Walking promotes active aging; however, walking prevalence changes among older adults by age and environmental conditions remain unclear. Age-period-cohort (APC) differences in walking trends among Korean older adults were examined. Data included adults aged ≥ 65 years (n = 592,235) from the nationally representative Korean Community Health Survey. Regional units examined were metropolitan cities, small- and medium-sized cities, and rural areas. Environment-stratified APC modeling was applied for walking prevalence (walking days/time during the past week). From 2008 to 2017, the walking prevalence gap between regional units widened. Decreasing trends were most apparent in rural areas, including by birth year. In all areas, walking decreased with increased age. No distinct period effects were found. Each effect’s magnitude was larger in rural areas than cities. Differential APC effects by environmental conditions likely influence walking prevalence changes among older adults. Walking promotion for older adults should consider APC effects and environmental conditions.

29-Fold luminescence enhancement of upconversion nanoparticle-sensitized perovskite quantum dots was achieved by implementing a metal–insulator–metal configuration and plasmonic coupling.

Open door laminoplasty using plates is a safe and effective procedure for multi-level cord compression. To achieve stable laminar arch, various types of plate have been developed and used. Now, we introduce two rare complications related to the laminar shelf of plate.In the first case, we used the wider laminar shelf plate because the elevated lamina did not fit well into the usual laminar shelf. During follow-up, cord compression due to laminar shelf was observed.And in the second case, the laminar shelf of plate did not fit into the elevated lamina, so we inserted it with a little bit of force. But the patient’s symptom was not improved. On CT image, the inner cortical bone of the lamina was fractured.To prevent these complications, surgeons need to consider the thickness of the lamina and the size of the laminar shelf before surgery.

Despite the unique ability of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) to convert near-infrared (NIR) light to high-energy UV-vis radiation, low quantum efficiency has rendered their application unpractical in biomedical fields. Here, we report anatase titania-coated plasmonic gold nanorods decorated with UCNPs (Au NR@aTiO2@UCNPs) for combinational photothermal and photodynamic therapy to treat cancer. Our novel architecture employs the incorporation of an anatase titanium dioxide (aTiO2) photosensitizer as a spacer and exploits the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of the Au core. The LSPR-derived near-field enhancement induces a threefold boost of upconversion emissions, which are re-absorbed by neighboring aTiO2 and Au nanocomponents. Photocatalytic experiments strongly infer that LSPR-induced hot electrons are injected into the conduction band of aTiO2, generating reactive oxygen species. As phototherapeutic agents, our hybrid nanostructures show remarkable in vitro anticancer effect under NIR light [28.0% cancer cell viability against Au NR@aTiO2 (77.3%) and UCNP@aTiO2 (98.8%)] ascribed to the efficient radical formation and LSPR-induced heat generation, with cancer cell death primarily following an apoptotic pathway. In vivo animal studies further confirm the tumor suppression ability of Au NR@aTiO2@UCNPs through combinatorial photothermal and photodynamic effect. Our hybrid nanomaterials emerge as excellent multifunctional phototherapy agents, providing a valuable addition to light-triggered cancer treatments in deep tissue.

In the exploitation of nanozymes possessing intrinsic enzyme-like activities for cancer therapy, minor focus has been devoted to plasmonic nanostructures with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-driven properties. Here, we report the application of unique peroxidase-mimicking plasmonic photo-nanozymes coupling tumor-microenvironment-responsive reactive oxygen species generation with photothermal effect for effective combinatorial therapy. The well-defined anisotropic photo-nanozyme is synthesized by selectively depositing Pd nanoparticles on the tips of gold nanobypyramids. Intrinsic peroxidase-like properties with 1.5-fold-activity enhancement under photoexcitation are ascribed to a Pd-induced hot electrons/holes separation with efficient H2O2 decomposition. The LSPR-induced photocatalytic/photothermal combinatorial effects are remarkably enhanced upon H2O2 addition, critically suppressing the cell survival rate under near-infrared light. An effective decomposition of cell-signaling H2O2 additionally reveals prominent expression hindrance of vascular endothelial growth factor and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α. Our seminal findings uncover an interrelation between LSPR-induced phenomena and biomimetic fingerprints, valuable to overcome the shortcomings of conventional photodynamic therapy.

This study aimed to assess how the social distancing measures impacted the choice of walking as a transportation mode, environmental preferences for walking, and walking practice among urban residents in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. Data were collected through an online survey from September 21 to September 28, 2020, when the second level of social distancing measures was implemented; 2,112 participants aged 19 or older were included in the analysis. During COVID-19, the choice of walking as a means of transportation increased by 10.1%p, while the choice of public transportation decreased by 16.9%p. Environmental preferences for walking were more than moderate in neighborhood public open spaces, neighborhood streets, and riverside trails. Walking practice by purposes decreased significantly during COVID-19, especially in utilitarian walking. The study suggests that social distancing measures have a visible negative effect on walking practice among urban residents, as well as an invisible effect on perceived environment and choice of transportation mode in the metropolitan city. To break the physical inactivity habits established during COVID-19, guidelines for promoting walking should be developed, focusing on the frequency of walking practice. In the post-COVID-19 era, urban and transportation planning in metropolitan cities need to be reviewed focusing on the development of neighborhood assets related to walking and activation of active transportation.

Graphitic porous carbons with combined two-dimensional layer crystallinity and porosity have shown great potential for energy storage. This report documents the design of ternary carbide (MAX)-derived carbon (MDC) from a MAX precursor with highly porous graphitic features, prepared through one-pot chlorination synthesis. The MDCs exhibited a peculiar discharge capacity pattern during long-term cycling, in which the discharge capacity decreased from 620 mA h g−1 (1st cycle) to 500 mA h g−1 (20th cycle) and then increased in proportion to the cycle number, reaching a value of ∼680 mA h g−1 (300th cycle) at 0.1C-rate. Even at high 0.5C-rate, the discharge cycling pattern was similar to that at 0.1C-rate, with a high reversible capacity of ∼650 mA h g−1 at the 500th cycle. Furthermore, despite applying two C-rate steps from 0.1C to 0.5C, an outstanding performance of ∼720 mA h g−1 at 0.1C-rate was observed at the 400th cycle, eclipsing the cycleability at a single 0.1 C-rate. In the MDCs, the order-to-disorder transformation in parts of the graphite upon prolonged cycling gave rise to defect structures consisting of many connected pores, which can facilitate Li-ion migration and increase the ion paths and storage sites.

Food allergy is a hypersensitive immune reaction to food proteins including cow’s milk protein. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes, are newly discovered intercellular conveyors of functional molecular mechanisms and mediated intercellular interactions involving mast cells and are particularly relevant to allergy. In this study, we investigated whether cow’s milk casein-induced allergy (CIA)-derived EVs can modulate mast cell activation. EVs in CIA mice and control mice were isolated using the ultracentrifugation method and the isolated EVs were quantified using BCA analysis. CIA responses were determined through changes in body temperature and systemic symptom score. The number of EVs was higher in CIA-derived EVs compared to normal EVs. EVs marker proteins such as CD63 and CD9 were elevated in CIA-derived EVs. The levels of EV-associated cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α were significantly elevated in CIA-derived EVs. In addition, CIA-derived EVs significantly induced degranulation via Lyn kinase activation in mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells and human mast cells. Our results demonstrate that CIA-derived EVs can induce a reaction similar to cow’s milk allergic reaction via mast cell activation. These results provide an insight into the pathology of cow’s milk allergy and a potential therapeutic approach through targeting EV release and/or uptake.

Hybrid nanostructures are promising for ultrasound-triggered drug delivery and treatment, called sonotheranostics. Structures based on plasmonic nanoparticles for photothermal-induced microbubble inflation for ultrasound imaging exist. However, they have limited therapeutic applications because of short microbubble lifetimes and limited contrast. Photochemistry-based sonotheranostics is an attractive alternative, but building near-infrared (NIR)-responsive echogenic nanostructures for deep tissue applications is challenging because photolysis requires high-energy (UV-visible) photons. Here, we report a photochemistry-based echogenic nanoparticle for in situ NIR-controlled ultrasound imaging and ultrasound-mediated drug delivery. Our nanoparticle has an upconversion nanoparticle core and an organic shell carrying gas generator molecules and drugs. The core converts low-energy NIR photons into ultraviolet emission for photolysis of the gas generator. Carbon dioxide gases generated in the tumor-penetrated nanoparticle inflate into microbubbles for sonotheranostics. Using different NIR laser power allows dual-modal upconversion luminescence planar imaging and cross-sectional ultrasonography. Low-frequency (10 MHz) ultrasound stimulated microbubble collapse, releasing drugs deep inside the tumor through cavitation-induced transport. We believe that the photoechogenic inflatable hierarchical nanostructure approach introduced here can have broad applications for image-guided multimodal theranostics.

In recent years, metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have attracted attention as semiconductors that achieve desirable properties for optoelectronic devices. However, two challenges—instability and the regulated nature of Pb —remain to be addressed with commercial applications. The development of Pb-free halide double perovskite (HDP) materials has gained interest and attention as a result. This family offers potential in the field of optoelectronic devices through flexible material designs and compositional adjustments. We highlight recent progress and development in halide double perovskites and encompass the synthesis, optoelectronic properties, and engineering of the electronic structures of these materials along with their applications in optoelectronic devices. Computational and data-driven statistical methods can also be used to explore mechanisms and discover promising candidate double perovskites.

As the amount of fission product released from ISLOCA was overestimated because of conservative assumptions in the past, several studies have been recently conducted to evaluate the actual release amount. Among several pathways for the ISLOCA, most studies were focused on the pathway with the highest possibility. However, different ISLOCA pathways may have different fission product release characteristics. In this study, fission product behavior was analyzed for various pathways at the Westinghouse two-loop plant using MELCOR. Four pathways are considered: the pipes from a cold leg, from a downcomer, from a hot leg to the outlet of RHR heat exchanger, and the pipe from the hot leg to the inlet of RHR pump (Pathway 1–4). According to the analysis results, cladding fails at around 2.5 h in Pathways 1 and 2, and on the other hand, about 3.3 h in Pathways 3 and 4 because the ISLOCA pathways affect the safety injection flow path. While the release amount of cesium and iodine ranges between 20 and 26% in Pathways 1 to 3, Pathway 4 allows only 5% to the environment because the break location is submerged. Also, as more than 90% of cesium released to the environment passes through the personnel door, reinforcing the pressure capacity of the doors would be a significant factor in the accident management of the ISLOCA.

Although epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have shown dramatic response and improvement in treating lung cancer with mutant EGFR, the emergence of drug resistance remains a major problem. In particular, some mutations including T790 M and C797S have been recognized as mechanisms of acquired resistance because they weaken binding affinity to drugs. To date, many attempts have been made to develop a new drug for overcoming acquired resistance to EGFR-TKIs, including secondary mutations. However, an appropriate animal model to evaluate in vivo efficacy during novel drug development remains lacking. Purpose: Informed by attachment theory, the current study explores whether the association between bullying victimization and STIs acquisition among African American youth is moderated by general parental communication or parental communication about sex. Method: Data were collected from 546 African American adolescents in four neighborhoods in Chicago’s South Side. Univariate analyses, Spearman’s rank-order correlation analyses, and hierarchical logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results: A positive association between bullying victimization and STIs acquisition was found. General parental communication did not moderate the association between bullying victimization and STIs acquisition. However, parental communication about sex did moderate the association between bullying victimization and youth STIs acquisition. Discussion: The study has important implications for developing interventions to address the adverse consequences of bully victimization that emphasize parental communication about sex as a major component.

In order to reduce risks from the Steam Generator Tube Rupture (SGTR) accident and to meet safety targets, various measures have been analyzed to minimize the amount of fission product (FP) release. In this paper, we propose an introduction of a Containment Filtered Venting System (CFVS) connected to the steam generator secondary side, which can reduce the amount of FP release while minimizing adverse effects identified in the previous studies. In order to compare the effect of new equipment with the existing strategy, accident simulations using MELCOR were performed. As a result of simulations, it is confirmed that CFVS operation lowers FP release into the environment, and the release fractions are lower (minimum 0.6% of the initial inventory for Cs) than that of the strategy which intends to depressurize the primary system directly (minimum 15.2% for Cs). The sensitivity analyses identify that refill of the CFVS vessel is a dominant contributor reducing the amount of FP released. As the new strategy has the possibility of hydrogen combustion and detonation in CFVS, the installation of an igniter inside the CFVS vessel may be considered in reducing such hydrogen risk.

Osimertinib is an irreversible third-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) that was initially developed to overcome the EGFR T790M mutation and is used as a standard therapy in patients with advanced non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with EGFR-activating mutations. Despite the remarkable initial efficacy, osimertinib, like other EGFR-TKIs, is limited by the emergence of acquired resistance. As the EGFR mutation C797S has been identified as a key driver of acquired resistance to osimertinib, development of a drug that targets this clinically relevant mutation could help improve patient outcomes. Here, we report the discovery and preclinical efficacy of OBX02–011, a reversible fourth-generation EGFR-TKI that overcomes the EGFR C797S mutation. Compared with approved EGFR-TKIs, OBX02–011 showed potent anticancer effects and inhibited EGFR-related signaling in various models, including those harboring the EGFR C797S mutation. In addition, in transgenic mouse models (EGFRL858R/T790M/C797S), OBX02–011 treatment effectively inhibited tumor growth and EGFR activity, leading to enhanced survival. Collectively, these results suggest that OBX02–011 may be a promising new EGFR-TKI to overcome C797S-mediated resistance in NSCLC. Significance: OBX02–011 is designed to target EGFR C797S and can overcome EGFR double and triple mutations to effectively treat lung cancer.

As strenuous research works approach the theoretical limits of the lithium-ion battery, the need to exploit more sustainable chemistries has emerged as a primary concern. The development of the lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery offers an energy density of 2567 W h kg−1, reflecting an up to three to fivefold enhancement against the state-of-the-art Li-ion device. Solving the critical degradation of the metal anode and suppressing correlated side reactions in the Li–S cell represent, however, pivotal steps towards commercial consideration. In light of the unique Li–S electrochemistry, we examine herein the technical challenges of the lithium metal anode, including the dendritic lithium nucleation and growth during Li plating, and the stabilization of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). We revisit key contributions to establish a guideline of crucial factors determining the stability of the anode and its correlation with the electrolyte selection, electrode current density, and the effect of the shuttle of polysulfide intermediate species. Most importantly, our review delivers a comprehensive comparison of introduced strategies for the metal surface protection (including electrolyte-modification-based approaches and metal surface coating), along with a theoretical understanding and analysis of the underlying methodologies. This review sheds light on future opportunities towards a practical application of Li–S batteries, while stimulating progress in the exploitation of lithium metal anodes in parallel technologies in the development of energy storage for a sustainable future (266 citations).

We report a distinct method for the production of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) nanostructures using block copolymer micelles as scaffolds. We reveal that various nanostructures can be obtained by controlling the parameters related to micelle disassembly. The strategy reported herein can be generalized for the fabrication of diverse nanostructures toward target-oriented potential applications.

Despite the ability to precisely tune their bandgap energies, mixed halide perovskites (MHPs) suffer from significant spectral instability, which obstructs their utilization for the rational design of light-emitting diodes. Here, we investigate the origin of the electroluminescence peak shifts in layered MHPs containing bromide and iodide. X-ray diffraction and steady-state absorption measurements prove effective integration of iodide into the cubic lattice and the spatially uniform distribution of halides in the ambient environment. However, the applied electric field during the device operation is found to drive the systematic halide migration. Quantum mechanical density functional theory calculations reveal that the different activation energies required for directional ion hopping lead to the redistribution of anions. In-depth analyses of the electroluminescence spectra indicate that the spectral shifting rate is dependent on the drift velocity of halides. Finally, it is suggested from our study that the dominant red emission is ascribed to the thermodynamically favorable selective hole injection. Our mechanistic study provides insights into the fundamental reason for the spectral instability of devices based on MHPs.

The colorimetric gas sensor offers an opportunity for the simple and rapid detection of toxic gaseous substances based on visually discernible changes in the color of the sensing material. In particular, the accurate detection of trace amounts of certain biomarkers in a patient's breath provides substantial clues regarding specific diseases, for example, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) for halitosis and ammonia (NH3) for kidney disorder. However, conventional colorimetric sensors often lack the sensitivity, selectivity, detection limit, and mass-productivity, impeding their commercialization. Herein, we report an inexpensive route for the meter-scale synthesis of a colorimetric sensor based on a composite nanofiber yarn that is chemically functionalized with an ionic liquid as an effective H2S adsorbent and lead acetate as a colorimetric dye. As an eye-readable and weavable sensing platform, the single-strand yarn exhibits enhanced sensitivity supported by its high surface area and well-developed porosity to detect the breath biomarker (1 ppm of H2S). Alternatively, the yarn loaded with lead iodide dyes could reversibly detect NH3 gas molecules in the ppm-level, demonstrating the facile extensibility. Finally, we demonstrated that the freestanding yarns could be sewn into patterned textiles for the fabrication of a wearable toxic gas alarm system with a visual output.

Hydrogen (H2) is one of the next-generation energy sources because it is abundant in nature and has a high combustion efficiency that produces environmentally benign products (H2O). However, H2/air mixtures are explosive at H2 concentrations above 4%, thus any leakage of H2 must be rapidly and reliably detected at much lower concentrations to ensure safety. Among the various types of H2 sensors, chemiresistive sensors are one of the most promising sensing systems due to their simplicity and low cost. This review highlights the advances in H2 chemiresistors, including metal-, semiconducting metal oxide-, carbon-based materials, and other materials. The underlying sensing mechanisms for different types of materials are discussed, and the correlation of sensing performances with nanostructures, surface chemistry, and electronic properties is presented. In addition, the discussion of each material emphasizes key advances and strategies to develop superior H2 sensors. Furthermore, recent key advances in other types of H2 sensors are briefly discussed. Finally, the review concludes with a brief outlook, perspective, and future directions.
