Petroleum refiners Tosco Corp, Diamond Shamrock Inc and Total Petroleum (North America) Ltd reported increased earnings from their retail operations for the 3rd qtr of 1995. Tosco's $26.8 million net income for the quarter was a big improvement over the $9.68 million in the 1994 quarter. Diamond Shamrock reported earnings of $5.7 million, down from $20.6 million in 1994, but its retail operations boosted profits from $16 million to $19.8 million. Diamond Shamrock Inc, like most other petroleum refiners except Amerada Hess Corp, doubled its earnings for 1993. Diamond Shamrock's profits rose from $8.7 million to $18.4 million, or 55 cents/share, with 4th qtr profits of $1.8 million. Revenues declined $40 million to $627 million, but operating income was up from $44 million to $57.5 million. Diamond Shamrock Inc's earnings forecast is rising while other independent oil refineries' outlook may be declining for similar reasons, according to Bernard Picchi of Kidder, Peabody. Diamond's growth will be helped by service station and refinery closures in the 1990s, and possibly by acquiring assets left over from these companies. Diamond's earnings are expected to be $1.50 per share in 1993, up from 98 cents per share in 1992.
