Abstract

This article presents a study, which focuses on the use of human skin in in vitro testing of the efficacy of sunblocks in protecting langerhans cells from UV induced damage. In this study surgical skin samples were used to test the efficacy of sunblocks in preventing immunological damage to Langerhans cell function in vitro. Human skin renxjved at cosmetic surgical operations was collected immediately and washed in sterile PBS. The skin with underlying subcutaneous tissue was cut into 1.5cm squares and placed in sterile humidity chambers.

Abstract

This article studies the effect of commercial sun-blocks in preventing UV damage to langerhans cell function in vivo. Four commercially available, factor 15 sunblocks--2 reflectant (A and B) and 2 absorbant (C and D)--were tested for their efficacy in preventing UV induced damage to Langerhans cells function. 7 healthy volunteers were used. Subsequently, the right forearm eas fitted with a sheild with 6 cut out squares--one was blanked off, one untreated and sunblocks A, B, C and D were used under the other 4 squares. The arm was then irradiated for 3 MEDs.

Abstract

ilvIH of Escherichia coli K12 codes for a valine-sensitive acetohydroxy acid synthase (AHASIII). The DNA sequence of ilvIH was determined. Open reading frames and appropriate translation signals exist for two polypeptides, one containing 565 amino acids (ilvI polypeptide) and the other 160 amino acids (ilvH polypeptide). A graphic matrix analysis shows three clearcut regions of homology between ilvI and ilvG (codes for AHASII). Within these three regions of homology, 50-60% of the amino acid sequences of AHASII and AHASIII are conserved. Inspection of the region between ilvG and ilvE (the K region) revealed that it can potentially code for an 86 amino acid polypeptide. A computer analysis shows small but significant homology between the predicted amino acid sequences of the N-terminal half of the ilvH polypeptide and the putative region K polypeptide. We conclude that ilvIH and ilvG-region K evolved from a common ancestor.

Abstract

A dilemma exists when a doctor is faced with a child or young person who refuses medically indicated treatment. The Gillick case has been interpreted by many to mean that a child of sufficient age and intelligence could validly consent or refuse consent to treatment. Recent decisions of the Court of Appeal on a child's refusal of medical treatment have clouded the issue and undermined the spirit of the Gillick decision and the Children Act 1989. It is now the case that a child patient whose competence is in doubt will be found rational if he or she accepts the proposal to treat but may be found incompetent if he or she disagrees. Practitioners are alerted to the anomalies now exhibited by the law on the issue of children's consent and refusal. The impact of the decisions from the perspectives of medicine, ethics, and the law are examined. Practitioners should review each case of child care carefully and in cases of doubt seek legal advice.
