Abstract

The up-to-now only binary neutron star merger gravitational wave event with detected electromagnetic counterparts, GRB170817A, occurred in a rarefied medium with a density smaller than $10^{-3}-10^{-2}~{\rm cm}^{-3}$. As neutron star binaries are imparted kicks upon formation, and due to their long delay-times before merger, such low-density circum-merger media are generally expected. However, there is some indirect evidence for a class of faster-merging binaries, which would coalesce in denser environments. Nonetheless, astronomical data is largely inconclusive on the possibility of these high-density mergers. We describe a method to directly probe this hypothetical population of high-density mergers through multi-messenger observations of binary neutron star merger afterglows, exploiting the sharp sensitivity of these to the circum-merger medium density. This method is based on a yet-to-be-collected sample of merger afterglows. Its constraining power is large even with a small sample of events. We discuss the method's limitations and applicability. In the upcoming era of 3$^{\rm rd}$-generation gravitational wave detectors, this method's potential will be fully realized as it will allow to probe mergers having occurred soon after the peak of cosmic star formation.

Abstract

Recent optical/IR/UV observations and Gamma-ray burst rate determinations have led to significant progress in constraining the star formation rate (SFR) at high redshift. The SFR is a fundamental quantity since it is used to predict, among others, the ionization history of the Universe, the evolution of the cosmic chemical abundances and the supernova rates as a function of the redshift. Such predictions are made here using a hierarchical model for structure formation. In this context, we focus our attention on the origin and evolution of a typical r process element, Europium, in two possible scenarios for the main astrophysical production site, namely core collapse supernovae (CCSN) and neutron star mergers (NSM).We find that this model favours NSM as the main r process site, specifically at low metallicity, and in addition, constrains the NSM time delay to ∼ 0.1-0.2 Gyr. On the other hand, the evolution of Eu abundances puts also a constraint on the merger rate, which allows an independent prediction of the expected merger rate in the horizon of the gravitational wave detectors advanced Virgo/ad LIGO, as well as a prediction for the expected rate of electromagnetic counterparts to mergers in large NIR surveys. Finally, while this model favors NSM as the main r-process site, more observations at very low metallicity and improved predictions from the nucleosynthetic evolution of massive stars are needed to confirm this result., SCOPUS: cp.p, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

The cosmic evolution of the neutron-star merger (NSM) rate can be deduced from the observed cosmic star formation rate. This allows us to estimate the rate expected in the horizon of the gravitational wave detectors advanced Virgo and advanced LIGO and to compare those rates with independent predictions. In this context, the rapid neutron-capture process, or r-process, can be used as a constraint assuming NSM is the main astrophysical site for this nucleosynthetic process.We compute the early cosmic evolution of a typical r-process element, europium. Eu yields from NSM are taken from recent nucleosynthesis calculations. The same approach allows us to compute the cosmic rate of Core-Collapse SuperNovae (CCSNe) and the associated evolution of Eu. We find that the bulk of Eu observations at [Fe/H] > -2.5 can be rather well fitted by either CCSN or NSM scenarios. However, at lower metallicity, the early Eu cosmic evolution favours NSM as the main astrophysical site for the r-process. A comparison between our calculations and spectroscopic observations at very low metallicities allows us to constrain the coalescence time-scale in the NSM scenario to ∼0.1-0.2 Gyr. These values are in agreement with the coalescence time-scales of some observed binary pulsars. Finally, the cosmic evolution of Eu is used to put constraints on (i) the NSM rate, (ii) the merger rate in the horizon of the gravitational wave detectors advanced Virgo/ad LIGO, as well as (iii) the expected rate of electromagnetic counterparts to mergers ('kilonovae') in large near-infrared surveys. Abstract

The intrinsic luminosity distribution of GRBs is currently poorly constrained by observations. In the framework of the internal shock model, it depends on the distribution of the kinetic energy injection rate in the relativistic outflow emerging from the central source and on the efficiency of internal shocks. Abstract

We study the redshift distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with Montecarlo simulations, assuming a comoving rate proportional to the star formation rate. We then use the energy band and flux threshold of several instruments (BATSE, HETE2 and SWIFT) to compute the observed distributions. Model parameters are constrained by fitting simultaneously (i) the log(N)-log(P) diagram of BATSE bursts; (ii) the Epeak distribution of bright BATSE bursts; (iii) the proportion of X-ray rich GRBs and X-ray flashes observed by HETE-2. This allows us to predict the redshift distribution of GRBs detected by SWIFT.
