic complexes [Fe(tpma)(bimz)](ClO4)2 (1a), [Fe(tpma)(bimz)](BF4)2 (1b), [Fe(bpte)(bimz)](ClO4)2 (2a), and [Fe(bpte)(bimz)](BF4)2 (2b) (tpma = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, bpte = S,S′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-thioethane, bimz = 2,2′-biimidazoline) were prepared by reacting the corresponding Fe(II) salts with stoichiometric amounts of the ligands. All complexes exhibit temperature-induced spin crossover (SCO), but the SCO temperature is substantially lower for complexes 1a and 1b as compared to 2a and 2b, indicating the stronger ligand field afforded by the N2S2-coordinating bpte ligand relative to the N4-coordinating tpma. Our findings suggest that ligands with mixed N/S coordination can be employed to discover new SCO complexes and to tune the transition temperature of known SCO compounds by substituting for purely N-coordinating ligands.

Abstract

Background The relative impact of right ventricular (RV) electromechanical dyssynchrony versus pulmonary regurgitation (PR) on exercise capacity and RV function after tetralogy of Fallot repair is unknown. We aimed to delineate the relative effects of these factors on RV function and exercise capacity. Methods and Results We retrospectively analyzed 81 children with tetralogy of Fallot repair using multivariable regression. Predictor parameters were electrocardiographic QRS duration reflecting electromechanical dyssynchrony and PR severity by cardiac magnetic resonance. The outcome parameters were exercise capacity (percentage predicted peak oxygen consumption) and cardiac magnetic resonance ejection fraction (RV ejection fraction). To understand the relative effects of RV dyssynchrony versus PR on exercise capacity and RV function, virtual patient simulations were performed using a closed‐loop cardiovascular system model (CircAdapt), covering a wide spectrum of disease severity. Eighty‐one patients with tetralogy of Fallot repair (median [interquartile range {IQR}] age, 14.48 [11.55–15.91] years) were analyzed. All had prolonged QRS duration (median [IQR], 144 [123–152] ms), at least moderate PR (median [IQR], 40% [29%–48%]), reduced exercise capacity (median [IQR], 79% [68%–92%] predicted peak oxygen consumption), and reduced RV ejection fraction (median [IQR], 48% [44%–52%]). Longer QRS duration, more than PR, was associated with lower oxygen consumption and lower RV ejection fraction. In a multivariable regression analysis, oxygen consumption decreased with both increasing QRS duration and PR severity. CircAdapt modeling showed that RV dyssynchrony exerts a stronger limiting effect on exercise capacity and on RV ejection fraction than does PR, regardless of contractile function. Conclusions In both patient data and computer simulations, RV dyssynchrony, more than PR, appears to be associated with reduced exercise capacity and RV systolic dysfunction in patients after TOF repair.

Abstract

Abstract Congenital heart diseases causing significant hemodynamic and functional consequences require surgical repair. Understanding of the precise surgical anatomy is often challenging and can be inadequate or wrong. Modern high resolution imaging techniques and 3D printing technology allow 3D printing of the replicas of the patient’s heart for precise understanding of the complex anatomy, hands-on simulation of surgical and interventional procedures, and morphology teaching of the medical professionals and patients. CT or MR images obtained with ECG-gating and breath-holding or respiration navigation are best suited for 3D printing. 3D echocardiograms are not ideal but can be used for printing limited areas of interest such as cardiac valves and ventricular septum. Although the print materials still require optimization for representation of cardiovascular tissues and valves, the surgeons find the models suitable for practicing closure of the septal defects, application of the baffles within the ventricles, reconstructing the aortic arch, and arterial switch procedure. Hands-on surgical training (HOST) on models may soon become a mandatory component of congenital heart disease surgery program. 3D printing will expand its utilization with further improvement of the use of echocardiographic data and image fusion algorithm across multiple imaging modalities and development of new printing materials. Bioprinting of implants such as stents, patches and artificial valves and tissue engineering of a part of or whole heart using the patient’s own cells will open the door to a new era of personalized medicine.

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the potential of targeted photoacoustic imaging as a noninvasive method for detection of follicular thyroid carcinoma.Experimental Design: We determined the presence and activity of two members of matrix metalloproteinase family (MMP), MMP-2 and MMP-9, suggested as biomarkers for malignant thyroid lesions, in FTC133 thyroid tumors subcutaneously implanted in nude mice. The imaging agent used to visualize tumors was MMP-activatable photoacoustic probe, Alexa750-CXeeeeXPLGLAGrrrrrXK-BHQ3. Cleavage of the MMP-activatable agent was imaged after intratumoral and intravenous injections in living mice optically, observing the increase in Alexa750 fluorescence, and photoacoustically, using a dual-wavelength imaging method.Results: Active forms of both MMP-2 and MMP-9 enzymes were found in FTC133 tumor homogenates, with MMP-9 detected in greater amounts. The molecular imaging agent was determined to be activated by both enzymes in vitro, with MMP-9 being more efficient in this regard. Both optical and photoacoustic imaging showed significantly higher signal in tumors of mice injected with the active agent than in tumors injected with the control, nonactivatable, agent.Conclusions: With the combination of high spatial resolution and signal specificity, targeted photoacoustic imaging holds great promise as a noninvasive method for early diagnosis of follicular thyroid carcinomas. Abstract

International audience; Background - Infective endocarditis (IE) is a common and serious complication in patients receiving chronic hemodialysis (HD). Objectives - This study sought to investigate whether there are significant differences in complications, cardiac surgery, relapses, and mortality between IE cases in HD and non-HD patients. Methods - Prospective cohort study (International Collaboration on Endocarditis databases, encompassing 7,715 IE episodes from 2000 to 2006 and from 2008 to 2012). Descriptive analysis of baseline characteristics, epidemiological and etiological features, complications and outcomes, and their comparison between HD and non-HD patients was performed. Risk factors for major embolic events, cardiac surgery, relapses, and in-hospital and 6-month mortality were investigated in HD-patients using multivariable logistic regression. Results - A total of 6,691 patients were included and 553 (8.3%) received HD. North America had a higher HD-IE proportion than the other regions. The predominant microorganism was Staphylococcus aureus (47.8%), followed by enterococci (15.4%).
