In this study, a survey with 4,580 residents in the Yangtze River Middle Reaches Megalopolis, central China, was conducted to assess the perceived importance of local ESs. Then, principal component analysis was used to identify their perceived coincidence (i.e., ES bundles), and an automatic linear model was used to reveal how the perceived ES importance and ES bundles were associated with socioenvironmental factors, including demographics, environmental awareness, and living environment. Our results showed that the provisioning ESs, especially water supply, had relatively higher perceived importance. There was no significant difference in perceived ES importance and ES bundles between experts and ordinary residents; thus, experts may recommend practices that meet the local residents’ wishes in the YRMRM. In addition, we disclosed three bundles of perceived ES (i.e., green environment service bundle, ecological stability service bundle, and grain service bundle), which encompassed ES from different ES categories. Potential tradeoff existed in different ES bundles, mainly due to the divergent preferences of different residents. For example, residents with more bus services near the residence tended to perceive green environment service bundle as more important, but perceive ecological stability service bundle as less important. This study adds important first-hand empirical data to the field of the public preferences of local residents for a region of high economic and ecological importance in China, which could provide more information and scientific basis for socially just and sustainable region environmental planning and management.

Abstract With the development of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) nanotechnology, various DNA nanostructures and DNA devices have been constructed, which exhibit potential applications in material science and biomedicine. Taking advantage of the programmability and biocompatibility of DNA, novel building block to chemically functionalize DNA with hydrophobic organic molecules has attracted more and more attention. Driving by amphiphilicity, DNA‐organic molecular amphiphiles have been demonstrated to self‐assemble or further induce hierarchically assemblies, providing novel‐specific properties. In this minireview, we summarize the recent progress of DNA organic molecular amphiphiles including their synthesis, self‐assembly behavior in aqueous solution, and the amphiphilic self‐assembly based on hierarchical DNA nano‐structures. We further briefly discuss the perspective of the application of the DNA‐organic molecular amphiphiles.

The FDA approved drug aprepitant is an antagonist of the Neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R). Here the authors present aprepitant bound NK1R crystal structures and use NMR spectroscopy to gain further insights into the dynamics of aprepitant binding, which is of interest for further drug development.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is widely used in various areas such as logistics, supply-chain management, and access control. The new challenge for designing an RFID tag is how to embed a low-cost and low-power consumption algorithm into a compact RFID tag chip. This paper presents a passive HF-band tag chip supporting ISO/IEC 14443 type A/B protocol with low-cost and low-power consumption. In the Analog Front End, a bridge rectifier with 73.76% power conversion efficiency is presented to accomplish RF-dc conversion. A robust demodulator with both 10% and 100% ASK demodulation capabilities and a subcarrier-based modulator are designed to complete the data transfer process. Moreover, a burr-eliminating power ON/OFF reset circuit is proposed to provide a reset signal for the system. In the digital baseband controller, a linear feedback shift register-based light-weight authentication protocol is presented to ensure data security while reducing resource overhead. The embedded 8-Kb EEPROM contains eight independent keys for eight different application fields. The tag chip is fabricated in HJ025 2P4M CMOS process with an area of 1.1mm $\times $ 1.18mm and total static power consumption of $116.45~\mu \text{W}$ . The low cost and low-power consumption ensure the tag chip, especially suitable for smart cards.

In order to obtain evaluation information about the various aspects of products or services, the Fine-grained Topic Sentiment Unification (FG-TSU) model is proposed based on the improvement of LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) model. Firstly, the topics are divided into local and global topics. And the sliding window is introduced to lower co-occurrence information from document to sentence level, to implement fine-grained extraction of local topics. Secondly, the indicator variables are used to distinguish aspects and opinions. Finally, we incorporate the sentiment layer into LDA model to obtain the sentiment polarity of the whole review and specific aspects. The datasets of hotel and mobile phone are selected to verify the domain adaptability of this model. The experimental results verified the feasibility of FG-TSU model in the realization of opinion mining.

Software maintenance is indispensable in the software development process. Developers need to spend a lot of time and energy to understand the software when maintaining the software, which increases the difficulty of software maintenance. It is a feasible method to understand the software through the key classes of the software. Identifying the key classes of the software can help developers understand the software more quickly. Existing techniques on key class identification mainly use static analysis techniques to extract software structure information. Such structure information may contain redundant relationships that may not exist when the software runs and ignores the actual interaction times between classes. In this paper, we propose an approach based on dynamic analysis and entropy-based metrics to identify key classes in the Java GUI software system, called KEADA (identifying KEy clAsses based on Dynamic Analysis and entropy-based metrics). First, KEADA extracts software structure information by recording the calling relationship between classes during the software running process; such structure information takes into account the actual interaction of classes. Second, KEADA represents the structure information as a weighted directed network and further calculates the importance of each node using an entropy-based metric OSE (One-order Structural Entropy). Third, KEADA ranks classes in descending order according to their OSE values and selects a small number of classes as the key class candidates. In order to verify the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted experiments on three Java GUI software systems and compared them with seven state-of-the-art approaches. We used the Friedman test to evaluate all approaches, and the results demonstrate that our approach performs best in all software systems.

In this work, we have combined the advantages of sequence programmability of DNA nanotechnology and optical birefringence of liquid crystals (LCs). Herein, DNA amphiphiles were adsorbed onto LC droplets. A unique phenomenon of LC droplet aggregation was demonstrated, using DNA-modified LC droplets, through complementary DNA hybridization. Further functionalization of DNA-modified LC droplets with a desired DNA sequence was used to detect a wide range of chemicals and biomolecules, such as Hg2+, thrombin, and enzymes, through LC droplet aggregation and vice versa, which can be seen through the naked eye. These DNA-modified LC droplets can be printed onto a desired patterned surface with temperature-induced responsiveness and reversibility. Overall, our work is the first to report DNA-modified LC droplet, which provides a general detection platform based on the development of DNA aptamers. Additionally, this work inspires the exploration of surface information visualization combined with microcontact printing.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are a large membrane protein family found in higher organisms, including the human body. GPCRs mediate cellular responses to diverse extracellular stimuli and thus control key physiological functions, which makes them important targets for drug design. Signaling by GPCRs is related to the structure and dynamics of these proteins, which are modulated by extrinsic ligands as well as by intracellular binding partners such as G proteins and arrestins. Here, we review some basics of using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in solution for the characterization of GPCR conformations and intermolecular interactions that relate to transmembrane signaling.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite laminates (CFRPs) with weak impact damage tolerance were toughened with Ultra-high Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber in the form of two-dimensional hybrid weaving in this paper. The effects of hybrid woven on impact behaviour and residual flexural stiffness of CFRPs, compared with plain carbon-fiber woven laminates, were investigated by drop weight impact and four-point bending experimental tests, together with finite element analysis (FEA). Indentation measurement and X-ray tomography, together with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were employed for a comprehensive inspection of external and internal damage of specimens subjected to impact previously. A significant increment of 71.43% in penetration energy revealed the lower sensitivity of hybrid laminates to impact events in comparison with the pure carbon fiber reinforced ones, while post-impact flexural tests demonstrated that two-dimensional hybrid weaving was capable of bringing about a promotion of 10.1% in damage tolerance. The suppression mechanism of damage propagation in impact test, which lead to an enhancement in damage tolerance and structural integrity, was explained.

Frame-Guided Assembly (FGA) strategy has been recently reported to prepare vesicles with customized shapes and sizes. However, the effects of the interaction between leading hydrophobic groups (LHGs) and amphiphiles on the thermodynamic and kinetic control of the FGA process haven't been fully understood. In this work, we employed the pH low-insertion peptide (pHLIP) as the LHGs because its interaction with lipids could be finely tuned by pH and investigated the mechanism of FGA in detail. Our study demonstrated the peptide frames could successfully guide the assembly of lipids to form hetero-liposomes below the pH transition point owing to the strong peptide and lipids interaction. The pH-dependent kinetic controlled FGA process was proved and factors affecting the FGA process were also investigated systematically. We believe this pH-responsive FGA strategy improved our knowledge on the mechanism of the FGA and provide inspiration in understanding the sophisticated assembly behavior in life.

Due to the gas injection and production of underground salt caves during the operational phase, rock salt is often subjected to a combined stress of cyclic pressure and constant pressure. In order to investigate the damage evolution of rock salt under different combined stresses, the uniaxial cyclic loading test and cyclic creep test were carried out. The stress-strain curves, energy characteristics, energy dissipation, and damage of rock salt in the two experiments were analyzed and compared. The test results show that the stress-strain curves of the two tests presented three stages of “sparse”-“dense”-“sparse.” As the maximum stress increases, the stage of “dense” will decrease and the rock salt cycle life will decrease. The relationship between cycle life and Δσ (difference between maximum and minimum stress in the tests) is an exponential function under cyclic loading and a linear relationship under cyclic creep. Based on the experimental data, the energy dissipation of rock salt is analyzed. The damage variables were defined from the perspective of energy dissipation, and the damage evolution of rock salt under two tests was obtained. There are three corresponding stages of energy dissipation and damage: initial, constant speed, and acceleration. The damage model is obtained by inverse functioning the s function, and then the correction coefficient is added to the model to obtain the modified damage model. The modified damage model is compared with the experimental data. The results show that the model can accurately describe the three stages of rock salt damage. The significance of parameters in the modifying damage model is also discussed.

With the rapid development of mobile Internet, the social network has become an important platform for users to receive, release, and disseminate information. In order to get more valuable information and implement effective supervision on public opinions, it is necessary to study the public opinions, sentiment tendency, and the evolution of the hot events in social networks of a smart city. In view of social networks’ characteristics such as short text, rich topics, diverse sentiments, and timeliness, this paper conducts text modeling with words co-occurrence based on the topic model. Besides, the sentiment computing and the time factor are incorporated to construct the dynamic topic-sentiment mixture model (TSTS). Then, four hot events were randomly selected from the microblog as datasets to evaluate the TSTS model in terms of topic feature extraction, sentiment analysis, and time change. The results show that the TSTS model is better than the traditional models in topic extraction and sentiment analysis. Meanwhile, by fitting the time curve of hot events, the change rules of comments in the social network is obtained.

With the development of tourism, the number of multistorey buildings in mountain areas is increasing gradually, and the requirements of the form and bearing capacity of foundation in landslide areas are getting more demanding than ever. In-situ testing of rock and soil mass in slope area has important practical significance for improving the stability of building foundation. Taking a project in Baishi Mountain located in southwest of China as an example, firstly, the geological structure and mechanical properties of soil are analyzed. Then, two types of pile foundations, i.e., empty-bottom pile foundations and solid-bottom pile foundations, are designed based on the characteristics of the geological structure for carrying out the static load test on pile foundation. The test results are as follows: (a) the load settlement curve (Q-S) of the empty-bottom test pile shows a steep drop, while the Q-S curve of the solid-bottom test pile shows a gradual change, showing that the end-bearing friction pile’s property and the ultimate bearing capacity of the solid-bottom pile are higher than those of the empty-bottom pile. (b) The maximum lateral friction of the four test piles is 139.158 kPa, 148.015 kPa, 150.828 kPa, and 154.956 kPa, respectively. (c) The shaft skin resistance under ultimate load is coming close to the maximum value, and the maximum values are 9.792 mm, 7.939 mm, 9.881 mm, and 14.97 mm, respectively. Research results can serve as design bases for the pile foundation of multistorey buildings located in landslide areas of Baishi Mountain in the southwest of China and also as references for the engineering application of pile foundation in similar geological fracture areas.

The advent of mobile scenario-based consumption popularizes and gradually maturates the application of point of interest (POI) recommendation services based on geographical location. However, the insufficient fusion of heterogeneous data in the current POI recommendation services leads to poor recommendation quality. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid POI recommendation model (NHRM) based on user characteristics and spatial-temporal factors to enhance the recommendation effect. The proposed model contains three sub-models. The first model considers user preferences, forgetting characteristics, user influence, and trajectories. The second model studies the impact of the correlation between the locations of POIs and calculates the check-in probability of POI with the two-dimensional kernel density estimation method. The third model analyzes the influence of category of POI. Consequently, the above results were combined and top-K POIs were recommended to target users. The experimental results on Yelp and Meituan data sets showed that the recommendation performance of our method is superior to some other methods, and the problems of cold-start and data sparsity are alleviated to a certain extent.

The outlet conduit is an important construction connecting the outlet of the pump guide vane and the outlet pool; in order to study the hydraulic performance of the straight outlet conduit of the axial-flow pump device, this paper adopts the method of numerical simulation and analyzes the influence of the division pier on the pressure and velocity distribution inside and near the wall of the straight outlet conduit based on three design schemes. Four pressure pulsation measuring points were arranged in the straight outlet conduit, and the low-frequency pulsation characteristic information inside the straight outlet conduit with and without the division pier was extracted by wavelet packet reconstruction. The results show that the addition of a division pier has an effect on the hydraulic loss, near-wall pressure and velocity distribution in the straight outlet conduit. A small high-pressure zone is formed near the wall at the starting position of the division pier, and a large high-speed zone is formed on the left side at the starting position of the division pier. The length of the division pier has no significant effect on the flow distribution of the straight outlet conduit and the pressure and velocity distribution near the wall. Under different working conditions, each monitoring point has the maximum energy in the sub-band (0~31.25 Hz). With the increase of the flow rate, the total pressure energy of the straight outlet conduit decreases gradually. Under each condition, the difference of the energy proportion of the horizontal monitoring points of the straight outlet conduit is small, and the difference of the energy proportion of the two monitoring points at the top and bottom of the outlet channel is relatively large. The energy of the two monitoring points in the straight outlet conduit with a division pier is smaller than that of the two monitoring points in the straight outlet conduit without a division pier. There are differences in the main frequency and the power spectrum corresponding to the main frequency of the monitoring points in the straight outlet conduit, and the reasonable setting of the division pier is conducive to reducing the pressure pulsation of the flow in the straight outlet conduit and is beneficial to the safe and stable operation of the pump device.

Ship detection with polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) has gained extensive attention due to its widespread application in maritime surveillance. Nevertheless, designing identifiable features to realize accurate ship detection is still challenging. For this purpose, a fine eight-component model-based decomposition scheme is first presented by incorporating four advanced physical scattering models, thus accurately describing the dominant and local structure scattering of ships. Through analyzing the exclusive scattering mechanisms of ships, a discriminative ship detection feature is then constructed from the derived contributions of eight kinds of scattering components. Combined with a spatial information-based guard filter, the efficacy of the feature is further amplified and thus a ship detector is proposed which fulfills the final ship detection. Several qualitative and quantitative experiments are conducted on real PolSAR data and the results demonstrate that the proposed method reaches the highest figure-of-merit (FoM) factor of 0.96, which outperforms the comparative methods in ship detection.

This study was to investigate the relationship of serum mitochondrial coupling factor 6 (CF6) with blood lipid and glucose in patients with type 2 diabetic retinopathy. A total of 180 patients with type 2 diabetes enrolled in our hospital from January 2015 to September 2017 were selected as the research objects. They were divided in accordance with fundus fluorescence angiography (FFA) into normal diabetic retinopathy (NDR) group, background diabetic retinopathy (BDR) group as well as proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), with 60 cases in each group, and at the same time, another 60 healthy subjects were selected as normal control (NC) group. Serum CF6, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2 h postprandial plasma glucose (2hPG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol as well as triglyceride were measured in the groups and the relationship of serum CF6 with related indicators was analyzed. The level of serum CF6 in type 2 diabetes group was higher than that in NC group and there was statistically significant difference among the groups with the occurrence and aggravation of retinopathy ( P

Transmembrane proteins are mostly nanochannels playing a highly important role in metabolism. Understanding their structures and functions is vital for revealing life processes. It is of fundamental interest to develop chemical devices to mimic biological channels. Structural DNA nanotechnology has been proven to be a promising method for the preparation of fine DNA nanochannels as a result of the excellent properties of DNA molecules. This review presents the development history and current situation of three different types of DNA nanochannel: tile-based nanotube, DNA origami nanochannel, and DNA bundle nanochannel.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an important technique for wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things. Recently, considerable research has been performed in the combination of public key cryptography and RFID. In this paper, an efficient architecture of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) Processor for RFID tag chip is presented. We adopt a new inversion algorithm which requires fewer registers to store variables than the traditional schemes. A new method for coordinate swapping is proposed, which can reduce the complexity of the controller and shorten the time of iterative calculation effectively. A modified circular shift register architecture is presented in this paper, which is an effective way to reduce the area of register files. Clock gating and asynchronous counter are exploited to reduce the power consumption. The simulation and synthesis results show that the time needed for one elliptic curve scalar point multiplication over GF(2163) is 176.7 K clock cycles and the gate area is 13.8 K with UMC 0.13 μm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Moreover, the low power and low cost consumption make the Elliptic Curve Cryptography Processor (ECP) a prospective candidate for application in the RFID tag chip.

A RF powering circuit used in radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags and other batteryless embedded devices is presented in this paper. The RF powering circuit harvests energy from electromagnetic waves and converts the RF energy to a stable voltage source. Analysis of a NMOS gate-cross connected bridge rectifier is conducted to demonstrate relationship between device sizes and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the rectifier. A rectifier with 38.54% PCE under normal working conditions is designed. Moreover, a stable voltage regulator with a temperature and voltage optimizing strategy including adoption of a combination resistor is developed, which is able to accommodate a large input range of 4 V to 12 V and be immune to temperature variations. Latch-up prevention and noise isolation methods in layout design are also presented. Designed with the HJTC 0.25 μm process, this regulator achieves 0.04 mV/°C temperature rejection ratio (TRR) and 2.5 mV/V voltage rejection ratio (VRR). The RF powering circuit is also fabricated in the HJTC 0.25 μm process. The area of the RF powering circuit is 0.23 × 0.24 mm2. The RF powering circuit is successfully integrated with ISO/IEC 15693-compatible and ISO/IEC 14443-compatible RFID tag chips.

The host immune response plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori infection. The aim of this study was to clarify the immune pathogenic mechanism of Helicobacter pylori infection via TLR signaling and gastric mucosal Treg cells in mice. To discover the underlying mechanism, we selectively blocked the TLR signaling pathway and subpopulations of regulatory T cells in the gastric mucosa of mice, and examined the consequences on H. pylori infection and inflammatory response as measured by MyD88, NF-κB p65, and Foxp3 protein expression levels and the levels of Th1, Th17 and Th2 cytokines in the gastric mucosa. We determined that blocking TLR4 signaling in H. pylori infected mice decreased the numbers of Th1 and Th17 Treg cells compared to controls (P < 0.001-0.05), depressed the immune response as measured by inflammatory grade (P < 0.05), and enhanced H. pylori colonization (P < 0.05). In contrast, blocking CD25 had the opposite effects, wherein the Th1 and Th17 cell numbers were increased (P < 0.001-0.05), immune response was enhanced (P < 0.05), and H. pylori colonization was inhibited (P < 0.05) compared to the non-blocked group. In both blocked groups, the Th2 cytokine IL-4 remained unchanged, although IL-10 in the CD25 blocked group was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Furthermore, MyD88, NF-κB p65, and Foxp3 in the non-blocked group were significantly lower than those in the TLR4 blocked group (P < 0.05), but significantly higher than those of the CD25 blocked group (P < 0.05). Together, these results suggest that there might be an interaction between TLR signaling and Treg cells that is important for limiting H. pylori colonization and suppressing the inflammatory response of infected mice.

In the milling process, cutting forces contain key information about the machining process status in terms of workpiece quality and tool condition. On-line cutting force measurement is key for machining condition monitoring and machined surface quality assurance. This paper presents a novel instrumented working table with integrated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thin-film sensors, thus enabling the dynamic milling force measurement with compact structures. To achieve this, PVDF thin-film sensors are integrated into the working table to sense forces in different directions and the dedicated cutting force decoupling model is derived. A prototype instrumented working table is developed and validated. The validation demonstrates that profiles of the forces measured from the developed instrumented working table prototype and the dynamometer match well. Furthermore, the milling experiment results convey that the instrumented working table prototype could also identify the tool runout due to tool manufacturing or assembly errors, and the force signal spectrum analysis indicates that the developed working table can capture the tool passing frequency correctly, therefore, is suitable for the milling force measurement.

Software-defined radio (SDR) is a good solution for complying with the existing and incoming protocols for emerging wireless sensor networks (WSN) and internet of things (IoT) applications. The frequency synthesizer in a SDR tranceiver usually consists of a phase locked loop (PLL) and a post synthesizer. The PLL is the narrow band signal source and the post synthesizer generates wideband outputs by mixing and dividing. Compared with a frequency synthesizer utilizing the wideband PLL, this synthesizer features relatively constant loop parameters and mitigates the requirement for the oscillator. In this paper, a quadrature single side-band (QSSB) mixer with the proposed passive negative resistance (PNR) for frequency mixing in a post synthesizer is presented. The PNR is achieved by biasing the Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFET) of the cross-coupled pair at the deep-triode region periodically and incorporates an inductor and a cap-array as the mixer load. Compared with the traditional single side-band mixers utilizing Inductor-Capacitor (LC) resonant loads or quality factor enhanced (Q-enhanced) LC resonant loads, which suffer from a selectivity versus working range trade-off, the mixer employing the proposed loading structure provides not only a wide operating range, but also a superior image side-band rejection ratio (ISRR). Moreover, the oscillating risk in conventional mixers adopting Q-enhanced LC resonant loads is eliminated. A wideband frequency synthesizer employing the proposed mixer was implemented in a TSMC 0.18 µm CMOS process and the mixer performed ISRR of 40–57 dB and 30–57 dB across 2.5–3 GHz and 2.3–3.2 GHz, respectively. The power consumption of the QSSB mixer, including buffer, is 18 mA from a 1.8 V supply and the active area is 0.445 mm2. The measurement results provide validation that the proposed QSSB mixer is suitable for wideband software-defined frequency synthesizers and other frequency generating systems.

The traditional analytical cutting force prediction method for ball-end milling ignores the effect of the inclination angle on cutting forces. In this paper, a new experimental method for cutting force prediction methods considering the inclination angle in the ball-end milling process is proposed. First, the actual immersion ranges of cutter in the ball-end milling process with and without an inclination angle are analyzed by a geometrical method and the cutting force prediction model with an inclination angle is developed by a numerical integration method. Second, considering that entry and exit angles of cutting zones for different cutter layers vary due to the inclination angle, a milling force coefficients identification approach for different cutter layers is established by experimental calibration. Comparing the traditional analytical cutting force prediction method that ignores the inclination angle, the numerical simulation results show that the prediction force values calculated by the proposed method have a better consistency with the measured values.

A low-power, low-phase-noise quadrature oscillator for Medical Implantable Communications Service (MICS) transceivers is presented. The proposed quadrature oscillator generates 349~689 MHz I/Q (In-phase and Quadrature) signals covering the MICS band. The oscillator is based on a differential pair with positive feedback. Each delay cell consists of a few transistors enabling lower voltage operation. Since the oscillator is very sensitive to disturbances in the supply voltage and ground, a self-bias circuit for isolating the voltage disturbance is proposed to achieve bias voltages which can track the disturbances from the supply and ground. The oscillation frequency, which is controlled by the bias voltages, is less sensitive to the supply and ground noise, and a low phase noise is achieved. The chip is fabricated in the UMC (United Microelectronics Corporation) 0.18 μm CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) process; the core just occupies a 28.5 × 22 μm2 area. The measured phase noise is −108.45 dBc/Hz at a 1 MHz offset with a center frequency of 540 MHz. The gain of the oscillator is 0.309 MHz/mV with a control voltage from 0 V to 1.1 V. The circuit can work with a supply voltage as low as 1.2 V and the power consumption is only 0.46 mW at a 1.8 V supply voltage.

In this article, we synthesized a type of DNA amphiphiles (called DNA-lipids) and systematically studied its assembly behavior at the liquid crystal (LC)—aqueous interface. It turned out that the pure DNA-lipids at various concentrations cannot trigger the optical transition of liquid crystals from planar anchoring to homeotropic anchoring at the liquid crystal—aqueous interface. The co-assembly of DNA-lipid and l-dilauroyl phosphatidylcholine (l-DLPC) indicated that the DLPC assembled all over the LC-aqueous interface, and DNA-lipids prefer to couple with LC in certain areas, particularly in polarized and fluorescent image, forming micron sized net-like structures. The addition of DNA complementary to DNA-lipids forming double stranded DNA-lipids caused de-assembly of DNA-lipids from LC-aqueous interface, resulting in the disappearance of net-like structures, which can be visualized through polarized microscope. The optical changes combined with DNA unique designable property and specific interaction with wide range of target molecules, the DNA-lipids decorated LC-aqueous interface would provide a new platform for biological sensing and diagnosis.

Thin-walled workpieces, such as aero-engine blisks and casings, are usually made of hard-to-cut materials. The wall thickness is very small and it is easy to deflect during milling process under dynamic cutting forces, leading to inaccurate workpiece dimensions and poor surface integrity. To understand the workpiece deflection behavior in a machining process, a new real-time nonintrusive method for deflection monitoring is presented, and a detailed analysis of workpiece deflection for different machining stages of the whole machining process is discussed. The thin-film polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensor is attached to the non-machining surface of the workpiece to copy the deflection excited by the dynamic cutting force. The relationship between the input deflection and the output voltage of the monitoring system is calibrated by testing. Monitored workpiece deflection results show that the workpiece experiences obvious vibration during the cutter entering the workpiece stage, and vibration during the machining process can be easily tracked by monitoring the deflection of the workpiece. During the cutter exiting the workpiece stage, the workpiece experiences forced vibration firstly, and free vibration exists until the amplitude reduces to zero after the cutter exits the workpiece. Machining results confirmed the suitability of the deflection monitoring system for machining thin-walled workpieces with the application of PVDF sensors.
