Search

The spectrum of an isotropic extragalactic $\gamma$-ray background (EGB) has been measured by the Fermi-LAT telescope at high latitudes. Two new models for the EGB are derived from the subtraction of unresolved point sources and extragalactic diffuse processes, which could explain from 30% to 70% of the Fermi-LAT EGB. Within the hypothesis that the two residual EGBs are entirely due to the annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles in the Galactic halo, we obtain $conservative$ upper limits on their annihilation cross section \sigmav. Severe bounds on a possible Sommerfeld enhancement of the annihilation cross section are set as well. The propagated fluxes of proton, helium, and heavier primary cosmic-ray species (up to Fe) are a means to indirectly access the source spectrum of cosmic rays. We check the compatibility of the primary fluxes with the transport parameters derived from the B/C analysis, but also if they bring further constraints. Proton data are well described in the simplest model defined by a power-law source spectrum and plain diffusion. They can also be accommodated by models with, e.g., convection and/or reacceleration. There is no need for breaks in the source spectral indices below $\sim 1$ TeV/n. Fits on the primary fluxes alone do not provide physical constraints on the transport parameters. If we let free the source spectrum $dQ/dE = q \beta^{\eta_S} {\cal R}^{-\alpha}$ and fix the diffusion coefficient $K(R)= K_0\beta^{\eta_T} {\cal R}^{\delta}$ such as to reproduce the B/C ratio, the MCMC analysis constrains the source spectral index $\alpha$ to be in the range $2.2-2.5$ for all primary species up to Fe, regardless of the value of the diffusion slope $\delta$. The $\eta_S$ low-energy shape of the source spectrum is degenerate with the low-energy shape $\eta_T$ of the diffusion coefficient: we find $\eta_S-\eta_T\approx 0$ for p and He data, but $\eta_S-\eta_T\approx 1$ for C to Fe primary species. This is consistent with the toy-model calculation in which the shape of the p/He and C/O to Fe/O data is reproduced if $\eta_S-\eta_T\approx 0-1$ (no need for different slopes $\alpha$). The indirect detection of particle dark matter (DM) is based on the search for anomalous components in cosmic rays (CRs) due to the annihilation of DM pairs in the galactic halo, on the top of the standard astrophysical production. These additional exotic components are potentially detectable at Earth as spectral distortions for the various cosmic radiations: $\chi + \chi \to q \bar{q}, W^+ W^-, ... \to \bar{p}, \bar{D}, e^+ \gamma and \nu's $. Detection of the DM annihilation products has motivated the spectacular development of several new experimental techniques. They range from detectors on ballons or in space for the study of antimatter and gamma-rays, to large area cosmic-ray and gamma-ray detecors on the ground to neutrino telescopes underground for the study of the neutrino component. We analyse predictions of the CR lepton fluxes at the Earth of both secondary and primary origins, evaluate the theoretical uncertainties, and determine their level of consistency with respect to the available data. For propagation, we use a relativistic treatment of the energy losses for which we provide useful parameterizations. We compute the secondary components by improving on the method that we derived earlier for positrons. For primaries, we estimate the contributions from astrophysical sources (supernova remnants and pulsars) by considering all known local objects within 2 kpc and a smooth distribution beyond. We find that the electron flux in the energy range 5-30 GeV is well reproduced by a smooth distant distribution of sources with index $\gamma\sim 2.3-2.4$, while local sources dominate the flux at higher energy. For positrons, local pulsars have an important effect above 5-10 GeV. Uncertainties affecting the source modeling and propagation are degenerate and each translates into about one order of magnitude error in terms of local flux. The spectral shape at high energy is weakly correlated with the spectral indices of local sources, but more strongly with the hierarchy in their distance, age and power. Despite the large theoretical errors that we describe, our global and self-consistent analysis can explain all available data without over-tuning the parameters, and therefore without the need to consider any exotic physics. Though a \emph{standard paradigm} of Galactic CRs is well established, our results show that we can hardly talk about any \emph{standard model} of CR leptons, because of the very large theoretical uncertainties. The CDMS Collaboration has presented its results for the final exposure of the CDMS II experiment and reports that two candidate events for dark matter would survive after application of the various discrimination and subtraction procedures inherent in their analysis. We show that a population of relic neutralinos, which was already proved to fit the DAMA/LIBRA data on the annual modulation effect, could naturally explain the two candidate CDMS II events, if these are actually due to a dark matter signal., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

We confirm and extend the recent finding that the central surface density r_0*rho_0 galaxy dark matter halos, where r_0 and rho_0 are the halo core radius and central density, is nearly constant and independent of galaxy luminosity. Based on the co-added rotation curves of about 1000 spiral galaxies, mass models of individual dwarf irregular and spiral galaxies of late and early types with high-quality rotation curves and, galaxy-galaxy weak lensing signals from a sample of spiral and elliptical galaxies, we find that log(r_0*rho_0) = 2.15 +- 0.2, in units of log(Msol/pc^2). We also show that the observed kinematics of Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies are consistent with this value. Our results are obtained for galactic systems spanning over 14 magnitudes, belonging to different Hubble Types, and whose mass profiles have been determined by several independent methods. A new calculation of the $\bar{p}/p$ ratio in cosmic rays is compared to the recent PAMELA data. The good match up to 100 GeV allows to set constraints on exotic contributions from thermal WIMP dark matter candidates. We derive stringent limits on possible enhancements of the WIMP \pbar flux: a $m_{\rm WIMP}$=100 GeV (1 TeV) signal cannot be increased by more than a factor 6 (40) without overrunning PAMELA data. Annihilation through the $W^+W^-$ channel is also inspected and cross-checked with $e^+/(e^-+e^+)$ data. Secondary positrons are produced by spallation of cosmic rays within the interstellar gas. Measurements have been typically expressed in terms of the positron fraction, which exhibits an increase above 10 GeV. Many scenarios have been proposed to explain this feature, among them some additional primary positrons originating from dark matter annihilation in the Galaxy. The PAMELA satellite has provided high quality data that has enabled high accuracy statistical analyses to be made, showing that the increase in the positron fraction extends up to about 100 GeV. It is therefore of paramount importance to constrain theoretically the expected secondary positron flux to interpret the observations in an accurate way. We find the secondary positron flux to be reproduced well by the available observations, and to have theoretical uncertainties that we quantify to be as large as about one order of magnitude. We also discuss the positron fraction issue and find that our predictions may be consistent with the data taken before PAMELA. For PAMELA data, we find that an excess is probably present after considering uncertainties in the positron flux, although its amplitude depends strongly on the assumptions made in relation to the electron flux. By fitting the current electron data, we show that when considering a soft electron spectrum, the amplitude of the excess might be far lower than usually claimed. We provide fresh insights that may help to explain the positron data with or without new physical model ingredients. PAMELA observations and the forthcoming AMS-02 mission will allow stronger constraints to be aplaced on the cosmic--ray transport parameters, and are likely to reduce drastically the theoretical uncertainties., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. The most recent results from direct searches for dark matter particles in the galactic halo are examined in terms of an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model at the electroweak scale without gaugino masses unification. We show that the annual modulation effect at 8.2 $\sigma$ C.L. recently presented by the DAMA Collaboration, as the result of a combined analysis of the DAMA/NaI and the DAMA/LIBRA experiments for a total exposure of 0.82 ton yr, fits remarkably well with what expected for relic neutralinos for a wide variety of WIMP distribution functions. Bounds derivable from other measurements of direct searches for dark matter particles are analyzed. We stress the role played by the uncertainties affecting the neutralino--quark couplings arising from the involved hadronic quantities. We also examine how present data on cosmic antiprotons can help in constraining the neutralino configurations selected by the DAMA effect, in connection with the values of the astrophysical parameters. Perspectives for measurement of antideuterons possibly produced in the galactic halo by self--annihilation of neutralinos belonging to the DAMA configurations are examined. Two recent papers reconsider the possibility that the excess of microwave emission from a region within $\sim 20^0$ of the galactic center (the {\it WMAP haze}), measured by WMAP, can be due to the synchrotron emission originated by neutralino self-annihilation; on the basis of this possible occurrence, also upper bounds on the neutralino self-annihilation cross--section are suggested. In the present note, we show that in the common case of thermal WIMPs in a standard cosmological model, when the rescaling of the galactic WIMP density is duly taken into account for subdominant WIMPs, the upper bound applicable generically to {\it any} signal due to self-conjugate WIMPs is more stringent than the ones obtained from analysis of the WMAP haze. We also argue that an experimental upper bound, which can compete with our generic upper limit, can rather be derived from measurements of cosmic antiproton fluxes, for some values of the parameters of the astrophysical propagation model. Indirect detection signals from dark matter annihilation are studied in the positron channel. We discuss in detail the positron propagation inside the galactic medium: we present novel solutions of the diffusion and propagation equations and we focus on the determination of the astrophysical uncertainties which affect the positron dark matter signal. We find dark matter scenarios and propagation models that nicely fit existing data on the positron fraction. Finally, we present predictions both on the positron fraction and on the flux for already running or planned space experiments, concluding that they have the potential to discriminate a possible signal from the background and, in some cases, to distinguish among different astrophysical propagation models., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures. The DAMA Collaboration has recently analyzed its data of the extensive WIMP direct search (DAMA/NaI) which detected an annual modulation, by taking into account the channelling effect which occurs when an ion traverses a detector with a crystalline structure. Among possible implications, this Collaboration has considered the case of a coherent WIMP-nucleus interaction and then derived the form of the annual modulation region in the plane of the WIMP-nucleon cross section versus the WIMP mass, using a specific modelling for the channelling effect. In the present paper we first show that light neutralinos fit the annual modulation region also when channelling is taken into account. To discuss the connection with indirect signals consisting in galactic antimatter, in our analysis we pick up a specific galactic model, the cored isothermal-sphere. In this scheme we determine the sets of supersymmetric models selected by the annual modulation regions and then prove that these sets are compatible with the available data on galactic antiprotons. We comment on implications when other galactic distribution functions are employed. Finally, we show that future measurements on galactic antiprotons and antideuterons will be able to shed further light on the populations of light neutralinos singled out by the annual modulation data., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. The possibility to use $\gamma$--ray data from the Galactic Center (GC) to constrain the cosmological evolution of the Universe in a phase prior to primordial nucleosyntesis, namely around the time of cold dark matter (CDM) decoupling, is analyzed. The basic idea is that in a modified cosmological scenario, where the Hubble expansion rate is enhanced with respect to the standard case, the CDM decoupling is anticipated and the relic abundance of a given dark matter (DM) candidate enhanced. This implies that the present amount of CDM in the Universe may be explained by a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) which possesses annihilation cross section (much) larger than in standard cosmology. This enhanced annihilation implies larger fluxes of indirect detection signals of CDM. We show that the HESS measurements can set bounds for WIMPs heavier than a few hundreds of GeV, depending on the actual DM halo profile. These results are complementary to those obtained in a previous analysis based on cosmic antiprotons. For a Moore DM profile, $\gamma$--ray data limit the maximal Hubble rate enhancement to be below a factor of 100. Moreover, a WIMP heavier than 1 TeV is not compatible with a cosmological scenario with enhanced expansion rate prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). New upper bounds on direct detection rates have recently been presented by a number of experimental collaborations working on searches for WIMPs. In this paper we analyze how the constraints on relic neutralinos which can be derived from these results is affected by the uncertainties in the distribution function of WIMPs in the halo. Various different categories of velocity distribution functions are considered, and the ensuing implications for supersymmetric configurations derived. We analyze how the measurements of the low-energy spectrum of cosmic antiprotons can provide information on relic neutralinos. The analysis is focused on the light neutralinos which emerge in supersymmetric schemes where gaugino-mass unification is not assumed. We determine which ranges of the astrophysical parameters already imply stringent constraints on the supersymmetric configurations and those ranges which make the antiproton flux sensitive to the primary component generated by the neutralino self-annihilation. We discuss the potentials of several experimental configurations dedicated to direct measurements of charged cosmic ray (CR) nuclei at energies $\gsim$ 100 GeV/n. Within a two-zone propagation model for stable CRs, we calculate light primary and secondary nuclei fluxes for different diffusion and acceleration schemes. We show that the new detectors exploiting the long and ultra long duration balloon flights could determine the diffusion coefficient power index $\delta$ through the measurement of the boron-to-carbon ratio with an uncertainty of about 10-15 %, if systematic errors are low enough. Only space-based or satellite detectors will be able to determine $\delta$ with very high accuracy even in the case of important systematic errors, thanks to the higher energy reach and the less severe limitations in the exposure. We show that no uncertainties other than those on $\delta$ affect the determination of the acceleration slope $\alpha$, so that measures of light primary nuclei, such as the carbon one, performed with the same experiments, will provide valuable information on the acceleration mechanisms., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figs., Astropart. We investigate in detail the mass distribution obtained by means of high resolution rotation curves of 25 galaxies of different morphological types. The dark matter contribution to the circular rotation velocity is well-described by resorting to a dark component whose density shows an inner core, i.e. a central constant density region. We find a very strong correlation between the core radius size $R_C$ and the stellar exponential scale length $R_D$: $R_C \simeq 13 (\frac {R_D} {5 {\rm kpc}})^{1.05} {\rm kpc} $, and between $R_C$ and the galaxy dynamical mass at this distance, $M_{dyn}(R_C)$. These relationships would not be expected if the core radii were the product of an incorrect decomposition procedure, or the biased result of wrong or misunderstood observational data. We examine indirect signals produced by neutralino self-annihilations, in the galactic halo or inside celestial bodies, in the frame of an effective MSSM model without gaugino-mass unification at a grand unification scale. We compare our theoretical predictions with current experimental data of gamma-rays and antiprotons in space and of upgoing muons at neutrino telescopes. Results are presented for a wide range of the neutralino mass, though our discussions are focused on light neutralinos. We find that only the antiproton signal is potentially able to set constraints on very low-mass neutralinos, below 20 GeV. The gamma-ray signal, both from the galactic center and from high galactic latitudes, requires significantly steep profiles or substantial clumpiness in order to reach detectable levels. The up-going muon signal is largely below experimental sensitivities for the neutrino flux coming from the Sun; for the flux from the Earth an improvement of about one order of magnitude in experimental sensitivities (with a low energy threshold) can make accessible neutralino masses close to O, Si and Mg nuclei masses, for which resonant capture is operative., Comment: 17 pages, 1 tables and 5 figures, typeset with ReVTeX4. We calculate the antiproton flux due to relic neutralino annihilations, in a two-dimensional diffusion model compatible with stable and radioactive cosmic ray nuclei. We find that the uncertainty in the primary flux induced by the propagation parameters alone is about two orders of magnitude at low energies, and it is mainly determined by the lack of knowledge on the thickness of the diffusive halo. On the contrary, different dark matter density profiles do not significantly alter the flux: a NFW distribution produces fluxes which are at most 20% higher than an isothermal sphere. The most conservative choice for propagation parameters and dark matter distribution normalization, together with current data on cosmic antiprotons, cannot lead to any definitive constraint on the supersymmetric parameter space, neither in a low-energy effective MSSM, or in a minimal SUGRA scheme. However, if the best choice for propagation parameters - corresponding to a diffusive halo of L=4 kpc - is adopted, some supersymmetric configurations with the neutralino mass of about 100 GeV should be considered as excluded. In the frame of an effective MSSM model without gaugino-mass unification at a grand unification (GUT) scale, we set a lower bound on the neutralino mass based on the new WMAP data on $\Omega_{CDM}$. Our lower bound, $m_{\chi} \gsim 6$ GeV, leaves much room for relic neutralinos significantly lighter than those commonly considered ($m_{\chi} \gsim 50$ GeV). In most cosmological models, primordial black holes (PBHs) should have formed in the early Universe. Their Hawking evaporation into particles could eventually lead to the formation of antideuterium nuclei. This paper is devoted to a first computation of this antideuteron flux. The production of these antinuclei is studied with a simple coalescence scheme, and their propagation in the Galaxy is treated with a well-constrained diffusion model. We compare the resulting primary flux to the secondary background, due to the spallation of protons on the interstellar matter. Antideuterons are shown to be a very sensitive probe for primordial black holes in our Galaxy. Primordial black holes (PBHs) have motivated many studies since it was shown that they should evaporate and produce all kinds of particles. Recent experimental measurements of cosmic rays with great accuracy, theoretical investigations on the possible formation mechanisms and detailed evaporation processes have revived the interest in such astrophysical objects. This article aims at using the latest developments on antiproton propagation models together with new data from BESS, CAPRICE and AMS experiments to constrain the local amount of PBH dark matter. Depending on the diffusion halo parameters and on the details of emission mechanism, we derive an average upper limit of the order of rho < 1.7E-33 g cm^-3., Comment: Accepted by A&A . We discuss the implications of a new determination of the pion-nucleon sigma term for the evaluation of the neutralino-nucleon cross-section, and, in turn, for detection rates for relic neutralinos in WIMP direct experiments and in some of the indirect searches. It is shown that the new range for the pion-nucleon sigma term, taken at its face value, favours values of the neutralino-nucleon cross-sections which are sizeably larger than some of the current estimates. After a short introduction on particle candidates for dark matter within possible extensions of the standard model, we concentrate on Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, and on one of their most interesting physical realizations: the neutralino. We analyze how detectability of relic neutralinos by direct and indirect means is related to their local and cosmological densities; we use simple general arguments to discusss different scenarios where relic neutralinos make up the dominant bulk of dark matter or only a small fraction of it. Our general arguments are further corroborated by specific numerical results. We show to which extent the present experiments of direct searches for WIMPs, when interpreted in terms of relic neutralinos, probe interesting regions of the supersymmetric parameter space. Cosmic ray antiprotons provide an important probe for the study of the galactic Dark Matter, as they could be produced by exotic sources. On the other hand, antiprotons are anyway produced by standard nuclear reactions of cosmic ray nuclei on interstellar matter. This process is responsible for a background flux that must be carefully determined to estimate the detectability of an hypothetical exotic signal. Estimates of this background suffer from potential uncertainties of various origins. The propagation of cosmic antiprotons depends on several physical characteristics of the Galaxy which are poorly known. Antiprotons are created from cosmic protons and helium nuclei whose fluxes were not measured with great accuracy until very recently. Calculations of antiproton fluxes make use of nuclear physics models with their own shortcomings and uncertainties. The goal of this paper is to give a new evaluation of the cosmic antiproton flux along with the associated uncertainties. The propagation parameters were tightly constrained in Maurin et al. 2001 by an analysis of cosmic ray nuclei data in the framework of a two-zone diffusion model and we apply these parameters to the propagation of antiprotons. We use the recently published data on proton and helion fluxes, and we find that this particular source of uncertainty has become negligible. The Monte Carlo program DTUNUC was used to carefully examine nuclear reactions. We find that all the cosmic antiproton fluxes naturally coming out of the calculation are fully compatible with experimental data. Uncertainties in this flux have been strongly reduced. Cosmic ray nuclei fluxes are expected to be measured with high precision in the near future. For instance, high quality data on the antiproton component could give important clues about the nature of the astronomical dark matter. A very good understanding of the different aspects of cosmic ray propagation is therefore necessary. In this paper, we use cosmic ray nuclei data to give constraints on the diffusion parameters. Propagation is studied with semi-analytical solutions of a diffusion model, and we give new analytical solutions for radioactively produced species. Our model includes convection and reacceleration as well as the standard energy losses. We perform a $\chi^2$ analysis over B/C data for a large number of configurations obtained by varying the relevant parameters of the diffusion model. A very good agreement with B/C data arises for a number of configurations, all of which are compatible with sub-Fe/Fe data. Different source spectra $Q(E)$ and diffusion coefficients $K(E)$ have been tried, but for both parameters only one form gives a good fit. Another important result is that models without convection or without reacceleration are excluded. We find that the various parameters, i.e. the diffusion coefficient normalisation $K_0$ and spectral index $\delta$, the halo thickness $L$, the Alfv\'en velocity $V_a$, and the convection velocity $V_c$ are strongly correlated. We discuss to which extent the present experiments of direct search for WIMPs, when interpreted in terms of relic neutralinos, probe interesting regions of the supersymmetric parameter space, which are also being progressively explored at accelerators. Our analysis is performed in a number of different supersymmetric schemes. We derive the relevant neutralino cosmological properties, locally and on the average in the universe. We prove that part of the susy configurations probed by current WIMP experiments entail relic neutralinos of cosmological interest. The main astrophysical and particle physics uncertainties, relevant for a proper comparison between theory and experimental data, are stressed and taken into account., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, typeset with ReVTeX. In view of the latest LEP data we consider the effects of charginos and neutralinos on the two-photon and bbbar signatures of the Higgs at the LHC. Assuming the usual GUT inspired relation between M_1 and M_2 we show that there are only small regions with moderate tanbeta and large stop mixings that may be dangerous. Pathological models not excluded by LEP which have degeneracy between the sneutrino and the chargino are however a real danger because of large branching fraction of the Higgs into invisibles. We have also studied models where the gaugino masses are not unified at the GUT scale. We take M_1=M_2/10 as an example where large reductions in the signal at the LHC can occur. However we argue that such models with a very light neutralino LSP may give a too large relic density unless the sleptons are light. We then combine this cosmological constraint with neutralino production with light sfermions to further reduce the parameter space that precludes observability of the Higgs at the LHC. We still find regions of parameter space where the drops in the usual Higgs signals at the LHC can be drastic. Nonetheless, in such scenarios where Higgs may escape detection we show that one should be able to produce all charginos and neutralinos. We analyze the annual-modulation effect, measured by the DAMA Collaboration with the new implementation of a further two-years running, in the context of a possible interpretation in terms of relic neutralinos. We impose over the set of supersymmetric configurations, selected by the annual-modulation data, the constraints derived from WIMP indirect measurements, and discuss the features of the ensuing relic neutralinos. We discuss the effect induced on the neutralino-nucleon cross-section by the present uncertainties in the values of the quark masses and of the quark scalar densities in the nucleon. We examine the implications of this aspect on the determination of the neutralino cosmological properties, as derived from measurements of WIMP direct detection. We show that, within current theoretical uncertainties, the DAMA annual modulation data are compatible with a neutralino as a major dark matter component, to an extent which is even larger than the one previously derived. Once the energy spectrum of the secondary component is well understood, measurements of the antiproton cosmic-ray flux at the Earth will be a powerful way to indirectly probe for the existence of supersymmetric relics in the galactic halo. Unfortunately, it is still spoilt by considerable theoretical uncertainties. As shown in this work, searches for low-energy antideuterons appear in the mean time as a plausible alternative, worth being explored. Above a few GeV/n, a dozen spallation antideuterons should be collected by the future AMS experiment on board ISSA. For energies less than about 3 GeV/n, the antideuteron spallation component becomes negligible and may be supplanted by a potential supersymmetric signal. If a few low-energy antideuterons are discovered, this should be seriously taken as a clue for the existence of massive neutralinos in the Milky Way., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The original annual-modulation region, singled out by the DAMA/NaI experiment for direct detection of WIMPs, is extended by taking into account the uncertainties in the galactic astrophysical velocities. Also the effect due to a possible bulk rotation for the dark matter halo is considered. We find that the range for the WIMP mass becomes 30 GeV < m_chi < 130 GeV at 1-sigma C.L. with a further extension in the upper bound, when a possible bulk rotation of the dark matter halo is taken into account. We show that the DAMA results, when interpreted in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, are consistent with a relic neutralino as a dominant component of cold dark matter (on the average in our universe and in our galactic halo).
