The study examined rapid automatized naming (RAN) in 42 children with reading disabilities and 101 control children-all native speakers of Italian, a language with shallow orthography. Third-, 5th- and 6th-grade children were given a RAN test that required rapid naming of color, object, or digit matrices. A visual search test using the same stimulus material (but not requiring a verbal response) and an oral articulation test were also given. Readers with disabilities performed worse than controls on the RAN test. This effect was larger in higher grades than in lower ones. Readers with disabilities were also slower than controls in performing the visual search test. The pattern of results for the RAN test held constant when the visual search performance was partialed out by covariance analysis, indicating the independence of the 2 deficits. The 2 groups did not differ for articulation rate. Finally, analysis of the pattern of intercorrelations indicated that reading speed was most clearly related to RAN, particularly in the group with reading disabilities. Italian dyslexic children are characterized by a pervasive reading speed deficit, with relatively preserved accuracy. This pattern has been associated with predominant use of the nonlexical reading procedure. However, there is no evidence of a deficit in the lexical route of Italian dyslexics. We investigated both lexical and nonlexical reading procedures in dyslexic children through two marker effects, namely, the word frequency effect and the effect of contextual grapheme-to-phoneme conversion rules. Although dyslexics were slower and less accurate than controls, they were affected by word frequency, grapheme contextuality, and their interaction in a similar manner as average readers. These results show the use of lexical reading in Italian dyslexics, and refute the claim of a deficit in whole-word processing with consequent over-reliance on the nonlexical route. The emission of an electron pair upon single-photon absorption requires a finite electron-electron interaction. Therefore, double photoemission is a particularly sensitive tool to study the electron correlation in matter. This is supported by a recent theoretical work which predicts that the pair intensity is a direct reflection of the correlation strength. In order to explore the validity of this statement, we performed a study on a variety of materials. Among them are noble metals, transition metals, and insulators. The latter include transition metal oxides such as CoO and NiO which are also termed highly correlated. We find an increased pair emission rate of NiO and CoO compared to the metals which reach a factor of 10. We also discovered that an increase of the coincidence intensity is accompanied by an increase in the singles count rate. This demonstrates that the electron pair emission is an efficient process at surfaces contributing up to 15% to the single-electron emission in double photoemission. Background: This study evaluates the procedural efficacy and patient experience of Contrast Enhanced Mammography (CEM)-guided biopsies performed in a prone position using the Giotto Class 30,000 system. The emphasis is on the procedural advantages and clinical outcomes for "enhancing-only lesions" (EOLs)., Methods: A retrospective analysis of 524 CEM examinations conducted from December 2023 to June 2024 at a tertiary referral center was performed. Patients referred for pre-surgical staging or evaluation of inconclusive findings from conventional imaging were included. The study utilized dual-energy imaging and vacuum-assisted biopsy techniques, focusing on patients with at least one EOL identified in their initial CEM. Exclusions were based on the absence of a primary or follow-up CEM conducted at our facility Endpoints of this work included procedure efficiency which was evaluated in terms of technical success (biopsy completion with adequate sampling), dose distribution and timing and detection of additional lesions and patients' comfort evaluation, based on the rate of complications (hematomas) and procedure interruption due to patients' specific request or fainting events., Results: Among the evaluated cases, 37 EOLs were biopsied. The average procedure time was 15.8 min. Biopsies were successfully completed in 100% of cases. However, complications occurred in 27% of cases, primarily as hematomas and a significant histological finding rate of 97.3% was recorded., Conclusions: The use of the Giotto Class 30,000 system for CEM-guided biopsies in a prone position demonstrated high procedural success and was well-tolerated by patients, highlighting its potential to enhance procedural comfort and efficiency. Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) stands as an advanced technology embraced by researchers and clinicians to influence thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The prevalent NIBS methods include transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), both proficient in either exciting or depressing neural activities in specific cortical regions. Recently, NIBS has been integrated into hypnosis research with the goal of enhancing hypnotizability. Specifically, the limited existing studies have predominantly focused on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) due to its significant role in neutral hypnosis. Overall, these studies suggest the fascinating potential to alter hypnotizability and hypnotic phenomena, although the impact on responsiveness to suggestions remains modest. In contrast to psychological and pharmacological methods, NIBS enables alterations in hypnotic experiences that are independent of operators and noninvasive. This grants researchers the chance to employ a causal approach in investigating the brain-behavior relationship associated with suggestibility. The present paper evaluates existing NIBS studies in this domain, delving into the neurocognitive mechanisms at play and their potential implications for hypnosis research and practice.

Introduction: Bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Trabecular bone score (TBS) is an additional feature calculated by dual-energy X ray absorption (DXA) that measures texture inhomogeneity at lumbar spine level, providing an index of bone microarchitecture. However, its clinical value still needs to be fully addressed. Aims of the study were to assess BMD and TBS in a cohort of patients with HIV compared to a population of healthy subjects and to investigate the prognostic value of TBS in HIV infected patients., Method: Bone health was assessed by DXA in 165 patients with HIV infection (120 men, mean age 40 ± 7 years) and in 164 healthy subjects (53 male, mean age 37 ± 10 years). BMD was measured at level of lumbar spine (L1-L4), femoral neck and total hip. TBS was computed from the images of lumbar spine using machine proprietary software., Results: BMD at femoral neck level was similar in HIV infected patients and healthy subjects ( p  = 0.57), whereas BMD measured in total femur was lower in HIV infected patients compared to healthy subjects ( p  < 0.05). Although mean BMD in lumbar spine was similar between HIV infected patients and healthy subjects ( p  = 0.90), mean lumbar TBS was lower in patients with HIV infection compared to healthy subjects ( p  < 0.05). Age, sex and HIV infection resulted independent predictors of reduced TBS. In HIV infected patients age, sex and protease inhibitor duration resulted independent predictors of reduced TBS. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAT) plays a crucial role in breast cancer (BC) treatment, both in advanced BC and in early-stage BC, with different rates of pathological complete response (pCR) among the different BC molecular subtypes. Imaging monitoring is mandatory to evaluate the NAT efficacy. This study evaluates the diagnostic performance of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) in BC patients undergoing NAT. This retrospective two-center study included 174 patients. The breast lesions were classified based on the molecular subtypes in hormone receptor (HR+)/HER2-, HER2+, and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The histopathological analysis performed following surgery was used as a reference standard for the pCR. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV were measured overall and for the different subtypes. We enrolled 174 patients, 79/174 (46%) HR+/HER2-, 59/174 (33.9%) HER2+, and 35/174 (20.1%) TNBC; the pCR was found in 64/174 (36.8%), of which 57.1% were TNBCs. In the total population, the CEM sensitivity and specificity were 66.2% and 75.2%, with a PPV of 61.4% and an NPV of 78.8%. The highest specificity (80.9%) and NPV (91.7%) were found in HR+/HER2-, while the highest sensitivity (70%) and PPV appeared (73.7%) in TNBC. The results indicate that CEM is a valid tool to assess the pCR, with different performances among the subtypes of BC.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the enzymatic hydrolysis, performed using Alcalase and Protamex enzymes, on the technological functionalities and the antioxidant capacity of whey protein hydrolysates (WPHs) to identify the conditions allowing to obtain target functionality/ies. Samples were characterized for hydrolysis degree (DH), molecular weight distribution, structural properties, and food-related functionalities. Free sulfhydryl groups and surface hydrophobicity significantly decreased with the increase in DH, regardless of the used enzyme. The foaming and antioxidant properties of Alcalase WPHs were higher as compared to those of WPI, reaching the maximum value at DH = 18-20 %, while higher DH resulted in impaired functionality. Gelling properties were guaranteed when WPI was hydrolysed by Protamex at DH < 15 % while foaming and antioxidant abilities were fostered at 15 < DH < 21 %. These results were well correlated with MW distribution and were rationalized into a road map which represents a useful tool in the selection of proper hydrolysis conditions (time, DH, enzyme type) to obtain WPHs with tailored functionalities.
