Abstract

(Fe(II)(NCCH₃)(NTB))(OTf)₂ (NTB = tris(2- benzimidazoylmethyl)amine, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) was reacted with difluoro(phenyl)-λ³-iodane (PhIF₂) in the presence of a variety of saturated hydrocarbons, resulting in the oxidative fluorination of the hydrocarbons in moderate-to-good yields. Kinetic and product analysis point towards a hydrogen atom transfer oxidation prior to fluorine radical rebound to form the fluorinated product. The combined evidence supports the formation of a formally Fe(IV)(F)₂ oxidant that performs hydrogen atom transfer followed by the formation of a dimeric μ-F−(Fe(III))₂ product that is a plausible fluorine atom transfer rebound reagent. This approach mimics the heme paradigm for hydrocarbon hydroxylation, opening up avenues for oxidative hydrocarbon halogenation.

Abstract

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a chronic, infectious and zoonotic disease of domestic and wild animals caused mainly by Mycobacterium bovis. This study investigated farm management factors associated with recurrent bTB herd breakdowns (n = 2935) disclosed in the period 23 May 2016 to 21 May 2018 and is a follow-up to our 2020 paper which looked at long duration bTB herd breakdowns. A case control study design was used to construct an explanatory set of farm-level management factors associated with recurrent bTB herd breakdowns. In Northern Ireland, a Department of Agriculture Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) Veterinarian investigates bTB herd breakdowns using standardised guidelines to allocate a disease source. In this study, source was strongly linked to carryover of infection, suggesting that the diagnostic tests had failed to clear herd infection during the breakdown period. Other results from this study associated with recurrent bTB herd breakdowns were herd size and type (dairy herds 43% of cases), with both these variables intrinsically linked. Other associated risk factors were time of application of slurry, badger access to silage clamps, badger setts in the locality, cattle grazing silage fields immediately post-harvest, number of parcels of land the farmer associated with bTB, number of land parcels used for grazing and region of the country.

65. Longitudinal Predictors of Psychiatric Disorders in Very Low Birth Weight Adults

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine risk and protective factors for adult psychiatric disorders in very low birth weight (VLBW, birth weight less than 1,501 g) survivors. 79 of 154 (51%) VLBW subjects recruited at birth were assessed in early adulthood (24-27 years). Participants were screened for a psychiatric disorder; those elevated were invited to attend a structured clinical interview to determine a clinical diagnosis. Longitudinal variables measured from birth and at ages 2, 5, 14 and 18 years were included in analyses. Perinatal, developmental and social environmental risk factors failed to predict psychiatric disorder in adulthood in this cohort of VLBW survivors. Instead, low self-esteem at age 18 (odds ratio [OR] = 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1, 1.11, p = 0.05) and the adult social environment (high rates of negative life event stress at the time of assessment: OR = 1.39, CI = 1.10, 1.76, p = 0.02), contributed significantly to adult psychiatric outcomes.

71. Developmental Coordination Disorder at 8 Years of Age in a Regional Cohort of Extremely-Low-Birthweight or Very Preterm Infants

Abstract

The aims of this study were to determine the motor outcome of extremely-low-birthweight (ELBW; less than 1000g) or very preterm (less than 28wks) children compared with normal birthweight (NBW) children, to establish the perinatal associations of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and its cognitive and behavioural consequences. Participants were consecutive surviving ELBW or very preterm children and randomly selected NBW(greater than 2499g) children born in the state of Victoria, Australia, in 1991 or 1992. Main outcomes were: (1) results of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC) at 8 years of age; (2) cognitive function; (3) academic progress; and (4) behaviour. Of 298 consecutive ELBW/very preterm survivors, 255 (85.6%; 117 males, 138 females) had the MABC at a mean age of 8 years 8 months. More ELBW/very preterm children (9.5%) had DCD than the NBW group (2%, p = 0.001). Only male sex increased the likelihood of DCD in ELBW/very preterm children (p = 0.017). ELBW/very preterm children with DCD had worse cognitive function and academic test scores (up to 1SD below those without DCD); they also had more adaptive behaviour and externalizing problems, but not internalizing problems. DCD is more common in ELBW/very preterm children, has few perinatal correlates, and is associated with poor cognitive and academic performance as well as increased behaviour problems. Abstract

We present evidence for pressure-broadened sodium absorption and a steep scattering slope, using low-resolution optical transmission spectra of the hot Jupiter WASP-94Ab. Broad sodium is an indicator of a cloud-free atmosphere, suggesting the highly-inflated WASP-94Ab is an excellent target for molecular abundance determination using infrared spectroscopy. Our low-resolution study of the atmosphere of this exoplanet, a highly-inflated hot Jupiter with a radius of 1.7 Jupter radii and a mass of 0.5 Jupiter masses and an estimated equilibrium temperature of 1500 K in the wavelength range of 3800 - 7140 Å has revealed a clear atmosphere with a 4.9σ sodium absorption and a scattering slope through the LRG-BEASTS survey. It was measured with the EFOSC2 spectrograph on the ESO New Technology Telescope - the first time this instrument has been used for transmission spectroscopy. The ongoing work on high resolution observations from HARPS (taken as part of the HEARTS survey) is probing the Doppler shifts of the sodium line doublet., {"references":["Neveu-VanMalle, M. et al. Abstract

High-resolution spectroscopy is used to detect and characterise the atmospheres of transiting planets, giving us information about their chemical composition, temperature profiles, and the presence of clouds and winds, mainly in hot, giant planets. State-of-the-art instrumentation is pushing the precision of our measurements towards the detection of smaller exoplanets and their atmospheres (Neptune and Earth-sized planets). Of special interest are the few planets located in or close to the "Neptune desert", a lack of Neptune-size planets in close orbits around their host stars. The study of such planets can provide insight to their formation and evolution, and the existence of the desert. In this work, we study the presence of water vapour in the bloated super-Neptune WASP-166 b. This planet orbits an F9-type star in a close orbit of 5.4 days (0.06 AU) and is located in the Neptune desert. The presence of sodium in its atmosphere has recently been confirmed by our team using the same observations as here. Despite its close-in orbit, it preserved its atmosphere, making it a benchmark target for exoplanet atmosphere studies in the desert. We analyse two full transits observed in the visible with the high-resolution spectrograph ESPRESSO. We perform a principal component analysis on the observed spectra to remove telluric features from the Earth atmosphere and the stellar features, and then use the cross-correlation technique to try to isolate the planetary signal. To compute the cross-correlation, we employ a range of water models with different temperatures and cloud deck levels, as well as different line lists, but no model results in a significant detection. We use a Bayesian retrieval tool to simultaneously estimate limits on the abundance of water and the altitude of a cloud layer. This work provides further insight on the Neptune desert planet WASP-166 b, which in addition is scheduled to be observed with JWST.

Abstract

Aim: To investigate the strength of the independent associations of mathematics performance in children born very preterm (<32wks’ gestation or <1500g birthweight) with attending postsecondary education and their current employment status in young adulthood. Method: We harmonized data from six very preterm birth cohorts from five different countries and carried out one-stage individual participant data meta-analyses (n=954, 52% female) using mixed effects logistic regression models. Mathematics scores at 8 to 11 years of age were z-standardized using contemporary cohort-specific controls. Outcomes included any postsecondary education, and employment/education status in young adulthood. All modelswere adjusted for year of birth, gestational age, sex, maternal education, and IQ in childhood. Results: Higher mathematics performance in childhood was independently associated with having attended any postsecondary education (odds ratio [OR] per SD increase in mathematics z-score: 1.36 [95% confidence interval {CI}: 1.03, 1.79]) but not with current employment/education status (OR 1.14 per SD increase [95% CI: 0.87, 1.48]). Interpretation: Among populations born very preterm, childhood mathematics performance is important for adult educational attainment, but not for employment status.

Abstract

Background: This study examined differences in ADHD symptoms and diagnosis between preterm and term-born adults (≥18 years), and tested if ADHD is related to gestational age, birth weight, multiple births, or neonatal complications in preterm borns. Methods: (1) A systematic review compared ADHD symptom self-reports and diagnosis between preterm and term-born adults published in PubMed, Web of Science, and PROQUEST until April 2021; (2) a one-stage Individual Participant Data(IPD) meta-analysis (n= 1385 preterm, n = 1633 term; born 1978–1995) examined differences in self-reported ADHD symptoms[age 18–36 years]; and (3) a population-based register-linkage study of all live births in Finland (01/01/1987–31/12/1998; n = 37538 preterm, n = 691,616 term) examined ADHD diagnosis risk in adulthood (≥18 years) until 31/12/2016. Results: Systematic review results were conflicting. In the IPD meta-analysis, ADHD symptoms levels were similar across groups (mean z-score difference 0.00;95% confidence interval [95% CI] −0.07, 0.07). Whereas in the register-linkage study, adults born preterm had a higher relative risk (RR) for ADHD diagnosis compared to term controls (RR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.12, 1.41, p < 0.001). Among preterms, as gestation length (RR = 0.93, 95% CI 0.89, 0.97, p < 0.001) and SD birth weight z-score (RR = 0.88, 95% CI 0.80, 0.97, p < 0.001) increased, ADHD risk decreased. Conclusions: While preterm adults may not report higher levels of ADHD symptoms, their risk of ADHD diagnosis in adulthood is higher.

94. Searching for Quasi Periodic Pulsations in flares from low mass stars using TESS data

Abstract

We have searched the light curves of low mass stars with TESS 2 min cadence data in Cycles 1 & 2 for Quasi Periodic Pulsations (QPPs) in stellar flares. We identified 11 flares from 7 stars which have QPPs with periods ranging from ~10 min to 70 min. We use several methods for determining the loop length of the flares and find they can extend to a handful of stellar radius. Based on scaling relationships we determine the magnetic field strength in the coronal loops and compare the loop lengths to distance to the habitable zone for the host star., The work highlighted in this poster has been submitted to Solar Physics
