A laboratory exercise is described that helps students learn about lipid self-assembly by making vesicles under different solution conditions. Concepts covering the chemical properties of different lipids, the dynamics of lipids, and vesicle stability are explored. Further, the described protocol is easy and cheap to implement. One to two laboratory periods of 4 hours each are sufficient to perform the experiments.

The selection of patients undergoing cytoreductive- surgery (CRS) followed by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is crucial. BIOSCOPE and COMPASS are prognostic scores designed to stratify survival into four classes according to clinical and pathological features. The purpose of this study is to analyze the prognostic role of these scores using a large cohort of patients as an external reference. Overall survival analysis was performed using Log-Rank and Kaplan-Meier curves for each score. The probability of survival at 12, 36, and 60 months was tested using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to determine sensitivity and specificity. From the validation cohort of 437 patients, the analysis included 410 patients in the COMPASS group and 364 patients in the BIOSCOPE group (100% data completeness). We observed a different patient distribution between classes (high-risk for BIOSCOPE compared to COMPASS, p = 0.0001). Nevertheless, both COMPASS and BIOSCOPE effectively stratified overall survival (Log-Rank, p = 0.0001 in both cases), with a lack of discrimination between COMPASS classes II and III (p = n.s.). COMPASS at 12 m and BIOSCOPE at 60 m showed the best performance in terms of survival prediction (AUC of 0.82 and 0.81). The specificity of the two tests is good (median 81.3%), whereas sensibility is quite low (median 64.2%). Following external validation in a large population of patients with CRC-PM who are eligible for surgery, the COMPASS and BIOSCOPE scores exhibit high inter-test variability but effectively stratify cancer-related mortality risk. While the quality of the scores is similar, BIOSCOPE shows better inter-tier differentiation, suggesting that tumor molecular classification could improve test discrimination capability. Two studies documented gender differences in preschool children's responses to situations of vulnerability. Children playing with same sex friends showed no sex differences in time responding to vulnerability; some sex differences were noted in response type. Children's preferences for vignettes representing categories of response to the same vulnerability situation (dominant mastery, nurturant mastery, sharing problems) indicated gender differences. Environmental safety has become a major concern in recent years due to the global increase in microplastic pollution. These ubiquitous, tiny, and potentially toxic plastic particles enter aquatic environments through weathering of larger plastics and the release of microbeads. Although numerous studies have focused on microplastic pollution in developed regions, information from developing countries remains limited. This study assessed the presence of MPs and associated oxidative stress responses in two commercial fish species, Clarias gariepinus (Catfish) and Oreochromis niloticus (Nile Tilapia), from Kubanni reservoir, Zaria, Nigeria, over six months spanning both the dry and rainy seasons. Fibers were identified as the most abundant MP particles, followed by fragments, films, and beads, in the order of fibers > fragments > films > beads. The highest fiber concentrations were recorded in the gills, with Clarias garipinus showing 11.5 MP items/individual and Oreochromis niloticus showing 22.5 MP items/individual. Black microplastics were predominant, and the most common ingested MP ranged from 1.0 to 2.0 mm. The primary polymers identified were polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate. Evidence of oxidative stress and cellular damage was observed in the gills, liver, and dorsal muscles of both fish species, which correlated with MPs ingestion. According to recommendations from the European Food Safety Authority regarding fish consumption by children and adults, individuals consuming Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus from the Kubanni reservoir may be exposed to between 70 and 700 MP items/organ. The risk associated with consuming MPs found in fish gills and guts was notably higher, posing significant concerns for human health. This study provides insights into microplastic contamination in commercially important fish from the Kubanni Reservoir and highlights the environmental and public health risks associated with consuming contaminated fish from this ecosystem. The increasing prevalence of Anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS) among women, driven by the pursuit of improved body aesthetics, characterized by higher lean mass and reduced adipose tissue, raises significant health concerns, particularly due to the limited knowledge regarding their effects on the female organism. Prolonged use and/or high doses of AAS are linked to various harmful side effects, including mood changes, psychiatric disorders, voice deepening, clitoromegaly, menstrual irregularities, and cardiovascular complications, prompting medical societies to discourage their widespread use due to insufficient evidence supporting their safety and efficacy. Studies in female rodents have shown that AAS can lead to increased aggression, inflammation, reduced neuronal density, and negative impacts on the myocardium and blood vessels. Additionally, maternal administration of androgens during pregnancy can adversely affect offspring's reproductive, neuronal, and metabolic health, resulting in long-term impairments. The complexity of the mechanisms underlying AAS effects, and their potential genotoxicity remains poorly understood. This review aims to elucidate the various ways in which AAS can impact female physiology and that of their offspring, highlight commonly used anabolic substances, and discuss the positions of medical societies regarding AAS use. Teaching metabolism to a biochemistry class with diverse academic backgrounds is a challenging task. Often students lack the global perspective that is needed to understand how different metabolic pathways are reciprocally regulated. The classroom activity presented in this article is designed to facilitate the learning of metabolism by having the students actively engaged in the process of building an integrated cell map. Background: Eosinophilic dermatosis of hematologic malignancy (EDHM) is a rare dermatosis associated with blood tumors.Objective: To characterize the expression of T-cell and B-cell markers and pruritogenic mediators in EDHM skin.Methods: Immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence analysis were performed in 12 skin samples of EDHM, 11 samples of bullous pemphigoid (BP), and 5 samples from healthy controls (HC). Serum levels of interleukin (IL) 4 were analyzed in 11 patients with EDHM, 11 BP patients, and 5 HC by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Results: T-cell markers, including clusters of differentiation (CD) 3, CD4, CD8, and CD5 were significantly overexpressed in EDHM and BP skin compared to HC. A predominance of CD4+ over CD8+ cells and GATA3+ (helper T cell type 2 [Th2] marker) over T-bet+ (Th1 marker) cells were observed. FOXP3 expression was increased but the FOXP3/CD4 ratio was low. B-cell markers were under-represented, without significant differences between the 3 groups. IL-4 and IL-31 were significantly overexpressed in EDHM and BP compared to HC and colocalized with the Th2-associated marker GATA3. Eotaxin-1 was significantly overexpressed in EDHM compared to BP and HC. IL-4 serum concentration was significantly increased in EDHM and BP compared to HC.Limitations: Small sample size; retrospective design.Conclusions: Targeting Th2-related molecules, in particular IL-4, holds promise for EDHM management.
