51. Life satisfaction, social participation and symptoms of depression in young adult carers: evidence from 21 European countries.

Abstract: This study aims to examine whether the association between life satisfaction and depressive symptoms in young carers was moderated by social participation. Cross-sectional data were extracted from the 7th wave of the European Social Survey. Our sample included 673 young carers and 1606 non-carers (aged 14–18 years) drawn from 21 participating countries who completed measures of life satisfaction, social participation and depression symptoms. As expected lower life satisfaction predicted higher symptoms of depression in young carers but social participation did not. However, as predicted, social participation moderated the relationship between life satisfaction and depression, with young carers who had higher life satisfaction and higher social participation experiencing lower levels of depression symptoms. Further, this effect was strongest in those with the highest rates of social participation with peers. The implications of the link between life satisfaction, social participation and depressive symptoms in young carers is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

53. The Time-Varying Nature of the Overreaction Effect: Evidence from the UK

Abstract: Previous studies on the overreaction effect in the UK show that prior losers consistently outperform prior winners in the period 1975 to 1990. This paper extends current knowledge by assessing the above phenomenon in the UK market for the period 1987 to 2007. In contrast to earlier research, we produce evidence of a weak presence of the overreaction effect for the latest test period. Further, we show that, after adjusting for size, the overreaction effect almost disappears and any additional excess post-formation return to prior-losers is attributable to market cycles. This study implies that the presence of the overreaction effect in the UK stock market is time-varying and difficult to exploit in practice.

We aimed to describe recovery 1 year after hospital discharge for COVID-19, identify factors associated with patient-perceived recovery, and identify potential therapeutic targets by describing the underlying inflammatory profiles of the previously described recovery clusters at 5 months after hospital discharge.

Abstract: Concanavalin A (Con A) activates nonimmune human lymphocytes in vitro to undergo transformation, DNA synthesis, and lymphotoxin (LT) secretion. LT secretion is inhibited (within minutes) when free and membrane-bound Con A are removed by washing or incubation with the competitive inhibitor, α-methyl mannoside. LT secretion can be reinitiated by addition of fresh Con A. While LT can be rapidly regulated, blast transformation and cellular DNA synthesis are under less restrictive control. Although they appear to be related, LT secretion and lymphocyte transformation seem to be regulated by independent control mechanisms. These studies indicate that recognition and contact of lymphocyte membrane sites initiate as well as regulate the efferent or destructive phase of cell-mediated immune (CMI) reactions. A model of how lymphocytes could employ LT in specific and nonspecific cytodestructive CMI reactions is presented. © 1974.

60. Randomised controlled trial to investigate the use of high-frequency airway oscillations as training to improve dyspnoea (TIDe) in COPD

Abstract: BackgroundChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by symptomatic dyspnoea and reduced exercise tolerance, in part as a result muscle weakness, for which inspiratory muscle training (IMT) may be useful. Excess mucus hypersecretion commonly coexists in COPD and may lead to reduce ventilation, further impacting on breathlessness. Devices for sputum clearance may be employed to aid mucus expectoration. This trial aimed to explore the effectiveness of a combined IMT and high-frequency airway oscillating (HFAO) device in the management of dyspnoea.MethodsThis was a double-blinded, randomised sham-controlled trial which recruited symptomatic patients with COPD. Patients were randomised to either a HFAO device (Aerosure) or sham device for 8 weeks, three times a day. The primary outcome was the Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire dyspnoea (CRQ-D) domain. Pre-specified subgroup analyses were performed including those with respiratory muscle weakness, excessive sputum and frequent exacerbators.Results104 participants (68% men, mean (SD) age 69.75 years (7.41), forced expiratory volume in 1 s per cent predicted 48.22% (18.75)) were recruited to this study with 96 participants completing. No difference in CRQ-D was seen between groups (0·28, 95% CI −0.19 to 0.75, p=0.24), though meaningful improvements were seen over time in both groups (mean (SD) HFAO 0.45 (0.78), p<0.01; sham 0.73 (1.09), p<0.01). Maximal inspiratory pressure significantly improved in the HFAO group over sham (5.26, 95% CI 0.34 to 10.19, p=0.05). Similar patterns were seen in the subgroup analysis.ConclusionThere were no statistical differences between the HFAO and the sham group in improving dyspnoea measured by the CRQ-D.Trial registration numberISRCTN45695543.

It was concluded that the expected growth in videodisc technology was large enough to warrant an investigation of its uses in terms of increasing instructional productivity and reducing instructional costs. 64. Isotropic cellular structure design strategies based on triply periodic minimal surfaces

Abstract: Isotropy is a desired characteristic in cellular structures for load bearing and energy absorption applications that must respond uniformly under external loads in all orientations. Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) cellular structures are attracting much attention for such applications due to their demonstrated high performance, tailorable properties, and open cell architecture. However, TPMS structures usually display stiffness anisotropy. In this work, new design strategies are presented for isotropic TPMS-based cellular structures, revealing a large available design space in terms of relative density and relative stiffness. The first design strategy arranges TPMS-based cells in a Simple-Cubic/Face-Centred Cubic inspired pattern, resulting in reduced elastic anisotropy. Two parametric optimisation approaches involving level-set mid-surface offsetting and the functional grading of relative density are then applied in a second step to eliminate any residual elastic anisotropy. Anisotropy is characterised through finite element analysis using the Zener ratio. Four families of cells are optimised, each based on a different TPMS unit cell, and then additively manufactured using the material extrusion process with polylactic acid. Finally, experimental quasi-static compressive tests are conducted to characterise stiffness, strength, and energy absorption properties. Optimised designs are tested in three crystal orientations ([001], [101] and [111]) and manufactured in three orthogonal print orientations. The Primitive TPMS-based design is the stiffest of the four designs reaching 64.4% of the Hashin-Shtrikman upper bound of bulk modulus at 20% relative density. Experimental results validate all four optimised cell designs for elastic isotropy and indicate that all the cell designs are also isotropic in terms of crushing strength and energy absorption.

Abstract: L’Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament et des produits de santé (ANSM) est une agence réglementaire et de santé publique. Ses actions de régulation, de police sanitaire et de protection de la santé publique imposent une parfaite adéquation avec le terrain et les différents acteurs concernés par l’utilisation des produits de santé. Depuis 2019, l’ANSM a adapté son organisation afin de promouvoir et améliorer ses interactions dans le cadre de sa politique d’ouverture à la société civile. Afin d’accompagner cette ambitieuse mutation et soutenir ses agents, l’Agence a recruté des conseillers reflétant les principaux profils d’utilisateurs de produits de santé : médecins, pharmaciens et patients. En collège ou individuellement, ils apportent un regard du « terrain » à chaque étape des processus de décision. Ils peuvent participer à l’évaluation des signalements et demandes comme aux validations de rapports ou aux instances d’échanges avec les parties prenantes. Ils interviennent notamment lorsque l’analyse nécessite une expertise au-delà des aspects scientifiques ou réglementaires. Ils peuvent aider à prendre en compte certains aspects du soin et les difficultés de terrain. Les conseillers participent à la lisibilité et à l’adéquation entre l’expertise réglementaire et/ou scientifique et le vécu des utilisateurs. Au-delà de l’aspect scientifique et thérapeutique, le médicament est aussi un objet économique, social et politique. Ainsi, sa régulation est particulièrement concernée par le besoin de démocratie sanitaire dont les conseillers sont les facilitateurs. Celle-ci impose une participation active des professionnels de santé, des patients et plus largement de la société civile dans la prise de décision. Dans ce contexte, la prise en compte de la pluralité des points de vue dans la régulation des produits de santé est nécessaire mais complexe. Elle peut être facilitée par l’adaptation des organisations, comme l’intégration de conseillers.

Abstract: COVID-19 can cause ongoing and persistent symptoms (such as breathlessness and fatigue) that lead to reduced functional capacity. There are parallels in symptoms and functional limitations in adults with post-COVID symptoms and adults with chronic respiratory diseases. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a key treatment for adults with chronic respiratory diseases, with the aims to improve symptom management and increase functional capacity. Given the similarities in presentation and aims, a pulmonary rehabilitation program may be optimal to meet the needs of those with ongoing symptoms after COVID-19.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: COPD is characterized by expiratory flow limitation, which results in symptomatic dyspnea and reduced exercise capacity. Changes in breathing mechanics mean the respiratory muscles are unable to respond to the ventilatory demands, increasing the sensation of dyspnea. A high-frequency oscillating device has been developed to improve dyspnea in patients with COPD. We conducted a feasibility trial to gain insight into the potential for recruitment, retention, and study design for a future randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Symptomatic subjects with COPD were included on the basis of a Medical Research Council (MRC) score ≥ 3 and FEV1/FVC < 0.70). Patients were excluded if they received pulmonary rehabilitation within the last 6 months. The intervention employed the device for 8 weeks, 3 times daily. Clinical outcomes included the MRC score, maximal expiratory and inspiratory pressures (PEmax/PImax), the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT), and the endurance shuttle walk test (ESWT). RESULTS: We successfully recruited 23 subjects with established COPD (65.2% male, mean age 65 ± 5.03 y, mean % predicted FEV1 43.9 ± 16, mean FEV1/FVC ratio 0.46 ± 0.13, and median [interquartile range] MRC 4 [3-5]). There was a significant change in MRC from 4 to 3 pre to post intervention (P = .003). There was a statistically significant difference in PEmax P < .008 and PImax P = .044. There were no significant differences observed in the ISWT or ESWT. CONCLUSIONS: This study design appeared feasible to proceed to a clinical effectiveness trial. The use of the device for 8 weeks showed a significant improvement in PEmax, PImax, and reduced symptomatic dyspnea on the MRC dyspnea score. Abstract: Although nickel (Ni) is recognized as plant nutrient since the turn of the 21st century, uncertainty remains about its optimum application rates and forms. This paper focuses on Ni application in soils, relating to its effect as a plant micronutrient. Specifically, the effect of Ni on the activity of urease in soybean plants is examined. The effects of applying four Ni rates in two different soil types were tested. A full factorial 2 x 4 blocked design experiment was established under controlled conditions. Ni rates (0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mg of Ni·kg-1 of soil) were applied in two soils with contrasting clay contents. The addition of Ni increased the urease activity in soybean plants but was affected by soil textural differences. The highest urease activity was achieved by the application of 1.0 mg⋅kg-1 Ni in the sandy soil. The absorption of Ni by the plants and its availability was found to be soil texture dependent. The rate of 0.25 mg⋅kg-1 Ni increased the soybean dry matter production by 25% in the sandy soil. In conclusion, Ni was effective in promoting plant growth and biomass accumulation although depending on soil clay proportion. For soybean, there was no correlation between urease activity and biomass accumulation. The results of this study indicate a clear Ni effect in different type of soils in São Paulo state, serving as a solid initial doses indicator for soybean fertilization programs and future studies on nickel in Soybean. Abstract: Designing metallic cellular structures with triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) sheet cores is a novel approach for lightweight and multi-functional structural applications. Different from current honeycombs and lattices, TPMS sheet structures are composed of continuous and smooth shells, allowing for large surface areas and continuous internal channels. In this paper, we investigate the mechanical properties and energy absorption abilities of three types of TPMS sheet structures (Primitive, Diamond, and Gyroid) fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) with 316 L stainless steel under compression loading and classify their failure mechanisms and printing accuracy with the help of numerical analysis. Experimental results reveal the superior stiffness, plateau stress and energy absorption ability of TPMS sheet structures compared to body-centred cubic lattices, with Diamond-type sheet structures performing best. Nonlinear finite element simulation results also show that Diamond and Gyroid sheet structures display relatively uniform stress distributions across all lattice cells under compression, leading to stable collapse mechanisms and desired energy absorption performance. In contrast, Primitive-type structures display rapid diagonal shear band development followed by localized wall buckling. Lastly, an energy absorption diagram is developed to facilitate a systematic way to select optimal densities of TPMS structures for energy absorbing applications.

Abstract: Purpose: This paper aims to reviews Sukuk risk classification schemes based on extending and adapting the risk classification schemes of conventional finance. It is then argued that risk classification schemes based on Sukuk structure provide significant insights into Sukuk risk not obtainable from conventional schemes. This is because Sukuk structure risk classification schemes link Sukuk risk more directly to the fundamental causal factors creating those risks. These links are less evident in conventional risk classification schemes. It is hypothesised that Sukuk structure risk factors will prove to be highly significant in multifactor expected return regressions. Design/methodology/approach: The paper argues that, given the paucity of the empirical data currently available to researchers in Islamic finance, greater care needs to be taken in hypothesis development than is necessary for conventional finance. The limited data available should be used for testing hypotheses and not “wasted” in hypothesis formation. Through a meta-analysis of the existing literature on Sukuk risk, it is hypothesised that Sukuk structure risks will be highly significant in explaining Sukuk returns and returns volatilities in empirical tests. Findings: The main Sukuk structures, debt based, equity based, assets based, agency based and hybrid structures, arise directly from the requirement of Sukuk to conform to the Shariahand to the fundamental ethical principles of Islamic finance and business. Further, Sukuk risk profiles are directly related to Sukuk structures. Thus, Sukuk structure risks are essentially Shariahrisks. The paper presents a Sukuk risk classification matrix based on an evaluation of Sukuk structure risks. Research limitations/implications: The findings on the relation of Sukuk risks to Sukuk structures require corroboration by rigorous empirical tests. Social implications: The paper contributes to work on the creation of evidence-based risk management techniques in Islamic finance and to the expansion of ethical financial management. Originality/value: The paper is one of the early detailed academic studies on the evaluation of risks arising from Sukuk structures.

Abstract: The objective of this retrospective study was to assess what factors affected length of stay (LOS) in 183 adult patients with native septic arthritis. Diagnosis was based on a representative physical examination, fluid cell count/Gram stain, and organisms isolated from joint fluid culture. Data included demographics, comorbidities, laboratory results, treatment, and discharge times. Joint fluid cultures were positive in 55% (100 of 183) of the patients, and these patients were the subjects of this study. Blood cultures were taken for 65 patients and were positive in 54%; when positive, they were found to be the same as isolates from joint fluid analysis 91% of the time. Surgical washout less than 24 hours from diagnosis affected LOS (12.25 vs 16.96 days for >24 hours; P<.05), but pathogen type and comorbid conditions did not. Average time for culture sensitivities was 4±1 days. Almost half of the patients had MSSA. Delays that could be controlled were getting an early diagnosis and expedient surgical washout of the joint. A lack of insurance and a requirement of intravenous antibiotics prolonged stay, whereas age, sex, and ethnicity did not. Waiting for bacterial sensitivities was a factor that could not be controlled. The authors believe that polymerase chain reaction or other technologies could lead to early diagnosis and expedient surgery. 87. Craniofacial and upper airway morphology in pediatric sleep-disordered breathing and changes in quality of life with rapid maxillary expansion.

Abstract: Introduction: The association between pediatric sleep-disordered breathing caused by upper airway obstruction and craniofacial morphology is poorly understood and contradictory. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of children at risk for sleep-disordered breathing, as identified in an orthodontic setting by validated screening questionnaires, and to examine associations with their craniofacial and upper airway morphologies. A further aim was to assess the change in quality of life related to sleep-disordered breathing for affected children undergoing rapid maxillary expansion to correct a palatal crossbite or widen a narrow maxilla. Methods: A prospective case-control study with children between 8 and 17 years of age (n = 81) at an orthodontic clinic was undertaken. The subjects were grouped as high risk or low risk for sleep-disordered breathing based on the scores from a validated 22-item Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire and the Obstructive Sleep Apnea-18 Quality of Life Questionnaire. Variables pertaining to a screening clinical examination, cephalometric assessment, and dental cast analysis were tested for differences between the 2 groups at baseline. Ten children who underwent rapid maxillary expansion were followed longitudinally until removal of the appliance approximately 9 months later with a repeated Obstructive Sleep Apnea-18 Quality of Life Questionnaire. All data were collected blinded to the questionnaire results. Results: The frequency of palatal crossbite involving at least 3 teeth was significantly higher in the high-risk group at 68.2%, compared with the low-risk group at 23.2% (P <0.0001). Average quality of life scores in the high-risk group indicated reduced quality of life related to sleep-disordered breathing by 16% compared with children in the low-risk group at baseline (P <0.0001). Cephalometrically, mean inferior airway space, posterior nasal spine to adenoidal mass distance, and adenoidal mass to soft palate distance were reduced in the high-risk group compared with the low-risk group by 1.87 mm (P <0.03), 2.82 mm (P <0.04), and 2.13 mm (P <0.03), respectively. The mean maxillary intercanine, maxillary interfirst premolar, maxillary interfirst molar, mandibular intercanine, and mandibular interfirst premolar widths were reduced in the high-risk group compared with the low-risk group by 4.22 mm (P <0.0001), 3.92 mm (P <0.0001), 4.24 mm (P <0.0001), 1.50 mm (P <0.01), and 1.84 mm (P <0.01), respectively. Children treated with rapid maxillary expansion showed an average improvement of 14% in quality of life scores in the high-risk group compared with the low-risk group, which showed a slight worsening in quality of life related to sleep-disordered breathing by an average of 1% (P <0.04), normalizing the quality of life scores in the high-risk children to the baseline scores compared with the low-risk group. Conclusions: Children at high risk for sleep-disordered breathing are characterized by reduced quality of life, reduced nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal sagittal dimensions, palatal crossbite, and reduced dentoalveolar transverse widths in the maxillary and mandibular arches. No sagittal or vertical craniofacial skeletal cephalometric predictors were identified for children at high risk for sleep-disordered breathing. In the short term, rapid maxillary expansion might aid in improvement of the quality of life for children with a narrow maxilla in the milder end of the sleep-disordered breathing spectrum. Abstract: Abstract: Zoosporic fungi (often called chytrids) have been observed frequently on substrata in habitats with extremely low pH but never with extremely high pH. In the present study, growth, zoospore release and survival of some zoosporic fungi (Phyla Blastocladiomycota and Chytridiomycota) isolated from soil in Australia were examined in the laboratory to assess tolerance of extremes in pH. All 21 isolates grew rapidly in both solid and liquid PYG growth media (peptone, yeast extract, glucose) with pH values near neutrality. Most of the sixteen isolates tested could be maintained in culture on solid growth media at pH 4.7 and pH 8.9. One isolate grew down to pH 2.9, four isolates down to pH 3.3 and four isolates up to pH 11.2. In liquid PYG growth media all of the eight isolates tested grew (increased biomass) at pH 5.5 and pH 7.6, most isolates grew rapidly down to pH 4.5, some grew up to pH 11.2 but none of the isolates grew rapidly, if at all, at pH 2.9. The patterns of release of zoospores broadly reflect the patterns of growth at different pH values. Twenty one isolates survived for 7d at 20°C in liquid PYG growth media adjusted to pH 4.7, nine isolates survived down to pH 2.9, twelve up to pH 9.3, eight up to pH 11.2, and three even survived at both pH 2.9 and pH 11.2. The ecological significance of these data remains unclear. Patterns of survival, patterns of growth on solid and in liquid media and relative rates of zoospore release suggest ecotypes which prefer acidic, neutral or alkaline habitats, but these physiological properties were not highly correlated with either the pH of the soils from which these fungi were isolated nor with the taxonomic group in which they are placed. In general, many zoosporic fungi appear to be well adapted to a wider range of pH values than those found in the environments from which these fungi were isolated, and they quickly recover after brief exposure to extremes of pH. Abstract: Core analysis from reservoir rock plays an important role in oil and gas exploration as it can provide a large number of rock properties. Some of these rock properties can be extracted by image analysis of microscopic rock images in the visible light range. Such properties include the size, shape, and distribution of pores and grains, or more generally the texture, mineral distribution, and so on. A novel laboratory instrument and method allows for easy and reliable core imaging. This method is applicable even when the core sample is in poor shape. The capabilities of this technique can be verified by core images, image interpretation, and dynamic measurements of rock samples during flooding. A microscopic imager instrument is operated in video acquisition mode and can measure additional properties, such as fluid mobility, by detecting the emergence of injected fluids across the core sample. Abstract: Abstract: The ability of seventy isolates (comprising 43 species) of Aspergillus and Penicillium, from soil and compost, to grow on sources of carbon and phosphate from plant remains was examined. Only two isolates from compost actively degraded crystalline cellulose, though most others grew on carboxymethyl cellulose. Most isolates produced biomass on cellobiose, and all on glucose, pectin and xylan. All fungi grew on phytic acid and most on DNA. If these data indicate utilisation of carbon and organic phosphorus in nature, then isolates of Trichocomaceae from soil have limited access to cellulose and considerably greater reliance on pectin and hemicellulose. Abstract: Introduction and ObjectivesChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterised by expiratory flow limitation contributing to dyspnoea and impacting on exercise capacity and quality of life. Inspiratory muscle training is commonly used to improve inspiratory muscle strength and endurance, exercise capacity and quality of life. The High Frequency Airway Oscillating (HFAO) device uses flow resistance to provide combined inspiratory and expiratory muscle training. It is hypothesised that the use of a HFAO device may improve the strength of the respiratory muscles resulting in reduced sensation of dyspnoea. This study was designed to explore the feasibility of HFAO in COPD.MethodsPatients with symptomatic COPD were included (MRC of ≥3). This was a single arm feasibility study using a HFAO device. All participants used the device for 5 min, 3 times per day, for eight-weeks. The primary outcomes were recruitment, attrition and compliance. Self-reported daily diaries identified participants as adherent if they completed ≥75% of device use. Secondary outcome measures included maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (Pimax/Pemax), Incremental and Endurance Shuttle Walking Tests (ISWT/ESWT) and health related quality of life questionnaires. Data was analysed by a Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and considered statistically significant if p<0.05.Results23 participants with COPD were recruited (65% male, mean [SD] age 65[5] years, FEV1%predicted 44[16], FEV1/FVC ratio 0.46 [0.13]), median [IQR] MRC 4 [3–5], of which 20 participants completed the intervention. 62% of potential participants were recruited and there was an attrition rate of 13%. 90% of participants were considered adherent to device use. 95. Review of shape-morphing automobile structures: concepts and outlook

Abstract: The continuous drive for increased fuel efficiency and sustained innovation in the automobile industry requires the adoption of radically new technological advances. Road vehicle aerodynamic design is primarily concerned with reduction in the drag and generation of a downforce. Current trends in both aircraft and wind turbine blade design show significant interest in shape-adaptive (morphing) advanced structural concepts for improved aerodynamic performance or the realization of new functionality. Morphing structures are also of interest because they have the potential to create designs of simple construction and reduced mass. However, there is an inherent contradiction between the need to create compliant structures to keep actuator demands low and the requirement for designing stiff load-carrying structures. This highlights the key design challenge for morphing structures. Ways of addressing these conflicting demands include the use of advanced composite materials which have extremely anisotropic stiffness properties or multistable behaviour. This review provides a perspective on recent developments in research on morphing structures and the potential applications for these emerging technologies in automobile aerodynamic design.

97. Rhizophlyctis rosea(Rhizophlyctidales, Chytridiomycota) in soil: frequency, abundance and density of colonization of lens paper baits

Abstract: The distribution of Rhizophlyctis roseawas examined in soils from 22 locations including disturbed and undisturbed habitats in eastern Australia. Thalli of Rh. roseawere observed on baits from 60% of the sites (67% agricultural and 33% natural soils). Within the disturbed habitats, samples from four sites that experience different temperature ranges were assessed for frequency, abundance, number of thalli and density of colonization of the baits. Lens paper baits were placed into Petri dishes with sterile deionized water and air-dried soil and incubated for up to four days at 20, 35 or 40°C, and at 20°C after freezing (−15°C) and heating (80°C) the soil. The abundance, frequency, number of thalli and density of colonization varied among the samples analysed, with the greatest abundance, number of thalli and density for Pitt Town Bottoms and the highest frequency for Pitt Town Bottoms and Narrabri soils. All isolates grew and released zoospores after heat and freezing treatments. Freezing soil before baiting increased the number of thalli and density of colonization of baits, while heating decreased the frequency and abundance of Rh. rosea.

98. A shape adaptive airfoil for a wind turbine blade

Abstract: The loads on wind turbine components are primarily from the blades. It is important to control these blade loads in order to avoid damaging the wind turbine. Rotor control technology is currently limited to controlling the rotor speed and the pitch of the blades. As blades increase in length it becomes less desirable to pitch the entire blade as a single rigid body, but instead there is a requirement to control loads more precisely along the length of the blade. This can be achieved with aerodynamic control devices such as flaps. Morphing technologies are good candidates for wind turbine flaps because they have the potential to create structures that have the conflicting abilities of being load carrying, light-weight and shape adaptive. A morphing flap design with a highly anisotropic cellular structure is presented which is able to undergo large deflections and high strains without a large actuation penalty. An aeroelastic analysis couples the work done by aerodynamic loads on the flap, the flap strain energy and the required actuation work to change shape. The morphing flap is experimentally validated with a manufactured demonstrator and shown to have reduced actuation requirements compared to a conventional hinged flap.

99. Conditions That Diminish Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cell Activities Stimulate Cross-Protective Immunity

Abstract: ABSTRACTImmunity conferred by conventional vaccines is restricted to a narrow range of closely related strains, highlighting the unmet medical need for the development of vaccines that elicit protection against multiple pathogenic serotypes. Here we show that a Salmonellabivalent vaccine comprised of strains that lack and overproduce DNA adenine methylase (Dam) conferred cross-protective immunity to salmonella clinical isolates of human and animal origin. Protective immunity directly correlated with increased levels of cross-reactive opsonizing antibodies and memory T cells and a diminished expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) that are responsible for the immune suppression linked to several conditions of host stress, including chronic microbial infections, traumatic insults, and many forms of cancer. Further, aged mice contained increased numbers of MDSCs and were more susceptible to Salmonellainfection than young mice, suggesting a role for these cells in the immune declines associated with the natural aging process. These data suggest that interventions capable of reducing MDSC presence and activities may allow corresponding increases in B- and T-cell stimulation and benefit the ability of immunologically diverse populations to be effectively vaccinated as well as reducing the risk of susceptible individuals to infectious disease.

100. Role of Redox Imbalance in the Molecular Mechanisms Responsible for Immunosenescence

Abstract: The elderly suffer impairments to their immune system, evidenced by higher susceptibility to infections, cancer, and many diseases believed to be autoimmune in nature. A dysregulated overexpression of many proinflammatory cytokines also occurs with aging, as does the synthesis of enzymes that control expression of inflammatory lipid mediators and reactive oxygen species. An inappropriate activation of redox-controlled transcription factors, like nuclear factor-κB, occurs in many tissues from aged donors, and has been linked to excesses in cellular oxidative stress. Recently, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) has been evaluated for its effects on inflammatory and adaptive immune processes. PPARα provides redox-balancing influences on various lymphoid cell types and their inducible responses. We recently discovered that PPARα transiently suppresses the transcription of γ-interferon (IFNγ) by inhibiting the induction of T-bet. We now report that PPARα expression in CD4+ T cells is affected by the aging process. Lower PPARα levels are present in aged CD4+ T cells, and appear responsible for the suppressed interleukin-2 and exaggerated IFNγ responses by these cells. Restoration of PPARα, T-bet, interleukin-2, and IFNγ responses was found in T cells from aged animals supplemented with vitamin E, suggesting that interventions that focus on restoring redox balance might benefit the ailing aged immune system.
