Does neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) applied during haemodialysis sessions improve functional capacity in people with end-stage renal disease? Does NMES used in this way also improve muscle strength, muscle mass/architecture, psychological outcomes, cardiovascular outcomes and biochemical variables? Does it have any adverse effects? Systematic review of randomised controlled trials with meta-analysis. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and SPORTDiscus were searched from inception to 15 October 2019. Patients receiving haemodialysis for end-stage renal disease. NMES administered during haemodialysis sessions versus control. Functional capacity, muscle strength, muscle mass, psychological outcomes, cardiovascular outcomes, biochemical variables and adverse events. Data were meta-analysed where possible and results were expressed as the pooled mean difference between groups with a 95% confidence interval. Eight studies (221 patients) were included in the analysis. Overall, the methodological quality of the studies was fair to good. NMES improved functional capacity as assessed by the 6-minute walk distance test (MD 31 m, 95% CI 13 to 49) and peak workload attained in incremental exercise (MD 12.5 W, 95% CI 3.2 to 21.9). NMES increased knee extensor muscle strength (MD 3.5 kg, 95% CI 2.3 to 4.7) and handgrip strength (MD 2.4 kg, 95% CI 0.4 to 4.4). Muscle mass/architecture was not substantially affected. NMES was estimated to be beneficial for several domains of quality of life in several studies, although most of these estimates were imprecise. No benefits were found for cardiovascular outcomes. The available data did not establish any clear effects on cardiovascular outcomes or biochemical variables (dialysis efficiency, urea and creatinine). No major NMES-related adverse events were observed. NMES is safe, practical and effective for improving functional capacity and muscle strength in haemodialysis patients. Background: Data are lacking on the characteristics of atrial activity in centenarians, including interatrial block (IAB).Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of IAB and auricular arrhythmias in subjects older than 100 years and to elucidate their clinical implications.Methods: We studied 80 centenarians (mean age 101.4 ± 1.5 years; 21 men) with follow-ups of 6-34 months. Of these 80 centenarians, 71 subjects (88.8%) underwent echocardiography. The control group comprised 269 septuagenarians.Results: A total of 23 subjects (28.8%) had normal P wave, 16 (20%) had partial IAB, 21 (26%) had advanced IAB, and 20 (25.0%) had atrial fibrillation/flutter. The IAB groups exhibited premature atrial beats more frequently than did the normal P wave group (35.1% vs 17.4%; P < .001); also, other measurements in the IAB groups frequently fell between values observed in the normal P wave and the atrial fibrillation/flutter groups. These measurements included sex preponderance, mental status and dementia, perceived health status, significant mitral regurgitation, and mortality. The IAB group had a higher previous stroke rate (24.3%) than did other groups. Compared with septuagenarians, centenarians less frequently presented a normal P wave (28.8% vs 53.5%) and more frequently presented advanced IAB (26.3% vs 8.2%), atrial fibrillation/flutter (25.0% vs 10.0%), and premature atrial beats (28.3 vs 7.0%) (P < .01).Conclusion: Relatively few centenarians (<30%) had a normal P wave, and nearly half had IAB. Our data suggested that IAB, particularly advanced IAB, is a pre-atrial fibrillation condition associated with premature atrial beats. Granitic rock presenting varying alteration processes were sampled from three of five tombs unearthed in Ávila (Spain). The origin of these processes could be both biogenetic and climatic. The purpose of this study is to examine the alteration processes in granitic rocks from the tombs in the area around the Church of San Andrés (Ávila) and to compare these archaeological materials with similar raw materials that could have been employed in their construction. Samples of granitic rock used in the constructive elements of tombs were collected from the same location to compare their physicochemical properties with granite from local quarries. The physical properties of the samples were studied by Polarisation Microscopy and their porosity was determined by BET methodology. Their major and minor constituents were analysed by ICP-MS and their most relevant crystalline mineral compounds (quartz, opal, plagioclase, potassic feldspars, phyllosilicates and hematite) were quantified using X-Ray Diffraction Spectrometry. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) has emerged as a new regulatory molecule in the brain. Recently, some studies have shown a role for this molecule and its LPA1 receptor in the regulation of plasticity and neurogenesis in the adult brain. However, no systematic studies have been conducted to investigate whether the LPA1 receptor is involved in behavior. In this study, we studied the phenotype of maLPA1-null mice, which bear a targeted deletion at the lpa1 locus, in a battery of tests examining neurologic performance, habituation in exploratory behavior in response to low and mild anxiety environments and spatial memory. MaLPA1-null mutants showed deficits in both olfaction and somesthesis, but not in retinal or auditory functions. Sensorimotor co-ordination was impaired only in the equilibrium and grasping reflexes. The mice also showed impairments in neuromuscular strength and analgesic response. No additional differences were observed in the rest of the tests used to study sensoriomotor orientation, limb reflexes and co-ordinated limb use. At behavioral level, maLPA1-null mice showed an impaired exploration in the open field and increased anxiety-like response when exposed to the elevated plus maze. Furthermore, the mice exhibit impaired spatial memory retention and reduced use of spatial strategies in the Morris water maze. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of high-frequency neuromuscular electrical stimulation training (NMES) on the structure, function and oxidative capacity of the skeletal muscle using a mice model (C57BL/6J strain, n=8). The left tibialis anterior muscle in mice was electro-stimulated (ST) whereas the right muscle was maintained as an internal control (CT). The ST limb was submitted to eight surface (100 Hz) NMES sessions in two weeks, with a minimum gap of 24 h between sessions. NMES training increased muscle mass (42.0±3.3 vs. 36.1±5.4 mg, p
