[1] Based on austral winter mesospheric wind observations from three closely deployed Antarctic Peninsula stations (King George Island, Palmer, and Rothera), mesospheric wind disturbances induced by gravity waves are examined. The mesospheric winds to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula below 88 km were affected by gravity waves, while the winds on the east side of the peninsula were unperturbed. The gravity waves are most likely generated by orographic features of the peninsula. Because the strong westerly stratospheric wind filtered out all eastward propagating waves, only westward propagating waves can reach the mesosphere on the west side of the peninsula. This data set shows the strong gravity wave effect on small scales. Hence, the mesospheric wind data at one station may not be representative of the region for global waves like tides. Small local features can greatly affect the mesospheric winds and may impact the interpretation of global waves. High-density deployment of mesospheric wind instruments may be needed in some cases.

The advantages of using a composite day analysis for all-sky interferometric meteor radars when measuring mean winds and tides are widely known. On the other hand, problems arise if this technique is applied to Hocking's (2005) gravity wave analysis for all-sky meteor radars. In this paper we describe how a simple change in the procedure makes it possible to use a composite day in Hocking's analysis. Also, we explain how a modified composite day can be constructed to test its ability to measure gravity wave momentum fluxes. Test results for specified mean, tidal, and gravity wave fields, including tidal amplitudes and gravity wave momentum fluxes varying strongly with altitude and/or time, suggest that the modified composite day allows characterization of monthly mean profiles of the gravity wave momentum fluxes, with good accuracy at least at the altitudes where the meteor counts are large (from 89 to 92.5 km). In the present work we also show that the variances measured with Hocking's method are often contaminated by the tidal fields and suggest a method of empirical correction derived from a simple simulation model. The results presented here greatly increase our confidence because they show that our technique is able to remove the tide-induced false variances from Hocking's analysis.

[1] The Naval Research Laboratory three-dimensional simulation code SAMI3/ESF is used to study the response of the postsunset ionosphere to plane gravity waves. The effect of the vertical wind component of the wave is included as well as the effect of the background vertical wind, which can suppress equatorial spread F (ESF). It is shown that the strength of the coupling of the gravity wave to ESF increases with the vertical wavelength of the gravity wave. Long vertical wavelength modes (λ > 100 km) are more effective for seeding ESF.

We present a study of horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) during the boreal winters of 2009–2010 and 2012–2013 produced with a new high-altitude numerical weather prediction (NWP) system. This system is based on a modified version of the Navy Global Environmental Model (NAVGEM) with an extended vertical domain up to ∼116 km altitude coupled with a hybrid four-dimensional variational (4DVAR) data assimilation system that assimilates both standard operational meteorological observations in the troposphere and satellite-based observations of temperature, ozone and water vapor in the stratosphere and mesosphere. NAVGEM-based MLT analyzed winds are validated using independent meteor radar wind observations from nine different sites ranging from 69°N–67°S latitude. Time-averaged NAVGEM zonal and meridional wind profiles between 75 and 95 km altitude show good qualitative and quantitative agreement with corresponding meteor radar wind profiles. Wavelet analysis finds that the 3-hourly NAVGEM and 1-hourly radar winds both exhibit semi-diurnal, diurnal, and quasi-diurnal variations whose vertical profiles of amplitude and phase are also in good agreement. Wavelet analysis also reveals common time-frequency behavior in both NAVGEM and radar winds throughout the Northern extratropics around the times of major stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs) in January 2010 and January 2013, with a reduction in semi-diurnal amplitudes beginning around the time of a mesospheric wind reversal at 60°N that precedes the SSW, followed by an amplification of semi-diurnal amplitudes that peaks 10–14 days following the onset of the mesospheric wind reversal. The initial results presented in this study demonstrate that the wind analyses produced by the high-altitude NAVGEM system accurately capture key features in the observed MLT winds during these two boreal winter periods. © 2016. The Deep Propagating Gravity Wave Experiment (DEEPWAVE) project was conducted over New Zealand and the surrounding regions during June and July 2014, to more fully understand the generation, propagation, and effects of atmospheric gravity waves. A large suite of instruments collected data from the ground to the upper atmosphere (~100 km), with several new remote-sensing instruments operating on board the NSF Gulfstream V (GV) research aircraft, which was the central measurement platform of the project. On 14 July, during one of the research flights (research flight 23), a spectacular event was observed as the GV flew in the lee of the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands (50.7°S). An apparent "ship wave" pattern was imaged in the OH layer (at ~83.5 km) by the Utah State University Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper and evolved significantly over four successive passes spanning more than 4 h. The waves were associated with orographic forcing generated by relatively strong (15-20 m/s) near-surface wind flowing over the rugged island topography. The mountain wave had an amplitude T_ ~ 10 K, a dominant horizontal wavelength ~40 km, achieved a momentum flux exceeding 300 m2 s-2, and eventually exhibited instability and breaking at the OH altitude. This case of deep mountain wave propagation demonstrates the potential for strong responses in the mesosphere arising from a small source under suitable propagation conditions and suggests that such cases may be more common than previously believed. © 2016. In this paper, we develop an estimator for the vertical flux of horizontal momentum with arbitrary beam pointing, applicable to the case of arbitrary but fixed beam pointing with systems such as the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR). This method uses information from all available beams to resolve the variances of the wind field in addition to the vertical flux of both meridional and zonal momentum, targeted for high-frequency wave motions. The estimator utilises the full covariance of the distributed measurements, which provides a significant reduction in errors over the direct extension of previously developed techniques and allows for the calculation of an error covariance matrix of the estimated quantities. We find that for the PFISR experiment, we can construct an unbiased and robust estimator of the momentum flux if sufficient and proper beam orientations are chosen, which can in the future be optimized for the expected frequency distribution of momentum-containing scales. However, there is a potential trade-off between biases and standard errors introduced with the new approach, which must be taken into account when assessing the momentum fluxes. We apply the estimator to PFISR measurements on 23 April 2008 and 21 December 2007, from 60–85 km altitude, and show expected results as compared to mean winds and in relation to the measured vertical velocity variances.

On 1 October 2005, during the SpreadFEx campaign, a distinct mesospheric bore was observed over São João do Cariri (7.4° S, 36.5° W), Brazil by using airglow all-sky imagers. The event appeared both in the OI5577 and OH emissions, forming a well extended wave front which was followed by short waves from behind. Simultaneous wind and temperature data obtained by the meteor radar and the TIMED/SABER satellite instrument revealed that the bore event occurred during the Doppler ducting condition in the emission layers.

Planetary waves with periods between two and four days in the middle atmosphere over Antarctica are characterized using one year of data from the medium-frequency spaced antenna (MFSA) radars at Scott Base, Rothera, and Davis. In order to investigate the origin of the observed waves, the ground-based data are complemented by temperature measurements from the Earth Observing System Microwave Limb Sounder (EOS MLS) instrument on the Aura satellite as well as wind velocity data from the United Kingdom Met. Office (UKMO) stratospheric assimilation. Observed characteristics of waves with a period of approximately two days in summer are consistent with the quasi-two-day wave (QTDW) generally found after the summer solstice at low- and mid-latitudes. The Scott Base observations of the QTDW presented here are the highest-latitude ground-based observations of this wave to date. Waves with preferred periods of two and four days occur in bursts throughout the winter with maximum activity in June, July, and August. The mean of the two- and four-day wave amplitudes is relatively constant, suggesting constant wave forcing. When several waves with different periods occur at the same time, they often have similar phase velocities, supporting suggestions that they are quasi-non-dispersive. In 2005, a “warmpool” lasts from late July to late August. An alternative interpretation of this phenomenon is the presence of a structure propagating with the background wind. Consideration of the role of vertical shear (baroclinic instabilities) and horizontal shear (barotropic instabilities) of the zonal wind suggests that instabilities are likely to play a role in the forcing of the two- and four-day waves, which are near-resonant modes and thus supported by the atmosphere.

As part of the MaCWAVE (Mountain and Convective Waves Ascending Vertically) winter campaign an all-sky monochromatic CCD imager has been used to investigate the properties of short-period mesospheric gravity waves at high northern latitudes. Sequential measurements of several nightglow emissions were made from Esrange, Sweden, during a limited period from 27–31 January 2003. Coincident wind measurements over the altitude range (~80–100 km) using two meteor radar systems located at Esrange and Andenes have been used to perform a novel investigation of the intrinsic properties of five distinct wave events observed during this period. Additional lidar and MSIS model temperature data have been used to investigate their nature (i.e. freely propagating or ducted). Four of these extensive wave events were found to be freely propagating with potential source regions to the north of Scandinavia. No evidence was found for strong orographic forcing by short-period waves in the airglow emission layers. The fifth event was most unusual exhibiting an extensive, but much smaller and variable wavelength pattern that appeared to be embedded in the background wind field. Coincident wind measurements indicated the presence of a strong shear suggesting this event was probably due to a large-scale Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.

Images of mesospheric airglow and radar-wind measurements have been combined to estimate the difference in the vertical flux of horizontal momentum carried by high-frequency gravity waves over two dissimilar Antarctic stations. Rothera (67° S, 68° W) is situated in the mountains of the Peninsula near the edge of the wintertime polar vortex. In contrast, Halley (76° S, 27° W), some 1658 km to the southeast, is located on an ice sheet at the edge of the Antarctic Plateau and deep within the polar vortex during winter. The cross-correlation coefficients between the vertical and horizontal wind perturbations were calculated from sodium (Na) airglow imager data collected during the austral winter seasons of 2002 and 2003 at Rothera for comparison with the 2000 and 2001 results from Halley reported previously (Espy et al., 2004). These cross-correlation coefficients were combined with wind-velocity variances from coincident radar measurements to estimate the daily averaged upper-limit of the vertical flux of horizontal momentum due to gravity waves near the peak emission altitude of the Na nightglow layer, 90km. The resulting momentum flux at both stations displayed a large day-to-day variability and showed a marked seasonal rotation from the northwest to the southwest throughout the winter. However, the magnitude of the flux at Rothera was about 4 times larger than that at Halley, suggesting that the differences in the gravity-wave source functions and filtering by the underlying winds at the two stations create significant regional differences in wave forcing on the scale of the station separation.

The semidiurnal tide (SDT) is investigated through comparative analysis of horizontal winds measured at Poker Flat (65°N, 147°W), Andenes (69°N, 16°E), Davis (69°S, 78°E), and Rothera (68°S, 69°W). At the northern hemisphere sites the SDT maximizes around the autumn equinox. Poker Flat and Andenes results from 1999–2001 are used to demonstrate that there is a clear repeatable enhancement in SDT amplitudes around the autumn equinox, and that the maximum is localized in height around 86 km . In the southern hemisphere seasonal dependence of the SDT during 1997–1998 is more complicated, and the autumn enhancement is less pronounced. Many competing mechanisms might contribute to the observed seasonal dependence of the SDT, but this study focuses on the refractive effects of shears in the mean zonal wind and gradients in temperature. The main evidence for a refractive influence is that the seasonal enhancement in the SDT amplitude is accompanied by a dramatic shortening in the wave's vertical scale. This shortening of the vertical scale is consistent with refraction of the SDT energy into the horizontal wind component. Simplified linear tidal theory equations are used to estimate the expected magnitude of the refractive effects using wind and temperature fields observed over Andenes, Norway. The predicted refractive effects are shown to be potentially significant and qualitatively consistent with the observations. In addition to a seasonal dependence, the SDT amplitudes obtained at all the radar sites exhibit a deep amplitude modulation on a time scale characteristic of planetary waves. This sort of modulation has most often been attributed to nonlinear interactions between the tides and planetary waves. We suggest that refraction might instead produce, or at least contribute to, the observed modulation. Although the planetary waves are of weak ( m s −1 ) amplitude, the SDT (particularly the gravest S(2,2) mode) is only marginally propagating at high latitudes. Thus, small perturbations to the background are enough to periodically inhibit propagation of the SDT to higher levels.

In an earlier study based upon medium frequency radar (MFR) data from Saskatoon (52°N) the variability of time-sequences of gravity wave (GW) variances was linked to tidal (12,24 h ) and planetary wave (2 d ) oscillations of the wind. Fifty days of data were chosen from each of winter, spring and autumn seasons for this most comprehensive assessment of wave interactions. While modulations of the GW variances were observed, the results indicated considerable intermittency in the strength and direction of waves from the GW sources. Here we extend the study to other sites in the MLT-MFR (mesosphere, lower-thermosphere) network, and focus upon the planetary waves (PWs) and their modulating influences upon the GW variances. The PW events include the 2 d waves as seen at Saskatoon, London, Hawaii and Christmas Island during the summer of 1994; and 16 d wave activity evidenced at Saskatoon and London throughout 1994, and also during 12 and 7 years of observations, respectively. The modulations of the sequences of GW variances (10– 100/150 min , 2– 6 h periods) are significant, and the phase-differences between the PW (2 d ,16 d ) oscillations in the time-sequences of the winds and of the GW variances allow the propagation directions for the GW fluxes to be inferred. These are eastward in summer months and westward in winter at MLT (60– 90 km ) altitudes.

We present an initial survey in the southern sky of the sporadic meteoroid orbital environment obtained with the Southern Argentina Agile MEteor Radar (SAAMER) Orbital System (OS), in which over three-quarters of a million orbits of dust particles were determined from 2012 January through 2015 April. SAAMER-OS is located at the southernmost tip of Argentina and is currently the only operational radar with orbit determination capability providing continuous observations of the southern hemisphere. Distributions of the observed meteoroid speed, radiant, and heliocentric orbital parameters are presented, as well as those corrected by the observational biases associated with the SAAMER-OS operating parameters. The results are compared with those reported by three previous surveys performed with the Harvard Radio Meteor Project, the Advanced Meteor Orbit Radar, and the Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar, and they are in agreement with these previous studies. Weighted distributions for meteoroids above the thresholds for meteor trail electron line density, meteoroid mass, and meteoroid kinetic energy are also considered. Finally, the minimum line density and kinetic energy weighting factors are found to be very suitable for meteroid applications. It has become increasingly clear that Gravity Waves (GW) have an essential and often dominant role in the dynamics of the Middle Atmosphere. This leads to them having strong impacts upon the thermal structure and the distribution of atmospheric constituents. However, the radar observations of GW have been limited in their latitudinal extent during the past decade, and although satellite observations are now significantly contributing, global-seasonal climatologies of important characteristics are still inadequate. With regard to models, the inclusion of GW-drag effects has been problematic. Usually no seasonal or latitudinal variation in the subgrid-scale GW-drag parameterization scheme is included, and varieties of parameterization schemes have been used. Although these often make conflicting assumptions, they generally produce similarly acceptable end-products, e.g. zonal-mean zonal wind fields. In this paper, we report upon the beginnings of a substantial program, using observations from a network of MF radars (North America, Pacific and Europe), and data from the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (CMAM). This model allows the tidal and planetary wave fields to be assessed, characteristics and climatologies of which are well known from the MF Radars. Here we focus upon the tides. There are useful similarities in the observed and modeled background wind and wave fields, and strong indications that the two non-orographic GW-drag parameterization schemes (Hines; Medvedev–Klaassen) have significant and differing effects upon the dynamics of the modeled atmosphere. It is shown that this comparison process is valuable in the evaluation, and potentially the optimization, of parameterization schemes.

During the summer of 1995, two MF radars located at Hawaii and Puerto Rico were in operation to measure mesospheric motions. We use the data obtained at the two sites to study the longitudinal variability of mean winds, planetary waves, and tides. On average the winds at Puerto Rico were more westward and equatorward than those at Hawaii. Quasi 2-day planetary wave activity was evident most of the time from June 28 to July 25. The quasi 2-day wave had a zonal wave number (m) of 3 during one occasion and 4 during another, and the periods of the two planetary waves were 56 and 48 hours, respectively. The diurnal tide at Puerto Rico was stronger than that at Hawaii above 86 km, and the semidiurnal tide at Hawaii was strongly damped in the altitude range of 90–98 km. Both the semidiurnal and the diurnal tides were apparently modulated by longer-period waves, which was perhaps the most important factor in accounting for their large spatial and temporal variability. The phase difference at the two sites deviates considerably from the expectation of purely migrating tides.

We discuss the results of direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional (3D) anti-parallel vortex pairs evolving in ambient stratification for a range of Reynolds ( Re ) and Froude ( Fr ) numbers. These results have relevance to both the study of aircraft trailing vortices, which can pose considerable hazard to following aircraft (see, e.g., Olsen et al. 1971), and the general topic of vortex reconnection, an important process in fully-developed turbulence and other complex flows (see, e.g., Rogers & Moin 1988, Melander & Hussain 1988).

Long-term MF radar wind measurements in the 80–100 km height range made at three equatorial and subtropical sites (Adelaide, Christmas Island, and Kauai) are used to produce climatologies and to study interannual variability of solar tides. Twelve years of data were available for Adelaide and up to 6 years at the other sites and are analyzed in 30-day intervals. The climatological values are compared with the Global Scale Wave Model (GSWM). Good agreement between the measured and model amplitudes and phases is found for the diurnal tide, but the semidiurnal model values agree less well with the observations. The diurnal tidal amplitudes and phases show strong seasonal variability. Maximum amplitudes are attained in March, and subsidiary maxima are observed in July/August and October, while the phase shows an annual cycle at Adelaide and Kauai, with the phase advancing by ∼4–6 hours from summer to winter. Amplitudes of the semidiurnal tide rarely exceed 10 m s−1. The phases undergo rapid shifts around the equinoxes at Adelaide and Kauai, but there is a more complicated phase variation at Christmas Island. The diurnal tide shows strong interannual variability in amplitude, especially near the March equinox. There appears to be an association with the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in zonal winds in the equatorial stratosphere, with the amplitudes being larger than the climatological average in years when the stratospheric winds are eastward and smaller than average when the QBO is in its westward phase. In contrast, the phase of the diurnal tide, as well as the semidiurnal tide, shows little systematic interannual variability.

MF and meteor radar data from four equatorial and subtropical sites (Hawaii, Christmas Island, Jakarta, and Adelaide) are used to examine diurnal tide amplitude and phase variability at mesosphere and lower thermosphere altitudes. All sites exhibit significant seasonal variability, with the largest amplitude fluctuations occurring at Hawaii and Adelaide. Shorter-term variability is found to occur primarily on timescales of ∼5 to 30 days. Amplitude and phase fluctuations are well correlated among different sites on occasion, but in general, the amplitude and phase coherences are low and suggest significant local influences on the tidal structures. The temporal behavior of height variations of the diurnal tide amplitude and phase is also examined. Cross correlations and cross spectra of these tidal parameters, especially between the amplitude and phase, are examined closely. The tendency for phase maxima to lead amplitude maxima is consistent with tidal modulation of gravity wave propagation and momentum fluxes, with a corresponding feedback by the gravity wave momentum flux divergences on the observed tidal structures. These results substantially extend previous more limited studies of gravity wave/tidal interactions and provide a statistical basis for the possible importance of this interaction and its influences on the diurnal tidal structure.

A multi-instrument global campaign involving incoherent scatter, medium frequency, and meteor wind radars was conducted during the period of January 20–30, 1993, to study the dynamics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Data obtained from 15 radar stations covering a wide latitude range have been used to determine the global distribution of planetary and tidal waves during this 10-day campaign. Spectral analysis of the neutral winds measured by the radars in the altitude range from 80 to 130 km indicates the existence of a strong 48-hour wave near 90 km at latitudes between 40°N and 40°S that is present up to 108 km at 18°N. The semidiurnal tide is large at middle and high latitudes near 90 km and is predominant above 110 km, while the diurnal tide is observed to be particularly important in the upper mesosphere near 40° latitude. A least squares fit to the radar data is performed to obtain the amplitudes and phases of the tidal and 48-hour waves. Comparison with National Center for Atmospheric Research thermosphere-ionosphere-mesosphere general circulation model shows that the predictions from the model agree reasonably well with the observed global morphology of tidal wave amplitudes.

The relationship between quasi 2-day (QTD) oscillations in the neutral wind near 90 km altitude, and in the critical plasma frequency (f o F 2 ) of the ionospheric F region, is investigated for the June-September 1992 period. Wind data are analyzed from MF radar stations at Christmas Island (1.9°N, 202.7°E), Hawaii (20.8°N, 203.5°E), and Saskatoon (52.1°N, 253.4°E) with emphasis on characterizing temporal evolutions of the amplitude and period of the QTD oscillation; four identifiable events are found, one each in the months of June, July, August, and September. Evidence for corresponding ±0.5-1.0 MHz QTD oscillations in f o F 2 is found in data from about half of the 24 ionosonde stations examined. Identification of such concurrent occurrences is complicated by the lack of consistency between QTD burst characteristics between station locations (for both wind and f o F 2 ) and between the meridional and zonal components of the QTD wind variations. These differences are probably due to the sensitivity of the QTD wind oscillation to the background wind structure, which contains latitude and longitude dependences. Evidence is presented for a zonal wavenumber one (s = 1) longitude dependence for the middle-latitude f o F 2 oscillation, which contradicts the expected s = 3 dependence of the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) neutral winds, but which is consistent with the first type of QTD oscillation in f o F 2 at middle latitudes described by Apostolov et al. [1995]. The data presented here are not able to shed light on which of several potential mechanisms lead to the QTD oscillation in f o F 2 .

This paper presents comparisons between wind measurements in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere by medium-frequency (MF) radars and by the high-resolution Doppler imager onboard the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). Because of distinctive observational patterns, time and space averaging, and data processing algorithms, satellites and radars observe the atmosphere from their own perspectives. Because thermal tides are an important part of dynamics in these regions of the atmosphere, tidal determinations from both techniques were given particular attention. Differences and similarities of the two methods are discussed and analyzed.

Horizontal wind fields in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere are obtained with the high resolution Doppler imager (HRDI) on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) by observing the Doppler shifts of emission lines in the O2 atmospheric band. The validity of the derived winds depends on an accurate knowledge of the positions on the detector of the observed lines in the absence of a wind-induced Doppler shift. Relative changes in these positions are readily identified in the routine measurements of onboard calibration lines. The determination of the absolute values relies on the comparison of HRDI observations with those obtained by MF radars and rockets. In addition, the degrees of horizontal and vertical smoothing of the recovered wind profiles have been optimized by examining the effects of these parameters both on the amplitude of the HRDI-derived diurnal tidal amplitude and on the variance of the wind differences with correlative measurements. This paper describes these validation procedures and presents comparisons with correlative data. The main discrepancy appears to be in the relative magnitudes measured by HRDI and by the MF radar technique. Specifically, HRDI generally observes larger winds than the MF radars, but the size of the discrepancy varies significantly between different stations. HRDI wind magnitudes are found to be somewhat more consistent with measurements obtained by the rocket launched falling sphere technique and are in very good agreement with the wind imaging interferometer (WINDII), also flown on UARS.

We present in this manuscript a 4 year survey of meteor shower radiants utilizing the Southern Argentina Agile Meteor Radar (SAAMER). SAAMER, which operates at the southern most region of South America, is a new generation SKiYMET system designed with significant differences from typical meteor radars including high transmitted power and an 8-antenna transmitting array enabling large detected rates at low zenith angles. We applied the statistical methodology developed by Jones and Jones (Jones, J., Jones, W. [2006]. Month. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 367, 1050-1056) to the data collected each day and compiled the results into 1 composite representative year at 1 resolution in Solar Longitude. We then search for enhancements in the activity which last for at least 3 days and evolve temporally as is expected from a meteor shower. Using this methodology, we have identified in our data 32 shower radiants, two of which were not part of the IAU commission 22 meteor shower working list. Recently, SAAMER's capabilities were enhanced by adding two remote stations to receive meteor forward scatter signals from meteor trails and thus enable the determination of meteoroid orbital parameters. SAAMER started recording orbits in January 2012 and future surveys will focus on the search for unknown meteor streams, in particular in the southern ecliptic sky., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

Measurement capabilities of five meteor radars are assessed and compared to determine how well radars having different transmitted power and antenna configurations perform in defining mean winds, tidal amplitudes, and gravity wave (GW) momentum fluxes. The five radars include two new-generation meteor radars on Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (53.8 deg S) and on King George Island in the Antarctic (62.1 deg S) and conventional meteor radars at Socorro, New Mexico (34.1 deg N, 106.9 deg W), Bear Lake Observatory, Utah (approx 41.9 deg N, 111.4 deg W), and Yellowknife, Canada (62.5 deg N, 114.3 deg W). Our assessment employs observed meteor distributions for June of 2009, 2010, or 2011 for each radar and a set of seven test motion fields including various superpositions of mean winds, constant diurnal tides, constant and variable semidiurnal tides, and superposed GWs having various amplitudes, scales, periods, directions of propagation, momentum fluxes, and intermittencies. Radars having higher power and/or antenna patterns yielding higher meteor counts at small zenith angles perform well in defining monthly and daily mean winds, tidal amplitudes, and GW momentum fluxes, though with expected larger uncertainties in the daily estimates. Conventional radars having lower power and a single transmitting antenna are able to describe monthly mean winds and tidal amplitudes reasonably well, especially at altitudes having the highest meteor counts. They also provide qualitative estimates of GW momentum fluxes at the altitudes having the highest meteor counts; however, these estimates are subject to uncertainties of approx 20 to 50% and uncertainties rapidly become excessive at higher and lower altitudes. Estimates of all quantities degrade somewhat for more complex motion fields.

Research performed under this AFOSR contract targeted anticipated neutral atmosphere influences on the seeding, character, and statistics of equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs). We employed several approaches, including 1) a large measurement program in Brazil, 2) analyses of correlative satellite data, and 3) numerical modeling of gravity wave dynamics that we expect to have significant influences on plasma dynamics in the ionosphere. Our SpreadFEx-2 field program focused on the onset of the EPB season, October to December of 2009, 2010, and 2011 and employed much enhanced instrumentation compared to our 2005 SpreadFEx measurements. Enhancements included 1) FPIs measuring F-layer winds in Brazil, 2) 6300 imagers enabling tomography of EPB structures, and 3) CERTO beacon receivers for correlative studies with the C/NOFS satellite. The FPIs and imagers demonstrated the relative motions between neutral winds and EPBs to be a function of time and likely altitude. CHAMP data revealed the nature of the migrating tides at 400 km. their variations with season and the solar cycle, and the seasonal variations in gravity wave responses at 300 km during 2010. Numerical studies of gravity waves addressed instability dynamics and penetration from specific sources that we expect to be especially important in the ionosphere.

Two meteor radars with enhanced power and sensitivity and located at closely conjugate latitudes (54.6degN and 53.8degS) are employed for inter-hemispheric comparisons of mean winds and planetary wave structures. Our study uses data from June 2008 through May 2010 during which both radars provided nearly continuous wind measurements from approx.80 to 100 km. Monthly mean winds at 53.8degS exhibit a somewhat stronger westward mean zonal jet in spring and early summer at lower altitudes and no westward monthly mean winds at higher altitudes. In contrast, westward mean winds of approx.5-10 m/s at 54.6degN extend to above 96 km during late winter and early spring each year. Equatorward monthly mean winds extend approximately from spring to fall equinox at both latitudes, with amplitudes of approx.5-10 m/s and more rapid decreases in amplitude at 54.6degN at higher altitudes. Meridional mean winds are more variable at both latitudes during fall and winter, with both poleward and equatorward monthly means indicating longer-period variability. Planetary waves seen in the 2-day mean data are episodic and variable at both sites, exhibit dominant periodicities of approx.8-10 and 16-20 days and are more confined to late fall and winter at 54.6degN. At both latitudes, planetary waves in the two period bands coincide closely in time and exhibit similar horizontal velocity covariances that are positive (negative) at 54.6degN (53.8degS) during peak planetary wave responses.

[1] A new generation meteor radar was installed at the Brazilian Antarctic Comandante Ferraz Base (62.1°S) in March 2010. This paper describes the motivations for the radar location, its measurement capabilities, and comparisons of measured mean winds, tides, and gravity wave momentum fluxes from April to June of 2010 and 2011 with those by a similar radar on Tierra del Fuego (53.8°S). Motivations for the radars include the “hotspot” of small-scale gravity wave activity extending from the troposphere into the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) centered over the Drake Passage, the maximum of the semidiurnal tide at these latitudes, and the lack of other MLT wind measurements in this latitude band. Mean winds are seen to be strongly modulated at planetary wave and longer periods and to exhibit strong coherence over the two radars at shorter time scales as well as systematic seasonal variations. The semidiurnal tide contributes most to the large-scale winds over both radars, with maximum tidal amplitudes during May and maxima at the highest altitudes varying from ∼20 to >70 ms−1. In contrast, the diurnal tide and various planetary waves achieve maximum winds of ∼10 to 20 ms−1. Monthly mean gravity wave momentum fluxes appear to reflect the occurrence of significant sources at lower altitudes, with relatively small zonal fluxes over both radars, but with significant, and opposite, meridional momentum fluxes below ∼85 km. These suggest gravity waves propagating away from the Drake Passage at both sites, and may indicate an important source region accounting in part for this “hotspot.”

[1] Mean winds, semidiurnal and diurnal tides, and trends and long-period oscillations spanning a solar cycle (from early 1999 through June 2010) measured by medium frequency (MF) radars at conjugate Antarctic and Arctic latitudes (Syowa, Antarctica, 69°S, 39.6°E, and Andenes, Norway, 69.3°N, 16°E) are described and compared. Zonal mean winds are stronger and more uniform from year to year over the Antarctic, with a stronger eastward winter jet spanning the range of altitudes presented (70 to 96 km). The summer westward jet is also stronger and maximizes at higher altitudes over the Antarctic than over the Arctic. The eastward winter jet over the Arctic, while generally weaker, exhibits a localized maximum in late winter at ∼2 to 3 year intervals. Meridional mean winds likewise achieve somewhat stronger maxima at higher altitudes over the Antarctic than over the Arctic. Semidiurnal tide amplitudes are typically somewhat larger over the Antarctic and similar in the two components, with maxima at ∼85 km or above and narrow responses that tend to cluster from ∼February to May and ∼September to November over the Antarctic and from ∼December to February and ∼June to September over the Arctic. Zonal diurnal tide amplitudes are quite similar between the sites, with maxima extending from ∼70 to 90 km and slightly stronger over the Antarctic. Meridional diurnal amplitudes display more significant growth with altitude, achieve stronger maxima at the highest altitudes presented, and typically exhibit a single and narrow maximum during December to February over the Antarctic and double maxima from ∼May to September over the Arctic. Also discussed are trends and long-period oscillations over a solar cycle observed in these mean and tidal wind fields.

A mesospheric bore was observed with an all-sky airglow imager on the night of 9–10 July 2007 at Ferraz Station (62° S, 58° W), located on King George island on the Antarctic Peninsula. The observed bore propagated from southwest to northeast with a well defined wave front and a series of crests behind the main front. There was no evidence of dissipation during its propagation within the field of view. The wave parameters were obtained via a 2-D Fourier transform of the imager data providing a horizontal wavelength of 33 km, an observed period of 6 min, and a horizontal phase speed of 92 m s−1. Simultaneous mesospheric winds were measured with a medium frequency (MF) radar at Rothera Station (68° S, 68° W) and temperature profiles were obtained from the SABER instrument on the TIMED satellite. These wind and temperature profiles were used to estimate the propagation environment of the bore. A wavelet technique was applied to the wind in the plane of bore propagation at the OH emission height spanning three days centered on the bore event to define the dominant periodicities. Results revealed a dominance of near-inertial periods, and semi-diurnal and terdiurnal tides suggesting that the ducting structure enabling bore propagation occurred on large spatial scales. The observed tidal motions were used to reconstruct the winds employing a least-squares method, which were then compared to the observed ducting environment. Results suggest an important contribution of large-scale winds to the ducting structure, but with buoyancy frequency variations in the vertical also expected to be important. These results allow us to conclude that the bore was supported by a duct including contributions from both winds and temperature (or stability). A co-located airglow temperature imager operated simultaneously with the all-sky imager confirmed that the bore event was the dominant small-scale wave event during the analysis interval.

The Southern Argentina Agile Meteor Radar (SAAMER) was installed at Rio Grande on Tierra del Fuego (53.8°S, 67.8°W) in May 2008 and has been operational for ∼24 months. This paper describes the motivations for the radar design and its placement at the southern tip of South America, its operating modes and capabilities, and observations of the mean winds, planetary waves, and tides during its first ∼20 months of operation. SAAMER was specifically designed to provide very high resolution of large-scale motions and hopefully enable direct measurements of the vertical momentum flux by gravity waves, which have only been possible previously with dual- or multiple-beam radars and lidars or in situ measurements. SAAMER was placed on Tierra del Fuego because it was a region devoid of similar measurements, the latitude was anticipated to provide high sensitivity to an expected large semidiurnal tide, and the region is now recognized to be a "hot spot" of small-scale gravity wave activity extending from the troposphere into the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, perhaps the most dynamically active location on Earth. SAAMER was also intended to permit simultaneous enhanced meteor studies, including "head echo" and "nonspecular" measurements, which were previously possible only with high-power large-aperture radars. Initial measurements have defined the mean circulation and structure, exhibited planetary waves at various periods, and revealed large semidiurnal tide amplitudes and variability, with maximum amplitudes at higher altitudes often exceeding 60 m s-1 and amplitude modulations at periods from a few to ∼30 days., Universidad Nacional De La Plata

[1] Wind measurements in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere obtained with a medium frequency (MF) radar in Hawaii (22°N, 160°W) spanning ∼16 years are employed to examine the intra-annual and interannual variability of the mean and tidal motions at altitudes between 84 and 94 km. Intra-annual periodicities range from ∼3 to 12 months, with significant coherence in altitude and between the zonal and meridional components of each motion field. Interannual variations confirm the dominant periodicities identified previously at this site and elsewhere, in particular, the significant diurnal, and less significant semidiurnal, tidal responses at periods of ∼28 and ∼48 months. Amplitudes of these long-period oscillations of the diurnal tide increase with altitude below 92 km and are larger than the amplitudes of the 12 month oscillations above ∼90 km. Phases of the ∼28 and ∼48 month oscillations show a downward progression with a slightly larger altitude variation in the meridional diurnal tide for the ∼28 month oscillation and a significantly larger altitude variation in the zonal diurnal tide for the ∼48 month oscillation. The long and nearly continuous Hawaii data set also enables characterization of the responses of the wind fields to the 11 year solar cycle. Both wind and tidal fields exhibit this periodicity, but these responses display interesting and different relations to the phase of the solar cycle. The 11 year oscillation of the meridional wind is nearly in phase with the solar cycle, while the 11 year oscillation of the zonal wind is in approximate quadrature with the solar cycle. The 11 year oscillations of the semidiurnal tidal amplitudes and the meridional diurnal amplitude are all in approximate quadrature with the solar cycle (with the tidal amplitudes leading by ∼29 to 37 months), while the 11 year oscillation of the zonal diurnal amplitude is somewhat nearer an antiphase than a quadrature relation to the solar cycle (leading by ∼54 months).

[1] The TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI) on the NASA Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite has been measuring horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) since 2002. Because of the high inclination of the TIMED orbit, TIDI measures the horizontal winds from pole to pole every orbit. This paper presents the first assessment of the spatial structure and temporal evolution of the nonmigrating semidiurnal tides over the Arctic determined from the TIDI wind measurements and a comparison of the structure of the nonmigrating semidiurnal tide between the Arctic and Antarctic. The nonmigrating semidiurnal tides were determined as a 60 day average based on the yaw cycles of the spacecraft. The nonmigrating semidiurnal tidal wind field over the Arctic comprises mainly the westward‐propagating zonal wave numbers1(W1)and3(W3)andstandingzonalwavenumber0(S0)modes.TheW1modeis the most prominent, maximizing above 90 km poleward of 60°N during the yaw interval ranging from mid‐March to mid‐May. While this mode exhibits a slight amplitude increase toward the North Pole during this interval, its phase is nearly constant with latitude. The S0 mode is enhanced over two yaw intervals ranging from mid‐January to mid‐May, but its amplitude decreases toward the North Pole. Compared to the W1 semidiurnal tide over the Antarctic, that over the Arctic is smaller in amplitude, of less extended duration, achieves maximum amplitudes at higher altitudes by ∼10 km, and exhibits a weaker amplitude increase toward the pole. These differences likely result from differences in excitation mechanisms and efficiency and/or in propagation conditions in the two responses for the nonmigrating semidiurnal tides between the Arctic and Antarctic.

[1] Bottom-type spread F events were observed in the south American equatorial region by a VHF coherent radar and an ionosonde at Sao Luis (2.5°S, 44.3°W), an ionosonde at Fortaleza (3.9°S, 38.4° W) and an airglow OI 630.0 nm imager at Cariri (7.4°S, 36.5°W) and Brasilia (14.8°S, 47.6°W). In the evening of September 30, 2005, a long duration (∼70 minutes) bottom side scattering layer, confined in a narrow height region, was observed. At the same time all-sky imager observed sinusoidal intensity depletions in the zonal plane extending more than 1500 km and elongated along the magnetic meridian. No strong spread F structures developed during the period. Subsequently well developed plasma bubbles were observed. This suggests that the observed bottom-type spread F is an initial phase of the plasma bubbles. We report, for the first time, longitudinal and latitudinal extension of the bottom-type spread F as diagnosed by optical imagers.

[1] We analyzed Mars Odyssey (ODY) and Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) accelerometer density retrievals in narrow local-time (LT) bands during their respective aerobraking phases to study the large-scale longitudinal density variations in the Martian upper atmosphere. The ODY data and three seasons of MGS data (fall, winter, and spring) all displayed large zonal variations in density (especially wave-2 and 3) with little vertical phase variation, consistent with previous studies using MGS aerobraking data. The large-scale density structures were most likely nonmigrating tides sampled at specific LTs. The wave-2 modes observed in the ODY and MGS data were approximately out of phase, and their respective LT samplings were approximately 12 hours apart. This reinforces the conclusion from previous studies that this mode is most likely an eastward-propagating diurnal Kelvin wave of zonal wave-1, which is produced by the interaction of the diurnal thermal forcing and the wave-2 component of the Martian topography. We also note a close association of enhanced gravity wave variances with the strong longitudinal variations in the large-scale densities, suggesting the possibility of tidal filtering of the gravity wave (GW) field.

[1] A function that approximates atmospheric tidal behavior in the polar regions is described. This function is fitted to multistation radar measurements of wind in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere with the aim of obtaining a latitude-longitude-height description of the variation of tides over the whole Antarctic continent. Archival wind data sets are combined with present-day ones to fill the spatial distribution of the observations and to reduce the potential effects of spatial aliasing. Multiple years are combined through the compilation of monthly station composite days, yielding results for each month of the year. Despite potential problems associated with year-to-year variations in the tidal phase, a useful climatology of Antarctic zonal and meridional tidal wind components is compiled. The results of the fits reproduce the major features of the high-latitude tidal wind field: the dominance of the semidiurnal migrating mode in the winter months and the presence of a semidiurnal zonal wave number one component in the summer months. It is also found that the summer semidiurnal tide contains a zonal wave number zero component.

[1] Vertical coupling in the low-latitude atmosphere-ionosphere system driven by the 2-day wave in the tropical MLT region has been investigated. The problem is studied from an observational point of view. Three different types of data were analyzed in order to detect and extract the 2-day wave signals. The 2-day wave event during the period from 1 December 2002 to 28 February 2003 was identified in the neutral winds by radar measurements located at four tropical stations. The 2-day variations in the ionospheric electric currents (registered by perturbations in the geomagnetic field) and in the F-region electron densities were detected in the data from 23 magnetometer and seven ionosonde stations situated at low latitudes. Two features for each kind of wave were investigated in detail: the variation with time of the wave amplitude and the zonal wave number. The results show that the westward propagating global 2-day wave with zonal wave number 2 seen in the ionospheric currents and in F-region plasma is forced by the simultaneous 2-day wave activity in the MLT region. The main forcing agent in this atmosphere-ionosphere coupling seems to be the modulated tides, particularly the semidiurnal tide. This tide has a larger vertical wavelength than the diurnal tide and propagates well into the thermosphere. The parameter that appears to be affected, and thus drives the observed 2-day wave response of the ionosphere, is the dynamo electric field.

Following earlier comparisons using the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (CMAM, without interactive chemistry), the dynamical characteristics of the model are assessed with interactive chemistry activated. Time-sequences of temperatures and winds at Tromsø (70° N) show that the model has more frequent and earlier stratospheric winter warmings than typically observed. Wavelets at mesospheric heights (76, 85 km) and from equator to polar regions show that CMAM tides are generally larger, but planetary waves (PW) smaller, than medium frequency (MF) radar-derived values. Tides modelled for eight geographic locations during the four seasons are not strikingly different from the earlier CMAM experiment; although monthly data now allow these detailed seasonal variations (local combinations of migrating and non-migrating components) within the mesosphere (circa 50–80 km) to be demonstrated for the first time. The dominant semi-diurnal tide of middle latitudes is, as in the earlier papers, quite well realized in CMAM. Regarding the diurnal tide, it is shown here and in an earlier study by one of the authors, that the main characteristics of the diurnal tide at low latitudes (where the S (1,1) mode dominates) are well captured by the model. However, in this experiment there are some other unobserved features for the diurnal tide, which are quite similar to those noted in the earlier CMAM experiment: low latitude amplitudes are larger than observed at 82 km, and middle latitudes feature an unobserved low altitude (73 km) summer maximum. Phases, especially at low and middle (circa 42° N) latitudes, do not match observations well. Mesospheric seasonal tidal variations available from the CUJO (Canada U.S. Japan Opportunity) radar (MFR) network (sites 40–45° N) reveal interesting longitudinal differences between the CMAM and the MFR observations. In addition, model and observations differ in the character of the vertical phase variations at each network-location. Finally, the seasonal variations of planetary wave (PW) activity available from CMAM and the MFR show quite good agreement, apart from the amplitude differences (smaller in CMAM above 70 km). A major difference for the 16-d PW is that CMAM shows large amplitudes before the winter solstice; and for the 2-d PW, while both CMAM and MFR show summer and winter activity, the observed summer mesopause and winter mesospheric wave activities are stronger and more extended in height. Models such as CMAM, operated without data-assimilation, are now able to provide increasingly realistic climatologies of middle atmosphere tides and PW activity. Differences do exist however, and so discussion of the various factors affecting tidal and PW characteristics in atmospheres, modelled and observed, is provided. Other diagnostics of model-characteristics and of future desirable model experiments are suggested.

The winter MaCWAVE (Mountain and convective waves ascending vertically) rocket campaign took place in January 2003 at Esrange, Sweden and the ALOMAR observatory in Andenes, Norway. The campaign combined balloon, lidar, radar, and rocket measurements to produce full temperature and wind profiles from the ground to 105 km. This paper will investigate gravity wave propagation in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere using data from the Weber sodium lidar on 28–29 January 2003. A very large semidiurnal tide was present in the zonal wind above 80 km that grew to a 90 m/s amplitude at 100 km. The superposition of smaller-scale gravity waves and the tide caused small regions of possible convective or shear instabilities to form along the downward progressing phase fronts of the tide. The gravity waves had periods ranging from the Nyquist period of 30 min up to 4 h, vertical wavelengths ranging from 7 km to more than 20 km, and the frequency spectra had the expected –5/3 slope. The dominant gravity waves had long vertical wavelengths and experienced rapid downward phase progression. The gravity wave variance grew exponentially with height up from 86 to 94 km, consistent with the measured scale height, suggesting that the waves were not dissipated strongly by the tidal gradients and resulting unstable regions in this altitude range.

[1] Observations with a meteor radar, two medium-frequency (MF) radars, and a sodium lidar at ALOMAR at Andenes, Norway (69.3°N, 16.0°E) were used to derive tidal winds and temperatures at altitudes from 72 km to 94 km for a period from June 15 to July 15 during the MaCWAVE/MIDAS summer rocket program in 2002. The longitudinal variations of tidal winds were examined including MF radar winds obtained at Poker Flat, Alaska (65.1°N, 147.5°W). Results show continuity in tidal assessments among the instruments at Andenes, large variability in tidal amplitudes in time and longitude, and an expected phase relationship between winds and temperatures despite the amplitude variability.

[1] Simultaneous iron resonance lidar density profiles, OH intensity images and MF-radar wind measurements have been used to determine the horizontal and vertical components of high-frequency (

International audience; A medium frequency spaced-antenna radar has been operating at Rothera station, Antarctica (67° S, 68° W) for two periods, between 1997-1998 and since 2002, measuring winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. In this paper monthly mean winds are derived and presented along with three years of radiosonde balloon data for comparison with the HWM-93 model atmosphere and other high latitude southern hemisphere sites. The observed meridional winds are slightly more northwards than those predicted by the model above 80 km in the winter months and below 80 km in summer. In addition, the altitude of the summer time zero crossing of the zonal winds above the westward jet is overestimated by the model by up to 8 km. These data are then merged with the wind climatology obtained from falling sphere measurements made during the PORTA campaign at Rothera in early 1998 and the HWM-93 model atmosphere to generate a complete zonal wind climatology between 0 and 100 km as a benchmark for future studies at Rothera. A westwards (eastwards) maximum of 44 ms-1 at 67 km altitude occurs in mid December (62 ms-1 at 37 km in mid July). The 0 ms-1 wind contour reaches a maximum altitude of 90 km in mid November and a minimum altitude of 18 km in January extending into mid March at 75 km and early October at 76 km.

[1] Wind measurements from a series of atmospheric radars located around Antarctica have been used to characterize the mesospheric planetary-wave field during the winter of 2002. Combining winds from the medium-frequency (MF) radar at Rothera (68°S, 68°W) and the SuperDARN high-frequency meteor-wind radars at Halley (76°S, 27°W), Sanae (72°S, 3°W) and Syowa (69°S, 40°E) stations, we have been able to measure the period, wavenumber and propagation direction of the most prominent planetary waves. The results show that the planetary-wave field before the unusual stratospheric warming in 2002 was dominated by a very long-period (τ ≈ 43 days), westward and upward-propagating zonal planetary wavenumber 1. However, after the stratospheric warming events began in late winter, the character of the wave field changed and a shorter period (τ ≈ 14 days), westward, zonal wavenumber 1 became established. It would appear that the previously reported oscillations of the mesospheric hydroxyl airglow temperatures at Rothera and Halley, which were strongly anti-correlated to the meridional wind, were the result of these planetary waves.

[1] Combining data taken during the MaCWAVE summer rocket campaign at the Andoya Rocket Range (69.3°N, 16.0°E) with a lidar, radiosondes, falling spheres, and VHF radars at Andoya and at the Esrange, the gravity wave content of the troposphere and stratosphere during the campaign nights was analyzed. The lidar yielded vertical wavelengths and periods of gravity waves in the stratosphere. A Stokes parameter analysis was performed for the radiosonde and falling sphere data to estimate propagation directions of the gravity waves. The wave content in the troposphere was inferred by applying wavelet and cross-spectral methods to the radar data. We found propagation conditions and spectra of the waves to vary with height following the change in the background wind. The waves were excited both at the ground and in the tropopause/lower stratosphere region.

[1] The MaCWAVE/MIDAS rocket campaign occurred at the Andoya Rocket Range (69°N,16°E) on July 1–2 and 4–5, 2002. This paper investigates gravity waves in the mesosphere using falling spheres dropped from rockets and the Weber sodium lidar at the ALOMAR observatory. The vertical displacement of a sodium sporadic layer on July 5 showed great variability at periods from minutes to hours with an observed frequency spectral slope of −1.89. The 2 salvos had similar wave amplitudes at the mesopause, whereas Salvo 2 had stronger amplitudes in the lower atmosphere. The dominant wave period varied strongly with height, possibly due to wave breaking on the strong mean gradients or oblique propagation of wave packets. One long-period wave appeared to propagate vertically from 75–95 km with a reduction of its vertical wavelength consistent with the mean wind gradient, but it is unclear whether it was a single wave or a superposition of waves.

Global change, space weather, and their possible adverse impacts on human activities are not only of scientific interest, but also of great public concern. Since the Arctic middle and upper atmosphere exhibits significant sensitivity to internal and external perturbations, systematic studies at high latitudes have become a scientific priority. Several international research programs are being conducted at the Arctic Light Detection and Ranging Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR), which was established at Andoya, Norway (69°N, 16°E) in 1994 to perform regular Arctic light detection and ranging (lidar) observations in tandem with other radio and optical instrumentation, as well as with in situ rocket and balloon measurements [von Zahn, 1997].

Calculations demonstrating that Internal gravity waves become unstable in the vicinity of critical levels are reported in this paper. An analytic linear inviscid model is used to look at the geometry of these unstable regions using parameters appropriate to the atmosphere. A nonlinear model is used to establish the usefulness of our simple analytic model. It is argued that turbulence should occur in regions of instability that are tens to hundreds of meters thick in the vertical. It is shown, in a fluid with a sufficiently large kinematic viscosity, that turbulence should no longer occur near critical levels. This condition indicates that turbulence will no longer be produced at critical levels above the altitude of the turbopause, about 100 km.
