Search

We present a measurement of the sky distribution of positronium (Ps) annihilation continuum emission obtained with the SPI spectrometer on board ESA's INTEGRAL observatory. The only sky region from which significant Ps continuum emission is detected is the Galactic bulge. The Ps continuum emission is circularly symmetric about the Galactic centre, with an extension of about 8 deg FWHM. Within measurement uncertainties, the sky distribution of the Ps continuum emission is consistent with that found by us for the 511 keV electron-positron annihilation line using SPI. Assuming that 511 keV line and Ps continuum emission follow the same spatial distribution, we derive a Ps fraction of 0.92 +/- 0.09. These results strengthen our conclusions regarding the origin of positrons in our Galaxy based on observations of the 511 keV line. In particular, they suggest that the main source of Galactic positrons is associated with an old stellar population, such as Type Ia supernovae, classical novae, or low-mass X-ray binaries. According to standard models supernovae produce radioactive $^{44}$Ti, which should be visible in gamma-rays following decay to $^{44}$Ca for a few centuries. $^{44}Ti production is believed to be the source of cosmic $^{44}$Ca, whose abundance is well established. Yet, gamma-ray telescopes have not seen the expected young remnants of core collapse events. The $^{44}$Ti mean life of $\tau \simeq$ 89 y and the Galactic supernova rate of $\simeq$ 3/100 y imply $\simeq$ several detectable $^{44}Ti gamma-ray sources, but only one is clearly seen, the 340-year-old Cas A SNR. Furthermore, supernovae which produce much $^{44}Ti are expected to occur primarily in the inner part of the Galaxy, where young massive stars are most abundant. Because the Galaxy is transparent to gamma-rays, this should be the dominant location of expected gamma-ray sources. Yet the Cas A SNR as the only one source is located far from the inner Galaxy (at longitude 112 degree). We evaluate the surprising absence of detectable supernovae from the past three centuries. We discuss whether our understanding of SN explosions, their $^{44}Ti yields, their spatial distributions, and statistical arguments can be stretched so that this apparent disagreement may be accommodated within reasonable expectations, or if we have to revise some or all of the above aspects to bring expectations in agreement with the observations. We conclude that either core collapse supernovae have been improbably rare in the Galaxy during the past few centuries, or $^{44}Ti-producing supernovae are atypical supernovae. We also present a new argument based on $^{44}$Ca/$^{40}$Ca ratios in mainstream SiC stardust grains that may cast doubt on massive-He-cap Type I supernovae as the source of most galactic $^{44}$Ca., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics 2006. We performed a spectroscopic study of the 1809 keV gamma-ray line from 26Al decay in the Galaxy using the SPI imaging spectrometer with its high-resolution Ge detector camera on the INTEGRAL observatory. We analyzed observations of the first two mission years, fitting spectra from all 7130 telescope pointings in narrow energy bins to models of instrumental background and the 26Al sky. Instrumental background is estimated from independent tracers of cosmic-ray activation. The shape of the 26Al signal is compared to the instrumental response to extract the width of the celestial line. We detect the 26Al line at \~16sigma significance. The line is broadened only slightly, if at all; we constrain the width to be below 2.8 keV (FWHM, 2 sigma). The average Doppler velocities of 26Al at the time of its decay in the interstellar medium (decay time~1.04 My) therefore are probably around 100 km/s, in agreement with expectations from Galactic rotation and interstellar turbulence. The flux and spatial distribution of the emission are found consistent with previous observations. The INTEGRAL observatory has been performing a deep survey of the Galactic central radian since 2003, with the goal of both extracting a catalog of sources and gaining insight into the Galactic diffuse emission. This paper concentrates on the estimation of the total point sources emission contribution. It is now clear that unresolved point sources contribute to the observed diffuse emission; the increasing sensitivity of instruments with time has lead to a steady decrease in estimates of this ``diffuse emission''. We have analysed the first year data obtained with the spectrometer and imager SPI on board INTEGRAL. First, a catalog of 63 hard X-ray sources detected, time-averaged, during our 2003 Galactic plane survey, is derived. Second, after extracting the spectra of the sources detected by SPI, their combined contribution is compared to the total (resolved and unresolved) emission from the Galactic ridge. The data analysis is complex: it requires us to split the total emission into several components, as discrete sources and diffuse emission are superimposed in SPI data. The main result is that point source emission dominates in the hard X-ray/soft $\gamma$-ray domain, and contributes around 90 % of the total emission around 100 keV, while above 250 keV, diffuse electron-positron annihilation, through its three-photon positronium continuum with a positronium fraction $\sim$ 0.97 and the 511 keV electron-positron line, dominates over the sources., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

The diffuse continuum emission from the Galactic plane in the energy range 18-1000 keV has been studied using 16 Ms of data from the SPI instrument on INTEGRAL. With such an exposure we can exploit the imaging properties of SPI to achieve a good separation of point sources from the various diffuse components. Using a candidate-source catalogue derived with IBIS on INTEGRAL and a number of sky distribution models we obtained spectra resolved in Galactic longitude. We can identify spectral components of a diffuse continuum of power law shape with index about 1.7, a positron annihilation component with a continuum from positronium and the line at 511 keV, and a second, roughly power-law component from detected point sources. Our analysis confirms the concentration of positron annihilation emission in the inner region (|l|<10), the disk (10<|l|<30) being at least a factor 7 weaker in this emission. The power-law component in contrast drops by only a factor 2, showing a quite different longitude distribution and spatial origin. Detectable sources constitute about 90% of the total Galactic emission between 20 and 60 keV, but have a steeper spectrum than the diffuse emission, their contribution to the total emission dropping rapidly to a small fraction at higher energies. In the SPI energy range the flux is lower than found by OSSE, probably due to the more complete accounting for sources by SPI. The power-law emission is difficult to explain as of interstellar origin, inverse Compton giving at most 10%, and instead a population of unresolved point sources is proposed as a possible origin, AXPs with their spectra hardening above 100 keV being plausible candidates. It is believed that core-collapse supernovae (CCSN), occurring at a rate about once per century, have seeded the interstellar medium with long-lived radioisotopes such as 60Fe (half-life 1.5 Myr), which can be detected by the gamma rays emitted when they beta-decay. Here we report the detection of the 60Fe decay lines at 1173 keV and 1333 keV with fluxes 3.7 +/- 1.1 x 10(-5) ph cm(-2) s(-1) per line, in spectra taken by the SPI spectrometer on board INTEGRAL during its first year. The same analysis applied to the 1809 keV line of 26Al yielded a line flux ratio 60Fe/26Al = 0.11 +/- 0.03. One of the scientific goals of the main instrument of GLAST is the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the energy range from ~20 MeV to ~300 GeV. In order to extend the energy measurement towards lower energies a secondary instrument, the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM), will measure GRBs from ~10 keV to ~25 MeV and will therefore allow the investigation of the relation between the keV and the MeV-GeV emission from GRBs over six energy decades. These unprecedented measurements will permit the exploration of the unknown aspects of the high-energy burst emission and the investigation of their connection with the well-studied low-energy emission. They will also provide ne insights into the physics of GRBs in general. The gamma-ray source GRO J0852-4642, discovered by COMPTEL, is a possible counterpart of the supernova remnant RX J0852-4622. Detection of radioactive decay from 44Ti nuclei would proof it to be the youngest and nearest supernova remnant known so far. During the first year of INTEGRAL core program, the Vela region was observed twice in all for more than 2000 ks. Among other nucleosynthesis studies, one of the most important scientific goals of this observation is the detection of 44Ti gamma-ray lines expected at 68 keV, 78 keV and 1157 keV. For this purpose the INTEGRAL Spectrometer (SPI), with its very high energy resolution thanks to its germanium detector camera is the key instrument, permitting a precise determination of gamma-ray line intensities and profiles. The upper limit for the 78.4 keV 44Ti gamma-ray line emission derived from the first analysis is 1.1 x 10^{-4} gamma/cm2s. This value is mainly dominated by systematic uncertainties in the treatment of the instrumental background. By accumulating more observation time in the next years of the mission and by improving the background understanding, a reliable 44Ti flux for GRO J0852-4642 or an upper limit which constrains the COMPTEL flux can be expected., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. We present first results on the observation of 1809 keV gamma-ray line emission from the Cygnus X region with the SPI imaging spectrometer. Our analysis is based on data from the performance verification phase of the INTEGRAL instruments and comprises 1.3 Ms of exposure time. We observe a 1809 keV line flux of (7.3 +/- 0.9) x 10-5 ph cm-2 s-1 from a region delimited by galactic longitudes 73-93 deg and |b| < 7 deg at a significance level of 8 sigma. The 1809 keV line appears moderately broadened, with an intrinsic FWHM of 3.3 +/- 1.3 keV. Although this broadening is only marginal (at the 2 sigma level our data are compatible with an unbroadened line), it could reflect the 26Al ejecta kinematics., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the proceedings of the 5th INTEGRAL workshop (held in Munich, 2004)

We present a solution to the apparent discrepancy between the radial gradient in the diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emissivity and the distribution of supernova remnants, believed to be the sources of cosmic rays. Recent determinations of the pulsar distribution have made the discrepancy even more apparent. The problem is shown to be plausibly solved by a variation in the CO-to-N(H2) scaling factor. If this factor increases by a factor of 5-10 from the inner to the outer Galaxy, as expected from the Galactic metallicity gradient, we show that the source distribution required to match the radial gradient of gamma-ray can be reconciled with the distribution of supernova remnants as traced by current studies of pulsars. The resulting model fits the EGRET gamma-ray profiles extremely well in longitude, and reproduces the mid-latitude inner Galaxy intensities better than previous models., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters

Al(26) radioactivity traces recent nucleosynthesis throughout the Galaxy, and is known to be produced in massive stars and novae. The map from its decay gamma-ray line suggests massive stars to dominate, but high-resolution line spectroscopy is expected to supplement imaging of Al(26) source regions and thus to help decide about the Al(26) injection process and interstellar environment, hence about the specific massive-star subgroup and phase which produces interstellar Al(26). The INTEGRAL Spectrometer SPI has observed Galactic Al(26) radioactivity in its 1809 keV gamma-ray line during its first inner-Galaxy survey. Instrumental background lines make analysis difficult; yet, a clear signal from the inner Galaxy agrees with expectations. In particular, SPI has constrained the line width to exclude previously-reported line broadenings corresponding to velocities >500 km/s. The signal-to-background ratio of percent implies that detector response and background modeling need to be fine-tuned to eventually enable line shape deconvolution in order to extract source location information along the line of sight., Comment: 6 pages; Proc. 5th INTEGRAL workshop, Munich, Feb. 2004

INTEGRAL Spectrometer SPI data from the first year of the Galactic Centre Deep Exposure has been analysed for the diffuse continuum from the Galactic ridge. A new catalogue of sources from the INTEGRAL Imager IBIS has been used to account for their contribution to the celestial signal. Apparently diffuse emission is detected at a level ~10% of the total source flux. A comparison of the spectrum of diffuse emission with that from an analysis of IBIS data alone shows that they are consistent. The search for gamma-ray line emission from the radioactive decay of 60Fe figures among the prime scientific objectives of the INTEGRAL mission. 60Fe is believed to be primarily produced in core-collapse supernovae, although other sites, such as carbon deflagration supernovae or intermediate mass AGB stars have also been suggested. We present first results of our search for the 1173 and 1332 keV gamma-ray lines of 60Fe decay in the SPI data of the first mission year. So far we can only report upper flux limits whose levels are determined by systematic uncertainties in the treatment of the instrumental background. Once we understand the background uncertainties better, the SPI data should provide stringent constraints on 60Fe nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy., Comment: 5 pages, to appear in the Proceedings of the 5th INTEGRAL Workshop (Munich, Germany)

An interaction potential energy between and adsorbate (Xe and Ar) and the 10-fold Al-Ni-Co quasicrystal is computed by summing over all adsorbate-substrate interatomic interactions. The quasicrystal atoms' coordinates are obtained from LEED experiments and the Lennard-Jones parameters of Xe-Al, Xe-Ni and Xe-Co are found using semiempirical combining rules. The resulting potential energy function of position is highly corrugated. Monolayer adsorption of Xe and Ar on the quasicrystal surface is investigated in two cases: 1) in the limit of low coverage (Henry's law regime), and 2) at somewhat larger coverage, when interactions between adatoms are considered through the second virial coefficient, C_{AAS}. A comparison with adsorption on a flat surface indicates that the corrugation enhances the effect on Xe-Xe (Ar-Ar) interactions. The theoretical results for the low coverage adsorption regime are compared to experimental (LEED isobar) data., Comment: 12 pages, 8figures

The shape of the gamma-ray line from radioactive 26Al, at 1808.7 keV energy in the frame of the decaying isotope, is determined by its kinematics when it decays, typically 10^6 y after its ejection into the interstellar medium from its nucleosynthesis source. Three measurements of the line width exist: HEAO-C's 1982 value of (0+3) keV FWHM, the GRIS 1996 value of (5.4 +/- 1.3) keV FWHM, and the recent RHESSI value of (2.0 +/- 0.8) keV FWHM, suggesting either "cold", "hot", or "warm" 26Al in the ISM. We model the line width as expected from Galactic rotation, expanding supernova ejecta, and/or Wolf-Rayet winds, and predict a value below 1 keV (FWHM) with plausible assumptions about 26Al initial velocities and expansion history. Even though the recent RHESSI measurement reduces the need to explain a broad line corresponding to 540 km/s mean 26Al velocity through extreme assumptions about grain transport of 26Al or huge interstellar cavities, our results suggest that standard 26Al ejection models produce a line on the narrow side of what is observed by RHESSI and INTEGRAL. Improved INTEGRAL and RHESSI spatially-resolved line width measurements should help to disentangle the effects of Galactic rotation from the ISM trajectories of 26Al., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The SPI instrument has been launched on-board the INTEGRAL observatory on October 17, 2002. SPI is a spectrometer devoted to the sky observation in the 20 keV-8 MeV energy range using 19 germanium detectors. The performance of the cryogenic system is nominal and allows to cool the 19 kg of germanium down to 85 K with a comfortable margin. The energy resolution of the whole camera is 2.5 keV at 1.1 MeV. This resolution degrades with time due to particle irradiation in space. We show that the annealing process allows the recovery of the initial performance. The anticoincidence shield works as expected, with a low threshold at 75 keV, reducing the GeD background by a factor of 20. The digital front-end electronics system allows the perfect alignement in time of all the signals as well as the optimisation of the dead time (12%). We demonstrate that SPI is able to map regions as complex as the galactic plane. The obtained spectrum of the Crab nebula validates the present version of our response matrix. The 3 $\sigma$ sensitivity of the instrument at 1 MeV is 8 10$^{-7}$ph$\cdot$cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}\cdot$keV$^{-1}$ for the continuum and 3 10$^{-5}$ph$\cdot$cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}$ for narrow lines., Comment: 10 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (special INTEGRAL volume)

SPI, the Spectrometer on board the ESA INTEGRAL satellite, to be launched in October 2002, will study the gamma-ray sky in the 20 keV to 8 MeV energy band with a spectral resolution of 2 keV for photons of 1 MeV, thanks to its 19 germanium detectors spanning an active area of 500 cm2. A coded mask imaging technique provides a 2 deg angular resolution. The 16 deg field of view is defined by an active BGO veto shield, furthermore used for background rejection. In April 2001 the flight model of SPI underwent a one-month calibration campaign at CEA in Bruy\`eres le Ch\^atel using low intensity radioactive sources and the CEA accelerator for homogeneity measurements and high intensity radioactive sources for imaging performance measurements. After integration of all scientific payloads (the spectrometer SPI, the imager IBIS and the monitors JEM-X and OMC) on the INTEGRAL satellite, a cross-calibration campaign has been performed at the ESA center in Noordwijk. A set of sources has been placed in the field of view of the different instruments in order to compare their performances and determine their mutual influence. Some of those sources had already been used in Bruy\`eres during the SPI standalone test. For the lowest energy band calibration an X-ray generator has been used. We present the analysis of the first observations of the Cygnus region by the SPI spectrometer onboard the Integral Gamma Ray Observatory, encompassing ${\sim}$ 600 ks of data. Three sources namely Cyg X-1, Cyg X-3 and EXO 2030+375 were clearly detected. Our data illustrate the temporal variability of Cyg X-1 in the energy range from 20 keV to 300 keV. The spectral analysis shows a remarkable stability of the Cyg X-1 spectra when averaged over one day timescale. The other goal of these observations is SPI inflight calibration and performance verification. We report the first measurements of the 511 keV line emission from the Galactic Centre (GC) region performed with the spectrometer SPI on the space observatory INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory). Taking into account the range of spatial distribution models which are consistent with the data, we derive a flux of $9.9^{+4.7}_{-2.1} \times 10^{-4}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and an intrinsic line width of $2.95^{+0.45}_{-0.51}$ keV (FWHM). The results are consistent with other high-spectroscopy measurements, though the width is found to be at the upper bound of previously reported values., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The precision measurement of the 1809 keV gamma-ray line from Galactic $^{26}$Al is one of the goals of the SPI spectrometer on INTEGRAL with its Ge detector camera. We aim for determination of the detailed shape of this gamma-ray line, and its variation for different source regions along the plane of the Galaxy. Data from the first part of the core program observations of the first mission year have been inspected. A clear detection of the \Al line at about 5--7 $\sigma$ significance demonstrates that SPI will deepen \Al studies. The line intensity is consistent with expectations from previous experiments, and the line appears narrower than the 5.4 keV FWHM reported by GRIS, more consistent with RHESSI's recent value. Only preliminary statements can be made at this time, however, due to the multi-component background underlying the signal at \about 40 times higher intensity than the signal from Galactic $^{26}$Al., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in A&A (special INTEGRAL volume)

We have synthesised a thin film of copper with a quasi-periodic structure by the adsorption of copper atoms on the five-fold surface of the icosahedral quasicrystal Al-Pd-Mn at room temperature. The quasi-periodicity of the thin film is manifested in low energy electronic diffraction (LEED) measurements and in the existence of Fibonacci relationships between rows of copper atoms imaged using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). These findings demonstrate the feasibility of single-element quasi-periodic thin film formation using quasicrystals as templates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figs

Supernova 1998bu in the galaxy M96 was observed by COMPTEL for a total of 88 days starting 17 days after the explosion. We searched for a signal in the 847 keV and 1238 keV lines of radioactive 56Co from this type Ia supernova. Using several different analysis methods, we did not detect SN1998bu. Our measurements should have been sensitive enough to detect 60Co gamma-rays as predicted from supernova models. Our 2-sigma flux limit is 2.3 10^{-5} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}; this would correspond to 0.35 solar mass of ejected 56Ni, if SN1998bu were at a distance of 11.3 Mpc and transparent to MeV gamma rays for the period of our measurements. Monte Carlo simulations of Galactic Supernovae are carried out to study the rate of nearby events, which may have a direct effect on Earth's ecology though ionizing radiation and cosmic ray bombardment. The structure of the Al_{70}Pd_{21}Mn_{9} surface has been investigated using high resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). From two large five-fold terraces on the surface in a short decorated Fibonacci sequence, atomically resolved surface images have been obtained. One of these terraces carries a rare local configuration in a form of a ring. The location of the corresponding sequence of terminations in the bulk model M of icosahedral i-AlPdMn based on the three-dimensional tiling T*(2F) of an F-phase has been estimated using this ring configuration and the requirement from the LEED work of Gierer et al. that the average atomic density of the terminations is 0.136 atoms per A^2. A termination contains two atomic plane layers separated by a vertical distance of 0.48 A. The position of the bulk terminations is fixed within the layers of Bergman polytopes in the model M: they are 4.08 A in the direction of the bulk from a surface of the most dense Bergman layers. From the coding windows of the top planes in terminations in M we conclude that a Penrose (P1) tiling is possible on almost all five-fold terraces. The shortest edge of the tiling P1, is either 4.8 A or 7.8 A. The experimentally derived tiling of the surface with the ring configuration has an edge-length of 8.0 +- 0.3 A and hence matches the minimal edge-length expected from the model., Comment: 11 pages LaTeX file (withowt figures), 16 figures; changed content: new results on new STM data, old results valid and included

We present the time-averaged characteristics of the Crab pulsar in the 0.75-30 MeV energy window using data from the imaging Compton Telescope COMPTEL aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) collected over its 9 year mission. Exploiting the exceptionally long COMPTEL exposure on the Crab allowed us to derive significantly improved COMPTEL spectra for the Crab nebula and pulsar emissions, and for the first time to accurately determine at low-energy gamma-rays the pulse profile as a function of energy. These timing data, showing the well-known main pulse and second pulse at a phase separation of 0.4 with strong bridge emission, are studied together with data obtained at soft/hard X-ray energies from the ROSAT HRI, BeppoSAX LECS, MECS and PDS, at soft gamma-rays from CGRO BATSE and at high-energy gamma-rays from CGRO EGRET in order to obtain a coherent high-energy picture of the Crab pulsar from 0.1 keV up to 10 GeV., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in A&A main journal

The selection of the GLAST burst monitor (GBM) by NASA will allow the investigation of the relation between the keV and the MeV-GeV emission from gamma-ray bursts. The GBM consists of 12 NaI and 2 BGO crystals allowing a continuous measurement of the energy spectra of gamma-ray bursts from ~5 keV to \~30 MeV. One feature of the GBM is its high time resolution for time-resolved gamma-ray spectroscopy. Moreover the arrangement of the NaI crystals allows a rapid on-board location (<15 degrees) of a gamma-ray burst within a FoV of ~8.6 sr. The COMPTEL observations of the diffuse galactic 1.809 MeV emission attributed to the radioactive decay of 26Al have confirmed the diffuse nature of this interstellar emission line. One of the most significant features of the reconstructed intensity pattern is a flux enhancement in the direction of the Cygnus region. This region is fairly young and contains a wealth of massive stars, most of them grouped in the Cygnus OB associations. Multi-frequency model fitting strongly supports the hypothesis of massive stars and their descendent supernovae being the dominant sources of interstellar 26Al as observed by COMPTEL. Massive stars and supernovae are known to impart a large amount of kinetic energy into the surrounding ISM which lead to shockregions and large cavities. In addition, a large fraction of the electro-magnetic radiation of massive stars lies in the extreme ultra-violet causing photoionisation of the surrounding interstellar medium. We applied a population synthesis model in combination with an analytic model of the expansion of superbubbles to the Cygnus OB associations. The model predicts the expected 1.809 MeV flux and the gamma-ray line intensity due to interstellar 60Fe. We compute the sizes and expansion parameters of the expected HI-structures and the free-free emission intensities due to the photoionizing radiation from massive stars within this region of the sky. We discuss our present understanding of the Cygnus region with respect to the massive star census and history. Our model assigns about 70% of the 1.809 MeV intensity to six known OB associations, about 20% to known isolated sources and roughly 10% to an unkown diffuse component., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 27. The star forming process in the Milky Way is non-uniform in time and space. The scale of star forming regions ranges from groups within a few pc to large segments of spiral arms with linear dimension of order kpc. When many stars form in a relatively small volume over a short duration, a localized starburst ensues. The energetic impact of such a burst of star formation can severely affect the dynamic structure of the gaseous disk. Stellar winds and supernova explosions drive an expanding superbubble, whose size eventually exceeds the scale height of the disk and thus drives a disk-wind blowing metal enriched gas into the halo. We discuss the basic scenario of superbubble evolution, emphasizing the associated gamma-ray line signatures. The nature of the five-fold surface of Al(70)Pd(21)Mn(9) has been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. From high resolution images of the terraces, a tiling of the surface has been constructed using pentagonal prototiles. This tiling matches the bulk model of Boudard et. al. (J. Phys.: Cond. Matter 4, 10149, (1992)), which allows us to elucidate the atomic nature of the surface. Furthermore, it is consistent with a Penrose tiling T^*((P1)r) obtained from the geometric model based on the three-dimensional tiling T^*(2F). The results provide direct confirmation that the five-fold surface of i-Al-Pd-Mn is a termination of the bulk structure., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present the latest update of the 1.809 MeV sky survey obtained with COMPTEL. Based on all observations taken since the launch of CGRO in spring 1991 to early summer this year we obtain 1.809 MeV all sky maps using different imaging methods. The background is modelled on the basis of an adjacent energy approach. We confirm the previously reported characteristics of the galactic 1.809 MeV emission, specifically excesses in regions away from the inner Galaxy. The observed 1.8 MeV gamma-ray line is ascribed to the radioactive decay of 26Al in the interstellar medium. 26Al has been found to be predominantly synthesised in massive stars and their subsequent core-collapse supernovae, which is confirmed in tracer comparisons. The COMPTEL map of the 1.809 MeV gamma-ray line, which is attributed to the radioactive decay of 26Al, shows significant excess emission in the Cygnus region. Cygnus is a region of recent star formation activity, which is rich in massive, early-type stars concentrated in OB associations. We perform population synthesis studies of this region to model the production and distribution of 26Al, which is predominantly synthesized in massive stars and distributed through stellar winds and core-collapse supernovae. Our simulations of the Cygnus OB associations determine the time-dependent production rate of 26Al. We also estimate the associated production of radioactive 60Fe, which is primarily synthesized in core-collapse supernovae. Gamma-ray line emission from this isotope has yet to be detected. We also track the temporal evolution of the mechanical "luminosity" due to the kinetic energy of stellar winds and supernova ejecta, and the ionizing EUV emission from early-type stars. The type Ia supernova SN1998bu in M96 was observed by COMPTEL for a total of 88 days starting 17 days after the first detection of the supernova. The accumulated effective observation time was 4.14 Msec. The COMPTEL observations were performed in a special instrument mode improving the low-energy sensitivity. We generated images in the 847 keV and 1238 keV lines of 56Co, using improved point spread functions for the low-energy mode. We do not detect SN1998bu. A spectral analysis of our data also confirms the non-detection of the supernova. The observation of the interstellar 1.809 MeV decay-line of radioactive 26Al by the imaging gamma-ray telescope COMPTEL have let to the conclusion, that massive stars and their subsequent core-collapse supernovae are the dominant sources of the interstellar 26Al abundance. Massive stars are known to affect the surrounding interstellar medium by their energetic stellar winds and by the emission of ionising radiation. We present a population synthesis model allowing the correlated investigation of the gamma-ray emission characteristics with integrated matter, kinetic energy and extreme ultra-violet radiation emission of associations of massive stars. We study the time evolution of the various observables. In addition, we discuss systematic as well as statistical uncertainties affecting the model. The instrumental line background of the Compton telescope COMPTEL onboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory is due to the activation and/or decay of many isotopes. The major components of this background can be attributed to eight individual isotopes, namely 2D, 22Na, 24Na, 28Al, 40K, 52Mn, 57Ni, and 208Tl. The identification of instrumental lines with specific isotopes is based on the line energies as well as on the variation of the event rate with time, cosmic-ray intensity, and deposited radiation dose during passages through the South-Atlantic Anomaly. The characteristic variation of the event rate due to a specific isotope depends on its life-time, orbital parameters such as the altitude of the satellite above Earth, and the solar cycle. A detailed understanding of the background contributions from instrumental lines is crucial at MeV energies for measuring the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray background and for observing gamma-ray line emission in the interstellar medium or from supernovae and their remnants. Procedures to determine the event rate from each background isotope are described, and their average activity in spacecraft materials over the first seven years of the mission is estimated., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 22 pages, 21 figures

Recent observations of the diffuse Galactic gamma-ray glow at 1.809 MeV, attributed to the radioactive decay of 26Al, point towards a massive star origin of this radioactive isotope. Wolf Rayet stars and core-collapse supernovae appear to dominate the production of this isotope. Massive stars are commonly located in clusters and OB associations, regions of recent star formation. We thus discuss the temporal evolution of 26Al, and 60Fe within evolving OB associations. The goal of this study is to utilize the associated gamma-ray lines as a diagnostic tool for the study of correlated star formation, and also to provide more detailed models for the interpretation of data obtained with COMPTEL on the Compton Observatory. We investigate the effects of possible aluminum yield enhancements, predicted for some massive close binary systems. In addition to the ejection of chemically processed matter, massive stars also drive strong stellar winds and emit large fluxes of ionizing radiation. This energy and radiation input into the interstellar medium (ISM) is crucial for the dynamical evolution of the gas and subsequent star forming activity in the galactic disk. We discuss population synthesis models for a variety of star formation histories, and compare the predicted gamma-ray line lightcurves to COMPTEL measurements in the Cygnus region. The Wolf-Rayet binary system gamma^2 Vel (WR 11} is the closest known Wolf-Rayet (WR) star. Recently, its distance has been redetermined by parallax measurements with the HIPPARCOS astrometric satellite yielding 258^{+41}_{-31} pc, significantly lower than previous estimates (300 -- 450 pc). Wolf-Rayet stars have been proposed as a major source of the Galactic 26Al observed at 1.809 MeV. The gamma-ray telescope COMPTEL has previously reported 1.8 MeV emission from the Vela region, yet located closer to the Galactic plane than the position of gamma^2 Vel. We derive an upper 1.8 MeV flux limit of 1.1 10^{-5} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} (2 \sigma) for the WR star. With the new distance estimate, COMPTEL measurements place a limit of (6.3^{+2.1}_{-1.4}) 10^{-5} M_\odot the 26Al yield of gamma^2 Vel, thus constrains theories of nucleosynthesis in Wolf-Rayet stars. Radioactive isotopes such as 44Ti offer probably the most direct probe into nucleosynthesis environments in the interior of exploding stars, when the associated gamma-ray activities in the explosion remnant are detected and translated back to the isotopic abundances at the time of the explosion. In this paper, we assert that the procedure may not necessarily be straightforward, at least in the case of 44Ti, an orbital-electron capture decay isotope. Using the analytic model of McKee and Truelove (1995) for young supernova remnants, and assuming the existence of overdense 56Fe-dominated clumps that contain also 44Ti, we show that a high degree of ionization may be caused by the reverse shock so that the electron-capture rate of 44Ti could be significantly reduced from its laboratory value. When applied to Cas A, this increases under certain conditions the current 44Ti-activity by a factor 1.5 - 2.5, which yields a better compatibility between the COMPTEL observation of the 1.16 MeV line activity associated with the 44Ti decay and the SN model predictions of the initial 44Ti abundance. This possibility is, however, subject to various uncertainties, and in particular to the unknown properties and radial distribution of the the clumps in the ejecta., Comment: 13 pages, LaTex, 6 postscript figures, vertical offset changed. We present a new algorithm, called Multiresolution Regularized Expectation Maximization (MREM), for the reconstruction of gamma-ray intensity maps from COMPTEL data. The algorithm is based on the iterative Richardson-Lucy scheme to which we added a wavelet thresholding step in order to eliminate image-noise in the reconstruction. The wavelet thresholding explicitly accounts for spatial correlations in the data, and adapts the angular resolution locally, depending on the significance of the signal in the data. We compare the performance of MREM to that of the maximum entropy and the Richardson-Lucy algorithms by means of Monte-Carlo simulations of COMPTEL 1.809 MeV gamma-ray line observations. The simulations demonstrate that the maximum entropy and Richardson-Lucy algorithms provide virtually identical reconstructions which are heavily disturbed by image noise. MREM largely suppresses this noise in the reconstructions, showing only the significant structures that are present in the data. Application of MREM to COMPTEL 1.8 MeV gamma-ray line data results in a 1.809 MeV sky map that is much smoother than the maximum entropy or Richardson-Lucy reconstructions presented previously. The essential features of this map are (1) an asymmetric galactic ridge emission reaching from l=45 deg to l=240 deg, (2) a bright localised emission feature in the Cygnus region around (l,b)=(80 deg,0 deg), (3) two emission spots at l=317 deg and l=332 deg situated in the galactic plane, and (4) an extended emission region around (l,b)=(160 deg, 0 deg). Comparison of the MREM map to the simulated reconstructions demonstrates that the 1.809 MeV emission is confined to the galactic plane., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, A&A, in press

Deconvolving COMPTEL gamma-ray data into images presents a major methodological challenge. We developed a new algorithm called Multiresolution Regularized Expectation Maximization (MREM), which explicitly accounts for spatial correlations in the image by using wavelets (Dixon et al. 1998). We demonstrate that MREM largely suppresses image noise in the reconstruction, showing only significant structures that are present in the data. We examined the question of a possible correlation between 1.8 MeV emission and intensity distributions observed at other wavelengths by comparing the 1.8 MeV data to an extended set of all-sky maps, covering the entire explored wavelength range from the radio band up to high-energy gamma-rays. This analysis revealed that tracers of the old stellar population or the local interstellar medium provide only a poor description of the data. Tracers of the young stellar population considerably improve the fit. Residuals are minimized for the free-free emission map obtained by the DMR at microwave wavelengths and the 158 um fine-structure line map of C+ observed by FIRAS. Within the statistics of the present data, both maps provide an overall satisfactory fit. We therefore conclude that adequate tracers of 26Al sources have now been identified. Large-scale skymapping with COMPTEL using the full survey database presents challenging problems on account of the complex response and time-variable background. A new approach which attempts to address some of these problems is described, in which the information about each observation is preserved throughout the analysis. In this method, a maximum-entropy algorithm is used to determine image and background simultaneously. Because of the extreme computing requirements, the method has been implemented on a parallel computer, which brings large gains since the response computation is fully parallelizable. We present quantitative statistical evidence for a $\gamma$-ray emission halo surrounding the Galaxy. Maps of the emission are derived. EGRET data were analyzed in a wavelet-based non-parametric hypothesis testing framework, using a model of expected diffuse (Galactic + isotropic) emission as a null hypothesis. The results show a statistically significant large scale halo surrounding the center of the Milky Way as seen from Earth. The halo flux at high latitudes is somewhat smaller than the isotropic gamma-ray flux at the same energy, though of the same order (O(10^(-7)--10^(-6)) ph/cm^2/s/sr above 1 GeV)., Comment: Final version accepted for publication in New Astronomy. We estimate the 1.8 MeV luminosity of the Sco-Cen association due to radioactive decay of 26Al to (4-15) 10e-5 ph cm**-2 s**-1. We propose a low surface brightness, limb brightened bubble for the 1.8 MeV intensity distribution. Gamma-rays from the decay of $^{26}$Al offer a stringent constraint on the Galaxy's global star formation rate over the past million years, supplementing other methods for quantifying the recent Galactic star formation rate, such as equivalent widths of H$\alpha$ emission. Advantages and disadvantages of using $^{26}$Al gamma-ray measurements as a tracer of the massive star formation rate are analyzed. Estimates of the Galactic $^{26}$Al mass derived from COMPTEL measurements are coupled with a simple, analytical model of the $^{26}$Al injection rate from massive stars and restrict the Galaxy's recent star formation rate to \hbox{5 $\pm$ 4 M\sun yr$^{-1}$}. In addition, we show that the derived $^{26}$Al mass implies a present day \hbox{Type II + Ib} supernovae rate of 3.4 $\pm$ 2.8 per century, which seems consistent with other independent estimates of the Galactic core collapse supernova rate. If some independent measure of the massive star initial mass function or star formation rate or \hbox{Type II + Ib} supernovae rate were to become available (perhaps through estimates of the Galactic $^{60}$Fe mass), then a convenient way to restrain, or possibly determine, the other parameters is presented., Comment: 11 pages including 1 figure, ApJ in press

We present an analysis of COMPTEL observations made between November 1991 and May 1994 of 2CG 135+01, a bright gamma-ray source located near the Galactic plane. At energies above 1 MeV, an excess consistent with the position of 2CG 135+01 is detected in the sum of the observations, at flux levels which are a factor of 10-100 below those published in the past. The detection significance of this excess, when the possible presence of underlying Galactic diffuse emission is neglected, is 6.6 sigma for 3 degrees of freedom. The differential photon spectrum in the 1-30 MeV energy range can be described by a power law with a spectral index of $1.95^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$. Due to the uncertainties involved in modelling the Galactic-disk diffuse emission underneath the source, the absolute flux levels must be considered uncertain by a factor of two. They are consistent with the extrapolation of the time-averaged spectrum of 2CG 135+01 measured with EGRET, thereby strengthening the identification. No significant temporal correlation between the gamma-ray emission and the monitored radio emission of the possible counterpart radio source GT 0236+610 (showing a 26.5 day modulation) is found., Comment: 9 pages, uses l-aa.sty, five postscript figures included. COMPTEL imaging analysis revealed a patchy, asymmetric distribution of diffuse 1.8 MeV emission along the Galactic plane, which is attributed to the decay of radioactive 26Al in the ISM. If massive stars were the major source of Galactic 26Al, the 1.8 MeV emission should be asymmetric and trace the spiral arms of the Galaxy, presumed site of massive star formation. Using model fits, we indeed find weak evidence in the COMPTEL data that the observed 1.8 MeV emission is at least partly confined to spiral arms. Significant 1.8 MeV emission from the Carina region has been detected by COMPTEL. The emission is concentrated within 6 degrees or less near the Carina nebula NGC 3372, one of the brightest HII regions known in our Galaxy. This region contains a wealth of extreme young open clusters whose massive stars possibly contributed to an enrichment of 26Al in the ISM within the last few million years. The relation of these clusters and the peculiar object Eta Carinae with the observed emission is discussed.
