Abstract

We study how people's predisposition towards altruism, as measured by tools developed by psychologists, affects their behavior in a voluntary contributions public good experiment. Earlier experiments provide evidence against the strong free rider hypothesis; however, contributions to the public good decrease with repetition. We investigate whether a high level of contributions can be sustained in groups of subjects who have been pre-selected on the basis of their altruistic inclinations. In the first stage of the experiment, each subject responds to a psychology questionnaire that measures various dimensions of one's personality. The subjects are then matched in groups according to their altruism scores, and engage in a voluntary contribution game. We consider whether the levels and dynamics of group contributions differ significantly between the groups with altruists and non-altruists. We find that subjects' altruism has a weak but positive effect on group behavior in the public good game.

Abstract

Blasting activities are described which were carried out during the Tintenbar to Ewingdale project which forms part of the Pacific Highway upgrade in New South Wales, Australia. The project included a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel. Blasting operations were carried out in close proximity to nearby residences, and strict air blast overpressure and ground vibration limits were required to be observed, together with restricted working hours. Technologies employed included the use of continuous environmental monitoring systems to record the results of blast events and provide rapid and easy reporting to stakeholders, the employment of electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to provide flexibility to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face, the application of two software programs and advanced drill rigs for efficient blast design, electronic transfer of design to the drill rigs and in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance, and the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes to reduce overbreak. Abstract

The Eccles Breast Screening Programme is a population-based screening programme for breast cancer, based at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin. It began in 1989 simultaneously with similar programmes in Belgium, France, Greece, Portugal and Spain. The objectives of the Eccles Programme are: (i) to evaluate the impact of mammographic screening on morbidity and mortality from breast cancer in Irish women; and (ii) to address the feasibility and potential value of a national breast cancer screening programme. The specific group targeted for screening is women born in 1925 to 1940 inclusive, in a defined geographical area comprising north Dublin City and County, and Counties Cavan and Monaghan. The areas combined comprise 16% of the country's population; just over 29,000 women were invited for screening. An analysis of the demographic and socioeconomic features of the target population reveals that it represents the total population remarkably well. Participants were invited from a population register to attend one of two screening units. Follow-up treatment for those with abnormalities takes place predominantly at the Mater Hospital where the facilities of the Departments of Pathology, Surgery and Oncology have been made available to the programme. Almost 18,000 women had a mammogram in the first round of screening, an overall response rate of 62%. A total of 129 cancers were detected, a prevalence of breast cancer of 7.2 per 1,000. Of those, 15 (11.6%) were entirely intraduct, and an additional 7 (5.4%) had minimal invasion. This is considerably higher than the proportion of intraduct cancers seen in referral practice populations.
