53. Measurement of molecular mixing at a conjugated polymer interface by specular and off-specular neutron scattering

Abstract

Measurements have been performed on thermally equilibrated conjugated-polymer/insulating-polymer bilayers, using specular and off-specular neutron reflectivity. While specular reflectivity is only sensitive to the structure normal to the sample, off-specular measurements can probe the structure of the buried polymer/polymer interface in the plane of the sample. Systematic analysis of the scattering from a set of samples with varying insulating-polymer-thickness, using the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA), has allowed a robust determination of the intrinsic width at the buried polymer/polymer interface. The quantification of this width (12 Å ± 4 Å) allows us to examine aspects of the conjugated polymer conformation at the interface, by appealing to self-consistent field theory (SCFT) predictions for equilibrium polymer/polymer interfaces in the cases of flexible and semi-flexible chains. This analysis enables us to infer that mixing at this particular interface cannot be described in terms of polymer chain segments that adopt conformations similar to a random walk. Instead, a more plausible explanation is that the conjugated polymer chain segments become significantly oriented in the plane of the interface. It is important to point out that we are only able to reach this conclusion following the extensive analysis of reflectivity data, followed by comparison with SCFT predictions. It is not simply the case that conjugated polymers would be expected to adopt this kind of oriented conformation at the interface, because of their relatively high chain stiffness. It is the combination of a high stiffness and a relatively narrow intrinsic interfacial width that results in a deviation from flexible chain behaviour.

54. Switching the Interpenetration of Confined Asymmetric Polymer Brushes

Abstract

The interpenetration of two polymer brushes on approaching flat surfaces has been investigated. When compacting polymer brushes with an asymmetric charge on each surface, one neutral and the other weakly charged, we find that the brush interpenetration becomes a parameter that can be controlled by the pH of the hydrating solution. The switching between high and low degrees of brush interpenetration was investigated with numerical self-consistent field theory (nSCF) and experimentally using a sample environment which combines neutron reflectometry with a surface force type apparatus. Initially, a pair of uncharged poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, brushes are examined, where one of the brushes is deuterated to distinguish it from a hydrogenous counterpart. We find in both nSCF and these experiments that there is no significant overlap between the brushes as both compact into polymer blocks with little hydration. However, when a weak polyelectrolyte poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate), PDMAEMA, brush is confined against a deuterated neutral PEO brush and the pH of the hydrating solution is below the polycation's pKa of 7.5, then the presence of charged groups on the PDMAEMA allows significant interpenetration to occur between the two polymer brushes on contact. This interpenetration remains once the polymer brushes dehydrate due to the confining pressure that is applied. Raising the pH to a value above the pKa, removes the charges from the polyelectrolyte brush resulting in little to no interpenetration between the two brushes. Therefore, by simply adjusting the pH of the hydrating solution the interpenetration state between polymer brush pairs can be switched when one brush is a weak polyelectrolyte. Since polymer brushes are widely investigated and used to reduce friction between solid surfaces, this effect may have significant implications in the design and operation of polymer brushes with controllable friction properties.

Abstract

We report results on the effect of the AlOx barrier layer on the magnetic moment of Fe using polarized neutron reflection. The sample has nominal composition 25 nm Au/5 nm Fe/ 1.3 nm AlOx /GaAs(001). The metal deposition was done in ultrahigh vacuum and the Al oxidation was performed in two steps. From the fit to the neutron data we obtain for the magnetic moment of Fe the value (2.164±0.026)μB, very close to the bulk value (2.185μB at room temperature). Abstract

Electron scattering mechanisms within metallic multilayers are affected by both structural and magnetic disorders. Off-specular x-ray scattering has long been used to probe the structural interfaces, and it is only recently that it has been applied to the study of magnetic disorder. We compare the resonant magnetic x-ray scattering with off-specular neutron studies from magnetron-sputtered Co/Cu and Co/Ru multilayers grown at the second antiferromagnetic coupling peak. Both techniques yield similar results for the Cu system, and a simple domain model can be applied to extract the magnetic interface morphological parameters. For the Cu system, the in-plane correlation length is field dependent and is 880 ± 20 Å after saturation along the hard axis, but increases to 7000 ± 100 Å after saturation along the orthogonal easy axis. Both systems show strong out-of-plane correlations in both the structural and magnetic disorders. In all cases, the out-of-plane correlation length for the structural interfaces is 200-250 Å, but the ratio of the magnetic to structural correlations length is dependent on the magnitude of the exchange coupling and ranges from 0.4 to 1.4. Abstract

The long-range magnetic structure in Co/Pt multilayers magnetically patterned by ion irradiation is observed by off-specular polarized neutron reflectivity. While both specular and off-specular measurements indicate the formation of an artificial domain structure when the sample is in its remanent state, resonant peaks seen in the diffuse scatter reveal long-range magnetic ordering with periodicity in agreement with the design value. These peaks are completely suppressed when the sample is saturated in plane, confirming their origin in the magnetic patterning of the multilayer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on a Microstrip Gas Chamber the aim of the project was to produce a high counting rate detector capable of replacing the existing rate limited scintillator detectors currently in use on the CRISP reflectometer for off specular reflectometry experiments. The detector system is described together with results of neutron beam tests carried out at the ISIS spallation neutron source.

Abstract

We report experimental results on the structural, magnetic, electronic, and spin transport properties of a 21 nm Fe 3Si/GaAs(001) heterostructure epitaxially grown by coevaporation. High-resolution x-ray diffraction shows an almost stoichiometric film, which is lattice matched in-plane to the GaAs substrate and therefore slightly tetragonal distorted. Polarized neutron reflectometry measurements yield a magnetic moment of (1.107±0.014) µ B per atom at room temperature (RT), while superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry yields a magnetic moment of (0.9±0.1)µ B per atom at RT, both close to the bulk value. Magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements show that this system has in-plane cubic anisotropy with easy axes along the directions and a cubic anisotropy constant K 1=(3.1±0.6)×10 4 erg/cm 3 at RT. A resistivity of (4.1±0.4)×10 -7 O m in the Fe 3Si film was measured, which is close to the bulk value. Optical spin orientation in the GaAs was used for spin transport measurements and spin detection is demonstrated at RT for this system. Point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy was used to determine the spin polarization of the transport current, yielding P=(45±5)%. ©2005 The American Physical Society. 71 9 Cited By :85

Abstract

We have used neutron reflection from the liquid surface at ultra-low temperatures to study the surface properties of liquid helium. We measured neutron scattering from the free surfaces of commercially pure 4He (0.3 ppm of 3He impurities) and of a 3He-4He mixture with a 3He concentration of 0.5% for temperatures in the range from 340mK to 2.2K We compare the reflected neutron intensity for different temperatures and we fit a model that describes the collected data. The data are described well by a diffusive 3He layer of a few hundred Angstrom thickness on the bulk 4He liquid surface. Even at high temperatures (∼2K) there is an increased concentration of 3He atoms near the liquid surface. The distribution does not change very much with temperature. At low temperatures the neutron absorption increases significantly, which might be an indication of the formation of Andreev states. However, the shapes of the curves do not change very much which seems to suggest that the layer formed by the 3He atoms in Andreev states is very thin ∼ 10Å. The experimental method, based on neutron reflectometry, opens up new opportunities for the study of the surfaces and interfaces of quantum fluids and solids.

Abstract

Neutron spin-echo resolved grazing incidence scattering (SERGIS) measurements performed on a silicon diffraction grating with a rectangular profile were shown in our previous publications to be well explained by dynamical theory calculations. The theory is based on a Bloch wave expansion of the neutron wavefunction in the periodic layer of the grating, which includes all multiple scattering within that layer. Calculations show that the spin-echo polarization should be very sensitive to the scattering geometry (i.e., incident angle, sample alignment and beam divergence) and the sample specifications (i.e., grating period, groove depth). To test these predictions, SERGIS measurements have been performed on a set of gratings with different specifications in various scattering geometries. Abstract

We report and discuss the first neutron reflection measurements from the free surfaces of normal and superfluid 4He and of a liquid 3He-4He mixture. In case of liquid 4He the surface roughness is different above and below the lambda transition, being smoother in the superfluid state. For the superfluid, we also observe the formation of a surface layer ~ 200 Å thick which has a subtly different neutron scattering cross-section. The results can be interpreted as an enhancement of the Bose-Einstein condensate fraction close to the helium surface. We find that the addition of 3He isotopic impurities leads to the formation of Andreev levels at low temperatures.

Abstract

The reflection of neutrons from a helium surface has been observed for the first time. The 4He surface is smoother in the superfluid state at 1.54 K than in the case of the normal liquid at 2.3 K. In the superfluid state we also observe a surface layer ~200 Å thick which has a subtly different neutron scattering cross-section, which may be explained by an enhanced Bose-Einstein condensate fraction close to the helium surface. The application of neutron reflectometry described in this paper creates new and exciting opportunities for the surface and interfacial study of quantum fluids.
