Abstract

Many wetlands support high biodiversity and are protected sites, but some are contaminated with radionuclides from routine or accidental releases from nuclear facilities. This radiation exposure needs to be assessed to demonstrate radiological protection of the environment. Existing biota dose models cover generic terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems, not wetlands specifically. This paper, which was produced under IAEA's Environmental Modelling for Radiation Safety (EMRAS) II programme, describes an evaluation of how models can be applied to radionuclide contaminated wetlands. Participants used combinations of aquatic and terrestrial model parameters to assess exposure. Results show the importance of occupancy factor and food source (aquatic or terrestrial) included. The influence of soil saturation conditions on external dose rates is also apparent. In general, terrestrial parameters provided acceptable predictions for wetland organisms. Abstract

The selection of dispersion is a classical problem in ecology and evolutionary biology. Deterministic dynamical models of two competing species differing only in their passive dispersal rates suggest that the lower mobility species has a competitive advantage in inhomogeneous environments, and that dispersion is a neutral characteristic in homogeneous environments. Here we consider models including local population fluctuations due to both individual movements and random birth and death events to investigate the effect of demographic stochasticity on the competition between species with different dispersal rates. In this paper, the first of two, we focus on homogeneous environments where deterministic models predict degenerate dynamics in the sense that there are many (marginally) stable equilibria with the species' coexistence ratio depending only on initial data. When demographic stochasticity is included the situation changes. A novel large carrying capacity ([Formula: see text]) asymptotic analysis, confirmed by direct numerical simulations, shows that a preference for faster dispersers emerges on a precisely defined [Formula: see text] time scale. We conclude that while there is no evolutionarily stable rate for competitors to choose in these models, the selection mechanism quantified here is the essential counterbalance in spatially inhomogeneous models including demographic fluctuations which do display an evolutionarily stable dispersal rate.

Abstract

Of the ~600 scientific publications on the Fukushima event, more than 80% relate to themes of transport of radionuclides in environmental media, transfer to wildlife and foodstuffs, and dose to environmental receptors. This focus reflects a continued need for development and harmonisation of radiological modelling approaches such as has been underway through recent IAEA and ICRP initiatives (e.g. EMRAS I and II, MODARIA). Key developments in improving the understanding of uptake of radionuclides in wildlife include establishing the Wildlife Transfer Parameter Database and related IAEA handbook on transfer to wildlife. These sources provide access to a comprehensive collection of transfer parameters, including input from Australian sources (www.wildlifetransferdatabase.org). Key improvements were highlighted in a recent Journal of Environmental Radioactivity special issue (Vol. 121). Dose modelling for wildlife continues to be challenged by the high diversity of biotic types (plankton to whales) and the breadth of exposure scenarios in diverse ecosystems. Modelling codes (e.g. ERICA Tool, RESRAD-Biota) are undergoing updates of their transfer parameters, improvement of capabilities such as probabilistic analysis (e.g. Monte Carlo), and harmonization of approaches through IAEA model testing exercises (e.g., Little Forest Burial Ground biota dose modelling assessment). A recent development has been the use of voxel dosimetry approaches which build on the standard simplified ellipsoid approach by modelling the absorbed doses in individual organs. Recent improvements in defining dose effects to environmental receptors have focused on updating the FREDERICA Radiation Effects Database. Abstract

An IAEA handbook presenting transfer parameter values for wildlife has recently been produced. Concentration ratios (CRwo-media) between the whole organism (fresh weight) and either soil (dry weight) or water were collated for a range of wildlife groups (classified taxonomically and by feeding strategy) in terrestrial, freshwater, marine and brackish generic ecosystems. The data have been compiled in an on line database, which will continue to be updated in the future providing the basis for subsequent revision of the Wildlife TRS values. An overview of the compilation and analysis, and discussion of the extent and limitations of the data is presented. Example comparisons of the CRwo-media values are given for polonium across all wildlife groups and ecosystems and for molluscs for all radionuclides. The CRwo-media values have also been compared with those currently used in the ERICA Tool which represented the most complete published database for wildlife transfer values prior to this work. The use of CRwo-media values is a pragmatic approach to predicting radionuclide activity concentrations in wildlife and is similar to that used for screening assessments for the human food chain. The CRwo-media values are most suitable for a screening application where there are several conservative assumptions built into the models which will, to varying extents, compensate for the variable data quality and quantity, and associated uncertainty. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

The IAEA Technical Report Series (TRS) handbook on transfer of radionuclides to human foodstuffs from terrestrial and freshwater systems has recently been revised during the EMRAS I programme [1]. The document updates the previous handbook (TRS 364) and constitutes an important source of information for transfer parameters for the human foodchain. Quantification of the rates of transfer of radionuclides through foodchains to humans has long been a key focus of radiation protection. More recently, there has been a move away from radiation protection being solely anthropogenic to one which also considers protection of the environment as recognised by both the IAEA [2] and the ICRP [3] in their Fundamental Safety Principles and revised Recommendations, respectively, both of which now include the need to protect the environment. To address these recommendations and safety principles, the consequences of radiological releases need to be considered in part by estimating an internal dose. To do this, the transfer of radionuclides to wildlife of interest needs to be quantified. In response to the need for a reference source of information on radionuclide transfer to wildlife, the IAEA initiated the development of a TRS handbook, which has been supported by interaction with the EMRAS II Working Group 5, (http://www-ns.iaea.org/projects/emras/emras2/working-groups/working-group-five.asp). The TRS handbook has been finalised and is currently going through the IAEA approval process. The TRS handbook provides equilibrium concentration ratio values for wildlife groups in terrestrial, freshwater, marine and estuarine environments. Wildlife is considered to include all non-domesticated plants, animals and other organisms including feral species (i.e. non-native self-sustaining populations). Abstract

Far-infrared, near-infrared, millimeter-wave, and optical data are presented for two of the large molecular clouds which border the W5 (IC 1848) giant H II region. These data are combined to identify three B0-B2 zero-age main-sequence stars which are forming in these clouds and to study the density distribution and kinematic structure of their surrounding molecular gas. This investigation into the environment in which massive stars have formed in these clouds, when considered alongside similar studies of the W5A/S201 molecular cloud, leads to the conclusion that the expanding W5 H II region has played an important role in initiating the formation of these massive stars.

Abstract

The present report describes the case of a 57-year-old patient with malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the left atrium operated on for a suspected atrial myxoma. Surgery was performed as radically as possible and included resection of the atrial wall. Clinical investigation and echocardiography performed 29 months after surgery revealed no signs of tumor recurrence. Diagnostic procedures, topography, pathohistology as well as options for therapy are discussed with regard to the latest literature. A radical surgical approach represents the only effective therapeutic measure. Owing to a lack of sufficient experience, there is no additional therapeutic recommendation on hand. Neither radiation nor chemotherapeutic treatment concepts have proved efficient. Echocardiography represents the best examination procedure for both diagnosis and follow-up in patients with cardiac tumor.

Abstract

Heyde's syndrome is characterized by gastrointestinal bleeding due to angiodysplasias of the gut associated with calcific aortic stenosis. This association does not seem to be a patho-etiological entity but an occasional coincidence in the elderly. Aortic valve replacement (preferably with a bioprothesis) has been postulated to be the treatment of choice for the cure of the bleeding. Two cases of this syndrome are reported on. In one of the cases implantation of a bioprosthesis was accompanied by almost immediate cessation of bleeding, but with reoccurrence after one year necessitating local therapy. In the other case postoperative bleeding following aortic and mitral valve replacement with mechanical prostheses and tricuspid annuloplasty was the reason for coloscopic examination, which showed areas of angiodysplasia in the ascending colon. However, apart from a pause in anticoagulation medication no additional therapy was required since the hemorrhage ceased.

Abstract

The direct inhibition of N- and P/Q-type calcium channels by G protein betagamma subunits is considered a key mechanism for regulating presynaptic calcium levels. We have recently reported that a number of features associated with this G protein inhibition are dependent on the G protein beta subunit isoform (Arnot, M. I., Stotz, S. C., Jarvis, S. E., Zamponi, G. W. (2000) J. Physiol. (Lond.) 527, 203-212; Cooper, C. B., Arnot, M. I., Feng, Z.-P., Jarvis, S. E., Hamid, J., Zamponi, G. W. (2000) J. Biol. Chem. 275, 40777-40781). Here, we have examined the abilities of different types of ancillary calcium channel beta subunits to modulate the inhibition of alpha(1B) N-type calcium channels by the five known different Gbeta subunit subtypes. Our data reveal that the degree of inhibition by a particular Gbeta subunit is strongly dependent on the specific calcium channel beta subunit, with N-type channels containing the beta(4) subunit being less susceptible to Gbetagamma-induced inhibition. The calcium channel beta(2a) subunit uniquely slows the kinetics of recovery from G protein inhibition, in addition to mediating a dramatic enhancement of the G protein-induced kinetic slowing. For Gbeta(3)-mediated inhibition, the latter effect is reduced following site-directed mutagenesis of two palmitoylation sites in the beta(2a) N-terminal region, suggesting that the unique membrane tethering of this subunit serves to modulate G protein inhibition of N-type calcium channels. Taken together, our data suggest that the nature of the calcium channel beta subunit present is an important determinant of G protein inhibition of N-type channels, thereby providing a possible mechanism by which the cellular/subcellular expression pattern of the four calcium channel beta subunits may regulate the G protein sensitivity of N-type channels expressed at different loci throughout the brain and possibly within a neuron.

Abstract

A preparation from rat liver containing both microsomes and soluble enzymes when supplemented with the necessary cofactors incorporates acetate-1-14C preponderantly into the saponiflable fraction of the lipids. Bicarbonate has no significant stimulating effect on the synthesis whereas citrate and malonate have pronounced and similar stimulatory effects, particularly when they are preincubated with the synthesizing system. However, at high citrate concentrations bicarbonate becomes inhibitory, Malonate stimulates fatty acid synthesis without participating as a metabolite. The same is concluded with citrate, at least with concentration up to 15 mM. An interrelationship between citrate and ATP concentrations and the stimulation of fatty acid synthesis is indicated.
