We present DESI observations of the inner halo of M31, which reveal the kinematics of a recent merger - a galactic immigration event - in exquisite detail. Of the 11,416 sources studied in 3.75 hour of on-sky exposure time, 7,438 are M31 sources with well measured radial velocities. The observations reveal intricate coherent kinematic structure in the positions and velocities of individual stars: streams, wedges, and chevrons. While hints of coherent structures have been previously detected in M31, this is the first time they have been seen with such detail and clarity in a galaxy beyond the Milky Way. We find clear kinematic evidence for shell structures in the Giant Stellar Stream, the Northeast Shelf and Western Shelf regions. The kinematics are remarkably similar to the predictions of dynamical models constructed to explain the spatial morphology of the inner halo. The results are consistent with the interpretation that much of the substructure in the inner halo of M31 is produced by a single galactic immigration event 1 - 2 Gyr ago. Significant numbers of metal-rich stars ([Fe/H]$>-0.5$) are present in all of the detected substructures, suggesting that the immigrating galaxy had an extended star formation history. We also investigate the ability of the shells and Giant Stellar Stream to constrain the gravitational potential of M31, and estimate the mass within a projected radius of 125 kpc to be ${\rm log_{10}}\, M_{\rm NFW}(<125\,{\rm kpc})/M_\odot = 11.80_{-0.10}^{+0.12}$. In 2021 May, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) began a 5 yr survey of approximately 50 million total extragalactic and Galactic targets. The primary DESI dark-time targets are emission line galaxies (ELGs), luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and quasars (QSOs). In bright time, DESI will focus on two surveys known as the Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) and the Milky Way Survey (MWS). DESI also observes a selection of "secondary" targets for bespoke science goals. This paper gives an overview of the publicly available pipeline (desitarget) used to process targets for DESI observations. Highlights include details of the different DESI survey targeting phases, the targeting ID (TARGETID) used to define unique targets, the bitmasks used to indicate a particular type of target, the data model and structure of DESI targeting files, and examples of how to access and use the desitarget code base. This paper will also describe "supporting" DESI target classes, such as standard stars, sky locations, and random catalogs that mimic the angular selection function of DESI targets. We describe the Milky Way Survey (MWS) that will be undertaken with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) on the Mayall 4m telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. Over the next 5 yr DESI MWS will observe approximately seven million stars at Galactic latitudes |b|>20 degrees, with an inclusive target selection scheme focused on the thick disk and stellar halo. MWS will also include several high-completeness samples of rare stellar types, including white dwarfs, low-mass stars within 100pc of the Sun, and horizontal branch stars. We summarize the potential of DESI to advance understanding of Galactic structure and stellar evolution. We introduce the final definitions of the main MWS target classes and estimate the number of stars in each class that will be observed. We describe our pipelines for deriving radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, and chemical abundances. We use ~500,000 spectra of unique stellar targets from the DESI Survey Validation program (SV) to demonstrate that our pipelines can measure radial velocities to ~1 km/s and [Fe/H] accurate to ~0.2 dex for typical stars in our main sample. Over the next five years, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will use 10 spectrographs with 5000 fibers on the 4m Mayall Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory to conduct the first Stage-IV dark energy galaxy survey. At $z < 0.6$, the DESI Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) will produce the most detailed map of the Universe during the dark energy dominated epoch with redshifts of >10 million galaxies over 14,000 deg$^2$. In this work, we present and validate the final BGS target selection and survey design. From the Legacy Surveys, BGS will target a $r < 19.5$ magnitude-limited sample (BGS Bright); a fainter $19.5 < r < 20.175$ sample, color-selected to have high redshift efficiency (BGS Faint); and a smaller low-z quasar sample. BGS will observe these targets using exposure times, scaled to achieve uniform completeness, and visit each point on the footprint three times. We use observations from the Survey Validation programs conducted prior to the main survey along with realistic simulations to show that BGS can complete its strategy and make optimal use of `bright' time. We demonstrate that BGS targets have stellar contamination <1% and that their densities do not depend strongly on imaging properties. We also confirm that BGS Bright will achieve >80% fiber assignment efficiency. Finally, we show that BGS Bright and Faint will achieve >95% redshift success rates with no significant dependence on observing conditions. BGS meets the requirements for an extensive range of scientific applications. BGS will yield the most precise Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Redshift-Space Distortions measurements at $z < 0.4$. It also presents opportunities to exploit new methods that require highly complete and dense galaxy samples (e.g. N-point statistics, multi-tracers). The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey will measure large-scale structures using quasars as direct tracers of dark matter in the redshift range 0.92.1. We present several methods to select candidate quasars for DESI, using input photometric imaging in three optical bands (g, r, z) from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys and two infrared bands (W1, W2) from the Wide-field Infrared Explorer (WISE). These methods were extensively tested during the Survey Validation of DESI. In this paper, we report on the results obtained with the different methods and present the selection we optimized for the DESI main survey. The final quasar target selection is based on a Random Forest algorithm and selects quasars in the magnitude range 16.599% purity for a nominal effective exposure time of ~1000s. With a 310 per sq. deg. target density, the main selection allows DESI to select more than 200 QSOs per sq. deg. (including 60 quasars with z>2.1), exceeding the project requirements by 20%. We investigate the effects of stellar populations and sizes on Ly$\alpha$ escape in 27 spectroscopically confirmed and 35 photometric Lyman-Alpha Emitters (LAEs) at z $\approx$ 2.65 in seven fields of the Bo\"otes region of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. We use deep $HST$/WFC3 imaging to supplement ground-based observations and infer key galaxy properties. Compared to typical star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at similar redshifts, the LAEs are less massive ($M_{\star} \approx 10^{7} - 10^{9}~M_{\odot}$), younger (ages $\lesssim$ 1 Gyr), smaller ($r_{e} <$ 1 kpc), less dust-attenuated (E(B$-$V) $\le$ 0.26 mag), but have comparable star-formation-rates (SFRs $\approx 1 - 100~M_{\odot} {\rm yr^{-1}}$). Some of the LAEs in the sample may be very young galaxies having low nebular metallicities (${\rm Z_{neb} \lesssim 0.2 Z_{\odot}}$) and/or high ionization parameters ($\log{(\rm U)} \gtrsim -2.4$). Motivated by previous studies, we examine the effects of the concentration of star formation and gravitational potential on Ly$\alpha$ escape, by computing star-formation-rate surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ and specific star-formation-rate surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm sSFR}$. For a given $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, the Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction is higher for LAEs with lower stellar masses. LAEs have higher $\Sigma_{\rm sSFR}$ on average compared to SFGs. Our results suggest that compact star formation in a low gravitational potential yields conditions amenable to the escape of Ly$\alpha$ photons. The discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of Hyperion, a proto-supercluster at z~2.47, provides an unprecedented opportunity to study distant galaxies in the context of their large-scale environment. We carry out deep narrow-band imaging of a ~1*1 deg^2 region around Hyperion and select 157 Lya emitters (LAEs). The inferred LAE overdensity is delta_g~40 within an effective volume of 30*20*15 cMpc^3, consistent with the fact that Hyperion is composed of multiple protoclusters and will evolve into a super-cluster with a total mass of M_tot ~1.4*10^15 M_sun at z=0. The distribution of LAEs closely mirrors that of known spectroscopic members, tracing the protocluster cores and extended filamentary arms connected to them, suggesting that they trace the same large-scale structure. By cross-correlating the LAE positions with HI tomography data, we find weak evidence that LAEs may be less abundant in the highest HI regions, perhaps because Lya is suppressed in such regions. The Hyperion region hosts a large population of active galactic nuclei (AGN), ~12 times more abundant than that in the field. The prevalence of AGN in protocluster regions hints at the possibility that they may be triggered by physical processes that occur more frequently in dense environments, such as galaxy mergers. Our study demonstrates LAEs as reliable markers of the largest cosmic structures. When combined with ongoing and upcoming imaging and spectroscopic surveys, wide-field narrow-band imaging has the potential to advance our knowledge in the formation and evolution of cosmic structures and of their galaxy inhabitants.

Understanding the mechanical response and failure of consolidated extra-terrestrial soils requires analyses of the interactions between propagating cracks the material's inherent pore structure. In this work, we investigate the fracture behaviour of lunar soil simulant consolidated using microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP). We develop a numerical framework, based on a lattice network with local beam elements, to simulate the nucleation, propagation, branching and merging of multiple cracks within the sample. Our simulations capture the effects of local pores on crack paths as well as provides a means to predict the behaviour of samples with varying global porosity and/or uncertainties in local material stiffness. We identify multiple statistical lattice parameters that encode signatures of single or multiple crack growth events. Our results reveal the complexities involved in the fracture process with porous brittle solids and may easily be adapted to understand failure mechanisms and micro/macro crack evolution in other consolidated structures., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

A system of 5,020 robotic fiber positioners was installed in 2019 on the Mayall Telescope, at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The robots automatically re-target their optical fibers every 10 - 20 minutes, each to a precision of several microns, with a reconfiguration time less than 2 minutes. Over the next five years, they will enable the newly-constructed Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to measure the spectra of 35 million galaxies and quasars. DESI will produce the largest 3D map of the universe to date and measure the expansion history of the cosmos. In addition to the 5,020 robotic positioners and optical fibers, DESI's Focal Plane System includes 6 guide cameras, 4 wavefront cameras, 123 fiducial point sources, and a metrology camera mounted at the primary mirror. The system also includes associated structural, thermal, and electrical systems. In all, it contains over 675,000 individual parts. We discuss the design, construction, quality control, and integration of all these components. We include a summary of the key requirements, the review and acceptance process, on-sky validations of requirements, and lessons learned for future multi-object, fiber-fed spectrographs., Comment: 51 pages, 41 figures

We present a catalog of 5598 ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates with effective radius $r_e > 5.3$ arcsec distributed throughout the southern portion of the DESI Legacy Imaging Survey covering $\sim$ 15000 deg$^2$. The catalog is most complete for physically large ($r_e > 2.5$ kpc) UDGs lying in the redshift range $1800 \lesssim cz/{\rm km\ s}^{-1} \lesssim 7000$, where the lower bound is defined by where incompleteness becomes significant for large objects on the sky and the upper bound by our minimum angular size selection criterion. Because physical size is integral to the definition of a UDG, we develop a method {of distance estimation} using existing redshift surveys. With three different galaxy samples, two of which contain UDGs with spectroscopic redshifts, we estimate that the method has a redshift accuracy of $\sim$ 75% when the method converges, although larger, more representative spectroscopic UDG samples are needed to fully understand the behavior of the method. We are able to estimate distances for 1079 of our UDG candidates (19%). Finally, to illustrate uses of the catalog, we present distance independent and dependent results. In the latter category we establish that the red sequence of UDGs lies on the extrapolation of the red sequence relation for bright ellipticals and that the environment-color relation is at least qualitatively similar to that of high surface brightness galaxies. Despite efforts over several decades, direct-detection experiments have not yet led to the discovery of the dark matter (DM) particle. This has led to increasing interest in alternatives to the Lambda CDM (LCDM) paradigm and alternative DM scenarios (including fuzzy DM, warm DM, self-interacting DM, etc.). In many of these scenarios, DM particles cannot be detected directly and constraints on their properties can ONLY be arrived at using astrophysical observations. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is currently one of the most powerful instruments for wide-field surveys. The synergy of DESI with ESA's Gaia satellite and future observing facilities will yield datasets of unprecedented size and coverage that will enable constraints on DM over a wide range of physical and mass scales and across redshifts. DESI will obtain spectra of the Lyman-alpha forest out to z~5 by detecting about 1 million QSO spectra that will put constraints on clustering of the low-density intergalactic gas and DM halos at high redshift. DESI will obtain radial velocities of 10 million stars in the Milky Way (MW) and Local Group satellites enabling us to constrain their global DM distributions, as well as the DM distribution on smaller scales. The paradigm of cosmological structure formation has been extensively tested with simulations. However, the majority of simulations to date have focused on collisionless CDM. Simulations with alternatives to CDM have recently been gaining ground but are still in their infancy. While there are numerous publicly available large-box and zoom-in simulations in the LCDM framework, there are no comparable publicly available WDM, SIDM, FDM simulations. Numerical simulations with varying realism indicate an emergent principle -- multiphase condensation and large cavity power occur when the ratio of the cooling time to the free-fall time ($t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$) falls below a threshold value close to 10. Observations indeed show cool-core signatures when this ratio falls below 20-30, but the prevalence of cores with $t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$ ratio below 10 is rare as compared to simulations. In X-ray observations, we obtain projected spectra from which we have to infer radial gas density and temperature profiles. Using idealized models of X-ray cavities and multiphase gas in the core and 3-D hydro jet-ICM simulations, we quantify the biases introduced by deprojection based on the assumption of spherical symmetry in determining $t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$. We show that while the used methods are able to recover the $t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$ ratio for relaxed clusters, they have an uncertainty of a factor of $2-3$ in systems containing large cavities ($\gtrsim 20$ kpc). We also show that the mass estimates from these methods, in the absence of X-ray spectra close to the virial radius, suffer from a degeneracy between the virial mass ($M_{200}$) and the concentration parameter ($c$) in the form of $M_{200} c^2 \approx$ constant. Additionally, lack of soft-X-ray ($\lesssim 0.5$ keV) coverage and poor spatial resolution make us overestimate min($t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$) by a factor of few in clusters with min($t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$) $\lesssim 5$. This bias can largely explain the lack of cool-core clusters with min($t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff}$) $\lesssim 5$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Comments are welcome

We present 226 large ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates ($r_e > 5.3$\arcsec, $\mu_{0,g} > 24$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$) in the SDSS Stripe 82 region recovered using our improved procedure developed in anticipation of processing the entire Legacy Surveys footprint. The advancements include less constrained structural parameter fitting, expanded wavelet filtering criteria, consideration of Galactic dust, estimates of parameter uncertainties and completeness based on simulated sources, and refinements of our automated candidate classification. We have a sensitivity $\sim$1 mag fainter in $\mu_{0,g}$ than the largest published catalog of this region. Using our completeness-corrected sample, we find that (1) there is no significant decline in the number of UDG candidates as a function of $\mu_{0,g}$ to the limit of our survey ($\sim$ 26.5 mag arcsec$^{-2}$); (2) bluer candidates have smaller S\'ersic $n$; (3) most blue ($g-r < 0.45$ mag) candidates have $\mu_{0,g} \lesssim 25$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and will fade to populate the UDG red sequence we observe to $\sim 26.5$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$; (4) any red UDGs that exist significantly below our $\mu_{0,g}$ sensitivity limit are not descended from blue UDGs in our sample; and (5) candidates with lower $\mu_{0,g}$ tend to smaller $n$. We present a detailed characterization of the Lya properties for 93 Lya emitters (LAEs) at z~3.1 selected from the D1 field of the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope Legacy Survey, including 24 members of a massive protocluster. The median-stacked Lya image shows an extended Lya halo (LAH) surrounding the galaxy with the exponential scale length 4.9+/-0.7kpc, which accounts for roughly half of the total line flux. Accounting for the LAH contribution, the total Lya escape fraction, f_esc, is 40+/-26%. Combining the dataset with existing measurements, we find a dependence of f_esc on the galaxy's UV slope (beta) and UV luminosity (L_UV). The simultaneous use of both parameters allows prediction of f_esc within 0.18dex, a substantial improvement over 0.23dex when only beta is used. The correlation between f_esc and E(B-V) suggests that Lya photons undergo interstellar dust attenuation in a similar manner to continuum photons. Yet, Lya transmission is typically higher than that expected for continuum photons at similar wavelength by a factor, which depends on UV luminosity, up to 2 in the samples we studied. These results hint at complex geometries and physical conditions of the interstellar medium, which affect the Lya transmission or production. Alternatively, the dust law may change with luminosity leading to over-or under-estimation of f_esc. Finally, we report that protocluster member LAEs tend to be bluer and more UV-luminous than their field cousins, resulting in systematically higher f_esc values. Mergers and tidal interactions between massive galaxies and their dwarf satellites are a fundamental prediction of the Lambda-Cold Dark Matter cosmology. These events are thought to provide important observational diagnostics of nonlinear structure formation. Stellar streams in the Milky Way and Andromeda are spectacular evidence for ongoing satellite disruption. However, constructing a statistically meaningful sample of tidal streams beyond the Local Group has proven a daunting observational challenge, and the full potential for deepening our understanding of galaxy assembly using stellar streams has yet to be realised. Here we introduce the Stellar Stream Legacy Survey, a systematic imaging survey of tidal features associated with dwarf galaxy accretion around a sample of ~3100 nearby galaxies within z~0.02, including about 940 Milky Way analogues. Our survey exploits public deep imaging data from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, which reach surface brightness as faint as ~29 mag/arcsec^2 in the r band. As a proof of concept of our survey, we report the detection and broad-band photometry of 24 new stellar streams in the local Universe. We discuss how these observations can yield new constraints on galaxy formation theory through comparison to mock observations from cosmological galaxy simulations. Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies (LAEs) are easily detectable in the high-redshift Universe and are potentially efficient tracers of large scale structure at early epochs, as long as their observed properties do not strongly depend on environment. We investigate the luminosity and equivalent width functions of LAEs in the overdense field of a protocluster at redshift $z \simeq 3.78$. Using a large sample of LAEs (many spectroscopically confirmed), we find that the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity distribution is well-represented by a Schechter (1976) function with $\log(L^{\ast}/{\rm erg s^{-1}}) = 43.26^{+0.20}_{-0.22}$ and $\log(\phi^{\ast}/{\rm Mpc^{-3}})=-3.40^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$ with $\alpha=-1.5$. Fitting the equivalent width distribution as an exponential, we find a scale factor of $\omega=79^{+15}_{-15}$ Angstroms. We also measured the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity and equivalent width functions using the subset of LAEs lying within the densest cores of the protocluster, finding similar values for $L^*$ and $\omega$. Hence, despite having a mean overdensity more than 2$\times$ that of the general field, the shape of the Ly$\alpha$ luminosity function and equivalent width distributions in the protocluster region are comparable to those measured in the field LAE population by other studies at similar redshift. While the observed Ly$\alpha$ luminosities and equivalent widths show correlations with the UV continuum luminosity in this LAE sample, we find that these are likely due to selection biases and are consistent with no intrinsic correlations within the sample. This protocluster sample supports the strong evolutionary trend observed in the Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction and suggest that lower redshift LAEs can be on average significantly more dusty that their counterparts at higher redshift., Comment: Updated version to match the one accepted by ApJ

In preparation for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a new top end was installed on the Mayall 4-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The refurbished telescope and the DESI instrument were successfully commissioned on sky between 2019 October and 2020 March. Here we describe the pointing, tracking and imaging performance of the Mayall telescope equipped with its new DESI prime focus corrector, as measured by six guider cameras sampling the outer edge of DESI's focal plane. Analyzing ~500,000 guider images acquired during commissioning, we find a median delivered image FWHM of 1.1 arcseconds (in the r-band at 650 nm), with the distribution extending to a best-case value of ~0.6 arcseconds. The point spread function is well characterized by a Moffat profile with a power-law index of $\beta$ ~ 3.5 and little dependence of $\beta$ on FWHM. The shape and size of the PSF delivered by the new corrector at a field angle of 1.57 degrees are very similar to those measured with the old Mayall corrector on axis. We also find that the Mayall achieves excellent pointing accuracy (several arcseconds RMS) and minimal open-loop tracking drift (< 1 milliarcsecond per second), improvements on the telecope's pre-DESI performance. We announce the second data release (DR2) of the NOIRLab Source Catalog (NSC), using 412,116 public images from CTIO-4m+DECam, the KPNO-4m+Mosaic3 and the Bok-2.3m+90Prime. NSC DR2 contains over 3.9 billion unique objects, 68 billion individual source measurements, covers $\approx$35,000 square degrees of the sky, has depths of $\approx$23rd magnitude in most broadband filters with $\approx$1-2% photometric precision, and astrometric accuracy of $\approx$7 mas. Approximately 1.9 billion objects within $\approx$30,000 square degrees of sky have photometry in three or more bands. There are several improvements over NSC DR1. DR2 includes 156,662 (61%) more exposures extending over 2 more years than in DR1. The southern photometric zeropoints in $griz$ are more accurate by using the Skymapper DR1 and ATLAS-Ref2 catalogs, and improved extinction corrections were used for high-extinction regions. In addition, the astrometric accuracy is improved by taking advantage of Gaia DR2 proper motions when calibrating the WCS of individual images. This improves the NSC proper motions to $\sim$2.5 mas/yr (precision) and $\sim$0.2 mas/yr (accuracy). The combination of sources into unique objects is performed using a DBSCAN algorithm and mean parameters per object (such as mean magnitudes, proper motion, etc.) are calculated more robustly with outlier rejection. Finally, eight multi-band photometric variability indices are calculated for each object and variable objects are flagged (23 million objects). NSC DR2 will be useful for exploring solar system objects, stellar streams, dwarf satellite galaxies, QSOs, variable stars, high-proper motion stars, and transients. The DESI survey will observe more than 8 million candidate luminous red galaxies (LRGs) in the redshift range $0.3

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will execute a nearly magnitude-limited survey of low redshift galaxies ($0.05 \leq z \leq 0.4$, median $z \approx 0.2$). Clustering analyses of this Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) will yield the most precise measurements to date of baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions at low redshift. DESI will precisely constrain cosmic expansion and the growth of structure by collecting $\sim$35 million redshifts across $\sim$80% of cosmic history and one third of the sky to study Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Redshift Space Distortions (RSD). We present a preliminary target selection for an Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) sample, which will comprise about half of all DESI tracers. The selection consists of a $g$-band magnitude cut and a $(g-r)$ vs. $(r-z)$ color box, which we validate using HSC/PDR2 photometric redshifts and DEEP2 spectroscopy. The ELG target density should be $\sim$2400 deg$^{-2}$, with $\sim$65% of ELG redshifts reliably within a redshift range of $0.6

The DESI survey will measure large-scale structure using quasars as direct tracers of dark matter in the redshift range $0.92.1$. The DESI Milky Way Survey (MWS) will observe $\ge$8 million stars between $16 < r < 19$ mag, supplemented by observations of brighter targets under poor observing conditions. The survey will permit an accurate determination of stellar kinematics and population gradients; characterize diffuse substructure in the thick disk and stellar halo; enable the discovery of extremely metal-poor stars and other rare stellar types; and improve constraints on the Galaxy's 3D dark matter distribution from halo star kinematics. We present the steps taken to produce a reliable and complete input galaxy catalogue for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) using the photometric Legacy Survey DR8 DECam. We analyse some of the main issues faced in the selection of targets for the DESI BGS, such as star-galaxy separation, contamination by fragmented stars and bright galaxies. Our pipeline utilizes a new way to select BGS galaxies using Gaia photometry and we implement geometrical and photometric masks that reduce the number of spurious objects. The resulting catalogue is cross-matched with the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to assess the completeness of the galaxy catalogue and the performance of the target selection. We also validate the clustering of the sources in our BGS catalogue by comparing with mock catalogues and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. Finally, the robustness of the BGS selection criteria is assessed by quantifying the dependence of the target galaxy density on imaging and other properties. We present the Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) sample of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV Data Release 16 (DR16). After describing the observations and redshift measurement for the 269,243 observed ELG spectra over 1170 deg$^2$, we present the large-scale structure catalogues, which are used for the cosmological analysis. These catalogues contain 173,736 reliable spectroscopic redshifts between 0.6 and 1.1, along with the associated random catalogues quantifying the extent of observations, and the appropriate weights to correct for non-cosmological fluctuations. We perform a spherically averaged baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurement in configuration space, with density field reconstruction: the data 2-point correlation function shows a feature consistent with that of the BAO, providing a 3.2-percent measurement of the spherically averaged BAO distance $D_V(z_{\rm eff})/r_{\rm drag} = 18.23\pm 0.58$ at the effective redshift $z_{\rm eff}=0.845$., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. Massive galaxy clusters undergo strong evolution from z~1.6 to z~0.5, with overdense environments at high-z characterized by abundant dust-obscured star formation and stellar mass growth which rapidly give way to widespread quenching. Data spanning the near- to far-infrared (IR) spectrum can directly trace this transformation; however, such studies have largely been limited to the massive galaxy end of cluster populations. In this work, we present ``total light" stacking techniques spanning 3.4-500{\mu}m aimed at revealing the total cluster IR emission, including low mass members and potential intracluster dust. We detail our procedures for WISE, Spitzer, and Herschel imaging, including corrections to recover the total stacked emission in the case of high fractions of detected galaxies. We apply our stacking techniques to 232 well-studied massive (log M200/Msun~13.8) clusters across multiple z bins, recovering extended cluster emission at all wavelengths, typically at >5sigma. We measure the averaged near- to far-IR radial profiles and SEDs, quantifying the total stellar and dust content. The near-IR radial profiles are well described by an NFW model with a high (c~7) concentration parameter. Dust emission is similarly concentrated, albeit suppressed at small radii (r<0.2Mpc). The measured SEDs lack warm dust, consistent with the colder SEDs expected for low mass galaxies. We derive total stellar masses consistent with the theoretical Mhalo-M_star relation and specific-star formation rates that evolve strongly with redshift, echoing that of massive (log Mstar/Msun>10) cluster galaxies. Separating out the massive galaxy population reveals that the majority of cluster far-IR emission (~70-80%) is provided by the low mass constituents, which differs from field galaxies. We present neutral hydrogen (HI) observations using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) of 70 optically-detected UDG candidates in the Coma region from the Systematically Measuring Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies survey (SMUDGes). We detect HI in 18 targets, confirming 9 to be gas-rich UDGs and the remainder to be foreground dwarfs. None of our HI-detected UDGs are Coma Cluster members and all but one are in low-density environments. The HI-detected UDGs are bluer and have more irregular morphologies than the redder, smoother candidates not detected in HI, with the combination of optical color and morphology being a better predictor of gas richness than either parameter alone. There is little visual difference between the gas-rich UDGs and the foreground dwarfs in the SMUDGes imaging, and distances are needed to distinguish between them. We find that the gas richnesses of our HI-confirmed UDGs and those from other samples scale with their effective radii in two stellar mass bins, possibly providing clues to their formation. We attempt to place our UDGs on the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) using optical ellipticities and turbulence-corrected HI linewidths to estimate rotation velocities, but the potential systematics associated with fitting smooth $\mathrm{S\acute{e}rsic}$ profiles to clumpy, low-inclination low surface brightness disks precludes a meaningful analysis of potential BTFR offsets. These observations are a pilot for a large campaign now underway at the GBT to use the HI properties of gas-rich UDGs to quantitatively constrain how these galaxies form and evolve., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. The Legacy Surveys, a combination of three ground-based imaging surveys, have mapped 16,000 deg$^2$ in three optical bands ($g$, $r$, and $z$) to a depth 1--$2$~mag deeper than the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our work addresses one of the major challenges of wide-field imaging surveys conducted at ground-based observatories: the varying depth that results from varying observing conditions at Earth-bound sites. To mitigate these effects, two of the Legacy Surveys (the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey, or DECaLS; and the Mayall $z$-band Legacy Survey, or MzLS) employed a unique strategy to dynamically adjust the exposure times as rapidly as possible in response to the changing observing conditions. We present the tiling and observing strategies used by these surveys. We evaluate the impact of imaging systematics on the clustering of luminous red galaxies (LRG), emission-line galaxies (ELG) and quasars (QSO) targeted for the upcoming Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. Using Data Release 7 of the DECam Legacy Survey, we study the effects of astrophysical foregrounds, stellar contamination, differences between north galactic cap and south galactic cap measurements, and variations in imaging depth, stellar density, galactic extinction, seeing, airmass, sky brightness, and exposure time before presenting survey masks and weights to mitigate these effects. With our sanitized samples in hand, we conduct a preliminary analysis of the clustering amplitude and evolution of the DESI main targets. From measurements of the angular correlation functions, we determine power law fits $r_0 = 7.78 \pm 0.26$ $h^{-1}$Mpc, $\gamma = 1.98 \pm 0.02$ for LRGs and $r_0 = 5.45 \pm 0.1$ $h^{-1}$Mpc, $\gamma = 1.54 \pm 0.01$ for ELGs. Additionally, from the angular power spectra, we measure the linear biases and model the scale dependent biases in the weakly nonlinear regime. Both sets of clustering measurements show good agreement with survey requirements for LRGs and ELGs, attesting that these samples will enable DESI to achieve precise cosmological constraints. Stars that escape globular clusters form tidal tails that are predominantly shaped by the global distribution of mass in the Galaxy, but also preserve a historical record of small-scale perturbations. Using deep $grz$ photometry from DECaLS, we present highly probable members of the tidal tails associated with the disrupting globular cluster Palomar 5. These data yield the cleanest view of a stellar stream beyond $\sim20\,\rm kpc$ and reveal: (1) a wide, low surface-brightness extension of the leading tail; (2) significant density variations along the stream; and (3) sharp changes in the direction of both the leading and the trailing tail. In the fiducial Milky Way model, a rotating bar perturbs the Palomar 5 tails and can produce streams with similar width and density profiles to those observed. However, the deviations of the stream track in this simple model do not match those observed in the Palomar 5 trailing tail, indicating the need for an additional source of perturbation. These discoveries open up the possibility of measuring the population of perturbers in the Milky Way, including dark-matter subhalos, with an ensemble of stellar streams and deep photometry alone., Comment: 4 figures, 12 pages; submitted to AAS Journals

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a wide and deep imaging survey to cover a 5400 deg$^2$ area in the Northern Galactic Cap with the 2.3m Bok telescope using two filters ($g$ and $r$ bands). The Mosaic $z$-band Legacy Survey (MzLS) covers the same area in $z$ band with the 4m Mayall telescope. These two surveys will be used for spectroscopic targeting of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). The BASS survey observations were completed in 2019 March. This paper describes the third data release (DR3) of BASS, which contains the photometric data from all BASS and MzLS observations between 2015 January and 2019 March. The median astrometric precision relative to {\it Gaia} positions is about 17 mas and the median photometric offset relative to the PanSTARRS1 photometry is within 5 mmag. The median $5\sigma$ AB magnitude depths for point sources are 24.2, 23.6, and 23.0 mag for $g$, $r$, and $z$ bands, respectively. The photometric depth within the survey area is highly homogeneous, with the difference between the 20\% and 80\% depth less than 0.3 mag. We present the status of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and its plans and opportunities for the coming decade. DESI construction and its initial five years of operations are an approved experiment of the US Department of Energy and is summarized here as context for the Astro2020 panel. Beyond 2025, DESI will require new funding to continue operations. We expect that DESI will remain one of the world's best facilities for wide-field spectroscopy throughout the decade. We describe present and future capabilities of the Mid-Scale Observatories (MSO) of the new national center merging NOAO, Gemini Observatory and LSST Operations. MSO is comprised of Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (CTIO) and the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO). Telescopes at both sites currently operate on a mix of public and private funding. In the hierarchical theory of galaxy formation, a galaxy overdensity is a hallmark of a massive cosmic structure. However, it is less well understood how different types of galaxies trace the underlying large-scale structure. Motivated by the discovery of a z=3.13 protocluster, we examine how the same structure is populated by Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies (LAEs). To this end, we have undertaken a deep narrow-band imaging survey sampling Ly$\alpha$ emission at this redshift. Of the 93 LAE candidates within a 36'x36'~(70x70~Mpc^2) field, 21 galaxies form a significant surface overdensity (delta_g=3.3+/-0.9), which is spatially segregated from the Lyman break galaxy (LBG) overdensity. One possible interpretation is that they trace two separate structures of comparable masses (~ 10^{15}M_sun) where the latter is hosted by a halo assembled at an earlier time. We speculate that the dearth of LAEs in the LBG overdensity region may signal the role of halo assembly bias in galaxy formation, which would suggest that different search techniques may be biased accordingly to the formation age or dynamical state of the host halo. The median Ly$\alpha$- and UV luminosity is 30--70\% higher for the protocluster LAEs relative to the field. This difference cannot be explained by the galaxy overdensity alone, and may require a top-heavy mass function, higher star formation efficiency for protocluster halos, or suppression of galaxy formation in low-mass halos. A luminous Ly$\alpha$ blob and an ultramassive galaxy found in this region paint a picture consistent with the expected early growth of galaxies in clusters., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $\sigma(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. By utilizing large-scale graph analytic tools implemented in the modern Big Data platform, Apache Spark, we investigate the topological structure of gravitational clustering in five different universes produced by cosmological $N$-body simulations with varying parameters: (1) a WMAP 5-year compatible $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, (2) two different dark energy equation of state variants, and (3) two different cosmic matter density variants. For the Big Data calculations, we use a custom build of stand-alone Spark/Hadoop cluster at Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) and Dataproc Compute Engine in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with the sample size ranging from 7 millions to 200 millions. We find that among the many possible graph-topological measures, three simple ones: (1) the average of number of neighbors (the so-called average vertex degree) $\alpha$, (2) closed-to-connected triple fraction (the so-called transitivity) $\tau_\Delta$, and (3) the cumulative number density $n_{s\ge5}$ of subcomponents with connected component size $s \ge 5$, can effectively discriminate among the five model universes. Since these graph-topological measures are in direct relation with the usual $n$-points correlation functions of the cosmic density field, graph-topological statistics powered by Big Data computational infrastructure opens a new, intuitive, and computationally efficient window into the dark Universe., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We investigate the spatial distribution of Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at $z \approx 2.67$, selected from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS), using two-point statistics and topological diagnostics adopted from network science. We measure the clustering length, $r_0 \approx 4 h^{-1}$ Mpc, and the bias, $b_{LAE} = 2.2^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$. Fitting the clustering with halo occupation distribution (HOD) models results in two disparate possibilities: (1) where the fraction of central galaxies is $<$1% in halos of mass $>10^{12}$$M_\odot$; and (2) where the fraction is $\approx$20%. We refer to these two scenarios as the `Dusty Core Scenario' for Model#1 since most of central galaxies in massive halos are dead in Ly$\alpha$ emission, and the `Pristine Core Scenario' for Model#2 since the central galaxies are bright in Ly$\alpha$ emission. Traditional two-point statistics cannot distinguish between these disparate models given the current data sets. To overcome this degeneracy, we generate mock catalogs for each HOD model using a high resolution $N$-body simulation and adopt a network statistics approach, which provides excellent topological diagnostics for galaxy point distributions. We find three topological anomalies from the spatial distribution of observed LAEs, which are not reproduced by the HOD mocks. We find that Model#2 matches better all network statistics than Model#1, suggesting that the central galaxies in $> 10^{12} h^{-1} M_\odot$ halos at $z \approx 2.67$ need to be less dusty to be bright as LAEs, potentially implying some replenishing channels of pristine gas such as the cold mode accretion., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present a homogeneous catalog of 275 large (effective radius $\gtrsim$ 5.3 arcsec) ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates lying within an $\approx$ 290 square degree region surrounding the Coma cluster. The catalog results from our automated postprocessing of data from the Legacy Surveys, a three-band imaging survey covering 14,000 square degrees of the extragalactic sky. We describe a pipeline that identifies UDGs and provides their basic parameters. The survey is as complete in these large UDGs as previously published UDG surveys of the central region of the Coma cluster. We conclude that the majority of our detections are at roughly the distance of the Coma cluster, implying effective radii $\ge 2.5$ kpc, and that our sample contains a significant number of analogs of DF 44, where the effective radius exceeds 4 kpc, both within the cluster and in the surrounding field. The $g-z$ color of our UDGs spans a large range, suggesting that even large UDGs may reflect a range of formation histories. A majority of the UDGs are consistent with being lower stellar mass analogs of red sequence galaxies, but we find both red and blue UDG candidates in the vicinity of the Coma cluster and a relative overabundance of blue UDG candidates in the lower density environments and the field.
