Background Screening for depression can be challenging among hemodialysis patients due to the overlap of depressive symptoms with dialysis or kidney disease related symptoms. The aim of this study was to understand these overlapping symptoms and develop a depression screening tool for better clinical assessment of depressive symptoms in dialysis patients. Methods We surveyed 1,085 dialysis patients between March 1, 2018 and February 28, 2023 at 15 dialysis facilities in Northeast Ohio with the 9-item patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) and kidney disease quality of life (KDQOL) instrument. To evaluate overlap across questionnaire items, we used structural equation modeling (SEM). We predicted and transformed factor scores to create a hemodialysis-adjusted PHQ-9 (hdPHQ-9). In exploratory analysis (N = 173), we evaluated the performance of the hdPHQ-9 relative to the PHQ-9 that also received a Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Results Our study sample included a high percentage of Black patients (74.6%) and 157 (14.5%) survey participants screened positive for depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 10). The magnitude of overlap was small for (respectively, PHQ-9 item with KDQOLTM item) fatigue with washed out, guilt with burden on family, appetite with nausea and movement with lightheaded. The hdPHQ-9 showed reasonably high sensitivity (0.81 with 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.58, 0.95) and specificity (0.84 with 95% CI 0.77, 0.89); however, this was not a significant improvement from the PHQ-9.Conclusion There is little overlap between depressive symptoms and dialysis or kidney disease symptoms. The PHQ-9 was found to be an appropriate depression screening instrument for dialysis patients.

Child and adolescent participation for health promotion can be realized through participatory action research (PAR). However, there is a lack of understanding regarding the concrete steps needed to actualize empowerment within PAR. We propose a framework that outlines six elements that need to be considered when designing a PAR study that strives to actualize child and adolescent empowerment. These are 1) Safeguarding the necessary resources; 2) Having high quality adult facilitation; 3) Enabling sense-making activities and 4) Investing in capacity building. These four elements make up an environment that may nourish children and adolescents’ social, emotional and cognitive development that may potentially lead to 5) Positive child and adolescent development and 6) Participatory competence. The proposed framework adopts a holistic approach by considering the lived reality of children and adolescents and their capabilities and characteristics. Future research is needed to assess the practical utility of the framework.

This review describes the impact of COVID-19 on the endocrine system, focusing on cortisol signaling and growth factor-induced endocrine resistance. As expected, SARS-CoV-2 infection induces systemic inflammation, resulting in stimulation of the adrenal glands leading to elevated cortisol levels with normal adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels. The cytokine storm could also stimulate cortisol production. However, in some instances, cortisol levels rise independently of ACTH due to a phenomenon known as “pseudo-Cushing’s syndrome,” where adrenal glands become less responsive to ACTH. Plasma proteomic analyses showed that this pattern was variably observed among COVID-19 patients, potentially involving calcium dysregulation and GNAS-regulated activities, ultimately impacting the regulation of microvascular permeability. COVID-19 also exhibited a syndrome resembling endocrine resistance, governed by receptor tyrosine kinase signaling pathways. Mild cases displayed elevated activity of EGFR and MMP9, along with increased expression of survival factors like Bax and Bcl2. In contrast, more severe cases involved IGFR-I and enhanced NOTCH signaling, with altered expression of Bcl2, AKT1, and MAPK8. In summary, these findings describe the complex interplay between COVID-19 and endocrine pathology, particularly endocrine resistance. These insights suggest potential endocrine targets for therapeutic interventions to improve short- and long-term outcomes for COVID-19 patients.

BackgroundSevere COVID-19 is associated with neutrophilic inflammation and immunothrombosis. Several members of the IL-17 cytokine family have been associated with neutrophilic inflammation and activation of the endothelium. Therefore, we investigated whether these cytokines were associated with COVID-19.MethodsWe investigated the association between COVID-19 and circulating plasma levels of IL-17 cytokine family members in participants to the Biobanque québécoise de la COVID-19 (BQC19), a prospective observational cohort and an independent cohort from Western University (London, Ontario). We measured the in vitro impact of IL-17F on intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) cell surface expression and neutrophil adhesion on endothelial cells in culture. The contribution of two Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) pathways was determined using small molecule inhibitors PD184352 (a MKK1/MKK2 inhibitor) and BIRB0796 (a p38 MAPK inhibitor).ResultsWe found increased IL-17D and IL-17F plasma levels when comparing SARS-CoV-2-positive vs negative hospitalized participants. Moreover, increased plasma levels of IL-17D, IL-17E and IL-17F were noted when comparing severe versus mild COVID-19. IL-17F, but not IL-17A, was significantly elevated in people with COVID-19 compared to healthy controls and with more severe disease. In vitro work on endothelial cells treated with IL-17F for 24h showed an increase cell surface expression of ICAM-1 accompanied by neutrophil adhesion. The introduction of two MAPK inhibitors significantly reduced the binding of neutrophils while also reducing ICAM-1 expression at the surface level of endothelial cells, but not its intracellular expression.DiscussionOverall, these results have identified an association between two cytokines of the IL-17 family (IL-17D and IL-17F) with COVID-19 and disease severity. Considering that IL-17F stimulation promotes neutrophil adhesion to the endothelium in a MAPK-dependent manner, it is attractive to speculate that this pathway may contribute to pathogenic immunothrombosis in concert with other molecular effectors.

Hilbert's 16th Problem, about the maximum number of limit cycles of planar polynomial vector fields of a given degree $m$, has been one of the most important driving forces for new developments in the qualitative theory of vector fields. Increasing the dimension, one cannot expect the existence of a finite upper bound for the number of limit cycles of, for instance, $3$D polynomial vector fields of a given degree $m$. Here, as an extension of such a problem in the $3$D space, we investigate the number of isolated invariant tori in $3$D polynomial vector fields. In this context, given a natural number $m$, we denote by $N(m)$ the upper bound for the number of isolated invariant tori of $3$D polynomial vector fields of degree $m$. Based on a recently developed averaging method for detecting invariant tori, our first main result provides a mechanism for constructing $3$D differential vector fields with a number $H$ of normally hyperbolic invariant tori from a given planar differential vector field with $H$ hyperbolic limit cycles. The strength of our mechanism in studying the number $N(m)$ lies in the fact that the constructed $3$D differential vector field is polynomial provided that the given planar differential vector field is polynomial. Accordingly, our second main result establishes a lower bound for $N(m)$ in terms of lower bounds for the number of hyperbolic limit cycles of planar polynomial vector fields of degree $[m/2]-1$. Based on this last result, we apply a methodology due to Christopher & Lloyd to show that $N(m)$ grows as fast as $m^3/128$. Finally, the above-mentioned problem is also formulated for higher dimensional polynomial vector fields.

The averaging method combined with the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction provides sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions of the following class of perturbative $T$-periodic nonautonomous differential equations $x'=F_0(t,x)+\varepsilon F(t,x,\varepsilon)$. Such periodic solutions bifurcate from a manifold $\mathcal{Z}$ of periodic solutions of the unperturbed system $x'=F_0(t,x)$. Determining the stability of this kind of periodic solutions involves the computation of eigenvalues of matrix-valued functions $M(\varepsilon)$, which can done using the theory of $k$-hyperbolic matrices. Usually, in this theory, a diagonalizing process of $k$-jets of $M(\varepsilon)$ must be employed and no general algorithm exists for doing that. In this paper, we develop an alternative strategy for determining the stability of the periodic solutions without the need of such a diagonalization process, which can work even when the diagonalization is not possible. Applications of our result for two families of $4$D vector fields are also presented.

Physics - Computational Physics ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
The rapid development of general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) is allowing the implementation of highly-parallelized Monte Carlo simulation chains for particle physics experiments. This technique is particularly suitable for the simulation of a pixelated charge readout for time projection chambers, given the large number of channels that this technology employs. Here we present the first implementation of a full microphysical simulator of a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) equipped with light readout and pixelated charge readout, developed for the DUNE Near Detector. The software is implemented with an end-to-end set of GPU-optimized algorithms. The algorithms have been written in Python and translated into CUDA kernels using Numba, a just-in-time compiler for a subset of Python and NumPy instructions. The GPU implementation achieves a speed up of four orders of magnitude compared with the equivalent CPU version. The simulation of the current induced on $10^3$ pixels takes around 1 ms on the GPU, compared with approximately 10 s on the CPU. The results of the simulation are compared against data from a pixel-readout LArTPC prototype., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
Measurements of electrons from $\nu_e$ interactions are crucial for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) neutrino oscillation program, as well as searches for physics beyond the standard model, supernova neutrino detection, and solar neutrino measurements. This article describes the selection and reconstruction of low-energy (Michel) electrons in the ProtoDUNE-SP detector. ProtoDUNE-SP is one of the prototypes for the DUNE far detector, built and operated at CERN as a charged particle test beam experiment. A sample of low-energy electrons produced by the decay of cosmic muons is selected with a purity of 95%. This sample is used to calibrate the low-energy electron energy scale with two techniques. An electron energy calibration based on a cosmic ray muon sample uses calibration constants derived from measured and simulated cosmic ray muon events. Another calibration technique makes use of the theoretically well-understood Michel electron energy spectrum to convert reconstructed charge to electron energy. In addition, the effects of detector response to low-energy electron energy scale and its resolution including readout electronics threshold effects are quantified. Finally, the relation between the theoretical and reconstructed low-energy electron energy spectrum is derived and the energy resolution is characterized. The low-energy electron selection presented here accounts for about 75% of the total electron deposited energy. After the addition of lost energy using a Monte Carlo simulation, the energy resolution improves from about 40% to 25% at 50~MeV. These results are used to validate the expected capabilities of the DUNE far detector to reconstruct low-energy electrons., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

The existence of a uniform upper bound for the maximum number of limit cycles of planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by a straight line has been subject of interest of hundreds of papers. After more than 30 years of investigation since Lum-Chua's work, it has remained an open question whether this uniform upper bound exists or not. Here, we give a positive answer for this question by establishing the existence of a natural number $L^*\leq 8$ for which any planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by a straight line has no more than $L^*$ limit cycles. The proof is obtained by combining a newly developed integral characterization of Poincar\'{e} half-maps for linear differential systems with an extension of Khovanski\u{\i}'s theory for investigating the number of intersection points between smooth curves and a particular kind of orbits of vector fields.

Abstract Loss of ambulation is common and highly variable in Parkinson’s disease (PD), and poorly understood from the perspectives of those with PD. Gaining insights to the anticipated perceived trajectories and their drivers, will facilitate patient-centered care. Latent class growth analysis, a person-centered mixture modelling approach, was applied to 16,863 people with PD stratified by early (N = 8612; 10 years) disease to discern clusters with similar longitudinal patterns of self-reported walking difficulty, measured by EuroQoL 5D-5L that is validated for use in PD. There were four clusters in early and mid-disease strata, with a fifth identified in later disease. Trajectories ranged from none to moderate walking difficulty, with small clusters with severe problems. The percentage of subjects with moderate (early = 17.5%, mid = 26.4%, later = 32.5%) and severe (early = 3.8%, mid = 7.4%, later = 15.4%) walking difficulty at baseline increased across disease duration groups. The trajectories tended to be stable with variability in moderate and severe groups. Across strata, clusters with moderate to severe problems were associated with more severe impairment, depression, anxiety, arthritis, higher BMI, lower income, and lower education, but no consistent race or gender differences. The findings reveal distinct longitudinal patterns in perceived difficulties in walking in PD.

Abstract Background Fasting glucose (FG) demonstrates dynamic fluctuations over time and is associated with cardiovascular outcomes, yet current research is limited by small sample sizes and relies solely on baseline glycemic levels. Our research aims to investigate the longitudinal association between FG and silent myocardial infarction (SMI) and also delves into the nuanced aspect of dose response in a large pooled dataset of four cohort studies. Methods We analyzed data from 24,732 individuals from four prospective cohort studies who were free of myocardial infarction history at baseline. We calculated average FG and intra-individual FG variability (coefficient of variation), while SMI cases were identified using 12-lead ECG exams with the Minnesota codes and medical history. FG was measured for each subject during the study’s follow-up period. We applied a Cox regression model with time-dependent variables to assess the association between FG and SMI with adjustment for age, gender, race, Study, smoking, longitudinal BMI, low-density lipoprotein level, blood pressure, and serum creatinine. Results The average mean age of the study population was 60.5 (sd: 10.3) years with median fasting glucose of 97.3 mg/dL at baseline. During an average of 9 years of follow-up, 357 SMI events were observed (incidence rate, 1.3 per 1000 person-years). The association between FG and SMI was linear and each 25 mg/dL increment in FG was associated with a 15% increase in the risk of SMI. This association remained significant after adjusting for the use of lipid-lowering medication, antihypertensive medication, antidiabetic medication, and insulin treatment (HR 1.08, 95% CI 1.01–1.16). Higher average FG (HR per 25 mg/dL increase: 1.17, 95% CI 1.08–1.26) and variability of FG (HR per 1 sd increase: 1.23, 95% CI 1.12–1.34) over visits were also correlated with increased SMI risk. Conclusions Higher longitudinal FG and larger intra-individual variability in FG over time were associated in a dose–response manner with a higher SMI risk. These findings support the significance of routine cardiac screening for subjects with elevated FG, with and without diabetes.

Abstract Background The Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) can develop several weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection and requires a distinct treatment protocol. Distinguishing MIS-C from SARS-CoV-2 negative sepsis (SCNS) patients is important to quickly institute the correct therapies. We performed targeted proteomics and machine learning analysis to identify novel plasma proteins of MIS-C for early disease recognition. Methods A case-control study comparing the expression of 2,870 unique blood proteins in MIS-C versus SCNS patients, measured using proximity extension assays. The 2,870 proteins were reduced in number with either feature selection alone or with a prior COMBAT-Seq batch effect adjustment. The leading proteins were correlated with demographic and clinical variables. Organ system and cell type expression patterns were analyzed with Natural Language Processing (NLP). Results The cohorts were well-balanced for age and sex. Of the 2,870 unique blood proteins, 58 proteins were identified with feature selection (FDR-adjusted P

Determining the existence of compact invariant manifolds is a central quest in the qualitative theory of differential equations. Singularities, periodic solutions, and invariant tori are examples of such invariant manifolds. A classical and useful result from the averaging theory relates the existence of isolated periodic solutions of non-autonomous periodic differential equations, given in a specific standard form, with the existence of simple singularities of the so-called guiding system, which is an autonomous differential equation given in terms of the first non-vanishing higher order averaged function. In this paper, we provide an analogous result for the existence of invariant tori. Namely, we show that a non-autonomous periodic differential equation, given in the standard form, has a normally hyperbolic invariant torus in the extended phase space provided that the guiding system has a hyperbolic limit cycle. We apply this result to show the existence of normally hyperbolic invariant tori in a family of jerk differential equations.

Mathematics - Dynamical Systems - Abstract
In this paper, we consider the family of planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by a straight line without sliding regions, that is, differential systems whose flow transversally crosses the switching line except for at most one point. In the research literature, many papers deal with the problem of determining the maximum number of limit cycles that these differential systems can have. This problem has been usually approached via large case-by-case analyses which distinguish the many different possibilities for the spectra of the matrices of the differential systems. Here, by using a novel integral characterization of Poincar\'e half-maps, we prove, without unnecessary distinctions of matrix spectra, that the optimal uniform upper bound for the number of limit cycles of these differential systems is one. In addition, it is proven that this limit cycle, if it exists, is hyperbolic and its stability is determined by a simple condition in terms of the parameters of the system. As a byproduct of our analysis, a condition for the existence of the limit cycle is also derived., Comment: To appear in Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation

Some people remain healthier throughout life than others but the underlying reasons are poorly understood. Here we hypothesize this advantage is attributable in part to optimal immune resilience (IR), defined as the capacity to preserve and/or rapidly restore immune functions that promote disease resistance (immunocompetence) and control inflammation in infectious diseases as well as other causes of inflammatory stress. We gauge IR levels with two distinct peripheral blood metrics that quantify the balance between (i) CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell levels and (ii) gene expression signatures tracking longevity-associated immunocompetence and mortality-associated inflammation. Profiles of IR metrics in ~48,500 individuals collectively indicate that some persons resist degradation of IR both during aging and when challenged with varied inflammatory stressors. With this resistance, preservation of optimal IR tracked (i) a lower risk of HIV acquisition, AIDS development, symptomatic influenza infection, and recurrent skin cancer; (ii) survival during COVID-19 and sepsis; and (iii) longevity. IR degradation is potentially reversible by decreasing inflammatory stress. Overall, we show that optimal IR is a trait observed across the age spectrum, more common in females, and aligned with a specific immunocompetence-inflammation balance linked to favorable immunity-dependent health outcomes. IR metrics and mechanisms have utility both as biomarkers for measuring immune health and for improving health outcomes.

- Abstract
In this article, we situate the relatively new wave of technology-enabled personalized learning platforms within the broader policy context of institutional accountability. Although many education technology innovations were developed in response to heightened accountability pressures, technology-enabled personalization introduces new institutional rules, cultures, and norms that may be at odds with the goals of accountability. Using the adoption of a personalized, blended learning mathematics program at five U.S. schools as a case study, we describe how teachers, school leaders, and program staff navigated institutional pressures to improve state grade-level standardized test scores while implementing tasks and technologies designed to personalize student learning.

- Abstract
Over the past several decades large philanthropies have adopted aggressive approaches to education reform that scholars have labeled "venture philanthropy." These efforts focused on broad changes to schooling and education policy, borrowing techniques from the venture capital world. But many foundations have recently become convinced that market forces and macro-level policymaking alone cannot drive educational improvement, particularly in areas related to classroom teaching and learning. In response, foundations have begun to design their own instructional innovations and identify providers to implement them. This paper interprets these recent efforts as early evidence of a distinct adaptation in the evolving role of philanthropies, which we dub design philanthropy. Although this approach represents an attempt by foundations to simultaneously increase democratic engagement, directly influence the instructional core, and spur educational innovation, it poses new risks for coherence, scalability, and sustainability in education policymaking.

ABSTRACT Multicellular cyanobacteria, like Nostoc punctiforme, rely on septal junctions for cell–cell communication, which is crucial for coordinating various physiological processes including differentiation of N2-fixing heterocysts, spore-like akinetes, and hormogonia—short, motile filaments important for dispersal. In this study, we functionally characterize a protein, encoded by gene Npun_F4142, which in a random mutagenesis approach, initially showed a motility-related function. The reconstructed Npun_F4142 knockout mutant exhibits further distinct phenotypic traits, including altered hormogonia formation with significant reduced motility, inability to differentiate heterocysts and filament fragmentation. For that reason, we named the protein FraI (fragmentation phenotype). The mutant displays severely impaired cell–cell communication, due to almost complete absence of the nanopore array in the septal cell wall, which is an essential part of the septal junctions. Despite lack of communication, hormogonia in the ΔfraI mutant maintain motility and phototactic behavior, even though less pronounced than the wild type (WT). This suggests an alternative mechanism for coordinated movement beyond septal junctions. Our study underscores the significance of FraI in nanopore formation and cell differentiation, and provides additional evidence for the importance of septal junction formation and communication in various differentiation traits of cyanobacteria. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the regulatory networks governing multicellular cyanobacterial behavior, with implications for broader insights into microbial multicellularity.IMPORTANCEThe filament-forming cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme serves as a valuable model for studying cell differentiation, including the formation of nitrogen-fixing heterocysts and hormogonia. Hormogonia filaments play a crucial role in dispersal and plant colonization, providing a nitrogen source through atmospheric nitrogen fixation, thus holding promise for fertilizer-free agriculture. The coordination among the hormogonia cells enabling uniform movement toward the positive signal remains poorly understood. This study investigates the role of septal junction-mediated communication in hormogonia differentiation and motility, by studying a ΔfraI mutant with significantly impaired communication. Surprisingly, impaired communication does not abolish synchronized filament movement, suggesting an alternative coordination mechanism. These findings deepen our understanding of cyanobacterial biology and have broader implications for multicellular behavior in prokaryotes.

The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries provide pattern-recognition logic essential to the reconstruction of particle interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment far detector. ProtoDUNE-SP, located at CERN, is exposed to a charged-particle test beam. This paper gives an overview of the Pandora reconstruction algorithms and how they have been tailored for use at ProtoDUNE-SP. In complex events with numerous cosmic-ray and beam background particles, the simulated reconstruction and identification efficiency for triggered test-beam particles is above 80% for the majority of particle type and beam momentum combinations. Specifically, simulated 1 GeV/$c$ charged pions and protons are correctly reconstructed and identified with efficiencies of 86.1$\pm0.6$% and 84.1$\pm0.6$%, respectively. The efficiencies measured for test-beam data are shown to be within 5% of those predicted by the simulation., Comment: 39 pages, 20 figures. Accepted version. Published version available in Eur. Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
A central component of the European Spallation Source is the high-power proton accelerator. The accelerator aims in the future to provide 2 GeV protons to a rotating tungsten target for the production of neutrons at 5 MW of average beam power for neutron scattering studies. Extensive shielding surrounds the accelerator, in order to provide sufficient safety for the public and workers against radiation produced along it's length. This largely comprises several meters of soil, called the berm, and concrete structures located around the accelerator tunnel. However, due to the need for access to the accelerator, during maintenance and connections for other utilities, the shielding contains a number of penetrations which leads to weaknesses in localized areas. For these reasons, shielding design of such a facility must take care to address issues related to both the deep-penetration of the radiation through thick shields, while at the same time accounting for the streaming nature of the radiation through ducts and chicanes. In addition, radiation produced from activated components of the accelerator also poses risks for workers and public. For example, activated magnets will need maintenance and workers may need to access areas where activated water circulates. Thus, activation analyses are also needed in combination with the prompt-dose rate estimates for a complete analysis. In this summary, we present the results of a series of such studies carried out on various components around the ESS accelerator., Comment: 14th International Conference on Radiation Shielding and 21st Topical Meeting of the Radiation Protection and Shielding Division (ICRS 14/RPSD 2022) meeting

- Abstract
Sustaining human capital in the agricultural industry is critical to the United States' ability to maintain preeminence in the global economy. This goal has become a greater challenge due to declining participation in agricultural academic programs, particularly at 1890 institutions. Although the anticipated outcome of the 1965 "merger" of the New Farmers of America (NFA) and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) was to achieve synergy in this effort, the outcome was counterproductive in terms of the participation by people of color. This qualitative study utilized interviews, guided by 7 questions, to examine 22 African American teachers' perceptions of the impact of the merger. Participants taught agriculture in public schools in one southern state and/or were members and/or advisors in the NFA. Participants perceived that the merger was a "takeover" that led to a critical absence of participation and leadership development among African American youths. Participants agreed that the merger had a drastic, negative impact on the number of African American agriculture teachers produced and the number of individuals in the pipeline for agriculture-related careers, thus, a negative impact on building the industry's human capital. Findings from this study should induce innovative strategies to overcome the shortage of African Americans pursuing agriculture-related careers.

Abstract Background Sepsis is a dysregulated systemic inflammatory response triggered by infection, resulting in organ dysfunction. A major challenge in clinical pediatrics is to identify sepsis early and then quickly intervene to reduce morbidity and mortality. As blood biomarkers hold promise as early sepsis diagnostic tools, we aimed to measure a large number of blood inflammatory biomarkers from pediatric sepsis patients to determine their predictive ability, as well as their correlations with clinical variables and illness severity scores. Methods Pediatric patients that met sepsis criteria were enrolled, and clinical data and blood samples were collected. Fifty-eight inflammatory plasma biomarker concentrations were determined using immunoassays. The data were analyzed with both conventional statistics and machine learning. Results Twenty sepsis patients were enrolled (median age 13 years), with infectious pathogens identified in 75%. Vasopressors were administered to 85% of patients, while 55% received invasive ventilation and 20% were ventilated non-invasively. A total of 24 inflammatory biomarkers were significantly different between sepsis patients and age/sex-matched healthy controls. Nine biomarkers (IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, M-CSF, IL-1RA, hyaluronan, HSP70, MMP3, and MMP10) yielded AUC parameters > 0.9 (95% CIs: 0.837-1.000; p

Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic cascades. Results from testing the algorithm on data from ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype of the DUNE far detector, are presented. The network identifies track- and shower-like particles, as well as Michel electrons, with high efficiency. The performance of the algorithm is consistent between data and simulation., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6x6x6m3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties, Comment: 31 pages, 29 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
This document presents the concept and physics case for a magnetized gaseous argon-based detector system (ND-GAr) for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Near Detector. This detector system is required in order for DUNE to reach its full physics potential in the measurement of CP violation and in delivering precision measurements of oscillation parameters. In addition to its critical role in the long-baseline oscillation program, ND-GAr will extend the overall physics program of DUNE. The LBNF high-intensity proton beam will provide a large flux of neutrinos that is sampled by ND-GAr, enabling DUNE to discover new particles and search for new interactions and symmetries beyond those predicted in the Standard Model., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021
