Abstract

Un ringraziamento va ad ASI per il supporto per il progetto., In this document, we reported the history of the tests performed on the STC detector in the first two years of the BepiColombo’s cruise phase. The scope of these tests was to monitor the dark current behavior of the STC channel’s detector. A detailed description is provided for each test phase: data acquired, the deducted results and conclusions. The STC Channel is part of SIMBIO-SYS, a scientific payload of the BepiColombo ESA-JAXA mission to Mercury. During the NECP (Near-Earth Commissioning Phase ), all the initial commissioning activities were completed and the three channels of SIMBIO-SYS have operated properly demonstrating that all the channels and subsystems worked nominally. Since then, every six months different instrument checkouts have been carried-out to check the performance of the three SIMBIO-SYS channels and improve their calibration. This document reports the conclusion on the Dark calibration of STC Channel due to the analysis of the ICOs tests.

Abstract

This Letter addresses the first Solar Orbiter (SO) -- Parker Solar Probe (PSP) quadrature, occurring on January 18, 2021, to investigate the evolution of solar wind from the extended corona to the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, the same plasma volume observed remotely in corona at altitudes between 3.5 and 6.3 solar radii above the solar limb with the Metis coronagraph on SO can be tracked to PSP, orbiting at 0.1 au, thus allowing the local properties of the solar wind to be linked to the coronal source region from where it originated. Thanks to the close approach of PSP to the Sun and the simultaneous Metis observation of the solar corona, the flow-aligned magnetic field and the bulk kinetic energy flux density can be empirically inferred along the coronal current sheet with an unprecedented accuracy, allowing in particular estimation of the Alfv\'en radius at 8.7 solar radii during the time of this event. This is thus the very first study of the same solar wind plasma as it expands from the sub-Alfv\'enic solar corona to just above the Alfv\'en surface., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present the catadioptric optical design solution for the stereo channel of the imaging system SIMBIOSYS for the BepiColombo European Space Agency mission to Mercury. The main scientific objectives of the instrument are the three-dimensional global mapping of the entire surface of Mercury in the panchromatic band and imaging of selected areas in four broad colored bands; both tasks have to be accomplished with a scale factor of 50 m per pixel at periherm. The system consists of an original compact layout in which the two stereo subchannels share a common detector; also, the optical components are common to the two subchannels, with the exception of the first element, which is a rhomboid prism. The field of view of each subchannel is about 5[degrees] x 5[degrees] with a scale factor of 23 arcsec/pixel. The ray- tracing simulation of the system shows that the design guarantees optimal aberration balancing over the entire field of view and the entire wavelength range covered by the instrument, with ensquared energy of the order of 80% in one pixel. Abstract

Adaptive optics (AO) has been recently used for the development of ophthalmic devices. Its main objective has been to obtain high-resolution images for diagnostic purposes or to estimate high-order eye aberrations. The core of every AO system is an optical device that is able to modify the wavefront shape of the light entering the system; if you know the shape of the incoming wavefront, it is possible to correct the aberrations introduced in the optical path from the source to the image. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility, although in a simulated system, of estimating and correcting an aberrated wavefront shape by means of an iterative gradient-descent-like software procedure, acting on a point source image, without expensive wavefront sensors or the burdensome computation of the point-spread-function (PSF) of the optical system. In such a way, it is possible to obtain a speed and repeatability advantage over classical stochastic algorithms. A hierarchy in the aberrations is introduced, in order to reduce the dimensionality of the state space to be searched. The proposed algorithm is tested on a simple optical system that has been simulated with ray-tracing software, with randomly generated aberrations, and compared with a recently proposed algorithm for wavefront sensorless adaptive optics. Abstract

The description of an adaptive optics (AO) system with no wavefront sensor to correct primary aberrations is presented. This system is based on closed loop software that iteratively analyzes a point source target image on the instrument focal plane and suitably modifies the AO device. The performed tests with a pull-only deformable mirror (DM) have shown that the system works very well, reaching an optimal focusing condition in a few seconds using standard components. Such a system can be conveniently applied in all the fields in which a not very fast optical adaptation is acceptable. OCIS codes: 010.1080, 220.1000, 230.4040.

Abstract

The design of a quasi-null lens system for the fabrication of an aspheric oblate convex ellipsoidal mirror is presented. The Performance and tolerance of the system have been analyzed. The system has been applied successfully for the fabrication of the primary mirror of the Wide Angle Camera (WAC), the imaging system onboard the Rosetta, the European Space Agency cornerstone mission dedicated to the exploration of a comet. Abstract

A spectroheliograph dedicated to the observation of the solar disk in the extreme-ultraviolet OV spectral line at 62.97 nm is described. As demonstrated in the Skylab SO-82A spectroheliograph [Appl. Opt. 16, 870 (1977)], this line is uniquely suited to characterize solar plasma in the important 250, 000 K temperature regime. No multilayer coating or suitable filter is yet available to select this wavelength, so an optical design based on a double spectrograph with a spatial filter to remove the unwanted radiation has been developed. Analysis of the optical design shows that this instrument can obtain a 1 arc-sec spatial resolution (two pixels) with a relatively high image-acquisition cadence. A preliminary tolerance analysis has been performed. A simple method of instrument alignment in visible light is also described. Abstract

The final optical design of the Wide Angle Camera for the Rosetta mission to the P/Wirtanen comet is described. This camera is an F/5.6 telescope with a rather large 12 [degrees] x 12 [degrees] field of view. To satisfy the scientific requirements for spatial resolution, contrast capability, and spectral coverage, a two-mirror, off-axis, and unobstructed optical design, believed to be novel, has been adopted. This configuration has been simulated with a ray-tracing code, showing that theoretically more than 80% of the collimated beam energy falls within a single pixel (20' x 20') over the whole camera field of view and that the possible contrast ratio is smaller than 1/1000. Moreover, this novel optical design is rather simple from a mechanical point of view and is compact and relatively easy to align. All these characteristics make this type of camera rather flexible and also suitable for other space missions with similar performance requirements. Building on these constraints and possibilities, an observation strategy based on a “segmented orbit” concept is presented and illustrated with some practical examples.

Abstract

EnVisS (Entire Visible Sky) is an all-sky camera specifically designed to fly on the space mission Comet Interceptor. This mission has been selected in June 2019 as the first European Space Agency (ESA) Fast mission, a modest size mission with fast implementation. Comet Interceptor aims to study a dynamically new comet, or interstellar object, and its launch is scheduled in 2029 as a companion to the ARIEL mission. The mission study phase, called Phase 0, has been completed in December 2019, and then the Phase A study had started. Phase A will last for about two years until mission adoption expected in June 2022. The Comet Interceptor mission is conceived to be composed of three spacecraft: spacecraft A devoted to remote sensing science, and the other two, spacecraft B1 and B2, dedicated to a fly-by with the comet. EnVisS will be mounted on spacecraft B2, which is foreseen to be spin-stabilized. The camera is developed with the scientific task to image, in push-frame mode, the full comet coma in different colors. A set of ad-hoc selected broadband filters and polarizers in the visible range will be used to study the full scale distribution of the coma gas and dust species. The camera configuration is a fish-eye lens system with a FoV of about 180°x45°. Abstract

Entire Visible Sky (EnVisS) is one of the payload proposed for the ESA selected F-Class mission Comet Interceptor. The main aim of the mission is the study of a dynamically new comet, or an interstellar object, entering the inner solar system. The EnVisS camera is designed to capture the entire sky in some visible wavelength bands while the spacecraft passes through the comet's tail environment. EnVisS optical head is composed of a fisheye lens with a field of view of 180° x 40° coupled with an imaging detector equipped with both band-pass and polarimetric filters. Very wide angle lens, as a fisheye, must be necessarily anamorphic, i. e. its focal length must change along the field of view, in order to fit a finite-size imaging detector. This anamorphic distortion is introduced by the optical designer, depending on the desired applications. Each possible distortion bring along different field of view mapping and this must be taken into account by the scientific/metrological user, because the plate scale is variable along the focal plane. To obtain useful scientific information from fisheye images (astrometry, flux calibration and brightness measurements), a precise determination of the mapping function has to be accurately determined. In this paper we describe the expected distortion map of the EnVisS camera. © 2020 SPIE.

Abstract

International audience; The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation ground based observatory for gamma ray astronomy at very high energies. Employing more than 100 Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres, it was designed to reach unprecedented sensitivity and energy resolution. Understanding and correcting for systematic biases on the absolute energy scale and instrument response functions will be a crucial issue for the performance of CTA. The LUPM group and the Spanish/Italian/Slovenian collaboration are currently building two Raman LIDAR prototypes for the online atmospheric calibration along the line of sight of the CTA. Requirements for such a solution include the ability to characterize aerosol extinction at two wavelengths to distances of 30 km with an accuracy better than 5%, within time scales of about a minute, steering capabilities and close interaction with the CTA array control and data acquisition system as well as other auxiliary instruments. Our Raman LIDARs have design features that make them different from those used in atmospheric science and are characterized by large collecting mirrors (2.5 m2), liquid light guides that collect the light at the focal plane and transport it to the readout system, reduced acquisition time and highly precise Raman spectrometers. The Raman LIDARs will participate in a cross calibration and characterization campaign of the atmosphere at the CTA North site at La Palma, together with other site characterization instruments. After a one year test period there, an in depth evaluation of the solutions adopted by the two projects will lead to a final Raman LIDAR design proposal for both CTA sites.

The SIMBIO-SYS simulator is a useful tool to test the instrument performance and to predict the instrument behaviour during the whole scientific mission. It has been developed with Interactive Data Language (IDL), and it give three groups of output data: i) the geometrical quantities related to the spacecraft and the channels, which include both the general information about the spacecraft and the information for each filter; ii) the radiometric outputs, which include the planet reflectance, the radiance and the expected signal measured by the detector; iii) the quantities related to the channel performance, which are for example the integration time (IT), which has to be defined to avoid the detector saturation, the expected dark current of the detector.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation ground-based observatory forgamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. Employing more than 100 Imaging AtmosphericCherenkov Telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres, it was designed to reach un-precedented sensitivity and energy resolution. Understanding and correcting for systematic bi-ases on the absolute energy scale and instrument response functions will be a crucial issue forthe performance of CTA. The LUPM group and the Spanish/Italian/Slovenian collaboration arecurrently building two Raman LIDAR prototypes for the online atmospheric calibration alongthe line-of-sight of the CTA. Requirements for such a solution include the ability to characterizeaerosol extinction at two wavelengths to distances of 30 km with an accuracy better than 5%,within time scales of about a minute, steering capabilities and close interaction with the CTAarray control and data acquisition system as well as other auxiliary instruments. Our Raman LI-DARs have design features that make them different from those used in atmospheric science andare characterized by large collecting mirrors (∼2.5 m2), liquid light-guides that collect the light atthe focal plane and transport it to the readout system, reduced acquisition time and highly preciseRaman spectrometers. The Raman LIDARs will participate in a cross-calibration and character-ization campaign of the atmosphere at the CTA North site at La Palma, together with other sitecharacterization instruments. After a one-year test period there, an in-depth evaluation of the so-lutions adopted by the two projects will lead to a final Raman LIDAR design proposal for bothCTA sites.
