InAs/AlSb is a material system that can be used as a low-noise avalanche detector and operates in the short-wave infrared band. The interface parameters determine the wave function overlap (WFO). Maximizing the WFO of InAs/AlSb superlattices improves the quantum efficiency (QE) of infrared avalanche photodetectors (APDs). However, this remains a huge challenge. Here, the 8-band k·p perturbation method based on Bloch wave envelope function approximation was used to calculate the energy level structure of InAs/AlSb superlattices. The results indicate that the WFO is enhanced with increasing InSb interface thickness or when the InSb (or AlAs) interface is far from the intersection of InAs and AlSb. As the AlAs interface thickness increases, the WFO enhances and then reduces. The maximum increase in WFO is 15.7%, 93%, and 156.8%, respectively, with three different models. Based on the stress equilibrium condition, we consider the interface engineering scheme proposed for enhancing WFO with an increase of 16%, 114%, and 159.5%, respectively. Moreover, the absorption wavelength shift is less than ±0.1 μm. Therefore, the interface layer thickness and position can be designed to enhance the WFO without sacrificing other properties, thereby improving the QE of the device. It provides a new idea for the material epitaxy of APDs.

Background and purposeSarcopenia is highly prevalent (28.5–40.3%) in patients undergoing hemodialysis and leads to poor clinical outcomes. However, the association between muscle quality and sarcopenia in patients receiving hemodialysis remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore the association between muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and proton-density fat-fraction (PDFF) in patients with sarcopenia undergoing hemodialysis.MethodsSeventy-six patients undergoing hemodialysis for > 3 months were enrolled. Their handgrip strength (HGS), short physical performance battery (SPPB) performance, and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) were measured. Sarcopenia was defined using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 consensus update. All patients underwent quantitative magnetic resonance imaging. CSA and PDFF were measured for the thigh, trunk, and gluteus muscles.ResultsThe prevalence of probable, confirmed, and severe sarcopenia in this study was 73.7%, 51.3%, and 22.4%, respectively. Older age (OR: 1.061, P < 0.003); lower body mass index (BMI) (OR: 0.837, P = 0.008), albumin (OR: 0.765, P = 0.004), prealbumin (OR: 0.987, P = 0.001), predialysis blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (OR: 0.842, P < 0.001), predialysis creatinine (OR: 0.993, P < 0.001), phosphorus (OR: 0.396, P = 0.047); lower CSA of the thigh (OR: 0.58, P = 0.035), third lumbar (L3) trunk (OR: 0.37, P = 0.004), gluteus minimus and medius (OR: 0.28, P = 0.001), and gluteus maximus (OR: 0.28, P= 0.001); and higher PDFF of the thigh (OR: 1.89, P = 0.036) and L3 trunk (OR: 1.71, P = 0.040) were identified as sarcopenia risk factors. The gluteus minimus and medius CSA was lower in patients with sarcopenia than in those without after adjusting for age and BMI (OR: 0.37, P = 0.017). Higher thigh (P = 0.031) and L3 trunk (P = 0.006) muscle PDFF were significantly associated with lower HGS. Furthermore, higher thigh (P = 0.011) and L3 trunk (P = 0.010) muscle PDFF were also inversely correlated with lower ASMI.ConclusionOur findings demonstrate the high prevalence of sarcopenia and myosteatosis in patients undergoing hemodialysis and might trigger a paradigm shift in intervention strategies for patients receiving hemodialysis.

Abstract In order to calculate the dynamic distribution of rail potential and stray current accurately, a multi‐state unified calculation model of rail potential and stray current is proposed, and the characteristics of different protection devices and reflux system in multi‐state DC railway systems are analysed. In the proposed model, the multi‐state characteristics of the traction substation, train, protection devices and reflux system are uniformly simulated by unified node models. The mixed simulation parameters of the catenary and reflux system are unified to lumped parameter networks, and the multi‐node voltage equations are established based on the simulation model. Then, the power flow of DC railway systems is calculated using an iterative solution, and the dynamic distribution of rail potential and stray current are solved by differential equations. The multi‐state unified calculation model is built and the distribution of rail potential and stray current in different conditions are simulated based on the parameters of Wuxi Subway Line 2. In order to verify the multi‐state unified calculation model proposed, field tests and simulations are carried out. Results show that the multi‐state unified calculation model can unify the complex states of DC railway systems and calculate the distribution of rail potential and stray current accurately.

Sulfonamide antibiotics in the environment not only disrupt the ecological balance but can also enter the human or animal body in various forms and cause harm. Therefore, exploring efficient methods to degrade sulfonamide antibiotics is crucial. In this study, we prepared biochar (BC) using corn straw, and TiO2/BC was obtained by doping different proportions of TiO2 into biochar with varying carbonization temperatures using the sol–gel method. Next, we investigated the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in solution using the generated TiO2/BC under ultraviolet irradiation and studied the effects of various experimental parameters, such as the type of composite material, composite material addition, solution pH, and initial antibiotic concentration on SMX degradation. Under an initial SMX concentration of 30 mg/L, the composite with the best photocatalytic degradation performance was TiO2/BC-5-300 (i.e., 5 mL of TiO2 doping; 300 °C calcination temperature), with an addition amount of 0.02 g and a solution pH of 3. The degradation efficiency increased from 22.3% to 89%, and the most significant degradation effect occurred during the initial stage of photocatalytic degradation. In the TiO2/BC-5-300 treated SMX solution, the average rhizome length of bean sprouts was significantly higher than that of the untreated SMX solution and slightly lower than that of the deionized aqueous solution (3.05 cm < 3.85 cm < 4.05 cm). This confirmed that the photocatalytic degradation of SMX by the composite was effective and could efficiently reduce its impact on the growth of bean sprouts. This study provides essential data and theoretical support for using TiO2/BC in the treatment of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater.

Bacillus anthracis has gained international attention as a deadly bacterium and a potentially deadly biological warfare agent. Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is the main component of the protective layer of anthracis spores, and is also an anthrax biomarker. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore an efficient and sensitive DPA detection method. Herein, a novel ratio hybrid probe (CQDs-PIL-Eu3+) was prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method using carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as an internal reference fluorescence and a covalent bond between CQDs and Eu3+ by using a polyionic liquid (PIL) as a bridge molecule. The ratiometric fluorescence probe was found to have the characteristics of sensitive fluorescence visual sensing in detecting DPA. The structure and the sensing properties of CQDs-PIL-Eu3+ were investigated in detail. In particular, the fluorescence intensity ratio of Eu3+ to CQDs (I616/I440) was linear with the concentration of DPA in the range of 0–50 μM, so the detection limit of the probe was as low as 32 nm, which was far lower than the DPA dose released by the number of anthrax spores in human body (60 μM) and, thus, can achieve sensitive detection. Therefore, the ratiometric fluorescence probe in this work has the characteristics of strong anti-interference, visual sensing, and high sensitivity, which provides a very promising scheme for the realization of anthrax biomarker DPA detection.

Abstract Background and aims Renal fibrosis is the common outcome in all progressive forms of chronic kidney disease. Unfortunately, the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis remains largely unexplored, among which metabolic reprogramming plays an extremely crucial role in the evolution of renal fibrosis. Ceria nanoparticles (CeNP-PEG) with strong ROS scavenging and anti-inflammatory activities have been applied for mitochondrial oxidative stress and inflammatory diseases. The present study aims to determine whether CeNP-PEG has therapeutic value for renal fibrosis. Methods The unilateral ureteral obstructive fibrosis model was used to assess the therapeutic effects in vivo. Transforming growth factor beta1-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in HK-2 cells was used as the in vitro cell model. The seahorse bioscience X96 extracellular flux analyzer was used to measure the oxygen consumption rate and extracellular acidification rate. Results In the present study, CeNP-PEG treatment significantly ameliorated renal fibrosis by increased E-cadherin protein expression, and decreased α-SMA, Vimentin and Fibronectin expression both in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, CeNP-PEG significantly reduced the ROS formation and improved the levels of mitochondrial ATP. The seahorse analyzer assay demonstrated that the extracellular acidification rate markedly decreased, whereas the oxygen consumption rate markedly increased, in the presence of CeNP-PEG. Furthermore, the mitochondrial membrane potential markedly enhanced, hexokinase 1 and hexokinase 2 expression significantly decreased after treatment with CeNP-PEG. Conclusions CeNP-PEG can block the dysregulated metabolic status and exert protective function on renal fibrosis. This may provide another therapeutic option for renal fibrosis. Graphical Abstract

The interferon (IFN) response is the first line of defense against viral invasion and thus plays a central role in the regulation of the immune response. IFN-epsilon (IFN-ε) is a newly discovered type I IFN that does not require viral induction, unlike other type I IFNs. IFN-ε is constitutively expressed in epithelial cells and plays an important role in mucosal immunity. In this study, we evaluated the biological activity of the mink-IFN (MiIFN)-ε gene in prokaryotic cells. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to evaluate IFN-ε expression in different mink tissues. MiIFN-ε was highly expressed in brain, lung, tracheal, kidney, intestinal, bladder, ovarian, and testis tissues. There was no significant difference in MiIFN-ε expression between female and male minks, except in the reproductive system. Expression of the small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO3)-MiIFN-ε fusion gene was induced by isopropylβ-d-thiogalactoside, and MiIFN-ε was collected after SUMO-specific protease digestion. We tested the antiviral activity of MiIFN-ε against vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) in epithelial cells of feline kidney 81 (F81). We used qRT-PCR to analyze the expression of several IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs), including ISG15, 2′-5′ oligoadenylate synthetase (2′-5′OAS1), and myxovirus resistance protein 1 (Mx1). Recombinant IFN-ε induced high ISG expression in F81 cells. Compared with those in the cell control group, expressions of ISG15, Mx1, and 2′-5′ OAS1 in the VSV-GFP control, IFN-ε, and MiIFN-ε-inhibited VSV-GFP groups were significantly increased. Compared with those in the VSV-GFP control group, expressions of ISG15 and 2′-5′ OAS1 in the IFN-ε and MiIFN-ε-inhibited VSV-GFP groups were significantly increased, and the differences were highly significant (p < 0.0001). IFN-ε played an indirect antiviral role. These findings lay the foundation for detailed investigation of IFN-ε in the future.

Abstract Obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, contributing to an increasing prevalence of chronic metabolic diseases, such as insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD), and steatohepatitis. Macrophages are the predominant immune cells in adipose tissues. Adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) would switch to pro-inflammatory M1 state during obesity, causing local and systemic inflammation. However, the regulatory mechanism of ATMs has not yet been well described within this process. Using a high-fat diet (HFD)–induced mouse obesity model, we found that the costimulatory molecule CD226 was highly expressed on ATMs and knockout (KO) of CD226 alleviated obesity caused by HFD. Loss of CD226 reduced the accumulation of ATMs and hindered macrophage M1 polarization, with lower serum proinflammatory cytokine levels. Furthermore, deficiency of CD226 on ATMs decreased the phosphorylation levels of VAV1, AKT, and FOXO1 and thereby upregulated PPAR-γ. Further administration of PPAR-γ inhibitor restored M1 phenotype in CD226KO ATMs. In summary, loss of CD226 alleviates the HFD-induced obesity and systemic inflammation through inhibition of the accumulation and M1 polarization of ATMs in which PPAR-γ-dependent signaling pathway is involved, suggesting that CD226 may be identified as a potential molecular target for the clinical treatment of obesity.

In order to improve the quality of outlet temperature of DSG trough solar collector, the classical multi-objective optimization method is used to optimize the parameters of PID controller. In the optimization process, two kinds of objective functions are designed, one kind is the direct objective functions, the other kind is the indirect functions. The simulation curves of the parameters obtained by the multi-objective optimization method are much better than those of the original literature in the adjustment time and other indicators. In addition, the control valve position changes are within the allowable range, and the control system also has a certain robustness. Finally, the solution time of indirect objective function is about 1/6 of that of direct objective function, and there is no need to determine the ideal value of control index. Therefore, it is reasonable and effective to use multi-objective optimization algorithm and indirect objective function to optimize the parameters of PID controller for the outlet temperature of trough solar collector.

Microbial infection, caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasites, significantly contributes to the global death burden and health costs. The innate and adaptive immune systems orchestrate a multifaceted signaling response to invading pathogens as the human antimicrobial system. In this process, caspase recruitment domain-containing protein 9 (CARD9) emerges as a critical intermediary adaptor molecule to participate in regulating a series of antimicrobial immune reactions. Previous publications have confirmed that CARD9 plays a crucial role in fungal, bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. In this study, we aim to provide an update on the recent clinical and basic studies where the mechanism and function of CARD9 have been further studied and understood. In addition, we summarize the latest treatment and prevention strategies based on CARD9 and discuss the current perspectives and future direction of CARD9.

Abstract A wideband mono‐cone antenna is proposed. Evolution from a top‐loaded mono‐cone, the top plate is etched by two rings and loaded by an array of resistors and inductors. This design improves impedance matching properties in the low frequency range while maintaining a compact size. An equivalent circuit modal is built for assisting the antenna design. A prototype is fabricated and measured for verification. The antenna operates in the frequency band of 118–1100 MHz with |S11|≤‐10 dB and the fluctuation of omni‐directional radiation pattern ≤ 2.5 dB. The occupied area of the antenna is 0.24 λL × 0.24 λL × 0.06 λL, which is attractive for use on aircraft.

PurposeTo systematically assess the multiparametric MRI clear cell likelihood score (ccLS) algorithm for the classification of small renal masses (SRM).MethodsWe conducted an electronic literature search on Web of Science, MEDLINE (Ovid and PubMed), Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Google Scholar to identify relevant articles from 2017 up to June 30, 2022. We included studies reporting the diagnostic performance of the ccLS for characterization of solid SRM. The bivariate model and hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic (HSROC) model were used to pool sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (LR+), negative likelihood ratio (LR−), and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR). The quality evaluation was performed with the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 tool.ResultsA total of 6 studies with 825 renal masses (785 patients) were included in the current meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity and specificity for cT1a renal masses were 0.80 (95% CI 0.75–0.85) and 0.74 (95% CI 0.65–0.81) at the threshold of ccLS ≥4, the pooled LR+, LR−, and DOR were 3.04 (95% CI 2.34-3.95), 0.27 (95% CI 0.22–0.33), and 11.4 (95% CI 8.2-15.9), respectively. The area under the HSROC curve was 0.84 (95% CI 0.81–0.87). For all cT1 renal masses, the pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.80 (95% CI 0.74–0.85) and 0.76 (95% CI 0.67–0.83).ConclusionsThe ccLS had moderate to high accuracy for identifying ccRCC from other RCC subtypes and with a moderate inter-reader agreement. However, its diagnostic performance remain needs multi-center, large cohort studies to validate in the future.

Many viruses can cause infections in mink, including canine distemper virus, mink enteritis virus, and Aleutian disease virus. Current treatments are ineffective, and these infections are often fatal, causing severe economic losses. As antiviral drugs may effectively prevent and control these infections, recent research has increasingly focused on antiviral interferons. Herein, the gene encoding a mature mink interferon alpha (MiIFN-α) was synthesized according to the P. pastoris preference of codon usage and a recombinant plasmid, pPICZαA-MiIFN-α, was constructed. pPICZαA-MiIFN-α was linearized and transformed into the P. pastoris X33 strain, and zeocin-resistant transformants were selected. Protein expression was induced by methanol. SDS-PAGE and western blot analyses showed that a 25-kDa fusion protein was expressed in the culture supernatant. Antiviral activity of the expressed protein was determined using cytopathic effect inhibition (CPEI). The purified MiIFN-α significantly inhibited the cytopathic effect of vesicular stomatitis virus with a green fluorescent protein (VSV-GFP) in F81 feline kidney cells, with an antiviral activity of 6.4 × 107 IU/mL; it also significantly inhibited MEV replication in F81 cells. MiIFN-α antiviral activity against VSV-GFP was significantly reduced on treatment with pH 4 and pH 10 conditions for 24 h (p < 0.01). Serum MiIFN-α concentrations in rat were measured using enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay; MiIFN-α concentrations in rat serum peaked at ~36 h after injection. A high dose of MiIFN-α was safe for use. There were no significant differences in body temperature, tissue changes, and lymphocyte, total white blood cell, and central granulocyte counts between the injected and control groups (p > 0.05). These findings lay a foundation for the large-scale production of recombinant MiIFNs.

When used for ornamental purposes, the herbaceous peony is usually propagated by root ramets, but the replanting of divided seedlings in the original planting area results in poor growth and development. No research has reported on a compound microbial agent used for herbaceous peony. The purpose of this experiment is to provide a reference for low–cost soil improvement in production, promote the growth and development of herbaceous peony, and solve the problem of planting back obstacles. In this study, 3–year–old seedlings of herbaceous peony ‘Zifengyu’ were selected and planted into an ordinary garden and replanted soils. Four root irrigation treatments were conducted using the compound microbial agent ‘Junzhongjun’ to determine the physicochemical properties of rhizosphere soil, root physiology, and growth and development of ‘Zifengyu’ under different soil conditions. The growth and development of the aboveground parts of herbaceous peony were promoted by the treatment of the compound microbial agent in the following order: garden soil > sieved–root soil > unsieved–root soil. Root vigour was enhanced in the following sequence: sieved–root soil > unsieved–root soil > garden soil. The organic matter and available potassium in the rhizosphere soil of herbaceous peony increased, and the promotional effect in the sieved–root soil was significantly better than that in the other two soils. The results show that the compound microbial agent is low in cost and has a stimulating effect on the growth and development of herbaceous peony. In the process of production, the residual broken roots in the soil can be sieved and combined with the application of the compound microbial agent to further alleviate the barriers of replanting. The concentration and frequency of agent application should be further optimized at a later stage.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is vital for ensuring the service safety of aging bridges. As one of the most advanced sensing techniques, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) could capture massive spatiotemporal information for effective bridge structural health monitoring (BSHM). Unfortunately, GNSS measurements often contain outliers due to various factors (e.g., severe weather conditions, multipath effects, etc.). All such outliers could jeopardize the accuracy and reliability of BSHM significantly. Previous studies have examined the feasibility of integrating the conventional multi-rate Kalman filter (MKF) with an adaptive algorithm in the data processing processes to ensure BSHM accuracy. However, frequent parameter adjustments are still needed in tedious data processing processes. This study proposed an outlier detection method using a Nelder-Mead simplex robust multi-rate Kalman filter (RMKF) for supporting trustworthy BSHM using GNSS and accelerometer. In the end, the authors have validated the proposed method using the monitoring data collected at the Wilford Bridge in the UK. Results showed that the accuracy of the total dynamic vibration displacement time series has been improved by 21% compared with the results using the conventional MKF approach. The authors envision that the proposed method will shed light on reliable and explainable data processing policy and trustworthy BSHM.

Background: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is pandemic. However, data concerning the epidemiological features, viral shedding, and antibody dynamics between asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carriers and COVID-19 patients remain controversial. Methods: We enrolled 193 SARS-CoV-2 infected subjects in Ningbo and Zhoushan, Zhejiang, China, from January 21 to March 6, 2020. All subjects were followed up to monitor the dynamics of serum antibody immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG against SARS-CoV-2 using colloidal gold-labeled and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Results: Of those, 31 were asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carriers, 148 symptomatic COVID-19 patients, and 14 presymptomatic COVID-19 patients. Compared to symptomatic COVID-19 patients, asymptomatic carriers were younger and had higher levels of white blood cell and lymphocyte, lower level of C-reactive protein, and shorter viral shedding duration. Conversion of IgM from positive to negative was shorter in asymptomatic carriers than in COVID-19 patients (7.5 vs. 25.5 days, P = 0.030). The proportion of those persistently seropositive for IgG against SARS-CoV-2 was higher in COVID-19 patients than in asymptomatic carriers (66.1% vs. 33.3%, P = 0.037). Viral load was higher in symptomatic patients than presymptomatic patients (P = 0.003) and asymptomatic carriers (P = 0.004). Viral shedding duration was longer in presymptomatic COVID-19 patients than in asymptomatic carriers (48.0 vs. 24.0 days, P = 0.002). Asymptomatic carriers acquired infection more from intra-familial transmission than did COVID-19 patients (89.0% vs. 61.0%, P = 0.028). In 4 familial clusters of SARS-CoV-2 infection, asymptomatic carriers were mainly children and young adults while severe COVID-19 was mainly found in family members older than 60 years with comorbidities. Conclusion: Asymptomatic carriers might have a higher antiviral immunity to clear SARS-CoV-2 than symptomatic COVID-19 patients and this antiviral immunity should be contributable to innate and adaptive cellular immunity rather than humoral immunity. The severity of COVID-19 is associated with older age and comorbidities in familial clustering cases.

Abstract A novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has spread worldwide and led to high disease burden around the world. This study aimed to explore the key parameters of SARS-CoV-2 infection and to assess the effectiveness of interventions to control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A susceptible—exposed—infectious—asymptomatic—recovered (SEIAR) model was developed for the assessment. The information of each confirmed case and asymptomatic infection was collected from Ningbo Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to calculate the key parameters of the model in Ningbo City, China. A total of 157 confirmed COVID-19 cases (including 51 imported cases and 106 secondary cases) and 30 asymptomatic infections were reported in Ningbo City. The proportion of asymptomatic infections had an increasing trend. The proportion of elder people in the asymptomatic infections was lower than younger people, and the difference was statistically significant (Fisher’s Exact Test, P = 0.034). There were 22 clusters associated with 167 SARS-CoV-2 infections, among which 29 cases were asymptomatic infections, accounting for 17.37%. We found that the secondary attack rate (SAR) of asymptomatic infections was almost the same as that of symptomatic cases, and no statistical significance was observed (χ 2 = 0.052, P = 0.819) by Kruskal–Wallis test. The effective reproduction number (R eff ) was 1.43, which revealed that the transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 was moderate. If the interventions had not been strengthened, the duration of the outbreak would have lasted about 16 months with a simulated attack rate of 44.15%. The total attack rate (TAR) and duration of the outbreak would increase along with the increasing delay of intervention. SARS-CoV-2 had moderate transmissibility in Ningbo City, China. The proportion of asymptomatic infections had an increase trend. Asymptomatic infections had the same transmissibility as symptomatic infections. The integrated interventions were implemented at different stages during the outbreak, which turned out to be exceedingly effective in China.

Abstract Background Human epithelial cell sheets (ECSs) are used to clinically treat epithelial conditions such as burns, corneal blindness, middle ear cholesteatoma and vitiligo. As a widely used material in clinic, there is little information on the biobanking of ECSs and its repair effect after storage. Results Two methods for biobanking foreskin ECSs were compared in a short term (7 days): 4-degree storage and programmed cryopreservation. Cell sheet integrity, viability, apoptosis, immunogenicity, mechanical properties and function were evaluated. In vivo, ECSs were directly transplanted to skin defect models and histological examination was performed at 1 week postoperatively. We successfully extracted human foreskin-derived primary epithelial cells and fabricated them into ECSs. Compared with 4-degree storage, programmed cryopreservation preserved the ECS structural integrity, enhanced the mechanical properties, decreased HLA-I expression, and increased cell viability and survival. An increased proportion of melanocytes with proliferative capacity remained in the cryopreserved sheets, and the undifferentiated epithelial cells were comparable to those of the fresh sheets. In vivo, cryopreserved ECSs could reduce inflammatory cell infiltration and promote connective tissue remodeling, epithelial cell proliferation and vascular regeneration. Conclusions Programmed cryopreservation of ECSs was superior and more feasible than 4-degree storage and the cryopreserved ECSs achieved satisfying skin wound healing in vivo. We anticipate that the off-the-shelf ECSs could be quickly used, such as, to repair human epithelial defect in future. Graphical abstract

In the context of the ubiquitous power Internet of Things (UPIoT), this paper attempts to make full use of distributed new energy, and rationalize the energy management strategy of households. Inspired by the energy management system (EMS) of intelligent buildings, the authors searched for the optimal control plan for energy based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm. Under the overall architecture of the system, a distributed new energy generation system was modelled for consumers in intelligent buildings, including energy storage, household electrical loads, new energy vehicles, etc. Next, a Q-learning-based energy management model was established for intelligent buildings, and the corresponding constraints were set up. After that, the reward and penalty functions of the EMSs for households and the intelligent building were designed based on the daily economic dispatch (DED) model. Finally, the energy management strategy was optimized, creating the real-time optimization control process. The proposed energy management strategy was proved effective for intelligent buildings through simulations. The research results provide a reference for energy management in other microgrids.

Herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is a famous ornamental plant, and the study of its flower color is of great significance for cultivating new flower varieties. To explore the factors driving the formation and change of herbaceous peony flower color, we selected five herbaceous peony varieties at four flowering stages to determine the change in flower color, petal area, and microstructure. We also examined the composition and content of petal pigments, soluble sugar and soluble protein content, pH value of cell fluid, and water content. Finally, we analyzed the correlations between each factor. We found that Pn3G5G, Pg3G5G, and Cy3G5G were the main anthocyanin components in red and purple petals. Qu3G, Qu7G, Is3G, and lutein play important roles in yellow petal formation. The change in herbaceous peony flower color during the flowering process is directly caused by changes in the anthocyanin and carotenoid content in petals. In addition, changes in other physiological indices also influence the change in flower color. This study explored the physiological and biochemical factors affecting the color of herbaceous peony petals, which has an important practical significance for studying the physiological mechanism of herbaceous peony flower color formation and color breeding of new flowers.

Phosphoric acid-based porous geopolymers were prepared by two different foaming agents (H2O2 and Al powder) with phosphoric acid as the activator. High-magnesium nickel slag (HMNS) and fly ash (FA) were the precursor combination. The effects of foaming agent types and contents on the properties of HMNS-FA-phosphate-based porous geopolymers were investigated in terms of dry density, pore structure, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, and water absorption. The phase was analyzed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). It was found that both foaming agents could successfully prepare porous geopolymers, and the compressive strength and dry density of porous geopolymers gradually decreased and the low-thermal conductivity and water absorption gradually increased with the increase in foaming agent content. The foaming agents formed porous structures inside porous geopolymers but did not affect the phases of geopolymerization reactions. This study demonstrates that both foaming agents can be used to prepare HMNS-FA-phosphate-based porous geopolymers for the application of phosphate-activated geopolymers in the direction of refractory materials.

Type-II superlattices (T2SLs) are emerging as next-generation materials for infrared detectors. The epitaxial quality of T2SLs is of great importance to the performance of infrared detectors such as dark current and detectivity. Herein, we explore the effect of the native GaSb oxide layer on the surface morphology and crystal quality of InAs/GaSb T2SLs grown with molecular beam epitaxy. The experimental results demonstrate that the thickness of the oxidation layer on GaSb substrates gradually increases over time and is saturated at around 73 Å in the natural oxidation condition. Moreover, the oxidation process is sensitive to humidity. As the thickness of the GaSb oxide layer increases from 18.79 Å to 61.54 Å, the full width at half maximum of the first satellite peak increases from 38.44 to 61.34 arcsec in X-ray diffraction measurements, and the root mean square roughness increases from 0.116 nm to 0.171 nm in atomic force microscopy measurements. Our results suggest that the thickness of the GaSb oxide layer should be less than 55 Å to obtain smooth buffer layers and qualified superlattices. The work provides an optimized direction for achieving high-quality superlattices for infrared optoelectronic devices.

The herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.), a perennial herbaceous flower, can grows continuously for approximately 10 years. However, a replanting problem can occur during division propagation which reduces the land use rate and restricts the development of the herbaceous peony industry. We investigated microbial community changes and soil chemical properties in herbaceous peony soils during different growing and replanting years. The results indicated that the flowering rate, plant height, stem diameter, and leaf area of replanted herbaceous peony were lower, and decreased gradually with increasing replanting years. Compared with the soil after replanting herbaceous peony for one year, soil pH, nutrient contents (AN, AP, AK, and OM), enzyme activities (Inv, Ure, Pho, and Cat), diversity and richness of fungal and bacterial communities decreased after replanting for five years. Long-term replanting increased the relative abundance of harmful soil microorganisms (e.g., Gibberella), and reduced that of beneficial microorganisms (e.g., Bacillus). Overall, after the long-term replanting of herbaceous peony, the soil environment deteriorated, and the soil microbial community structure changed, resulting in the imbalance of soil microecology, damaging the normal growth of herbaceous peony.

Apparent viscosity is an important parameter for glucose syrup production, which is greatly affected by particle size and concentration of samples. In order to analyze the factors influencing the apparent viscosity, the particle size distribution, steady shear flow behavior, temperature, and time sweep test of native degerminated maize grits (NDMG), extruded degerminated maize grits (EDMG), and enzymatically extruded degerminated maize grits (EEDMG) with different particle sizes (passed through 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mesh sieves) and concentrations (water-sample ratios: 2:1, 3:1, 5:1, 10:1, and 20:1) were investigated. All samples passed through different mesh sieves showed a gradient and a relatively concentrated distribution, and slurries had typical shear-thinning properties. Apparent viscosity increased with increasing particle size and concentration. The lowest apparent viscosity was attained from the samples obtained at 100+ mesh and 20:1 water-sample ratio. Moreover, the sample with a 20:1 water-sample ratio showed the most stable apparent viscosity in the temperature sweep test. In the time sweep test, the power law equation with high determination coefficients (7-2=0.9446, 0.9382) and low root mean square error (RMSE=0.0002) had the best fit to the experimental data of the EDMG and EEDMG samples passed through 100+ mesh. Overall, the lower apparent viscosities of the EDMG and EEDMG samples obtained at 100+ mesh and 20:1 watersample ratio can improve the activity and accessibility of enzymes for glucose syrup production. During last two decades, transition-metal catalyzed asymmetric reactions under continuous flow system have attracted a widespread attention. With its prominent advantages including higher safety and efficiency, precise control, better heat/mass transfer, easier scale-up and better sustainability, it has impressed both the academia and related industries. However, comparing with the prosperous development of transition-metal catalyzed asymmetric reactions in batch, utilization of this type of chemistry under continuous flow is still at an early stage. To inspire more potential industrial application and further studies of this chemistry in flow, this review summarized the recent advances of transition-metal catalyzed asymmetric reactions under continuous flow. Moreover, we further discussed the encountered challenges including reactor engineering, catalyst design, catalyst deactivation, pressure drop, clogging, side reactions etc., as well as their corresponding solutions and achievements in this mini-review.

T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR) is an important rejection type in kidney transplantation, characterized by T cells and macrophages infiltration. The application of bioinformatic analysis in genomic research has been widely used. In the present study, Microarray data was analyzed to identify the potential diagnostic markers of TCMR in kidney transplantation. Cell-type identification by estimating relative subsets of RNA transcript (CIBERSORT) was performed to determine the distribution of immune cell infiltration in the pathology. Totally 129 upregulated differently expressed genes (DEGs) and 378 downregulated DEGs were identified. The GO and KEGG results demonstrated that DEGs were mainly associated with pathways and diseases involved in immune response. The intersection of the two algorithms (PPI network and LASSO) contains three overlapping genes (CXCR6, CXCL13 and FCGR1A). After verification in GSE69677, only CXCR6 and CXCL13 were selected. Immune cells Infiltration analysis demonstrated that CXCR6 and CXCL13 were positively correlated with gamma delta T cells (p < 0.001), CD4+ memory activated T cells (p < 0.001), CD8+ T cells (p < 0.001) and M1 macrophages (p = 0.006), and negatively correlated with M2 macrophages (p < 0.001) and regulatory T cells (p < 0.001). Immunohistochemical staining and image analysis confirmed the overexpression of CXCR6 and CXCL13 in human allograft TCMR samples. CXCR6 and CXCL13 could be diagnostic biomarkers of TCMR and potential targets for immunotherapy in patients with TCMR.

Timely risk information acquisition and diagnosis during foundation pit excavation (FPE) processes are vital for ensuring the safe and effective construction of underground urban infrastructures. Unfortunately, diverse geological and hydrogeological conditions and complex shapes of the foundation pit create barriers for reliable FPE risk prognosis and control. Furthermore, typical support systems during FPE use temporary measures, which have limited capacity to confront excessive loads, large deformations, and seepage. This study aims to establish an intelligent risk prognosis and control framework based on digital twin (DT) for ensuring safe and effective FPE processes. Previous studies have conducted extensive experimental and numerical analyses for examining unsafe conditions during FPE. How to enable intelligent risk prognosis and control of tedious FPE processes by integrating physics-based models and sensory data collected in the field is still challenging. DT could help to establish the interaction and feedback mechanisms between the physical and virtual space. In this study, the authors have established a DT model that consists of a physical space model and a high-fidelity physics-based model of a foundation pit in virtual space. As a result, a mechanism for effective acquisition and fusion of heterogeneous information from both physical and virtual space is established. Then, the authors proposed an integrated model and data-driven approach for examining safety risks during FPE. In the end, the authors have validated the proposed method through a case study of the FPE of the Wuhan Metro Line. The results show that the proposed method could provide theoretical and practical support for future intelligent FPE.

Abstract Rejection is a common complication of allogeneic tissue transplantation. Fixation of splenocytes (SP) with 1‐ethyl‐3‐(3'‐dimethylaminopropyl)‐carbodiimide (ECDI) induces immune tolerance in recipients post‐transplantation; however, the mechanism underlying this effect remains unclear. Here, we determined the mechanisms of ECDI‐fixed donor SP (ECDI‐SP) in inducing tolerance in skin allograft transplantation. C57BL/6‐recipient mice that received Balb/c full‐thickness skin transplants with two infusions of donor‐derived ECDI‐SP, along with rapamycin showed superior skin allograft survival and lower inflammatory cell infiltration than mice that received rapamycin‐only treatment. In ECDI‐SP‐treated mice, the levels of anti‐inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)‐10 in sera were markedly increased, whereas the expression of inflammatory cytokines was significantly suppressed. Splenic macrophages were significantly polarized to the alternative activated macrophage (M2) phenotype, with expansion of CD4+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the spleen and draining lymph nodes. Allostimulatory activity of ECDI‐SP in vitro and donor‐specific ex vivo hyporesponsiveness were observed. C57BL/6 macrophages engulfed allogeneic Balb/c‐derived ECDI‐SP, polarized to the M2 phenotype, with pronounced cAMP response element‐binding (CREB) protein phosphorylation. By facilitating increased IL‐10 expression, ECDI‐SP induced M2 polarization and Treg production, inhibiting effector T‐cell proliferation. Thus, ECDI‐SP modulates macrophage M2 polarization by increasing CREB phosphorylation and promoting Treg production to suppress allogeneic skin graft rejection.

The continuous ovulation of laying hens during the peak period is likely to cause oxidative stress, resulting in a reduction in the laying cycle over time. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant effects of Aronia melanocarpa (AM) in the diet and its effect on the yolk precursor content caused by ovulation in laying hens during the peak period. A total of 300 25-week-old Roman brown laying hens were randomly divided into five groups with six replicates in each group, 10 in each replicate. The control group was fed a basal diet, the positive control group was fed a Vitamin C (VC) plus basal diet, and the experimental group was fed 1%, 4%, and 7% doses of AM plus diet according to the principle of energy and nitrogen requirements, which lasted eight weeks. At the end of the study, the egg quality, biochemical, and antioxidant markers, as well as mRNA and protein expressions, were evaluated to determine the potential signaling pathways involved. Results showed that the addition of AM to the feed increased the weight of laying hens at the peak of egg production and improved egg quality. The biochemical markers, as well as the antioxidant parameters in the serum, liver, and ovarian tissues, were ameliorated. The gene and protein expression of recombinant kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) in the liver and ovarian tissues was decreased, while nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression was increased. The feed supplemented with AM also increased the estrogen contents and lipid parameters, as well as the gene and protein expressions related to the yolk precursor. Feed supplemented with AM could improve the egg quality and the oxidative stress caused by the ovulation process of laying hens during the peak egg production period by activating the Keap1/Nrf2 signaling pathway. These results suggest that the feed supplemented with 1% AM and 4% AM can improve egg production in peak laying hens.

Biochar application is an important measure to regulate SOC. However, the effects of biochar application on soil respiration and SOC fraction of the saline soil have been scarcely investigated. Therefore, in this study, we monitored the annual SOC, nutrients, temperature, water content, and respiration rate under three maize-straw-derived biochar application doses (0, 15, and 30 t∙hm−2). Biochar enriched the soil in terms of fast-acting potassium and phosphorus, alkali-hydrolyzable N, NO3−-N, and NH4+-N to varying degrees. One-time biochar application in the trial year continued to fertilizer retention in the following year. Mineral-associated organic carbon and SOC contents increased with time after biochar application, whereas the changes in particulate organic carbon content were the opposite; soil respiration rate was reduced by 7.7–14.7%, and the reduction increased with the dose as well in successive years. The soil respiration rate and soil temperature showed a significant linear correlation, but the application of a high amount of biochar reduced the correlation between the two. Considering the soil respiration rate and physicochemical properties, the best biochar application rate for saline soil is suggested to be 30 t∙hm−2. This study is of great significance for soil carbon sequestration, emission reduction in saline areas, and the realization of a “carbon peak” in the sense of farmland.

Paeonia lactiflora Pall. is widely used in medicine, garden applications, and as a potted ornamental. Cultivated varieties of paeonifloras suitable for cut flowers are urgently needed. In this study, the pollen morphology of P. lactiflora was studied and the characters of different varieties were compared, so as to provide reference for selecting suitable parents for new hybrid varieties. We examined the pollen morphology of 15 herbaceous peony varieties using scanning electron microscopy and analyzed the external pollen morphology and genetic relationship of the varieties. The pollen grains of the studied varieties were spheroidal or subspheroidal, bilaterally symmetrical monads, circular in polar view, and circular or elliptical in equatorial view. The exine of the pollen grains was observed as being relatively smooth under the light microscope, with the area around the equatorial axis having more lumina under the scanning electron microscope. The pollen grain exine sculpture was either reticular or pit type. The pollen apertures were tricolporate, arranged longitudinally, and equally spaced. The pollen grains were of two sizes: medium and small. The differences between the varieties were mainly reflected in the exine sculpture of the pollen. The closer the genetic relationship between the 15 peony varieties, the more subtle the differences in the exine sculpture. In the same cluster group, the morphological characteristics of herbaceous peony pollen were correlated with the shapes of flower and scale buds and the texture of the petals. However, the study identified no direct correlation with the cultivar type and flower color.
