Abstract

In this paper we present a solar energy harvesting circuit for low-power applications describing circuit architecture and guidelines design. We evaluate the performance of two implemented prototypes intended to power a wireless embedded system under intensities and different switching frequencies. Measurements show that higher switching frequencies allow reaching the (~90%) at higher light intensities, whereas lower operating frequencies perform better under lower irradiance. Experimental circuit optimization depends on light conditions and the proposed solar energy harvester can autonomously supply the nodes sensor network WSN.

58. Self Powered Wireless Sensors for Chassis, Powertrain, Working Equipment and Trailed Implements

Abstract

Due to known vibration frequency ranges of engines, gearboxes and transmissions, and due to vibration frequencies of chassis of off-road and, more in general heavy duty vehicles, it is possible to design series of sensors, capable to self-sustain their needs from the energy point of view. This technology enables new possibilities in terms of sensorization of drivelines, chassis, trailed vehicles and mountable working equipment, both for heavy duty machines and for agricultural machines and equipments. This sensorisation technique will simplify the connection between the machine and the trailer or the equipments, but primarily will allow sensorization of elements that are traditionally non sensorized like shafts and all other parts difficult to be connected through wires. Last but not least, this technique allows the retrofit of existing vehicles increasing the control paradigms, the diagnosis (both local and remote) and the performance of these existing vehicles. The paper will show a survey of possible sensor configurations and sensor design, in order to clarify the quantitative aspects of sensors functionalities in terms of energy requirements for analog sensors acquisition, signal transduction, data transmission thorough a wireless link; all data transmitted by sensors will be acquired by a data collector, installed in the machine. This electronic control unit is a gateway, capable to share the information acquired in the traditional control machine system over CAN bus. The paper will show that the energy harvesting characteristics of piezo-electric or piezo-ceramic elements could be useful to realize autonomous small electronic systems, capable to collect signals from sensors and to send data wirelessly to a machine gateway, to realize a more controllable and safer vehicle class.

Abstract

The radiation induced crosslimking of SBR blends with pristine silica and silica modified by radiation grafting of polybutadiene oligomers has been investigated. Evidence was obtained by EPR and mechanical measurements of the formation of filler- SBR chemical bonds whose yield is enhanced by the polybutadiene coating.

Abstract

Campioni di silice precipitata, impregnati con oligomeri di polibutadiene con contenuti di vinile tra 1 e 20%, sono stati trattati con radiazioni gamma a temperatura ambiente, sotto vuoto ed in aria, con dosi nell'intervallo 5-200kGy. I campioni sono stati successivamente trattati in soxlet per allontanare gli oligomeri non legati. E' stata studiata la cinetica di graffaggio e di radioossidazione del polibutadiene al variare della dose. La caratterizzazione della silice modificata è stata effettuata mediante analisi elementare, termogravimetria, FTIR-ATR, FTIR-DR, RAMAN. Inoltre, sono state preparate mescole di SBR con silice tal quale e silice modificata con oligomeri polibutadienici e sottoposte a reticolazione indotta da radiazioni gamma con dosi tra 50 e 200 kGy a temperatura ambiente. Il confronto tra i due campioni ha evidenziato un netto miglioramento delle proprietà meccaniche per l'elastomero con la silice modificata.

Abstract

This study was the first to investigate the direct effects of anomalous concentrations of ozone mediated by summer heat waves on seed germination in alpine plants. During germination, the seeds were exposed to three peaks of O3concentration (125 ppb for 5 and 10 days; 185 ppb for 5 days), derived from measurements taken close to the species growing site. High O3concentration delayed the first germination time, increased the mean germination time, and reduced the germination percentage during and immediately after the treatment, but, in most cases, effects were weak and had almost vanished three weeks after the treatments. In few cases, chronic exposure to O3(125 for 10 days’ treatment) enhanced seed germination compared to the control, suggesting that ozone may induce antioxidant and DNA-repair mechanisms or dormancy-breaking effects in hydrated seeds. Although seed mortality increased during O3treatments in four species, the effect of O3on seed germination is mostly limited to the period of exposure, indicating that it is unlikely to produce permanent negative effects on seeds, during the germination phase. Our results show that the direct effect of O3on seeds of alpine plants may have minor impacts on plant reproductive performance during seed germination. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CT/RT) is the standard treatment of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). We evaluated the efficacy of induction docetaxel (Taxotere), cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (TPF) before CT/RT versus CT/RT alone. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with stage III-IVM0 SCCHN, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of zero to one, were randomly assigned to receive CT/RT alone (arm A: two cycles of cisplatin 20 mg/m(2), days1-4, plus 5-fluorouracil 800 mg/m(2)/day 96 h continuous infusion, during weeks 1 and 6 of radiotherapy) or three cycles of TPF (arm B: docetaxel 75 mg/m(2) and cisplatin 80 mg/m(2), day 1, and 5-fluorouracil 800 mg/m(2)/day 96 h continuous infusion, every 3 weeks) followed by the same CT/RT. The primary end point was the rate of radiologic complete response (CR) at 6-8 weeks after the end of CT/RT. RESULTS: A total of 101 patients were randomly allocated to the study (51 arm A; 50 arm B). CR rates were 21.2% (arm A) versus 50% (arm B). Median progression-free survival and overall survival were, respectively, 19.7 and 33.3 months (arm A) and 30.4 and 39.6 months (arm B). Hematologic and non-hematologic toxic effects during CT/RT were similar in the two arms. CONCLUSION: Induction TPF followed by CT/RT was associated with higher radiologic CR in patients with locally advanced SCCHN with no negative impact on CT/RT feasibility.
