Introducing artificial intelligence techniques in agriculture offers new opportunities for improving crop management, such as in coffee plantations, which constitute a complex agroforestry environment. This paper presents a comparative study of three deep learning frameworks: Deep Forest, RT-DETR, and Yolov9, customized for coffee plant detection and trained from images with a high spatial resolution (cm/pix). Each frame had dimensions of 640 × 640 pixels acquired from passive RGB sensors onboard a UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) system. The image set was structured and consolidated from UAS-RGB imagery acquisition in six locations along the Central Valley, Costa Rica, through automated photogrammetric missions. It was evidenced that the RT-DETR and Yolov9 frameworks allowed adequate generalization and detection with mAP50 values higher than 90% and mAP5095 higher than 54%, in scenarios of application with data augmentation techniques. Deep Forest also achieved good metrics, but noticeably lower when compared to the other frameworks. RT-DETR and Yolov9 were able to generalize and detect coffee plants in unseen scenarios that include complex forest structures within tropical agroforestry Systems (AFS).

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest malignancies in humans and it is expected to play a bigger part in cancer burden in the years to come. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) represents 85% of all primary pancreatic malignancies. Recently, much attention has been given to PDAC, with significant advances in the understanding of the mechanisms underpinning disease initiation and progression, along with noticeable improvements in overall survival in both localized and metastatic settings. However, given their rarity, rare histological subtypes of pancreatic cancer have been underappreciated and are frequently treated as PDAC, even though they might present non-overlapping molecular alterations and clinical behavior. While some of these rare histological subtypes are true variants of PDAC that should be treated likewise, others represent separate clinicopathological entities, warranting a different therapeutic approach. In this review, we highlight clinical, pathological, and molecular aspects of rare histological types of pancreatic cancer, along with the currently available data to guide treatment decisions.

The outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic triggered European countries’ response at the beginning of 2020. The global crisis was managed through different emergency measures, and in so many ways that the EU, as a supranational political body, did not follow a common approach when dealing with member states. What was the role played by the EU during the pandemic crisis? And how did the EU institutions try to legitimate their action? The aim of this paper is to answer these questions through an interdisciplinary investigation on the EU communication campaign on Corona virus targeted to European citizens, in order to unveil the ideological frames behind European actions. Results show that EU discourse on the Covid-19 crisis reveals the interests and the goals of a global business player, rather than an independent political actor.

Abstract Background Fabry disease (FD) is a rare X‐linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by variants in GLA gene leading to deficient α‐galactosidase A enzyme activity. This deficiency leads to the accumulation of glycosphingolipids, particularly globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), in various tissues and organs, which can result in life‐threatening complications. The clinical presentation of the disease can vary from the “classic” phenotype with pediatric onset and multi‐organ involvement to the “later‐onset” phenotype, which presents with predominantly cardiac symptoms. In recent years, advances in screening studies have led to the identification of an increasing number of variants of unknown significance that have not yet been described, and whose pathogenic role remains undetermined. Methods In this clinical report, we describe the case of an asymptomatic adult female who was found to have a new variant of unknown significance, p.Met70Val. Given the unknown pathogenic role of this variant, a thorough analysis of the potential organ involvement was conducted. The clinical data were analyzed retrospectively. Results The analysis revealed that there were no signs of significant organ involvement, and the benignity of the variant was confirmed. Conclusion This case underscores the importance of a comprehensive evaluation of new variants of unknown significance to establish their pathogenicity accurately.

PbTe and PbSe are among the most promising thermoelectric materials used in the mid-temperature (400–900 K) power generation range. In these materials the efficiency increase in thermoelectric performance is critically related to the lowering of lattice thermal conductivity (κL), without compromising the electronic power factor. By means of state-of-the-art equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD), we investigate heat transport in several nanostructured PbTe/PbSe models as a function of material morphology. Layered composites show a reduction of the average κL of about 35 % with respect to the bulk. The insertion of PbSe nanoparticles into a PbTe matrix, or viceversa PbTe into PbSe reduces κL by up to 45 % while in more anisotropic nanocomposites the reduction exceeds PbSe/PbTe alloys. Layered composites show the lowest lattice thermal conductivity in the direction of layer stacking, for which an optimal thickness is identified. Along this line we provide a full account of the impact of alloying and (sub)nanostructuring on heat transport for this important class of materials. Particularly anisotropic nano-dot morphologies and layered (sub)nanocomposites emerge as a paradigm for outstanding thermoelectric materials.

Background: The International Study of Wheezing in Infants defines recurrent wheezing as the presence of three or more medically documented episodes of wheezing within one year. To date, there is no evidence on the use of hypertonic saline (HS) combined with airway clearance techniques (ACT) for children with recurrent wheezing treated in an outpatient setting. Therefore, this is the first study to explore the use of such interventions in infants with recurrent wheezing. Objectives: To evaluate the effects and safety of a three-month protocol including HS and ACT for non-hospitalized infants with recurrent wheezing. Methods: Randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, including outpatient infants with recurrent wheezing. Children were randomized to either 3% HS or 0.9% saline groups and were treated with bronchodilator and nebulized with the respective solutions before ACT. The primary outcome was the Wang score. Secondary outcomes included the number of hospitalizations and respiratory crisis, need for rescue medication, and school absences. All variables were measured during the three previous months from inclusion and during intervention period. The study protocol was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04331496) on March, 31, 2020. Results: Forty children were included. Regarding immediate effects, significant differences ([Formula: see text]) were found for time, but not for group or interaction (group × time), in all outcome variables (increase in SpO2, decrease in heart and respiratory rate, wheezing episodes, retraction, and Wang score). Comparing the previous three months with the study period, there were significant differences in both groups for the severity of crisis ([Formula: see text]) and medication steps ([Formula: see text]). Conclusion: A three-month protocol including HS and ACT for outpatient infants with recurrent wheezing was safe and reduced morbidity. No differences were found between the use of HS and 0.9% saline.

With the increasing focus on irrigation management, it is crucial to consider cost-effective alternatives for soil water monitoring, such as multi-point monitoring with low-cost soil moisture sensors. This study assesses the accuracy and functionality of low-cost sensors in a sandy loam (SL) soil amended with biochar at rates of 15.6 and 31.2 tons/ha by calibrating the sensors in the presence of two nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) commercial fertilizers at three salinity levels (non/slightly/moderately) and six soil water contents. Sensors were calibrated across nine SL-soil combinations with biochar and N and K fertilizers, counting for 21 treatments. The best fit for soil water content calibration was obtained using polynomial equations, demonstrating reliability with R2 values greater than 0.98 for each case. After a second calibration, low-cost soil moisture sensors provide acceptable results concerning previous calibration, especially for non- and slightly saline treatments and at soil moisture levels lower than 0.17 cm3cm−3. The results showed that at low frequencies, biochar and salinity increase the capacitance detected by the sensors, with calibration curves deviating up to 30% from the control sandy loam soil. Due to changes in the physical and chemical properties of soil resulting from biochar amendments and the conductive properties influenced by fertilization practices, it is required to conduct specific and continuous calibrations of soil water content sensor, leading to better agricultural management decisions.

Photochemical reactions of contaminants in snow and ice can be important sinks for organic and inorganic compounds deposited onto snow from the atmosphere and sources for photoproducts released from snowpacks into the atmosphere. Snow contaminants can be found in the bulk ice matrix, in internal liquid-like regions (LLRs), or in quasi-liquid layers (QLLs) at the air-ice interface, where they can readily exchange with the firn air. Some studies have reported that direct photochemical reactions occur faster in LLRs and QLLs than in aqueous solution, while others have found similar rates. Here, we measure the photodegradation rate constants for loss of the three dimethoxybenzene isomers under varying experimental conditions, including in aqueous solution, in LLRs, and at the air-ice interface of nature-identical snow. Relative to aqueous solution, we find modest photodegradation enhancements (3- and 6-fold) in LLRs for two of the isomers and larger enhancements (15- to 30-fold) at the air-ice interface for all three isomers. We use computational modeling to assess the impact of light absorbance changes on photodegradation rate enhancements at the interface. We find small (2-5gnm) bathochromic (red) absorbance shifts at the interface relative to in solution, which increases light absorption, but this factor only accounts for less than 50g% of the measured rate constant enhancements. The major factor responsible for photodegradation rate enhancements at the air-ice interface appears to be more efficient photodecay: estimated dimethoxybenzene quantum yields are 6- to 24-fold larger at the interface compared to in aqueous solution and account for the majority (51g%-96g%) of the observed enhancements. Using a hypothetical model compound with an assumed Gaussian-shaped absorbance peak, we find that a shift in the peak to higher or lower wavelengths can have a minor to substantial impact on photodecay rate constants, depending on the original location of the peak and the magnitude of the shift. Changes in other peak properties at the air-ice interface, such as peak width and height (i.e., molar absorption coefficient), can also impact rates of light absorption and direct photodecay. Our results suggest our current understanding of photodegradation processes underestimates the rate at which some compounds are broken down, as well as the release of photoproducts into the atmosphere.

Sarcoptic mange epidemics can devastate wildlife populations. In 2014, mange was first detected in vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) and guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in San Guillermo National Park (SGNP), Argentina. This study describes the temporal dynamics of the outbreak, its effects on the park's wild camelid populations between 2017-2019, and investigates the potential source of the epidemic. From May 2017 to June 2018, transect surveys indicated a sharp decrease in the density of living vicuñas and guanacos by 68% and 77%, respectively. By April 2019 no vicuñas or guanacos were recorded on transect surveys, suggesting their near-extinction in the park. Clinical signs consistent with mange (e.g., intense scratching, hyperkeratosis, alopecia) were observed in 24% of living vicuñas (n = 478) and 33% of living guanacos (n = 12) during surveys, as well as in 94% of vicuña carcasses (n = 124) and 85% of guanaco carcasses (n = 20) examined. Sarcoptes scabiei was identified as the causal agent by skin scrapings, and the cutaneous lesions were characterized by histopathology (n = 15). Genetic characterization revealed that mites recovered from seven vicuñas (n = 13) and three guanacos (n = 11) shared the same genotype, which is consistent with a single source and recent origin of the epidemic. Tracing the potential source, we identified a governmental livestock incentive program which introduced llamas (Lama glama) in areas adjacent to SGNP in 2009, some of which had alopecic scaling consistent with sarcoptic mange. Though at the time of our study no llamas with mange were available for confirmatory sampling, we hypothesize that the introduction of mange-infected llamas may have triggered the outbreak in wild camelids. This unprecedented event in SGNP had devastating effects on dominating herbivores with potentially profound cascading effects at the community and ecosystem levels.

The first arsenic-based clathrate exhibiting superstructural ordering due to optimization of Au-As, As-As, and Ba-Au bonding is reported. Ba8Au16As30 crystallizes in a unique P21/c monoclinic clathrate structure. The synthesis, crystal and electronic structure, and transport properties are discussed.

Crystals with complicated geometry are often observed with mixed chemical occupancy among Wyckoff sites, presenting a unique challenge for accurate atomic modeling. Similar systems possessing exact occupancy on all the sites can exhibit superstructural ordering, dramatically inflating the unit cell size. In this work, a crystal graph convolutional neural network (CGCNN) is used to predict optimal atomic decorations on fixed crystalline geometries. This is achieved with a site permutation search (SPS) optimization algorithm based on Monte Carlo moves combined with simulated annealing and basin-hopping techniques. Our approach relies on the evidence that, for a given chemical composition, a CGCNN estimates the correct energetic ordering of different atomic decorations, as predicted by electronic structure calculations. This provides a suitable energy landscape that can be optimized according to site occupation, allowing the prediction of chemical decoration in crystals exhibiting mixed or disordered occupancy, or superstructural ordering. Verification of the procedure is carried out on several known compounds, including the superstructurally ordered clathrate compound Rb8Ga27Sb16 and vacancy-ordered perovskite Cs2SnI6, neither of which was previously seen during the neural network training. In addition, the critical temperature of an order–disorder phase transition in solid solution CuZn is probed with our SPS routines by sampling site configuration trajectories in the canonical ensemble. This strategy provides an accurate method for determining favorable decoration in complex crystals and analyzing site occupation at unprecedented speed and scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solid solutions of Yb2-xAxCdSb2 (A = Ca, Sr, Eu; x ≤ 1) are of interest for their promising thermoelectric (TE) properties. Of these solid solutions, Yb2-xCaxCdSb2 has end members with different crystal structures. Yb2CdSb2 crystallizes in the polar space group Cmc21, whereas Ca2CdSb2 crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group Pnma. Other solid solutions, Yb2-xAxCdSb2 (A = Sr, Eu), crystallize in the polar space group for x ≤ 1, and compositions with x ≥ 1 have not been reported. Both structure types are composed of corner-sharing CdSb4 tetrahedra condensed into sheets that differ by the stacking of the layers. Single crystals of the solid solution Yb2-xCaxCdSb2 (x = 0-1) were studied to elucidate the structural transition between the Yb2CdSb2 and Ca2CdSb2 structure types. For x ≤ 1, the structures remain in the polar space group Cmc21. As the Ca content is increased, a positional disorder arises in the intralayer cation sites (Yb2/Ca2) and the Cd site, resulting in inversion of the CdSb4 tetrahedral chain. This phenomenon could be indicative of an intergrowth of the opposing space group. The TE properties of polycrystalline samples of Yb2-xCaxCdSb2 (x ≤ 1) were measured from 300 to 525 K. The lattice thermal conductivity is extremely low (0.3-0.4 W/m·K) and the Seebeck coefficients are high (100-180 μV/K) across the temperature range. First-principles calculations show a minimum in the thermal conductivity for the x = 0.3 composition, in good agreement with experimental data. The low thermal conductivity stems from the acoustic branches being confined to low frequencies and a large number of phonon scattering channels provided by the localized optical branches. The TE quality factor of the Yb1.7A0.3CdSb2 (A = Ca, Sr, Eu) series has been calculated and predicts that the A = Ca and Sr solid solutions may not improve with carrier concentration optimization but that the Eu series is worthy of additional modifications. Overall, the x = 0.3 compositions provide the highest zT because they provide the best electronic properties with the lowest thermal conductivity.

Water is one of the most important, yet least understood, liquids in nature. Many anomalous properties of liquid water originate from its well-connected hydrogen bond network1, including unusually efficient vibrational energy redistribution and relaxation2. An accurate description of the ultrafast vibrational motion of water molecules is essential for understanding the nature of hydrogen bonds and many solution-phase chemical reactions. Most existing knowledge of vibrational relaxation in water is built upon ultrafast spectroscopy experiments2-7. However, these experiments cannot directly resolve the motion of the atomic positions and require difficult translation of spectral dynamics into hydrogen bond dynamics. Here, we measure the ultrafast structural response to the excitation of the OH stretching vibration in liquid water with femtosecond temporal and atomic spatial resolution using liquid ultrafast electron scattering. We observed a transient hydrogen bond contraction of roughly 0.04 Å on a timescale of 80 femtoseconds, followed by a thermalization on a timescale of approximately 1 picosecond. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the need to treat the distribution of the shared proton in the hydrogen bond quantum mechanically to capture the structural dynamics on femtosecond timescales. Our experiment and simulations unveil the intermolecular character of the water vibration preceding the relaxation of the OH stretch.

Abstract Aims Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is an under‐diagnosed cause of heart failure (HF) and has a worse prognosis than other forms of HF. The frequency of death or rehospitalization following discharge for acute heart failure (AHF) in CA (relative to other causes) has not been documented. The study aims to compare hospital readmission and death rates 90 days after discharge for AHF in patients with vs. without CA and to identify risk factors associated with these events in each group. Methods and results Patients with HF and CA (HF + CA+) were recruited from the ICREX cohort, after screening of their medical records. The cases were matched 1:5 by sex and age with control HF patients without CA (HF + CA−). There were 27 HF + CA + and 135 HF + CA− patients from the ICREX cohort included in the study. Relative to the HF + CA− group, HF + CA+ patients had a higher heart rate (P = 0.002) and N‐terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide levels (P
