[1] The study of fabric development and juvenile batholith emplacement across the tilted crustal section of the Eastern Dharwar craton shows that horizontal, constrictional deformation affected large volumes of the midcrust and lower crust at the time of regional partial melting and magmatic accretion. Constriction is achieved by a combination of coeval shallow and steep planar fabrics sharing a common horizontal elongation direction, two sets of conjugate strike-slip shears, and extensional shear zones. The Eastern Dharwar craton illustrates an end-member deformation mode by which a particularly weakened lithosphere responds to shortening by developing distributed, horizontal plane strain on a crustal scale, resulting from the combination of crustal shortening and lateral gravity-driven flow. Thinning accompanying constrictional deformation is interpreted as compensating for juvenile magmatic accretion and thickening of greenstone belts and as acting to maintain a stable crustal thickness. Such a midcrustal to lower crustal deformation process may provide a resolution of the batholithic room problem in a softened crust submitted to lateral shortening and may explain nearly isobaric retrograde pressure-temperature-time paths of high temperature–low pressure high-grade terrains.

Reflection seismic profiles acquired from the outer shelf to the lagoon along the northeastern margin of the New Caledonia Ridge constrain the main events that punctuated its development since the mid-Miocene. These are: (i) Late Miocene extensional faulting that disrupted an Early–Mid-Miocene clastic wedge and its lateritic abandonment surface; (ii) fluvial erosion of the collapsed distal part of the wedge before its burial under an aggradational fluvial-deltaic sequence abandoned in the Early(?) Pliocene; (iii) deposition of a transgressive carbonate sequence on the top of the low-level Early Pliocene fluvial-deltaic sedimentary system and (iv) Late(?) Pliocene–Quaternary sea-level rise and aggradation of a 250- to 450-m-thick carbonate platform topped by the barrier reef. The results also confirm that the floor of the northeastern lagoon records two successive incision/aggradation cycles related to recent (the last two?) glacial/interglacial eustatic stages.

International audience; In seismic hazard assessment studies, near-surface geophysical prospecting is increasingly used to help in identifying active faults and to constrain seismic deformation parameters (fault offset, recurrence...). In the current study, electrical tomography was used (1) to locate the Trévaresse slow reverse fault (Provence, SE France), the source of the most important seismic event recorded in the 20th century in France and (2) to test electrical tomography's ability to detect faults and tectonic deformation in a complex geological environment. Our study is supported by a detailed geologic and geomorphic field study. In the investigated area, where the geology is made of a succession of folded marl and limestone layers, electrical images are strongly influenced by electrical macro-anisotropy which plays a critical role in this survey, depending on the investigation scale. When resolution (i.e. the smallest target that can be resolved) is larger than the layer thickness (at depth and/or for large electrode spacing), inversion is unable to retrieve the real structure. To successfully interpret these electrical images, in terms of tectonically induced dip variations, we constrain field data interpretation by comparing measured and inverted electrical data with synthetic modelling results and geological data. The synthetic models were hypothetical coarse geological structures determined on the basis of geological/geomorphologic information (e.g. outcropping layers). For shallow depths, when the resolution is smaller or equal to the anisotropy scale, an electrical tomogram yields straightforward interpretation of the subsurface structure. Coupled with numerical modelling, electrical results successfully helped in positioning a trench for fault characterization.

The NW trending Zagros fold-and-thrust belt is affected by two major dextral faults: (1) the NW trending Main Recent Fault that accommodates partitioning of oblique convergence at the rear of the western Zagros and (2) the north trending Kazerun Fault located in the central Zagros. Combined structural and fault kinematics studies and SPOT images analysis have shown a Pliocene kinematic change accompanied by a fault pattern reorganization, which has led to a modification in the accommodation of oblique convergence. Since the late Pliocene, the distributed transpressional deformation operating at the rear of the belt has become partitioned along the newly formed Main Recent Fault. This fault cuts through early Pliocene nappes and transpressional structures by right-laterally reactivating high-angle thrusts. The southeastern termination of the Main Recent Fault connects to the northern termination of Kazerun Fault that consists of three fault zones that end in bent, orogen-parallel splay thrust faults. The Kazerun Fault, together with a series of north to NNW trending inherited basement strike-slip faults, define an orogen-scale fan-shaped fault pattern pointing toward the Main Recent Fault-Kazerun Fault junction. This structural pattern allows slip from along the Main Recent Fault to become distributed by transfer to the longitudinal thrust faults and folds of the Zagros belt, with the fan-shaped fault pattern acting as a horse-tail termination of the Main Recent Fault.

A020 GEOPHYSICAL INVESTIGATION OF SLOW ACTIVE FAULTS IN THE PROVENCE AREA (FRANCE) Introduction 1 In regions of low to moderate seismic activity such as Western Europe seismic hazard assessment often requires careful studies of active faults that have very long recurrence intervals and tenuous morphological expressions due to substantial erosion rates vegetation coverage and human activity (Peulvast et al. 1999). Moreover most of Western Europe is characterized by a relatively high seismic risk due to the concentration of human and material properties presenting high-vulnerability. Consequently detecting tectonic structures that may lead to destructive earthquakes (i.e. Basel 1356; Verviers 1692; Lambesc

[1] We describe the crustal structure of the Coast Mountains batholith between 54° and 55°N, within the Canadian Cordillera, with emphasis on emplacement of the 7 km thick Kasiks sill complex (KSC). Kinematic patterns that developed during emplacement of the KSC are the result of interactions between magma transport, magma accumulation and regional deformation. The sills were emplaced during NW directed normal shearing and flattening of country rocks that host the KSC. A ∼2 km thick shallowly NE dipping mylonite zone cuts the eastern side of the KSC. Kinematic indicators within the mylonite zone record top to the east normal displacements. Structural analysis shows that mylonite formation occurred during subvertical shortening and east-northeast, subhorizontal extension. U/Pb zircon age dates show that ENE directed normal shearing along the eastern side of the KSC and WNW directed normal shearing within the KSC occurred contemporaneously between ∼54 and 51 Ma, indicating strong strain partitioning between the mylonite and the KSC. This pattern of strain partitioning is interpreted to have been driven by return flow of melt-laden crust in response to tectonic denudation of the upper crust. Seismic profiling shows that many of these structures extend to mid and lower crustal depths. Comparison of our results with other regions within the Canadian Cordillera indicates that orogen-scale right-lateral strike-slip faults deformed synchronously with wide spread magmatism and formation of extensional gneiss domes. Thus the crustal structure of the Coast Mountains batholith was the result of early Tertiary batholith construction during dextral oblique convergence and synorogenic collapse.

Decreasing water table and pollution are critical problems in effective groundwater management in the Netherlands. In order to develop effective control measures to address these problems, water management scenarios need to be simulated in a groundwater model. The ice-pushed ridges of the Veluwe area are one of the main groundwater reservoirs in the Netherlands.

We have identified surface ruptures of M ≥ 6 earthquakes on a branch of the propagating reverse fault system that produced the strongest event recorded in France during the twentieth century (1909 Lambesc earthquake, Provence). The rate of slip on that branch is 0.05–0.3 mm/yr with a corresponding return period for M ≥ 6 events of 700–5000 yr. In addition to possibly identifying the 1909 earthquake surface rupture, by recognizing successive surface breaks of large earthquakes, this study calls for a reassessment of seismic hazard in Provence.

[1] The structural study of the Kolar greenstone belt and surrounding granite-gneiss terrains combined with U-Pb dating reveals that the middle and lower crustal tectonoplutonic pattern of the eastern Dharwar craton developed during a major magmatic accretion event between 2550 and 2530 Ma. The granite-greenstone pattern resulted from the interference of gravity-driven sagging of the greenstones (i.e., diapirism), E-W bulk inhomogeneous shortening combined with horizontal N-S stretching, and syntectonic juvenile pluton emplacement. Bulk inhomogeneous contraction is accommodated by the synchronous development of a pervasive, N-S trending vertical foliation, shallow stretching lineation, and conjugate strike-slip shear zone pattern within and outside the greenstone belt, resulting in regional horizontal pure shear deformation. The plutons around the greenstone belt record regional contraction by developing one set of strike-slip C-S fabrics of the shear zone pattern. The development of the granite-greenstone pattern was coeval and compatible with deformation during juvenile magmatic accretion, melting, and granulite metamorphism in the lower crust. The Kolar example points to a specific crustal rheology that allowed sagduction of the greenstones and regional distributed bulk inhomogeneous strain, due to mechanical homogeneity and low viscosity provided by large-scale melting during the accretion event. This example further suggests specific boundary conditions to the craton that allowed E-W inhomogeneous shortening to be accommodated by N-S stretching and spreading of the crust without significant tectonic thickening. Such tectonoplutonic pattern is specific to the Archean and may develop as a consequence of mantle plume activity in intracontinental settings.

Measurements of absorption on optical fibers has been carried out using the photoacoustic effect which allowed the splitting between absorption and scattering. A comparison with a photothermal method has been performed, which points out the accuracy of the results.

Both the absorption coefficient and the thermal diffusivity of an optical fiber have been measured using photothermal methods: photoacoustics (P.A.) and photothermal deflection (P.D.). The amplitude of the photothermal signal is proportional to the heat density generated in the fiber core. This in turn is proportional to the light absorption coefficient β. Thus, these techniques allow one to separate the absorption and Rayleigh scattering losses. The results obtained by the two methods are in agreement. A threshold value of 10 dB km−1 mW has been determined experimentally. In both cases, the device is calibrated by replacing the fiber with a heated electric wire. Moreover, the heat must diffuse from the core to the gas so that when the light is modulated, a phase delay appears. A study of phase delay versus modulation frequency gives the thermal diffusivity of the fiber. This is required in order to improve fiber sensors.Theoretically, the cylindrical geometry of the sample permits simple calculations. The thermoelastic equations in solids and coupled thermodynamic ones in the gas have been solved without neglecting viscosity effects. Noting that silica is almost unexpansible, an algebraic expression of the signal has been obtained without any assumptions on the gas transformation processes. Finally, the P.A. and P.D. techniques are compared and some extensions are presented.

We report the first measurement of the thermal diffusivity of an optical fiber using a photoacoustic (PA) technique. The absorption of a modulated light in the fiber core induces heat which diffuses through the optical cladding. The phase delay connected with the PA signal is directly related to the thermal diffusivity χ. We have obtained χ = 1.21×10−7±0.03 m2/s for a standard fiber. Although this value is smaller than the bulk diffusivity of ordinary glasses it has been measured on the real sample which is a drawn material.

This thesis is a part of "Source to Sink Guyana" project supported by TOTAL and BRGM. Its objective was to establish bases for a Source to Sink study of the Guiana Shield, by studying the geo-dynamic evolution of its passive margin since 200 Ma. These objectives were acquired after seismic data interpretation, crustal cross-sections and paleogeographic maps constructions and terrigeneous accumulation history quantification of the margin. The passive margin of the Guiana Shield is composed of two basins: Guiana/Suriname (GS) and Foz d'Amazonas (FOZ), derived from a Jurassic then Lower Cretaceous diachronous rifting respectively. The study of the subsurface data allowed us to show that the superimposition of the two rifts has shaped the Demerara Shelf into a continental block, thinned twice and surrounded by oceanic crust on three sides. The more oblique rifting of the FOZ basin forms systematically narrower segments and finer syn-rift deposits than in the GS basin. The paleo-geographic evolution of the margin and terrigenous accumulation, over eight intervals of time (from 200 Ma), show a different evolution of the two basins. The lithological distribution of sedimentary systems is homogenized from the Campanian, when both basins reach the late-post-rift stage, during which the distribution is mainly controlled by continental river dynamics. Terrestrial accumulated volumes show however an opposite evolution during Cretaceous in both basins, in connection with the decrease and increase in the drained areas of the major rivers of this region, Paleo-Berbice and Paleo-Tocantins respectively. Siliclastic inputs towards the margin are generally low (between 2 and 11 m/Ma), but alternating with periods of high inputs corresponding to the recreation of the relief on the continent.; Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet "Source to Sink Guyane" de TOTAL et BRGM. We present a qualitative and quantitative structural study of the Paleozoic basement of the Pyrenees. Based on new observations and an extensive compilation of structural data that were harmonized at the scale of the orogen, we built the regional-scale Variscan strain field. The main Variscan deformation was partitioned between transpressional thickening of the upper crust and the laterally flowing lower crust. An attachment zone acted to maintain the kinematic coherency between these two structural domains. Lateral flow of the lower crust accompanied emplacement of syn-convergence extensional domes. Regional cooling progressively increases the degree of mechanical coupling between the two structural levels and enhanced strain localization in steep regional transpressive shear zones. Though part of the foreland of the Variscan orogen the Pyrenees developed strain patterns typical of hot crusts/lithospheres. Such a hot thermal context is due to lithospheric mantle delamination that initiated beneath the hinterland of the orogen and allowed the Iberian-Armorican syntax to close and extrude the soft Pyrenean crust trapped in it. Geostatistical analysis of the strain field suggests that it results bulk pure shear deformation with a dextral transpressional component restricted to the boundaries of plutons and domes. Emplacement of such structural objects governed the degree of heterogeneity of the strain field. The coherency of the strain field argues against the stacking of large basement nappes in the Axial Zone of the Pyrenees during building of the orogenic prism since the Late Cretaceous. Only the southern and western parts of the Axial Zone are affected by “Alpine” thrusting and only minor local reactivation occurred elsewhere in the Axial Zone. Therefore, the Nogueres thrust cannot root into the Axial Zone but is a decollement within Late Paleozoic series. This suggests a lower amount of Alpine shortening in this part of the Pyrenees than previously estimated.; Cette thèse présente une étude structurale qualitative et quantitative du socle paléozoïque des Pyrénées. Elle se base sur une étude de terrain et une compilation exhaustive et inédite des structures, harmonisées à l’échelle de toute la chaîne des Pyrénées. A partir de cette base de données, nous avons construit le champ de déformation régional varisque produit au Paléozoïque supérieur (310-295 Ma). On montre que lors du raccourcissement régional majeur, la déformation est partitionnée entre une croûte supérieure s’épaississant en régime transpressif et une croûte inférieure fluant latéralement. Une zone d’ « attachement » a permis de maintenir la cohérence cinématique entre ces deux domaines aux comportements structuraux contrastés. Le fluage latéral au sein de la croûte inférieure permet l’emplacement de dômes extensifs dans ce contexte convergent. Le refroidissement progressif de la croûte favorise i) le couplage mécanique progressif entre ces deux domaines et ii) une localisation de la déformation dans des zones de cisaillement transpressives verticales d’échelle crustale. Bien que situées dans l’avant-pays de la chaîne varisque, les Pyrénées enregistrent une déformation typique d’une lithosphère anormalement chaude. Ce contexte thermique est l’expression d’une délamination progressive du manteau lithosphérique initiée dans les zones internes de l’orogène et qui a permis la fermeture de la syntaxe ibéro-armoricaine ainsi que l’échappement latéral de la croûte ductile pyrénéenne pris dans cette syntaxe. L’analyse quantitative du champ de déformation à partir d’outils géostatistiques montre que ce champ résulte d’une déformation assimilable à un cisaillement pur produit par un raccourcissement NS tandis que la composante dextre de la transpression se concentre aux bordures de plutons ou de dômes. Ainsi, la mise en place de ces objets structuraux gouverne l’hétérogénéité du champ de déformation. La cohérence du champ de déformation varisque met en question l’existence de nappes de socle lors de la construction du prisme orogénique pyrénéen à partir du Crétacé supérieur. En dehors de la bordure ouest et sud de la Zone Axiale, le socle n’est affecté que par des réactivations mineures, y compris dans les Pyrénées centrales où le chevauchement de Nogueres ne peut être enraciné. Ce chevauchement correspondrait plutôt à un décollement dans les séries paléozoïques supérieures, impliquant des quantités de raccourcissement moindres durant la collision pyrénéenne que celles calculées précédemment.

This PhD thesis presents the first source-to-sink study of the African Atlantic Equatorial margin. We established new Meso-Cenozoic paleogeographic and structural reconstructions, integrating the West African sub-continent and the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, based on a new mapping method defining both erosion limits of preserved deposits and their minimum original extension. We show the evolution over 200 Myrs of the eroding (sources) and accumulating domains (sinks) at continental scale. We demonstrate in particular that during the Cretaceous, a large Saharan intracratonic basin was exporting sediments toward both the Tethys and the future Atlantic Equatorial Ocean. The fragmentation of this basin occurred in the Oligocene, by the growth of the Hoggar swell that isolated the present-day small residual depot-centers. The development of this specific “basin and swell” topography results from the superimposition of various deformation wavelength at continental scale combining a marginal upwarp along the equatorial margin and a hot spot swell.We then characterized, from the interpretation of seismic data and well logs, the segmentation of the Equatorial Atlantic passive margin and the stratigraphic architecture of the post-rift Upper Cretaceous sedimentary wedge. We show that the proximal parts of the Late Cretaceous sedimentary wedge are only preserved along divergent segments of the margin and not along transform segments. We interpret this differential preservation as the result of a greater uplift, during the early post-rift, in the proximal parts of the transform segments preventing the preservation of the proximal terms of the sedimentary systems. The transform segments are associated with narrow necking zone, resulting in greater flexural uplift than divergent segments showing wider necking zones, in particular during the early post-rift.The characterization of the stratigraphic architecture of the post-rift sedimentary wedge then allowed for the quantification of accumulation history in the passive margin basins. New low-temperature thermochronological data (AFTA and Apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He) acquired at the University of Glasgow on the samples of three regional transects perpendicular to the margin allowed for the quantification of the denudation history and eroded volume on the continental domain. These data shows that the major thermal event recorded by those samples is the cooling phase related to the erosion of a rift-related topography along the margin. Erosion and accumulation budgets fall within the same order of magnitude. During some given periods (Late Cretaceous and since the Late Miocene), excess in accumulation may be associated with the reworking of sediments previously stored within intracontinental basins or on the shelf of the margin.; Cette thèse présente la première étude Source-to-Sink de la marge Atlantique Equatoriale africaine au Méso-Cénozoïque. Nous avons dans un premier temps produit, à partir d’une nouvelle méthode intégrant les limites d’érosion des dépôts préservés dans les bassins et leur extension initiale minimum, une nouvelle reconstruction paléogéographique et structurale couplant pour la première fois le continent ouest africain et l’Atlantique Equatoriale au cours du Méso-Cénozoïque. Ceci nous permet de suivre l’évolution depuis 200 Ma des domaines en érosion (sources) et en sédimentation (puits) à l’échelle continentale. Nous montrons en particulier qu’au Crétacé supérieur la zone correspondait à un grand bassin intracratonique Saharien qui exportaient ses sédiments à la fois vers la Téthys et vers l’Atlantique Equatoriale. La fragmentation de ce bassin a eu lieu à l’Oligocène par le soulèvement du bouclier du Hoggar qui a isolé les petits dépôt-centres résiduels actuels. Le développement de cette topographie particulière est issu de la superposition de différentes longueurs d’onde de déformation à l’échelle continentale combinant les bourrelets marginaux longeant la marge équatoriale et un bombement de type « point chaud ».Nous avons ensuite caractérisé, à partir de l’interprétation des données sismiques et des puits, la segmentation de la marge continentale équatoriale en segments transformants et divergents et l’architecture stratigraphique post-rift du prisme stratigraphique associée au Crétacé Supérieur. Nous montrons que les parties proximales (dépôts de plateforme et pente continentale) des prismes stratigraphiques du Crétacé Supérieur ne sont préservés que le long des segments divergents de la marge, et pas le long des segments transformants. Nous interprétons cette différence de préservation comme résultant de mouvements verticaux post-rift plus importants dans les domaines proximaux des segments transformants empêchant la préservation des termes proximaux des systèmes sédimentaires. La caractérisation des architectures stratigraphiques post-rifts a ensuite permis la quantification des volumes sédimentaires préservés dans ces bassins de marges passives. En parallèle, de nouvelles données de thermochronologie basse-température (AFTA et (U-Th-Sm/He sur apatite) acquises à l’Université de Glasgow sur les échantillons de trois profils perpendiculaires à la marge équatoriale ont permis de quantifier l’histoire de l’érosion et les volumes dénudés sur le domaine continental au cours du Méso-Cénozoïque. Ces données montrent que le seul événement thermique majeur enregistré correspond au refroidissement lié à la dénudation d’une topographie syn-rift le long de la marge. Le bilan d’érosion et d’accumulation montre que les ordres de grandeur des volumes dénudés et accumulés sont comparables à l’échelle de la marge équatoriale au cours du Méso-Cénozoïque. Certaines périodes (Crétacé Supérieur et depuis le Miocène Supérieur), montrent cependant un excès d’accumulation qui pourrait être associé à la remobilisation de sédiments précédemment stockés dans des bassins intracontinentaux ou sur la plateforme de la marge.

This PhD thesis presents the first source-to-sink study of the African Atlantic Equatorial margin. We established new Meso-Cenozoic paleogeographic and structural reconstructions, integrating the West African sub-continent and the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, based on a new mapping method defining both erosion limits of preserved deposits and their minimum original extension. We show the evolution over 200 Myrs of the eroding (sources) and accumulating domains (sinks) at continental scale. We demonstrate in particular that during the Cretaceous, a large Saharan intracratonic basin was exporting sediments toward both the Tethys and the future Atlantic Equatorial Ocean. The fragmentation of this basin occurred in the Oligocene, by the growth of the Hoggar swell that isolated the present-day small residual depot-centers. The development of this specific "basin and swell" topography results from the superimposition of various deformation wavelength at continental scale combining a marginal upwarp along the equatorial margin and a hot spot swell. We then characterized, from the interpretation of seismic data and well logs, the segmentation of the Equatorial Atlantic passive margin and the stratigraphic architecture of the post-rift Upper Cretaceous sedimentary wedge. We show that the proximal parts of the Late Cretaceous sedimentary wedge are only preserved along divergent segments of the margin and not along transform segments. We interpret this differential preservation as the result of a greater uplift, during the early post-rift, in the proximal parts of the transform segments preventing the preservation of the proximal terms of the sedimentary systems. The transform segments are associated with narrow necking zone, resulting in greater flexural uplift than divergent segments showing wider necking zones, in particular during the early post-rift. The characterization of the stratigraphic architecture of the post-rift sedimentary wedge then allowed for the quantification of accumulation history in the passive margin basins. New low-temperature thermochronological data (AFTA and Apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He) acquired at the University of Glasgow on the samples of three regional transects perpendicular to the margin allowed for the quantification of the denudation history and eroded volume on the continental domain. These data shows that the major thermal event recorded by those samples is the cooling phase related to the erosion of a rift-related topography along the margin. Erosion and accumulation budgets fall within the same order of magnitude. During some given periods (Late Cretaceous and since the Late Miocene), excess in accumulation may be associated with the reworking of sediments previously stored within intracontinental basins or on the shelf of the margin.; Cette thèse présente la première étude Source-to-Sink de la marge Atlantique Equatoriale africaine au Méso-Cénozoïque. Nous avons dans un premier temps produit, à partir d'une nouvelle méthode intégrant les limites d'érosion des dépôts préservés dans les bassins et leur extension initiale minimum, une nouvelle reconstruction paléogéographique et structurale couplant pour la première fois le continent ouest africain et l'Atlantique Equatoriale au cours du Méso-Cénozoïque. Ceci nous permet de suivre l'évolution depuis 200 Ma des domaines en érosion (sources) et en sédimentation (puits) à l'échelle continentale. Nous montrons en particulier qu'au Crétacé supérieur la zone correspondait à un grand bassin intracratonique Saharien qui exportaient ses sédiments à la fois vers la Téthys et vers l'Atlantique Equatoriale. La fragmentation de ce bassin a eu lieu à l'Oligocène par le soulèvement du bouclier du Hoggar qui a isolé les petits dépôt-centres résiduels actuels. Le développement de cette topographie particulière est issu de la superposition de différentes longueurs d'onde de déformation à l'échelle continentale combinant les bourrelets marginaux longeant la marge équatoriale et un bombement de type " point chaud ".Nous avons ensuite caractérisé, à partir de l'interprétation des données sismiques et des puits, la segmentation de la marge continentale équatoriale en segments transformants et divergents et l'architecture stratigraphique post-rift du prisme stratigraphique associée au Crétacé Supérieur. Nous montrons que les parties proximales (dépôts de plateforme et pente continentale) des prismes stratigraphiques du Crétacé Supérieur ne sont préservés que le long des segments divergents de la marge, et pas le long des segments transformants. Nous interprétons cette différence de préservation comme résultant de mouvements verticaux post-rift plus importants dans les domaines proximaux des segments transformants empêchant la préservation des termes proximaux des systèmes sédimentaires. Mes activités de recherche portent sur la compréhension des processus fluviaux, les facteurs qui les contrôlent à diverses échelles de temps, leur identification dans l’enregistrement sédimentaire et leur influence sur l’architecture stratigraphique des systèmes continentaux préservés dans les bassins sédimentaires.Ces dernières années, j’ai étudié les processus fluviaux en régime de préservation à diverses échelles de temps (du phénomène instantané au million d’années). A partir d’une approche en termes de sédimentologie de faciès, d’architecture stratigraphique de cartographie des réseaux fluviaux et de bases de données géographiques, mes recherches ont porté successivement sur :— A l’échelle de la dizaine d’années : le développement des morphologies fluviales anastomosées en relation avec la morphologie des levées naturelles, la mise en place de deltas et de crevasse et leur évolution vers une anabranche.— A l’échelle du siècle : l’étude de l’influence respective du climat, de la sédimentation et de la tectonique sur le réajustement du cours d’un cours d’eau en contexte de piémont orogénique soumis aux extrema climatiques liés à ENSO. Plus spécifiquement :— la localisation, la fréquence et les facteurs de contrôle des avulsions qui ont mené à laconstruction d’un megafan andin depuis le Dernier Maximum Glaciaire.— La mise en évidence de la chronologie des cycles incision/aggradation sur les terrassesalluviales de la Garonne, précisant ainsi le rôle des interactions hydrologie/végétation.— A l’échelle du million d’années : l’étude de l’architecture stratigraphique du piémont des Andes d’Equateur depuis le Miocène en lien avec la mise en place d’un ”Distributive Fluvial System” (DFS).Ces travaux permettent de contraindre l’expression faciologique des forçages tectoniques, climatiques ainsi que le fonctionnement autocyclique dans les séries fluviales. Les résultats acquis trouvent des applications dans la structuration des réservoirs et l’aménagement des plaines alluviales.

Ces activités disparates sont centrées autour d'un même thème qui est la signification du relief au dessus des zones de subduction. Au cours de ces années je me suis progressivement intéressé aux mouvements verticaux. Ceux-ci sont particulièrement bien enregistrés par les morphologies côtières et en particulier par les terrasses marines. Ces dernières se sont formées au cours des précédentes périodes interglaciaires, lorsque le niveau de la mer était haut, à peu près au même niveau que l'actuel. Ainsi, ces terrasses contiennent une information de qualité sur le soulèvement à l'échelle de quelques centaines de milliers d'années. Dans le détail, les séquences de terrasses montrent des variations morphologiques qui renferment probablement plus d'informations que leur altitude seule. C'est pourquoi je me suis intéressé à des cas de terrasses en formation : les plateformes côtières, via l'étude de terrain mais aussi la modélisation. J'ai par ailleurs travaillé sur la signification des concentrations en 10Be, et en particulier mis au point une méthode de quantification long-terme du recul des falaises. Ce mémoire se termine sur les perspectives d'avenir en continuité avec ces travaux sur la formation des terrasses, la vitesse d'évolution des plateformes ainsi que sur leurs caractéristiques en fonction des contextes géodynamiques.

Cette thèse est une contribution à la compréhension de l’évolution à long terme (106 – 107 ans) des paysages tropicaux sous l’influence d’un forçage épirogénique et de fluctuations climatiques. Elle a pour objet la Grande-Terre de Nouvelle-Calédonie et pour méthodes la géomorphologie, la cartographie des surfaces d’aplanissement assistée par SIG, l’analyse stratigraphique et structurale de formations sédimentaires fluviatiles ainsi que l’analyse de données géophysiques, topographiques et bathymétriques. Les résultats de ces approches croisées permettent de proposer un schéma d’évolution morphotectonique de la ride de Nouvelle-Calédonie depuis la fin de l’orogenèse alpine il y a 32 Ma. Deux périodes de morphogenèse sont distinguées.La première enregistre le soulèvement épisodique de la ride de Nouvelle-Calédonie, marqué par des périodes de quiescence propices à l’aplanissement latéritique, alternant avec des épisodes de l’incision des surfaces latéritiques.L’enrichissement des principaux gisements de nickel supergènes de type saprolitique s’opère pendant cette période, lors d’un épisode continu et lent de d’enfoncement du niveau de base permettant aux surfaces altérées d’évoluer vers des formes de versant tout en étant soumises à une forte altération dans de bonnes conditions de drainage.L’enrichissement en nickel des plaines latéritiques (aujourd’hui perchées) situées en aval de ces versants, pourrait être contemporain ou légèrement postérieur à celui des surfaces de versant.Au cours d’une deuxième période se met en place un régime érosif principalement contrôlé par des alternances climatiques et des mouvements épirogéniques d’origine tectonique et isostatique. Le début de cette période est marqué, à l’Oligocène supérieur ou au tout début du Miocène, par la mise en place de systèmes sédimentaires fluviatiles consécutive à des phases d’incision du réseau hydrographique. À la suite de l’installation du premier delta se développe un système de trois glacis cuirassés successifs sur les piedmonts des massifs de péridotites. Ils sont les témoins de l’alternance de climats relativement secs (permettant la pédimentation) et humides (permettant leur ferruginisation).Un épisode de déformation extensive affecte la Grande-Terre à l’Oligocène supérieur ou au Miocène tout à fait basal. Il se caractérise par l’activation de failles parallèles à la ride et une direction d’extension normale à cette dernière. Un changement cinématique d’ampleur régionale initie un régime transtensif associé à une direction d’extension parallèle ou légèrement oblique à la ride de Nouvelle-Calédonie, compatible avec la convergence de plaque initiée au Miocène moyen ou supérieur le long de la zone de subduction de Vanuatu.L’extension néogène a induit le découpage et l’effondrement des piedmonts et du plateau continental de la ride dans les bassins océaniques adjacents ainsi que le basculement transversal de la ride vers le SW dont la dissymétrie résultante est marquée par un escarpement côtier nord oriental de plusieurs centaines de mètres et une large plaine côtière sud occidentale. Le basculement a induit une phase majeure d’érosion régressive sur le drainage nord oriental de la ride alors qu’une large pédiplaine s’installait sur le versant sud occidental.Il semble que la marque des oscillations quaternaires de niveau de niveau de base soit confinée aux régions côtières de la Grande-Terre et à son lagon.; This thesis is a contribution to the understanding of long-term (106 – 107 yr) tropical landform development under the influence of epeirogenic forcing and climate change, with a special reference to mainland New Caledonia. The approach combines geomorphic analysis, GIS-assisted mapping of lateritic landsurfaces, stratigraphic and structural analysis of fluvial sediments as well as the interpretation of geophysical, topographic, and bathymetric data.The results of this multidisciplinary approach allows proposing a morphotectonic development model for the New Caledonia ridge since the end of the Alpine orogeny in the earliest Oligocene. Two main periods are distinguished.The first period records episodic uplift of the rigde, with times of quiescence enhancing lateritic planation, alternating with incision episodes of the lateritic surfaces.Enrichment of the main saprolitic Nickel ore deposits took place during this period, due to a prolonged episode of slow base level lowering, allowing weathered surfaces to evolve towards valley side slopes during continuous lateritization provided by good drainage conditions. Ni enrichment of the downstream lateritics plains (today dissected by erosion) could be contemporaneous- to slightly younger than that of the ore-bearing valley sides.During a second period, a new erosional regime operated, driven by climate change and epeirogenic movements of tectonic or isostatic origin. The beginning of this period is marked, in the Late Oligocene to the earliest Miocene, by the settlement of two aggrading fluvial sedimentary systems following two regional phases of river incision. A system of three stepped, ferricrete-capped, pediments (glacis) of regional extent developed after the abandonment of the first deltaic sequence. They record alternation of phases of drier tropical climate (allowing pedimentation) and returns to humid conditions (allowing ferralitization of the previously settled pediment).In the Late Oligocene / earliest Miocene, the New Caledonia ridge underwent a phase of extensional tectonics characterized by the activation of ridge-parallel faults with a stretching direction normal to the ridge. A regional kinematic change initiated a transtensional regime associated with ridge-oblique extension, compatible with the initiation of subduction of the Australian plate beneath the Pacific plate in the Early/mid Miocene along the Vanuatu trench.Neogene extensional tectonics led to the dissection and collapse of the piedmont and continental platform of the ridge into the adjoining ocean basins as well as the tilting of ridge towards the SW, resulting in the formation of a large coastal escarpment along the NE edge of the island. Tilting induced a phase of regressive erosion on the northeastward flowing drainage of the island whereas a large pediplain developed on the southwestward flowing drainage.The imprints of Quaternary base-level changes appear to have been confined to the coastal regions of the island and its lagoon.
