In magnetic resonance imaging, the application of a strong diffusion weighting suppresses the signal contributions from the less diffusion-restricted constituents of the brain's white matter, thus enabling the estimation of the transverse relaxation time T 2 that arises from the more diffusion-restricted constituents such as the axons. However, the presence of cell nuclei and vacuoles can confound the estimation of the axonal T 2 , as diffusion within those structures is also restricted, causing the corresponding signal to survive the strong diffusion weighting. We devise an estimator of the axonal T 2 based on the directional spherical variance of the strongly diffusion-weighted signal. The spherical variance T 2 estimates are insensitive to the presence of isotropic contributions to the signal like those provided by cell nuclei and vacuoles. We show that with a strong diffusion weighting these estimates differ from those obtained using the directional spherical mean of the signal which contains both axonal and isotropically-restricted contributions. Our findings hint at the presence of an MRI-visible isotropically-restricted contribution to the signal in the white matter ex vivo fixed tissue (monkey) at 7T, and do not allow us to discard such a possibility also for in vivo human data collected with a clinical 3T system. The intracellular pathogen Legionella pneumophila, as well as other Legionella species, utilize the Icm/Dot type-IV secretion system to translocate an exceptionally large and diverse repertoire of effectors into their host cells. However, only nine core effectors were found to be present in all analyzed Legionella species. In this study, we investigated the core effectors, and used intracellular growth complementation to determine whether orthologs of core effectors perform the same function in different Legionella species. We found that three out of the nine L. pneumophila core effectors are required for maximal intracellular growth. Examination of orthologous core effectors from four Legionella species spread over the Legionella phylogenetic tree revealed that most of them perform the same function. Nevertheless, some of the orthologs of the core effector LegA3 did not complement the L. pneumophila legA3 deletion mutant for intracellular growth. LegA3 is encoded as part of an operon together with another gene, which we named legA3C, encoding a non-translocated protein. We found that LegA3 and LegA3C physically interact with each other, are both required for maximal intracellular growth, and the LegA3-LegA3C orthologous pairs from all the Legionella species examined fully complement the L. pneumophila legA3 deletion mutant for intracellular growth. Our results indicate that the Legionella core effectors orthologs generally perform the same function and establish that LegA3 requires LegA3C to fulfill its conserved function.

BackgroundAlthough directly observed therapy (DOT) is recommended worldwide for monitoring anti-tuberculosis treatment, transportation and personnel requirements limit its use.ObjectiveTo evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of 'video DOT' (VDOT), which allows patients to record and transmit medication ingestion via videos watched remotely by health care providers to document adherence.MethodsWe conducted a single-arm trial among tuberculosis (TB) patients in San Diego, California, USA, (n = 43) and Tijuana, Mexico (n = 9) to represent high- and low-resource settings. Pre-/post-treatment interviews assessed participant characteristics and experiences. Adherence was defined as the proportion of observed doses to expected doses.ResultsThe mean age was 37 years (range 18-86), 50% were male, and 88% were non-Caucasian. The mean duration of VDOT use was 5.5 months (range 1-11). Adherence was similar in San Diego (93%) and Tijuana (96%). Compared to time on in-person DOT, 92% preferred VDOT, 81% thought VDOT was more confidential, 89% never/rarely had problems recording videos, and 100% would recommend VDOT to others. Seven (13%) participants were returned to in-person DOT and six (12%) additional participants had their phones lost, broken or stolen.ConclusionsVDOT was feasible and acceptable, with high adherence in both high- and low-resource settings. Efficacy and cost-effectiveness studies are needed.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis determinan lama pemberian ASI pada anak usia 24 bulan di Indonesia dengan menggunakan data Survei Demografi dan Kesehatan Indonesia (SDKI-2017). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian cross sectional yang menggunakan data sekunder SDKI-2017 dengan sampel anak usia 24 bulan sebanyak 226 subjek. Variabel bebas dalam penelitian ini adalah karakteristik sosiodemografi dan biomedis, sedangkan variabel terikatnya adalah lama menyusui. Pengolahan dan analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan IBM SPSS versi 25. Analisis data meliputi analisis univariat, bivariat, dan multivariat. Background According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, patients admitted to the hospital are commonly discharged on antibiotic therapy with prolonged courses of therapy, which contributes to excessive antibiotic exposure and adverse events. The purpose of this study was to evaluate total antibiotic duration of therapy at hospital discharge at Indiana University Health Arnett, White Memorial, and Frankfort hospitals. Methods A multicenter, retrospective electronic health record review was conducted from 1 January to 30 June 2019. Patients were included if they were at least 18 years of age, began antibiotic therapy while admitted, and continued antibiotic therapy at hospital discharge for 1 of the following indications: skin/soft tissue infection (SSTI), urinary tract infection (UTI), community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), or acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). The number of days of therapy (DOT) of each inpatient and outpatient antibiotic prescribed was collected to calculate the total DOT, which was utilized to determine the appropriateness of the duration of therapy. Results Of the 547 patients included, 233 patients (42.6%) had CAP, 120 (21.9%) had UTI, 101 (18.5%) had SSTI, and 93 (17%) had AECOPD. The median duration of antibiotic therapy across all indications was 9 days (interquartile range [IQR], 7–11). Median duration for CAP was 9 days (IQR, 7–10), AECOPD was 7 days (IQR, 5–9), UTI was 8 days (IQR, 6–10), and SSTI was 12 days (IQR, 10–14). To quantify antimicrobial use in inpatients setting as part of antimicrobial stewardship program surveillance. Antimicrobial use was obtained using a pre-designed data collection form in this point prevalence study. Setting: The study was conducted in a tertiary academic hospital in the North of Jordan on 13 August 2018. Main outcome measures: antimicrobial use was determined using two methods: defined daily use (DDD) and days of therapy (DOT). This study identified antimicrobial use in 144 patients. Carbapenems, glycopeptides, and piperacillin-tazobactam were the most utilized antimicrobials in the inpatients' setting in both measures DDD and DOT. The highest prescription rate of antibiotics was in the internal medicine wards (49.8 DDD/100 admissions), followed by surgery wards (33.2 DDD/100 admissions) and intensive care unit (20.6 DDD/100 admissions). This surveillance study addressed patterns of antimicrobial usage in inpatients settings in a tertiary care hospital in Jordan. India announced its first National Telecom Policy in 1994 and since then its telecommunications Industry has witnessed tremendous growth. At a teledensity of 89.92% (TRAI 2019), it is the second largest telecom market in the world. The policy maker, Department of Telecommunication (DoT) and the regulator, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have taken several initiatives to ensure affordable services to telecom users. TRAI also drives initiatives to increase the level of awareness about telecom industry among users. To analyse impact of these initiatives by TRAI and DoT, this study presents an objective assessment of user's awareness and their assessment of affordability of telecom services. A structured questionnaire is used to collect data by surveying a sample of 408 telecom users. It was found that half of the respondents were aware of DoT; more than half were aware of the regulator TRAI and Indian governments vision for telecommunications and 85% of survey respondents found telecom services affordable. The level of affordability varied across gender, age group and education levels. Through regression analysis, the study found that awareness about telecom industry influences users' assessment of service affordability. Hence, TRAI and DoT should take actions to increase the level of awareness, which will improve users' perception of affordability and may lead to increased adoption of telecom services. In addition, it is suggested that affordability of female users can be addressed through customized tariff plan and schemes.

Abstract Background Mobile health (mHealth) interventions have the potential to improve health through patient education and provider engagement while increasing efficiency and lowering costs. This raises the question of whether disparities in access to mobile technology could accentuate disparities in mHealth mediated care. This study addresses whether programs planning to implement mHealth interventions risk creating or perpetuating health disparities based on inequalities in smartphone ownership. Methods Video Directly Observed Therapy (VDOT) is an mHealth intervention for monitoring tuberculosis (TB) treatment adherence through videos sent by patients to their healthcare provider using smartphones. We conducted secondary analyses of data from a single-arm trial of VDOT for TB treatment monitoring by San Diego, San Francisco, and New York City health departments. Baseline and follow-up treatment interviews were used to assess participant smartphone ownership, sociodemographics and TB treatment perceptions. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify correlates of smartphone ownership. Results Of the 151 participants enrolled, mean age was 41 years (range: 18–87 years) and 41.1% were female. Participants mostly identified as Asian (45.0%) or Hispanic/Latino (29.8%); 57.8% had at most a high school education. At baseline, 30.4% did not own a smartphone, which was similar across sites. Older participants (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.09 per year, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05–1.12), males (AOR = 2.86, 95% CI: 1.04–7.86), participants having at most a high school education (AOR = 4.48, 95% CI: 1.57–12.80), and those with an annual income below $10,000 (AOR = 3.06, 95% CI: 1.19, 7.89) had higher odds of not owning a smartphone. Conclusions Approximately one-third of TB patients in three large United States of America (USA) cities lacked smartphones prior to the study. Patients who were older, male, less educated, or had lower annual income were less likely to own smartphones and could be denied access to mHealth interventions if personal smartphone ownership is required.

Background Drug resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) infringes substantial burden in terms of longer treatment duration, morbidity and mortality. Timely identification of patients at risks of DR-TB will aid individualized treatment. Current study was aimed to ascertain several factors associated with DR-TB among patients attending a tertiary care hospital. Methods This retrospective study was conducted among patients with confirmed diagnosis of DR-TB and drug susceptible TB (DS-TB) seeking medical care from a tertiary care hospital during 2014–2019. The types of DR-TB included were rifampicin resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB), Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). Appropriate statistical methods were implied to evaluate the factors associated with DR-TB. Results Out of 580 patients, DS-TB was diagnosed in 198 (34.1%) patients while DR-TB was present in 382 patients. Of resistance cases, RR-TB, MDR-TB and XDR-TB were diagnosed in 176 (30.3%), 195 (33.6%) and 11 (1.9%) patients, respectively. Significant differences (P < 0.05) in demographics and clinico-laboratory characteristics were observed between patients with DS-TB and DR-TB. Logistic regression analysis revealed age ≤38 years (OR: 2.5), single marital status (OR: 11.1), tobacco use (OR: 2.9), previous treatment (OR: 19.2), treatment failure (OR: 9.2) and cavity on chest X-ray (OR: 30.1) as independent risk factors for MDR-TB. However, XDR-TB was independently associated with age group of ≤38 years (OR: 13.6), students (OR: 13.0), previous treatment (OR: 12.5), cavity on chest X-ray (OR: 59.6). The independent risk factors associated with RR-TB are age ≤38 years (OR: 2.8), females (OR: 5.7), unemployed (OR: 41.5), treatment failure (OR: 4.9), previous treatment (OR: 38.2) and cavity on chest X-ray (OR: 4.3). ROC curve analysis accentuate the excellent predictive accuracy of all logistic regression models as shown by AUC (0.968, P < 0.001) for MDR-TB, AUC (0.941, P < 0.001) for XDR-TB and AUC (0.962, P < 0.001) for RR-TB. Conclusions Current study demonstrates a sizeable extent of resistant cases among pulmonary TB patients. This study presaged significant risk of DR-TB among females, young adults, unemployed, smokers, patients with previous treatment failure and cavitation on chest X-ray. Timely identification of high risk patients will give pronounced advantages regarding appropriate choices of prevention, treatment and disease control.

Red dot basal cell carcinoma is a distinctive clinical subtype of basal cell carcinoma. It has been reported in eight individuals with a male to female ratio of 1:1; and the patients' ages ranged from 50 to 74 years. All patients had prior history of actinic keratoses and basal cell carcinoma. In addition, some patients also had prior squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and/or dysplastic nevus. The tumor was usually of recent onset, asymptomatic, and on sun-exposed skin. It was most commonly located on the nose (five patients); other sites were the upper lip, the mid back, or thigh—each in one patient. The red dot basal cell carcinoma was solitary and small—usually 4 mm or less in diameter. It typically presented as a red macule or papule; however, it sometimes appeared as a flesh-colored or pink to light-red papule with a bright-red central area. Microscopic features showed basaloid tumor cells (arranged as either nodular aggregates or superficial buds or both). In the central portion of the lesion, there was a proliferation of erythrocyte-containing vascular spaces between the epidermis and the neoplasm. The basal cell carcinoma pathology subtype was either nodular and superficial (three patients), nodular (two patients), or superficial (one patient). The clinical differential diagnosis of red dot basal cell carcinoma included not only benign vascular lesions (such as hemangioma and telangiectasia) but also inflammatory conditions and adnexal tumors. Other basaloid cell neoplasms were in the pathologic differential diagnosis. The pathogenesis of red dot basal cell carcinoma is similar to that of other basal cell carcinoma clinical subtypes. Mohs surgery is the treatment of choice for red dot basal cell carcinomas. Red dot basal cell carcinoma has two categories of biologic behavior based on the ratio of the postoperative wound size as compared with the size of the preoperative tumor: nonaggressive (for which the ratio was 5:1 or less for three patients) and aggressive (for which the ratio was greater than 12:1 for three patients). There was no recurrence of the red dot basal cell carcinoma after treatment. In conclusion, the incidence of red dot basal cell carcinoma—a unique morphologic variant of basal cell carcinoma—may be higher than suggested by the number of reported patients with this basal cell carcinoma subtype. Wyoming has one of the highest truck cash rates in the United States. Three safety agencies in the state, theWyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), and the Wyoming Trucking Association (WTA), coordinated to identify three zones throughout Wyoming with high truck traffic with the objective of improving road safety in the state. The literature review indicated that the previous violations can be used to predict future offenses and crashes. Therefore, violation data, in addition to crash data, were used to identify the performance of WHP in identification of the groups at higher risks of future offenses and crashes. Descriptive and statistical analyses were performed across different temporal, environmental, driver, and roadway characteristics to identify the areas where the three organizations should allocate or shift their resources. The results of the descriptive analyses showed that adverse weather condition variables are some of the areas where the agencies should emphasize their resources. The results of statistical modeling indicated that weather and road conditions, gender, and age are some of the factors that contribute to truck-related crashes. Although much research has been conducted by using crash data to identify the underlying contributory factors to truck crashes, little has been done in identifying preventive measures that could be taken by the safety agencies based upon crash and violation data. Featured Application: Diffuse optical tomography of the thyroid provides great promise for more accurate diagnosis of thyroid cancers. Thyroid cancer is usually diagnosed by ultrasound imaging and fine-needle aspiration biopsy. However, diagnosis of follicular thyroid carcinomas (FTC) is difficult because FTC lacks nuclear atypia and a consensus on histological interpretation. Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) offers the potential to diagnose FTC because it can measure tumor hypoxia, while image reconstruction of the thyroid is still challenging mainly due to the complex anatomical features of the neck. In this study, we attempted to solve this issue by creating a finite element model of the human neck excluding the trachea (a void region). This study evaluated boron diffusion from rods made of raw boron minerals, ulexite and colemanite with low water solubility, in comparison with di-sodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT). Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) sapwood and heartwood blocks were conditioned to target moisture contents of 30%, 60%, and 90%. The rods were inserted into the blocks through treatment holes and boron diffusion was observed at three assay zones across the blocks after 7, 30, 60 and 90-day-incubation at room temperature. Ethylene glycol was also inserted into the holes to improve boron diffusion. Boron levels increased with increased wood moisture content. With some exceptions, boron in the assay zones did not tend to follow consistent amount gradients with distance from the treatment hole. Boron levels from ulexite rods were higher than those from colemanite rods, with DOT rods with the highest diffusion rates as a result of higher water solubility of DOT than ulexite and colemanite. The results suggest that ulexite-based rods may be useful in the presence of ethylene glycol in sapwood when wood is at high moisture content for extended periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated boron diffusion from raw boron minerals ulexite and colemanite with low water solubility in comparison to disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT). Tests were conducted using sugi (Cryptomeria japonica (L.) f. D. Don) sapwood and heartwood blocks conditioned to 30, 60, and 90% target moisture content. The blocks were filled with the boron compounds through treatment holes and diffusion was observed at three assay zones across the blocks after 7, 30, 60 or 90-day incubation period at room temperatures. For comparison, ethylene glycol was also introduced into the holes to elevate boron diffusion. As expected, diffusion increased with increased moisture content and levels were higher at the 60% and 90% moisture levels compared to the 30% level. With some exceptions, boron levels did not follow consistent gradients with distance away from the treatment hole. Incorporation of ethylene glycol helped increase boron levels, even in heartwood blocks. Boron levels were higher from the ulexite source than from colemanite; however, DOT treatments resulted in the highest boron diffusion rates as a result of greater water solubility compared to both raw boron minerals. The results suggest that ulexite together with ethylene glycol may be useful in both sapwood and heartwood materials when kept at high moisture levels for extended periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To examine the structure of photoreceptors surrounding two subtypes of subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDD), namely, dot and ribbon SDD, using multimodal imaging including adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Methods: Twenty-six eyes of 13 patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and SDD and 16 eyes of 8 subjects in normal chorioretinal health were studied. SDD presence, stage, and subtype were determined using color fundus photographs, infrared reflectance, autofluorescence imaging, and SD-OCT. SDD and surrounding photoreceptors were imaged using AOSLO. The structure of cone photoreceptors and SDD was examined at the baseline and at 2-year follow-up studies in 6 patients. Results: Dot SDD were identified in 18 eyes of 9 patients and coexisting dot and ribbon SDD were observed in 8 eyes of 4 patients. While a characteristic photoreceptor mosaic was clearly revealed by AOSLO in the area unaffected by lesions in those eyes with dot-only SDD, in unaffected areas adjacent to retinal regions with predominantly ribbon SDD, photoreceptors could no longer be visualized. Conclusion: The invisibility of the photoreceptor mosaic in unaffected areas adjacent to retinal regions with predominantly ribbon SDD suggests degeneration in the outer segment and the interdigitation zone, which impairs the waveguiding ability of the photoreceptors. Sodium fluoride (NaF) and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) are well-known fungicides for preventing and remediating decay in wood and wood structures, due to their excellent diffusion properties in wood. The efficacy of both compounds against drywood termites is, however, inadequately studied; there is a lack of information on the development of proper protection and control methods against drywood termites using these diffusible chemicals. In this study, the threshold values of fluoride and boron against drywood and subterranean termites and decay and mold fungi were assessed in laboratory conditions. Treated Cryptomeria japonica D. Don (sugi) sapwood specimens with four different concentrations of NaF and DOT applied by either dipping or vacuum processes were subjected to attack by drywood termites, Incisitermes minor (Hagen) for 6 weeks. Treated specimens were also tested against subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki for 3 weeks. Laboratory decay and mold resistance tests were then performed to determine the efficacy of the compounds against fungal attack. Results showed 80% or greater drywood termite mortality in wood specimens treated with NaF at a retention level of 1.7 kg m−3 or more. In DOT treated groups, higher retention levels (greater than 6.8 kg m−3) were needed to reach up to 80% or more termite mortality. In general, weight losses in NaF-treated specimens were slightly lower than those in DOT-treated ones. Retention levels of around 1.2 kg m−3 for NaF and 1.6 kg m−3 for DOT were high enough to reach the JIS K 1571 threshold requirement of weight loss less than 3% in subterranean termite resistance tests. Slightly higher termite mortality values were seen in the DOT than NaF treatments at respective retention levels. In decay resistance tests, no weight losses were seen at a NaF retention level of 2.3 kg m−3; however, a retention level of nearly 4 kg m−3 for DOT was needed for complete protection against both test fungi. In most cases, lower weight losses were obtained in NaF-treated specimens when compared to DOT. In mold resistance tests, neither NaF nor DOT at even the highest retention level was able to completely inhibit mold growth on the surfaces of treated specimens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Antibiotics are the most widely utilized therapeutic agents. Inappropriate use causes increase cost and antibiotic resistance. The World Health Organization recommends assessment of antibiotics use to guide prescribing practices. Objective: To describe the pattern of antibiotic usage among paediatric inpatients aged > 1 month to 15 years in a tertiary hospital in Sokoto, Nigeria. Methods: Febrile children were recruited prospectively by systematic random sampling from January to October 2018. Socio-demographics, diagnosis, antibiotics administered were obtained from case notes. The WHO indicators of use of antibiotics were employed for evaluation. Data was analysed with SPSS version 23. Results: Out of 352 children, 318 (90.3%) received antibiotics; commonest being Ceftriaxone in 155/318 (48.7%), Cefuroxime in 74 (23.2%), and Metronidazole in 29 (9.1%). Average number of antibiotics per patient was 2.3±1.1 with treatment duration of 4.3±1.4days. Ant ibiotic consumption was 937.2 days of antibiotic therapy/1000 patient days (DOT/PD). Generic name was used in 92.3% while 100% of the drugs were on the essential medicine list. Frequent diagnoses were severe malaria 98/352 (27.8%), respiratory infections 39 (11.1%) and severe malnutrition in 38 (10.8%). Only 6 (1.7%) patients had microbiologic evidence of infection. Conclusion: Utilization of antibiotics is higher than recommended. There is need for improved diagnostic facilities to avoid antibiotic overuse and its consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: System suitable for human brain imaging (fNIRS, DOT). We built a fiber-less prototype of an optical system with 156 channels each one consisting of an optode made of a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) and a pair of light emitting diodes (LEDs) operating at 700 nm and 830 nm. The system uses functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and diffuse optical tomography (DOT) imaging of the cortical activity of the human brain at frequencies above 1 Hz. In this paper, we discuss testing and system optimization performed through measurements on a multi-layered optical phantom with mechanically movable parts that simulate near-infrared light scattering inhomogeneities. The baseline optical characteristics of the phantom are carefully characterized and compared to those of human tissues. Here we discuss several technical aspects of the system development, such as LED light output drift and its possible compensation, SiPM linearity, corrections of channel signal differences, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We implement an imaging algorithm that investigates large phantom regions. Thanks to the use of SiPMs, very large source-to-detector distances are acquired with a high SNR and 2 Hz time resolution. • The spatial correspondence between fNIRS and fMRI detection of motor and visual task-related activity was good in terms of true positive rate. • fNIRS overlap of up to 68 % of the fMRI for analyses across subjects (group analysis) with an average overlap of 47.25% for analyses within subject. • At the group level, the positive predictive value of fNIRS was 51 % relative to fMRI. • The positive predictive value for within subject analyses was lower (41.5 %). • Results suggest whole-head fNIRS as a noninvasive imaging modality with promising clinical utility for the functional assessment of brain activity in superficial regions of cortex physically adjacent to the skull. Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) both measure the hemodynamic response, and so both imaging modalities are expected to have a strong correspondence in regions of cortex adjacent to the scalp. To assess whether fNIRS can be used clinically in a manner similar to fMRI, 22 healthy adult participants underwent same-day fMRI and whole-head fNIRS testing while they performed separate motor (finger tapping) and visual (flashing checkerboard) tasks. Analyses were conducted within and across subjects for each imaging approach, and regions of significant task-related activity were compared on the cortical surface. The spatial correspondence between fNIRS and fMRI detection of task-related activity was good in terms of true positive rate, with fNIRS overlap of up to 68 % of the fMRI for analyses across subjects (group analysis) and an average overlap of up to 47.25 % for individual analyses within subject. At the group level, the positive predictive value of fNIRS was 51 % relative to fMRI. The positive predictive value for within subject analyses was lower (41.5 %), reflecting the presence of significant fNIRS activity in regions without significant fMRI activity. This could reflect task-correlated sources of physiologic noise and/or differences in the sensitivity of fNIRS and fMRI measures to changes in separate (vs. combined) measures of oxy and de-oxyhemoglobin. The spin structure in a magnetic dot is studied as a function of the exchange coupling strength and dot size within the semiclassical approximation on a discrete lattice. As the exchange coupling is decreased or the size is increased, the ground state undergoes a phase change from a homogeneous single-domain ferromagnet (HSDF) to a spin vortex. The line separating these two phases has been calculated numerically for small system sizes. The dipolar interaction has been fully included in our calculations. Magnon frequencies in such a dot have also been calculated in both phases by the linearized equation of motion method. These results have also been reproduced from the Fourier transform of the spin autocorrelation function. From the magnon density of states (DOS), it is possible to identify the magnetic phase of the dot, as well as to compute their finite temperature magnetization or vorticity. Furthermore, the magnon modes have been characterized for both the homogeneous ferromagnetic and the vortex phase, and the magnon instability mechanism leading to the vortex-HSDF transition has also been identified. Recently, there has been a great amount of interest in developing multi-modality imaging techniques for oncologic research and clinical studies with the aim of obtaining complementary information and, thus, improving the detection and characterization of tumors. In this present work, the details of a combined MR-diffuse optical imaging system for dual-modality imaging of small animals are given. As a part of this effort, a multi-spectral frequency domain diffuse optical tomography system is integrated with an MRI system. Here, a network analyzer provides the rf modulation signal for the laser diodes and measures the amplitude and the phase of the detected signals. Photomultiplier tubes are utilized to measure low-level signals. The integration of this optical imaging system with the 4T MRI system is realized by incorporating a fiber adaptive interface inside the MR magnet. Coregistration is achieved by a special probe design utilizing fiducial markers. A finite element algorithm is used to solve the diffusion equation and an inverse solver based on this forward solver is implemented to calculate the absorption and scattering maps from the acquired data. The MR a priori information is used to guide the optical reconstruction algorithm. Phantom studies show that the absorption coefficient of a 7 mm inclusion in an irregular object located in 64 mm phantom is recovered with 11 % error when MR a priori information is used. ENU induced tumor model is used to test the performance of the system in vivo.

Animal-vehicle collisions are an important issue in North America. Accidents are numerous and result in human injuries and fatalities, property damage, and the death or injury of the animals concerned. Some animal species may be affected at the population level and face increased risk of local or regional extinction due to the high number of road-kills and other negative effects of roads and traffic. Systematically collected road-kill data can help quantify the magnitude of this problem and potential changes in road-kill occurrences and “hot spots” over time. Such data allows for prioritization and focusing of mitigation efforts to avoid or reduce collisions. However, not all DOT’s or DOT districts record animal-vehicle collisions and the DOT’s that do record road-kill data often use different methods. A national standard and tool for the recording of animal-vehicle collisions would not only stimulate DOT’s and other organizations to collect animal-vehicle collision data, but would also allow for more effective analyses and use of the data. The Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University (WTI-MSU) has developed software that allows for easy, standardized, and spatially precise collection of animal-vehicle collision data. The software runs on a Pocket PC that is linked to a Global Positioning System (GPS). The software distinguishes between “monitoring” and “incidental observation” modes and tracks the route of the observer. Road-kill data, including species name as well as optional parameters such as the sex of the animal, are stored in a separate file that can be uploaded to a PC and imported into standard spreadsheet or mapping software. Recording road-kill observations with this tool eliminates manual data entry and transcription. Beyond the basic data-collection software, we anticipate developing data-management and analysis software that will allow for easy merging and analyses of data from numerous sources, including cluster analyses, and linking to other spatial data in a Geographic Information System (GIS). This has the potential to allow for much faster and better feedback to plan and prioritize for mitigation to address human-safety or conservation concerns. Once mitigation measures have been put in place, the tools and procedures described above allow for proper evaluation of these measures. We expect that the tools and procedures will ultimately result in fewer animal-vehicle collisions, less work for road maintenance crews, and a reduction in the transportation and disposal costs of the carcasses. Along with the technics that allows archaeology to adopt a precise knowledge about the composition of the materiality, also exists a critical thought that claims for take into account experience, perception and creativity. In the latter, we find Art-Archaeology approach. With this at background emerged the idea of the presence and the ontology of the ‘dot’ in archaeology, identified in the ongoing process of the attendance of a meeting at Kyoto, in the excavation of a simulated site, in the survey of an unidentified site and in a short research about Prehistoric tattoo. This idea, in its explicit simplicity, is part of a creative thought situated in the roots of the archaeological practice. In this paper I reflect about this through an artistic photo-essay that is at the same time an artistic and theoretical exercise, with the intention to identify the existence of the ‘dot’ in different dimensions of archaeology, and to make theory making art.

This is noteworthy since executive functions are core aspects of cognitive processing. The present study was aimed to investigate if three occupational complexity factors (with data, people, and things) of main lifetime occupation were related to performance in executive tasks (inhibition, switching, updating). We analyzed cross-sectional data that were available for 225 participants aged 50–75 years. Results from structural equation models showed that higher complexity levels of working with data were related to lower error rates in the updating component of cognitive control. In addition, higher rates of complexity working with people was associated with lower error rates in task-switching, which also persisted after adjustment of fluid intelligence. Complexity with things, however, was not related to performance in the executive tasks. Future studies would benefit from a longitudinal design to investigate if the results from this study also hold in the long term and to further investigate the directionality between factors.

The article has as main objective to discover where were Spanish dots before becoming for flamenco and find their traces in the commerce of Spain. To do this the research we will focus on the formation of the Spanish nation between 1750 and 1847. The main method of research has been the reading of images and graphic material related to gypsies, ballet and flamenco. We were immersed in the history, the etymology and semiotics of the word to find the source of the polka dots in the print of the typical flamenco dress in Spain. In the beginnings of flamenco, it was not uncommon to see a flamenco dressed with dots. The gypsy wore skirts plain or with other prints such as paintings vichy. To find the reason of this event we have focused on the evolution of the textile industry which has led us to the evolution of the rules of tariffs in the customs and this is how we were able to see that theyhad vetoed the entrance to the trade in Spain, considered as foreigners since 1792 intermittently until 1841. During that time, the noun acquired negative connotations in Spain, assimilating to sin or defect. Introduction: We assessed the influence of a result-based financing (RBF) model, which included incentives for Primary Healthcare facilities on TB treatment outcomes. Methodology: We compared TB patients > 17 years and their treatment outcomes among those who did and did not benefit from RBF-model in 14 districts of Odeska oblast, Ukraine in 2017. Log-binomial regression was used to examine factors associated with being included in RBFmodel. Results: Of 2,269 reported TB patients, 308 (14%) were included in RBF-model. Most patients in the RBF-model were from rural areas 229 (74%), unemployed 218 (71%), and HIV-infected 131 (43%). Individuals from urban areas (Adjusted risk ratio, ARR =0.9, 95% Confidence Interval, CI:0.89-0.94), having drug-resistant TB (ARR = 0.3, 95% CI: 0.18-0.45), and relapse TB (ARR = 0.6, 95% CI:0.40-0.83) were less likely to be included in RBF-model. Favorable outcomes in new/relapse cases with RBF-model was 89% compared with 41% (p < 0.001) without RBF. Similarly, for other retreatment this was 83% versus 40% (p < 0.001). Failures in the no-RBF group was 29% for new and relapse cases while for other retreatment cases, it was 26% (significantly higher than in the RBF-model). Conclusion: RBF-model is effective in achieving high levels of favorable TB treatment outcomes. Almost three-in-ten TB patients in non-RBF category failed TB treatment despite having drug-susceptible TB. Efforts are now needed to include it within ongoing public health reforms and assess the feasibility of scaling-up this intervention through implementation research and dedicated funding.
