51. ASCA observations of the iron K complex of Circinus X-1 near zero phase: spectral evidence for partial covering

Abstract: We report on ASCA energy spectra of Cir X-1 taken near its zero phase on 1994 August 4-5. The ASCA SIS detectors allow a more detailed study of the iron K complex than has been possible before. We find that prior to a sudden upward flux transition the dominant iron K feature appears to consist of a large edge from neutral or nearly-neutral iron. The depth of the edge corresponds to an absorption column of about 1.5E24 cm^{-2}, while little absorption over that expected from the Galaxy is seen at lower X-ray energies. The differential absorption at high and low X-ray energies combined with the iron edge energy are strong evidence that partial covering is a crucial determinant of the behaviour observed from Cir X-1. The continuum spectral variability observed by ASCA can also be understood naturally in terms of partial covering column changes. There is evidence for a relatively weak emission line from neutral iron with an equivalent width of only about 65 eV. After the flux transition, the strength of the edge feature is greatly reduced, suggesting a large reduction in the amount of partial covering. For a large region of statistically acceptable chi-squared parameter space, the luminosity of Cir X-1, after correction for partial covering, need not change during the transition. We discuss models for the partial covering and suggest that X-ray scattering by electrons may be important. Abstract: We report on the variability of the iron K emission line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15 during a four-day ASCA observation. The line consists of a narrow core at an energy of about 6.4 keV, and a broad red wing extending to below 5 keV, which are interpreted as line emission arising from the inner parts of an accretion disk. The narrow core correlates well with the continuum flux whereas the broad wing weakly anti-correlates. When the source is brightest, the line is dominated by the narrow core, whilst during a deep minimum, the narrow core is very weak and a huge red tail appears. However, at other times when the continuum shows rather rapid changes, the broad wing is more variable than the narrow core, and shows evidence for correlated changes contrary to its long time scale behaviour. The peculiar line profile during the deep minimum spectrum suggests that the line emitting region is very close to a central spinning (Kerr) black hole where enormous gravitational effects operate., Comment: 13 pages, 13 ps figures, uses mn.sty (included) Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature

Abstract: The LiteBIRD mission will map polarized fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to search for the signature of gravitational waves from inflation, potentially opening a window on the Universe a fraction of a second after the Big Bang. CMB measurements from space give access to the largest angular scales and the full frequency range to constrain Galactic foregrounds, and LiteBIRD has been designed to take best advantage of the unique window of space. LiteBIRD will have a powerful ability to separate Galactic foreground emission from the CMB due to its 15 frequency bands spaced between 40 and 402 GHz and sensitive 100-mK bolometers. LiteBIRD will provide stringent control of systematic errors due to the benign thermal environment at the second Lagrange point, L2, 20-K rapidly rotating half-wave plates on each telescope, and the ability to crosscheck its results by measuring both the reionization and recombination peaks in the B-mode power spectrum. LiteBIRD would be the next step in the series of CMB space missions, COBE, WMAP, and Planck, each of which has given landmark scientific discoveries.

Abstract: LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led Strategic Large-Class mission designed to search for the existence of the primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary phase of the Universe, through the measurements of their imprint onto the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These measurements, requiring unprecedented sensitivity, will be performed over the full sky, at large angular scales, and over 15 frequency bands from 34 GHz to 448 GHz. The LiteBIRD instruments consist of three telescopes, namely the Low-, Medium-and High-Frequency Telescope (respectively LFT, MFT and HFT). We present in this paper an overview of the design of the Medium-Frequency Telescope (89{224 GHz) and the High-Frequency Telescope (166{448 GHz), the so-called MHFT, under European responsibility, which are two cryogenic refractive telescopes cooled down to 5 K. They include a continuous rotating half-wave plate as the first optical element, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lenses and more than three thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors cooled to 100 mK. We provide an overview of the concept design and the remaining specific challenges that we have to face in order to achieve the scientific goals of LiteBIRD.

Abstract: We have investigated the characteristics of radiation damage to charge coupled devices (CCDs) in the space environment. The X-ray astronomy satellite ASCA launched on February 20, 1993 in low Earth orbit carries CCDs specially developed for soft X-ray detection. We have traced the performance of the CCDs for 3 years. We have observed both the gradual decrease of charge transfer efficiency (CTE) and the increase of dark current. These are phenomenologically explained by the increase of charge traps due to irradiation by high energy charged particles. However, some of the effects of the radiation damage in the CCD are quite non-uniform over the chip on various scales. We discuss characteristics of the charge traps and possible origins of the non-uniformity.

71. The Effect of Changes in the ASCA Calibration on the Fe-K Lines in Active Galaxies

Abstract: The ASCA calibration has evolved considerably since launch and indeed, is still evolving. There have been concerns in the literature that changes in the ASCA calibration have resulted in the Fe-K lines in active galaxies (AGN) now being systematically narrower than was originally thought. If this were true, a large body of ASCA results would be impacted. In particular, it has been claimed that the broad red wing (when present) of the Fe-K line has been considerably weakened by changes in the ASCA calibration. We demonstrate explicitly that changes in the, ASCA calibration over a period of about eight years have a negligible effect on the width, strength, or shape of the Fe-K lines. The reduction in both width and equivalent width is only approximately 8% or less. We confirm this with simulations and individual sources, as well as sample average profiles. The average profile for type 1 AGN is still very broad, with the red wing extending down to approximately 4 keV. The reason for the claimed, apparently large, discrepancies is that in some sources the Fe-K line is complex, and a single-Gaussian model, being an inadequate description of the line profile, picks up different portions of the profile with different calibration. However, one cannot make inferences about calibration or astrophysics of the sources using models which do not describe the data. Better modeling of the Fe-K in such cases gives completely consistent results with both old and current calibration. Thus, inadequate modeling of the Fe-K line in these sources can seriously underestimate the line width and equivalent width, and therefore lead to incorrect deductions about the astrophysical implications.

79. Is the changing orbital period of EXO 0748-676 evidence for a triple system?

Abstract: We present eclipse timing measurements of the low-mass X-ray binary (LMxB) EXO 0748-676 made with ASCA. These measurements, when combined with previous results, are consistent with the hypothesis that eclipse times are modulated by a third body. The parameters of the orbit of the postulated third body are now apparently well constrained and will allow further observations to effectively test the hypothesis that EXO 0748-676 is a triple system. The derived orbital parameters are such that, unless the inclination angle is very low, a third body in the system must have a mass less than the lower limit for a main-sequence star.

80. Spectral and correlated timing behaviour of GX 5-1

Abstract: We have analyzed the X-ray spectral and fast timing behavior of the Z-source GX 5-1 using X-ray color-color diagrams (CDs), hardness-intensity diagrams (HIDs) and power spectra. We used all EXOSAT ME data on GX 5-1, a total of seven observations during 1983-1985. We detect, for the first time in GX 5-1, secular motion of the well-known 'Z' pattern through the CDs and HIDs. This behavior resembles Cyg X-2, but in GX 5-1 has a smaller amplitude. We find that the power spectra do not change when the 'Z' moves, and are only dependent on the position inside the 'Z'. We also report, for the first time in GX 5-1, indications of flaring-branch (FB) like behavior, both during one of our EXOSAT observations, and during observations done with Ginga. As the secular changes of the position of the 'Z' pattern in the CD and HID are relatively small we investigated in detail the systematic changes in the EXOSAT ME detectors using the only bright and steady X-ray 'standard star', the Crab Nebula. Finally, we determined an intrinsic CD of GX 5-1 (i.e. a soft photon flux-ratio versus hard photon flux-ratio diagram) in a model independent way, by applying a first order correction for the detector efficiency. It is shown, using data of the Crab Nebula, that this method works reasonably well for the determination of intrinsic colors.

81. Evidence of Circumstellar Matter Surrounding the Hercules X-1 System

Abstract: We analyze data from two eclipse ingresses of Her X-1 observed with Ginga on 1989 April 30 and May 19. These observations occur, respectively, during the MAIN HIGH and SHORT HIGH states in the 35 day modulation of Her X-1 intensity. We find significant residual X-ray flux during eclipse, with a gradual decrease in flux following the occultation of the neutron star by the atmosphere of HZ Her. During the central part of the eclipse the count rate becomes nearly constant, at 0.5 mcrab in the energy range 1.7-36.8 keV. From a spec- tral analysis of the residual emission during the total eclipse of the central source in the MAIN MGH state, we determine the energy spectral index, alpha = 0.8, similar to that before eclipse. A remarkable feature of the eclipse spectrum is that it does not show a significant iron line feature in contrast to massive wind-fed pulsars, such as Vela X-1 and Cen X-3. From a timing analysis of the same eclipse data, we show that there are no pulses. These results imply that the emission comes from the scattering of continuum X-rays by material in a region considerably larger than the companion star. An extended accretion disk corona may be responsible for this scattering. However, partial eclipse of an extended accretion disk corona is insufficient to account for the count rates in mid-eclipse, when known parameters of the binary system are used. Based on the present results, we suggest that scattering occurs not only in the accretion disk corona but also in the circumstellar matter surrounding the system of Her X-1/HZ Her.

82. The time-delay spectrum of GX 5-1 in its horizontal branch

Abstract: Using a cross-spectral technique we investigate time delays between intensity variations of GX 5-1 in 10 X-ray spectral channels. The data were taken during a 1989 Ginga observation during which the source was in its horizontal-branch spectral state. We develope a new method to measure 'time-delay spectra' in fixed Fourier frequency ranges and use it to determine the energy and intensity dependence of time delays in the low-frequency noise (nu less than 2 Hz), the horizontal branch quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO), and the QPO second harmonic. These are the first time-delay spectra of a Z-source in its horizontal branch, and the first detection of time delays in the second harmonic. We consider two mechanisms for the production of the time lags: Comptonization and evolving shots. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of Compton scattering in a homogeneous, isotropic, central corona and show that it qualitatively explain the observed energy and time-delay spectra, but that it cannot explain the differences in the QPO first and second harmomnic time-delay spectra, nor the observed dependence of the QPO fractional rms variability upon energy. We consider implications of our results for millisecond pulsar searches in low-mass X-ray binaries.

Abstract: We present the results of an analysis of simultaneous X-ray (Ginga) and radio Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the Z source GX 340+0. We find GX 340+0 in different X-ray states at the times of the radio observations. We find some evidence for a global correlation between X-ray state and radio flux on a time scale of days; however, this correlation does not hold on shorter time scales.

Abstract: © 2017. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E ≈ 3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of S xvi (E ≃ 3.44 keV rest-frame) - a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. A confirmation of this interesting feature has to wait for a more sensitive observation with a future calorimeter experiment.

85. Simultaneous ROSAT/Ginga observations of 4U 1820-30

Abstract: We have made simultaneous Ginga LAC and ROSAT PSPC observations of 4U 1820-30. The 685-s orbital light curves obtained with the two instruments are very similar, indicating that the energy dependence of the orbital modulation is small. Our measurements extend the baseline over which the period variations can be measured to 15 yr. The previous possibility, that the changes in the period are themselves periodic, with a period of about 8 yr, is no longer preferred over a constant P(dot). Over the interval 1976-91 the period has decreased, rather than increasing as predicted by the standard model for the orbital evolution of the binary. The average period derivative P(dot)/P was (-0.88 +/- 0.16) x 10 exp -7/yr, different by 11 sigma from the predicted value. Under the assumption that there are no intrinsic changes in the light curve that mimic a period change, we discuss three possible explanations.

Abstract: We present the results of coordinated, partly simultaneous, optical and X-ray (Ginga) observations of the low-mass X-ray binary Sco X-1. We find that the division between the optically bright and faint state, at a blue magnitude B = 12.8, corresponds to the change from the normal to the flaring branch in the X-ray color-color diagram as proposed by Priedhorsky et al. (1986). From archival Walraven data we find that in both optical states the orbital light curve is approximately sinusoidal, and have a similar amplitudes.

88. X-ray variability of Scorpius X-1 during a multiwavelength campaign

Abstract: Consideration is given to the X-ray variability of Scorpius X-1, which was observed with Ginga on March 9-11, 1989 as part of a multiwavelength campaign. The temporal characteristics observed, including quasi-periodic oscillations, HF noise, and VLF noise, are consistent with previous observations of Sco X-1. Quasi-periodic oscillations are observed on both the normal branch and the lower flaring branch, but not on the upper flaring branch. Limits are placed on the fractional rms variation of quasi-period oscillations on the upper flaring branch of less than or approximately equal to 2 percent of the total intensity. The characteristics of the observed red noise components are found to vary along the flaring branch. The fractional rms variation of VLF noise increases from less than 2 to greater than 6 percent as Sco X-1 moves from the flaring branch-normal branch vertex to the upper end of the flaring branch.

Abstract: During Ginga observations of the 'Rapid Burster' in August 1988, strong quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were detected in its X-ray intensity. The QPOs had centroid frequencies of 5 and 2 Hz during type II X-ray bursts which lasted for 10 and 30 s, respectively. The presence of the QPOs is correlated with the time scale-invariant burst profile. They are very strong during the initial peak in the burst, absent in the second peak, and strong again at the onset of the third peak. From an analysis of the X-ray spectrum as observed during the maxima and minima of the oscillations, it is found that the oscillations can be described by changes of the temperature of a blackbody emitter of constant apparent area.

Abstract: Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and many astrophysical processes. However, knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, the mass of which is much larger than the combined mass of all the stars in the cluster, is lacking. Such knowledge would enable insights into the injection of mechanical energy by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for determining cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50-million-kelvin diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The active galactic nucleus of the central galaxy NGC 1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These bubbles probably induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas, preventing runaway radiative cooling - a process known as active galactic nucleus feedback. Here we report X-ray observations of the core of the Perseus cluster, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere in which the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164 ± 10 kilometres per second in the region 30-60 kiloparsecs from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150 ± 70 kilometres per second is found across the 60-kiloparsec image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is four per cent of the thermodynamic pressure, with large-scale shear at most doubling this estimate. Abstract: During the search for counterparts of very-high-energy gamma-ray sources, we serendipitously discovered large, extended, low surface brightness emission from PWNe around pulsars with the ages up to ~100 kyrs, a discovery made possible by the low and stable background of the Suzaku X-ray satellite. A systematic study of a sample of 8 of these PWNe, together with Chandra datasets, has revealed us that the nebulae keep expanding up to for ~100 kyrs, although time scale of the synchrotron X-ray emission is only ~60 yr for typical magnetic fields of 100 microG. Our result suggests that the accelerated electrons up to ~80 TeV can escape from the PWNe without losing most energies. Moreover, in order to explain the observed correlation between the X-ray size and the pulsar spindwon age, the magnetic field strength in the PWNe must decrease with time., 11 pages, 17 figures, ApJL, in press
