Abstract This study aimed to identify the factors causing NH3 emissions in the South Korean Peninsula and West Sea region. To analyze the trends of NH3 and other air pollutants, such as NOx, CO, and NR-PM1, we collected samples from six supersites across the peninsula, a roadside in Seoul, and the West Sea over different sampling periods, ranging from 1 month to 1 year. The highest NH3 concentrations were found at rural areas, ascribed to agricultural activities, particularly NH4NO3 decomposition at high summer temperatures. Areas with low population densities recorded the lowest NH3 concentrations, attributed to the lack of anthropogenic activities. A roadside field experiment confirmed the close link between ambient NH3 and vehicle emissions in urban regions by showing a strong correlation between CO and NOx concentrations and that of NH3. Moreover, we examined oceanic emissions near the eastern coast of South Korea in the West Sea. Long-range transportation studies confirmed that most of the pollutants (NH3, CO, and PM1) were transported by wind from the northeastern region of China. A maritime origin study showed that oceanic emissions and NH4NO3 decomposition in the atmosphere owing to high temperatures were the causing NH3 pollution. These findings provided valuable insights into the emission sources of NH3 in primary air pollutants in South Korea, highlighting the contributions of land-based and oceanic sources. Our study can help inform policymakers and stakeholders for developing effective regional air pollution control strategies.

Abstract Air pollution by particulate matter (PM) in the air including PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10, which are categorized by particle size, is a critical global environmental issue, harming the climate, ecosystems, and human health. Especially, ultrafine dust including PM1.0 and PM2.5 poses significant human health risks. Commercial fabric‐based filters effectively trap PMs but cause high‐pressure drop and limited filter capacity and reusability. Electrospun nanofiber filters address some issues but have low mechanical strength, toxic exposure risks, long fabrication times, and restrained reusability. Herein, a reusable and transparent impaction‐based PM filter using a UV‐curable polymeric stencil with micro apertures is proposed. Resistance traits of plants can be activated both at the damaged site and undamaged parts. Systemic resistance induced by local exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) application alleviated negative effect of low water availability on growth performance of clonal plant. However, timing of systemic resistance was poorly understood. Timing of systemic resistance refers to its activation and decay time within clonal network. Clonal fragment of Centella asiatica with four successive ramets (including first-oldest, second-older, third-old and fourth-young ramets) subjected to low water availability (20% soil moisture content) was used to explore effects of local exogenous ABA application on the timing of resistance activation and decay. Systemic resistance activated by local exogenous ABA application after 4 days remained at least 28 days. Compared with control, biomass accumulation of whole clonal fragment, root biomass and ratio of belowground to aboveground biomass significantly increased by local exogenous ABA application after 28 days. It is suggested that rapid activation and delay of resistance response induced by local exogenous ABA application within clonal network may improve fitness of clonal plant subjected to abiotic stress.

Water supply is one of the core ecosystem services functions for wetland. Due to the important status of Zoige wetland, assessment of water supply in Zoige wetland is significant for ecological security all over the world. In this paper, Heihe and Baihe basins in Zoige wetland were taken as research objects, the water yield module of the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) model was used to spatially quantify water supply, with the aims of revealing the driving mechanism of water supply under different basins and spatial scale. We observed the spatial pattern change of water yield under baseline and eleven future scenarios and used the ANOVA of repeated measures and multiple linear regression model to explore the patterns and driving factors of water supply in Heihe and Baihe rivers basins. The research results were as follow. (1) The precipitation is main factor to improve water yield, but this intensity is different in different basins and spatial scale. Topography, climate, vegetation, and percentage of wetland conditions have important impacts on water yield services. However, the impacts of these conditions on water yield were various significantly across different watersheds and spatial scales (excluding factors such as precipitation, slope, and percentage of swamp wetland). (2) The spatial pattern of water yield main was affected by land use change and the amount of water yield main was affected by future climate change. (3) Water yield in the Baihe basin was more sensitive to climate change, while the Heihe basin is more sensitive to land use changes. Wetland ecological restoration strategies can effectively improve regional water yield, especially in the Heihe basin. (4) In all scenarios, the southeast regions of the study region were both the main hot spots of water yield. Wetland ecological restoration strategies have added hot spots in the north regions of the Baihe river basin, reduced hot spots in the middle-south regions of the Heihe basin.

The outstanding thermoelectric material, SnSe, is also known for its inferior mechanical properties, which bring great inconvenience for its application in thermoelectric devices. In this work, SnSe bulks were prepared via a sequential procedure of high-pressure synthesis (HPS), ball milling, and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The produced polycrystalline samples with a unique microstructure of tightly-bound quasi-equiaxed grains exhibited excellent mechanical properties. The Vickers hardness (HV), compressive strength (σc), and bending strength (σb) reached 1.1 GPa, 300 MPa, and 90 MPa, respectively, all of which are far superior to those of ordinary polycrystalline SnSe. Furthermore, the microstructures did not deteriorate thermoelectric performance. This work demonstrated an effective procedure to prepare polycrystalline microstructure-engineered SnSe materials, which not only show advantages in device applications but also shed light on property enhancement for other layer-structured thermoelectric materials.

The aim of this study to develop a stable anthocyanin indicator film to monitor the freshness of chilled beef. Composite anthocyanin microcapsules (CAM) were prepared and used to prepare indicator films using carrageenan (Car) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as film-forming matrix with different amounts (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, V/V) of added CAM, and the structural and physical properties of the resulting films were characterized, and their application to monitor beef freshness was investigated. The results showed that the addition of CMC significantly improved the mechanical properties, barrier properties and thermal stability of Car films. The film with 15% CAM had the highest tensile strength (17.76 MPa) and lowest water vapor transmission rate (1.35 × 10－11 g/(m·s·Pa)), and showed a tightly and orderly arranged cross-section. The Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that the components of the indicator film were structurally similar and compatible. When the indicator film was exposed to ammonia, its color changed from pink to blue-green and eventually to yellow. The indicator film was applied to monitor the freshness of beef during storage at 4 ℃. The results showed that beef reached secondary freshness and spoilage on day 4 and 7, respectively, and that the color of the indicator film changed from pink to purple and green correspondingly. In conclusion, the film with 15% CAM is the most sensitive to changes in the freshness of beef and thus can be used to detect it.

Abstract Purpose Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are common. With the development of locking plates, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the proximal humerus can provide excellent clinical outcomes. The quality of fracture reduction is crucial in the locking plate fixation of proximal humeral fractures. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of 3-dimensional (3D) printing technology and computer virtual technology assisted preoperative simulation on the reduction quality and clinical outcomes of 3-part and 4-part proximal humeral fractures. Method A retrospective comparative analysis of 3-part and 4-part PHFs undergoing open reduction internal fixation was performed. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to whether computer virtual technology and 3D printed technology were used for preoperative simulation: the simulation group and the conventional group. Operative time, intraoperative bleeding, hospital stay, quality of fracture reduction, Constant scores, American Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ASES) scores, shoulder range of motion, complications, and revision surgeries were assessed. Results This study included 67 patients (58.3%) in the conventional group and 48 patients (41.7%) in the simulation group. The patient demographics and fracture characteristics were comparable in these groups. Compared with the conventional group, the simulation group had shorter operation time and less intraoperative bleeding (P 120° (OR 5.8, 95% CI 1.8–18.0) and mean constant score of > 65 (OR 3.4, 95% CI 1.5–7.4) was higher in the simulation group than the conventional group, as well as a lower incidence of complications in the simulation group was obtained (OR 0.2, 95% CI 0.1–0.6). Conclusions This study identified that preoperative simulation assisted by computer virtual technology and 3D printed technology can improve reduction quality and clinical outcomes in treatment of 3-part and 4-part PHFs.

Abstract Background and Aims There are currently no clear conclusions about whether major depression (MD) and bipolar disorder (BD) increase the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED). In our study, we used a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to discover the causal associations between MD, BD and ED. Methods We got single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to MD, BD and ED from the MRC IEU Open genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets. After a series of selection, SNPs left were selected as instrumental variables (IVs) of MD and BD for the following MR test to evaluate the relationship of genetically predicted MD or BD with the incidence of ED. Among them, we used the random-effects inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method as the main analysis. Finally, sensitivity analyses were further performed using Cochran’s Q test, funnel plots, MR-Egger regression, Leave-one-out method and MR- pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (PRESSO). Results Genetically-predicted MD was causally related to the incidence of ED in the IVW methods (odds ratio (OR), 1.53; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.19–1.96; p = 0.001), while no causal impact of BD on the risk of ED (OR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.87–1.04; p = 0.306). The results of sensitivity analyses supported our conclusion, and no directional pleiotropy were found. Conclusion The findings of this research found evidence of a causal relationship between MD and ED. However, we did not find a causal relationship between BD and ED in European populations.

The facilitative GLUT1 and GLUT3 hexose transporters are expressed abundantly in macrophages, but whether they have distinct functions remains unclear. We confirmed that GLUT1 expression increased after M1 polarization stimuli and found that GLUT3 expression increased after M2 stimulation in macrophages. Conditional deletion of Glut3 (LysM-Cre Glut3fl/fl) impaired M2 polarization of bone marrow–derived macrophages. Alternatively activated macrophages from the skin of patients with atopic dermatitis showed increased GLUT3 expression, and a calcipotriol-induced model of atopic dermatitis was rescued in LysM-Cre Glut3fl/fl mice. M2-like macrophages expressed GLUT3 in human wound tissues as assessed by transcriptomics and costaining, and GLUT3 expression was significantly decreased in nonhealing, compared with healing, diabetic foot ulcers. In an excisional wound healing model, LysM-Cre Glut3fl/fl mice showed significantly impaired M2 macrophage polarization and delayed wound healing. GLUT3 promoted IL-4/STAT6 signaling, independently of its glucose transport activity. Unlike plasma membrane–localized GLUT1, GLUT3 was localized primarily to endosomes and was required for the efficient endocytosis of IL-4Rα subunits. GLUT3 interacted directly with GTP-bound RAS in vitro and in vivo through its intracytoplasmic loop domain, and this interaction was required for efficient STAT6 activation and M2 polarization. PAK activation and macropinocytosis were also impaired without GLUT3, suggesting broader roles for GLUT3 in the regulation of endocytosis. Thus, GLUT3 is required for efficient alternative macrophage polarization and function, through a glucose transport–independent, RAS-mediated role in the regulation of endocytosis and IL-4/STAT6 activation.

Abstract A practical approach to designing 3D porous materials with new functionalities for oil spill clean‐up attracts widespread attention. The carbonized seaweed‐coated melamine sponge (CMS) can selectively absorb oil immediately due to its countless pores using capillary‐driven force to absorb oil. The microstructure and behaviors of the CMS are thoroughly investigated in relation to the unique porous structure, mechanical stability, wetting response, and in‐depth processing of the high‐speed visualization experiment to determine its promising abilities. For the special CMS structure with a unit cell size of 1 × 1 × 1 cm, the total volume of oil inside the capillary tube is drawn inward after 56 ms, and the absorption rate is estimated to be ≈15 200 liters per spare metre hour without any external power inputs. According to the results, theoretical models are proposed to estimate the oil absorption rate as a function of time by continuity of the oil column in the capillary tube based on quantitative analysis of the optically analyzed oil interface phenomena. It is first shown to be a reliable approach for describing volumetric absorption rate and effective CMS thickness by visualizing the capillary spreading flow. It is expected that this research will hold tremendous potential strategies for environmental remediation.

Uncovering the mystery of efficient and directional energy transfer in photosynthetic organisms remains a critical challenge in quantum biology. Recent experimental evidence and quantum theory developments indicate the significance of quantum features of molecular vibrations in assisting photosynthetic energy transfer, which provides the possibility of manipulating the process by controlling molecular vibrations. Here, we propose and theoretically demonstrate efficient manipulation of photosynthetic energy transfer by using vibrational strong coupling between the vibrational state of a Fenna–Matthews–Olson (FMO) complex and the vacuum state of an optical cavity. Specifically, based on a full-quantum analytical model to describe the strong coupling effect between the optical cavity and molecular vibration, we realize efficient manipulation of energy transfer efficiency (from 58% to 92%) and energy transfer time (from 20 to 500 ps) in one branch of FMO complex by actively controlling the coupling strength and the quality factor of the optical cavity under both near-resonant and off-resonant conditions, respectively. Our work provides a practical scenario to manipulate photosynthetic energy transfer by externally interfering molecular vibrations via an optical cavity and a comprehensible conceptual framework for researching other similar systems. ObjectiveTo investigate the genetic polymorphism of InDel loci in SifalnDel 45plex system in the Han population in Jiangsu Province and the Mongolian population in Inner Mongolia, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in forensic medicine.MethodsSifaInDel 45plex system was used for genotyping in blood samples of 398 unrelated individuals from the above two populations, and allele frequencies and population genetic parameters of the two populations were calculated respectively. Eight intercontinental populations in the gnomAD database were used as reference populations. The genetic distances between the two studied populations and eight reference populations were calculated based on the allele frequencies of 27 autosomal-InDels （A-InDels）. The phylogenetic trees and multidimensional scaling （MDS） analysis diagrams were constructed accordingly.ResultsAmong two studied populations, the 27 A-InDels and 16 X-InDels showed no linkage disequilibrium between each other and the allele frequency distributions were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The CDP of the 27 A-InDels in two studied populations were all higher than 0.999 999 999 9, and the CPEtrio were all less than 0.999 9. The CDP of the 16 X-InDels in Han in Jiangsu and Mongolian in Inner Mongolia female and male samples were 0.999 997 962, 0.999 998 389, and 0.999 818 940, 0.999 856 063, respectively. The CMECtrio were all less than 0.999 9. The results of population genetics showed that the Jiangsu Han nationality, Inner Mongolia Mongolian nationality and East Asian population clustered into one branch, showing closer genetic relationship. The other 7 intercontinental populations clustered into another group. And the above 3 populations displayed distant genetic relationships with the other 7 intercontinental populations.ConclusionThe InDels in the SifaInDel 45plex system have good genetic polymorphism in the two studied populations, which can be used for forensic individual identification or as an effective complement for paternity identification, and to distinguish different intercontinental populations.

Abstract Background Human brucellosis has become one of the major public health problems in China, and increases atypical manifestations, such as fever of unknown origin (FUO), and misdiagnosis rates has complicated the diagnosis of brucellosis. To date, no relevant study on the relationship between brucellosis and FUO has been conducted. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 35 patients with confirmed human brucellosis and prospectively recorded their outcomes by telephone interview. The patients were admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University between January 01, 2013 and October 31, 2019. Patient data were collected from hospital medical records. Gene Ontology (GO) has been widely used to annotate functions of genes and gene products. Here, we proposed a new method, TripletGO, to deduce GO terms of protein-coding and non-coding genes, through the integration of four complementary pipelines built on transcript expression profile, genetic sequence alignment, protein sequence alignment, and naïve probability. TripletGO was tested on a large set of 5754 genes from 8 species (human, mouse, Arabidopsis, rat, fly, budding yeast, fission yeast, and nematoda) and 2433 proteins with available expression data from the third Critical Assessment of Protein Function Annotation challenge (CAFA3). Experimental results show that TripletGO achieves function annotation accuracy significantly beyond the current state-of-the-art approaches. Detailed analyses show that the major advantage of TripletGO lies in the coupling of a new triplet network-based profiling method with the feature space mapping technique, which can accurately recognize function patterns from transcript expression profiles. Meanwhile, the combination of multiple complementary models, especially those from transcript expression and protein-level alignments, improves the coverage and accuracy of the final GO annotation results. Bahn et al explore the role of the lipid raft protein Prominin-1 in liver regeneration. They show that Prominin-1 promotes hepatocyte proliferation after acute liver injury by interacting with the signal transducer GP130, confining it to lipid rafts and activating IL-6 signaling pathway and eventual activation of STAT3.

The ionosphere is an important component of near-Earth space that has a significant impact on communication and navigation. Furthermore, the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere is a widely used parameter in near-Earth plasma environment studies. A design of a digital beacon receiver system for automatically measuring TEC is presented. Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) hardware equipment with software-defined radio technology was used in the tri-band beacon digital receiver to receive and rapidly preprocess beacon signals from satellites in different frequency bands. A software system is built to implement the automatic control of the receiver and to enable data processing of the preprocessed data in order to obtain its phase information and derive the TEC. The tri-band digital beacon receiver system is experimentally proven to automatically detect and archive transit satellites in real time, automatically receive and process satellite beacon signals with recording, and automatically generate TEC measurement results.
