The goal of this work is to present two sides of project management research: projects regarded as a solution to major contemporary economic, social, and environmental concerns, and projects perceived as an area in which modern slavery, corruption, and greenwashing operate in secret. This article, based on a literature review, is a voice in the discussion on important research problems as well as choices made by researchers in the context of the real impact of the topics discussed on social awareness and organisational policies. The first section of the paper focuses on the positive aspects of projects, namely the role that project management knowledge and abilities play in tackling critical social problems. The second section of the work exposes heinous project management practices, most notably modern slavery. For projects to become a means of increasing efficiency rather than a vehicle for slavery and inequality, uncomfortable subjects must be raised and risks discussed, particularly those coming from insufficient attention to the challenges of the dark side of projects.
