51. Accurate position determination of particle trajectories using plastic scintillator counters

Abstract: Using the CDF technique for locating charged particles in plastic scintillator counters, it has been found that the accuracy in determining the position of an incident particle in the counter is essentially a function of the distance between the two photomultipliers. Moreover it has been shown that a position resolution of Δx = ±0.15 cm and a time resolution of Δt = ±0.07 nsec can be achieved in a simple way. Finally it has been shown that it is possible to measure simultaneously the coordinates of an incident particle in two orthogonal directions. This would allow to measure particle trajectories in high rate beams, when spark chambers cannot be used.

Abstract: A study of the timelike reaction e+e-→μ∓μ± and of its comparison with the spacelike dominated reaction e+e−→e±e± allows us to establish the validity of QED in terms of production angular distributions, absolute rates, energy dependence and angular correlations between the pair of final-state leptons, in two very different ranges of invariant four-momentum transfer. No sign of QED break is detected in the electromagnetic interaction of leptons and the muon behaves like a heavy electron, within the accuracy of the present investigation.

55. A measurement of the ϕ-meson production cross-section in π−p interactions at 2.13 GeV/c

Abstract: The production of the ϕ-meson in the reaction π− + p → ϕ + n has been studied using scintillation counters. The neutron was detected by a large-acceptance neutron detector and both its time of flight and its emission angle were measured to identify the missing mass. The decay mode ϕ→K+K− was detected using two scintillation counters in a simple coincidence arrangement. The total production cross-section of the ϕ-meson at 2.13 GeV/c turns out to be σ(π− + p → ϕ + n) = (24 ± 8) μb. This result confirms the depression factor, already observed for ϕ production in πN interactions, expected on the basis of the λ-quark spin conservation.

56. A large electromagnetic shower detector with high rejection power against pions

Abstract: A large electromagnetic shower detector for identification and energy measurements of γ-rmrays (between 150 and 1600 MeV) and electrons (between 400 and 1100 MeV), in the presence of high pion background, is described. The detector is based on the principle of simultaneous measurement of the spatial development of the electromagnetic cascade and of its energy release. It consists of 1) two six-gap thin-plate spark chambers for the reconstruction of the incoming particle trajectories; and 2) nine elements, each made of a lead foil, a spark chamber, and a plastic scintillator, all sandwiched together; here the shower development is studied. When used for γ-detection, a 0.5 cm Pb foil is placed in front of the thin-plate spark chambers, in order to allow the detection of the γ-conversion process and the identification of the γ-direction. The dimensions of the detector are 60 x 120 cm 2 front face, and 50 cm depth along the electromagnetic shower development. A pion rejection power of the order 5 x 10 −4 between 400 and 1100 MeV, for electron efficiencies varying from 70% to 80%, is obtained. The pion rejection efficiency in the γ-case is highly improved by the anticoincidence efficiency factor, while the γ-detection efficiency depends on the precision required in the reconstruction of the γ-ray direction. The γ-ray and electron energy resolution is about ±15%.

Abstract: The flux of relativistic leptonic particles with charges ±e/3, ±2e/3, ±4e/3 in cosmic rays underground at 63 m w.e. was measured using a six-scintillation-counter telescope. The following upper limits were established: φ(±e/3)≤1.8·10−10 cm−2sr−1s−1, (90% confidence) φ(±2e/3)≤1.8·10−10 cm−2sr−1s−1, (90% confidence) φ(±4e/3)≤(1.1±1.8)·10−8 cm−2 sr−1 s−1, at threshold energies of (2.1±0.1) GeV, (8.5±0.6) GeV, (22±1) GeV respectively.

Abstract: The branching ratioR=Γ(η→neutrals)/Γ(η→total) has been measured with counter techniques. The η-mesons were produced in the reaction π−+p→ n+MM at 0.8 GeV/c. A total of ∼24 000 η-events have been observed. The value found isR=(70.5±0.8)%. The 90% confidence level for the branching ratioR’=Γ(η→π0γγ)/Γη→→ total is found to beR′≦10%.

Abstract: The observation of 21 K + K − pairs in 38 hadron pair events produced at 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7 GeV total centre-of-mass energies in e + e − annihilations, establishes that time-like photons produce K pairs and π pairs with comparable rates in this energy range. The K-meson electromagnetic form factor at a mean s -value of 2.4 GeV 2 is measured to be | F K | = 0.50±0.08. The number of e + e − pairs observed in the same angular and energy range is 5148.

Abstract: A further search for heavy leptons at the ADONE e+e− storage ring has revealed no events. This establishes, with 95% confidence, that, if a heavy lepton exists and is universally coupled only to ordinary leptons, its mass must be heavier than 1.4 GeV. If it is also coupled to the hadrons, its mass must be greater than 1 GeV, again with 95% confidence.

Abstract: The results of a counter experiment on the branching ratioR=Γ(ω→neutrals)/Γ(ω→total) are presented. The masses of particles produced in the reaction π− + p → n + (missing mass) at 2.12 GeV/c were determined with an uncertainty of ±15 MeV by using counter techniques to measure the time of flight and emission angle of the neutrons. Veto counters around the hydrogen target selected neutral decay modes. The peak values of ω/background were 0.4 for the neutral mode and 0.55 for the total decay. Corrections to the experimental value are discussed. The value of the branching ratio was found to be (8.4±1.5)%. This result is compared with various theoretical predictions.

Abstract: First measurements of the mass and width of the Z0 performed at the newly commissioned LEP Collider by the DELPHI Collaboration are presented. The measuements are derived from the study of multihadronic final states produced in e+e- annihilations at several energies around the Z0 mass. The values found for the mass and width are M(Z0)=91.06±0.09 (stat) ±0.045 (syst.) GeV and Γ(Z0)=2.42±0.21 (stat.) GeV respectively, froma three-parameter fit to the line shape. A two-parameter fit in the framework of the standard model yields for the number of light neutrino species Nν=2.4±0.4 (stat.) ±0.5 (syst.), 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: 49 e+e− non-collinear, non-coplanar events have been observed in a study of 1824 e+e− interactions at total centre-of-mass energies from 1.6 GeV to 2.0 GeV. The inadequacy of the peaking approximation in radiative corrections is measured to be (2.8 ± 0.4)%, in these experimental conditions of observation.

Abstract: The interference structure function xG 3 ( x ) has been measured for the first time scattering positive and negative muons of opposite helicity off a carbon target. The x dependence observed for Q 2 between 40 and 180 (GeV/c 2 ) is in good agreement with predictions of the quark-parton model. The measured ratio 2( a u Q u + a d Q d )/( Q u 2 + Q d 2 = 1.87 ± 0.25 (stat.) ± 0.24 (syst.) is consistent with the hypothesis of fractional quark charges and determines the sign of Q u − Q d to be positive.

Abstract: We report experimental results on the cross section for the reaction e + e − → hadrons as a function of the total c.m. energy in the range W = 1.42–3.09 GeV. The results, combined with those already existing below the charm threshold, clearly indicate a structure for R ( W ) = α ( e + e − → hadrons)/ α ( e + e − → μ + μ − ) in that energy region.

La rejection contre les pions est de 6 x 10-4, l'efficacite de detection des electrons varie de 68 % a 80 % et la resolution en energie de 15 % a 10 % dans la region d'energie de 0,4 GeV a 1,1 GeV.

Abstract: The correlations in rapidity in hadron production from e+e- annihilation near the Z0 resonance were studied by means of the method of factorial moments, using data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP. Abstract: A search has been made for pairs of scalar quarks (squarks) produced in e+e- annihilations at LEP (√s≃MZ0), and decaying into a standard quark and a neutral, non-interacting, stable, massive particle (the lightest supersymmetric particle, LSP). The search has been conducted for differences in the mass of the squark and LSP of 2 GeV/c2 and above. Up squarks with masses below 42 GeV/c2 and down squarks below 43 GeV/c2 were excluded. Six squark flavours degenerate in mass were excluded below 45 GeV/c2., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: The pair production of the lightest scalar Higgs boson, h, and a pseudoscalar Higgs boson, A, was searched for in a data sample containing 10 000 hadronic Z0 decays. The search involved both leptonic and purely hadronic decay channels of each Higgs boson. No signal was found, and limits on the Higgs boson masses, in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, ar reported up to 35 GeV/c2 at 95% CL, for both tan β > 1 and tan β < 1, where tan β is the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs doublets., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: The production rates for 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-jet hadronic final states have been measured with the DELPHI detector at the e+e- storage ring LEP at centre of mass energies around 91.5 GeV. Fully corrected data are compared to O(αs 2) QCD matrix element calculations and the QCD scale parameter ΛMS is determined for different parametrizations of the renormalization scale μ2. Including all uncertainties our result is αs(MZ 2)=0.114±0.003[stat.]±0.004[syst.]±0.012[theor.] ., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: Assessment of “in vitro” tumor growth inhibition and radiobiological effects, such as apoptosis, have been evaluated in human neoplastic cells of different histotypes (H460 lung cancer cells, U87 glioblastoma, LnCaP prostate tumor cells) treated using solutions of 188 Rhenium-perrhenate. The MTT assay, which measures mitochondrial metabolism in the entire cell culture is a recognized test for cytotoxicity and was used in cells exposed 48–72 h to specific activities ranged from 37 to 148 GBq/l. Whereas H460 and LnCaP were particularly sensitive to treatment, U87 glioblastoma cells behaved as radioresistant ones. However, evaluation of 188 Re-induced apoptosis indicated that this kind of cell death contributed only marginally to the reduction in cell viability of H460 and LNCaP lines, suggesting the existence of protective mechanisms against apoptosis. In this respect, the membrane receptor, CD44, whose expression is dysregulated in most malignant cell types has proven to alter the response of cancer cells to apoptotic stimuli, including ionizing radiation. Cell samples decorated with a FITC-labelled CD44 antibody indicated, that in H460 and U87 cells the CD44(+) correlated well with an apoptosis-resistant response. Conversely, LnCap cells proven as CD44(−) did not display however sensitivity to radio-induced apoptosis.

Abstract: 188 Re is a beta and gamma emitter used in metabolic radiotherapy. SCINTIRAD is a multidisciplinary collaboration that aims at determining the radio-response of 188 Re in cells “in vitro” and the biodistribution in different organs of mice “in vivo”, and studying the therapeutic effect on liver and other tumours induced in mice. Several tumour cell lines have been treated “in vitro” with a 188 Re solution. The dosimetry of 188 Re used to target the different lines of cancer cells has been evaluated using GEANT4, and preliminary results are presented. Studies to optimize the imaging of 188 Re “in vivo” have also continued, including the characterization of H8500 Flat Panel PMT and of LaBr 3 crystals, and the development of dedicated electronics.

Abstract: The ECORAD collaboration aims at developing a dual compact camera for acquiring ultrasound and scintigraphic images, in order to get both morphological and functional information on the same device. A final volumetric image containing the fusion information will be provided to the user. Here we present the first simulated results of the scintigraphic camera, achieved by means of the GEANT4 program. The camera is based on a four-segment slant collimator. Each segment is coupled with a planar LaBr3(Ce) scintillator and to a Position Sensitive Photo-Multiplier Tube. We tested two different centroid algorithms for reconstructing the planar images. The 3D information is recovered from the planar images acquired at each position of the rotating collimator by using a simple back-projection algorithm. The proposed approach of a scintigraphic camera based on slant collimators is able to recover the location and the depth of a lesion in a very accurate way.

Abstract: LaBr3:Ce has been showing very promising characteristics as gamma ray imager and spectrometer. In particular its excellent energy resolution values (6% at 140 keV and not, vert, similar3% FWHM at 662 keV), obtained when coupled to a PMT, make it the major competitor of semiconductor detectors working at room temperature. In order to improve its imaging performances, the LaBr3:Ce can easily work as continuous detector allowing sub-millimeter spatial resolution values at 140 keV photon energy when coupled to a Position Sensitive PMT. Further interesting characteristics like a short scintillation decay time (16 ns), a very high light yield (63 000 photons/MeV) and a low afterglow are attracting the scientific community for the potential improvement of a wide range of applications in medicine like PET, SPECT and CT instrumentation. In this paper, we present some preliminary imaging results obtained by coupling H8500 Hamamatsu Flat Panel PMT to two LaBr3:Ce crystals with 50×50 mm2 area, 5 and 10 mm thickness respectively. With the aim to propose a single detector able to combine functional information, for example from Single Photon Emission technique, with the morphological ones from X-ray imaging the spatial resolution results obtained in the energy range between 30 and 302 keV are analyzed and discussed. We obtained very interesting spatial resolution results for gamma ray energy value greater than 60 keV (better than 1 mm, intrinsic value), while in the energy range proper to X-ray applications, like RX-Mammography (about 30 keV), the spatial resolution values resulted about 2 mm.

Abstract: The very low sensitivity of Scintimammography for tumors under 1 cm in diameter, with current nuclear medicine cameras in use, is the major limitation in recommending this test modality for screening purposes. Recently latest generation cameras with superior imaging performances have allowed to foresee a very promising future for scintimammography. Recent technological advances obtained from our research group on the new Lanthanum scintillation crystals are now demonstrating how continuous crystals coupled to Hamamatsu Flat panel tube can overcome a number of limitations in spatial and energy resolution of scintillation arrays, carrying out 6% energy resolution, and submillimeter spatial resolution values at 140 keV. In this paper three basic detection systems have been analysed: a LumaGEM 3200S gamma camera (Gamma Medica, InC., Northridge, USA), based on a cadmium–zinc–telluride (CZT) semiconductor detector with a FoV of 12.5×12.5 cm 2 and with detector elements of 1.6×1.6 mm 2 in size and a detector prototype consisting of a Flat panel PMT coupled to planar LaBr 3 :Ce scintillator. The third one is a first generation large FoV gamma camera chosen for comparison, based on PSPMTs photodetector array coupled to a NaI(Tl) scintillation crystal matrix. LaBr 3 :Ce and CZT cameras showed superior spatial and energy resolution than previous generation one based on NaI(Tl) scintillation array. Both CZT and LaBr gamma cameras showed similar efficiencies for the same energy window though LaBr 3 :Ce continuous crystal showed better imaging performance than pixellated detectors. However large area LaBr 3 :Ce continuous crystals are not available yet.

Abstract: This work proposes a compact dichromatic imaging system for the application of the K-edge digital subtraction technique based on a conventional x-ray tube and a monochromator system. A quasi-monochromatic x-ray beam at the energy of iodine K-edge is produced by Bragg diffraction on a mosaic crystal. Two thin adjacent beams with energies that bracket the K-edge discontinuity are obtained from the diffracted beam by means of a proper collimation system. They are then detected using an array of Si detectors. A home-made phantom is used to study the image quality as a function of iodine concentration. Signal and signal-to-noise ratio analysis has also been performed. The results are compared with theoretical expectations.

Abstract: The aim of the ECORAD collaboration is to develop a dual integrated compact and portable camera able to acquire ultrasound and scintigraphic images at the same time. In this work, we present some simulated results of the scintigraphic part of the system. This camera consists of a rotating slant collimator with four segments connected to a planar LaBr3:Ce scintillator and to a PMT Hamamatsu Flat Panel H8500. Simulations are achieved by means of the GEANT4 program. The volumetric information is reconstructed from the planar images acquired at each position of the rotating collimator by means of a simple back-projection method. Results showed that the planar spatial resolution is better that the axial one. First preliminary results suggest that the detection limit of the camera is about 15:1 (in terms of Tumor/Background ratio) for a spherical tumor with 8 mm diameter located at 3 cm distance from the collimator. This confirms that with our approach it is feasible to develop a compact camera able to recover the 3D position of lesions located at small depths (up to some centimeters), without the need of rotating the camera around the body.

Abstract: The bio-distribution and targeting capability of pharmaceuticals may be assessed in small animals by imaging gamma-rays emitted from radio-isotope markers. Detectors based on the Compton concept allow higher gamma-ray efficiency compared to conventional gamma cameras which employ collimators, and feature millimeter spatial resolution and compact geometry. We are developing a Compton camera that has to address some requirements: the high rates typical of the Compton concept; detection of gamma-rays of different energies that may range from 140kev ( 99m Tc) to 511 kev (+ emitters); presence of gamma and beta radiation with energies up to 2 Mev in case of 188 Re. The camera consists of a thin position-sensitive Tracker that scatters the gamma ray (based on the Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) developed for the LHC-Alice exp.), and a second position-sensitive detection system, to completely absorb the energy of the scattered photons (Calorimeter). Application to higher energy gamma radiation (usually up to 511 kev gammas coming from + emitters) has to be taken into account as well, and calorimeter thickness has to be sized accordingly. This paper is mainly concerned with the design and performance tests of the calorimetric tract of a CC prototype (a module 50x50 mm^2) being developed by this collaboration. Tests have been carried out at the Laboratory for Radiopharmaceuticals and Molecular Imaging (LRIM) situated by the LNL site, which is authorized to deal with radio-isotopes in liquid solution and small animals testing.

Abstract: In a previous experiment we have set up a small gamma camera based on YAP:Ce crystals to monitor the effect of metabolic radiotherapy in mice. Assembling and tests have been carried out at the Laboratory for Radiopharmaceuticals and Molecular Imaging (LRIM), situated by the LNL site, which is authorized to deal with radio-isotopes in liquid solution and small animals testing. The camera features a matrix of tiny YAP pixels (each 0.5x0.5x10 mm 3 ), coupled to a 3 diameter R2486 Hamamatsu Position Sensitive PMT (50 mm sensitive diameter). The intrinsic resolution of the camera is better than 1 mm. Subsequently we have developed a fully tomographic system to properly inspect the mices tiny organs. This system and its performance is what we mainly describe in this paper.

Abstract: In our previous publications we have already discussed a possible use of a computer-guided manipulator for biomedical applications based on our patented method to determining the camera-to-object distance using the so-called tilting collima- tor (TC) technique. Tests about the accuracy of the object localization and the TC camera spatial resolution have already been conducted. A manipulator for simple mechani- cal operations has already been constructed in the Laboratory for Radiopharmaceuticals and Biomolecular Imaging (LRBI) of the LNL. It is coupled to a TC scintillation camera and it has been designed as a three-segmented arm consisting of three mutually perpendicular linear actuators. The system thus ensures three degrees of freedom motion of the manipulator pointer in a volume of 10x10x10cm 3 in the imaged object ? eld (under the camera). In this article we present the methods for guidance and motion control of the manipulator coupled with the TC scintillation camera.

Abstract: In our previous studies we have considered a possible use of a manipulator for biomedical applications guided by the so-called tilting-collimator (TC) scintillation gamma-ray camera. The imaged gamma-ray emitting object is localized exploiting our patented method to determine the camera-to-object distance using a TC camera (patent No RM 2006 A 000216, UIBM Roma). Thus the three coordinates of the object are obtained without moving either the camera or the object.

Abstract: In the framework of the SCINTIRAD Project, Research & Development activity has been focused on the design and test of high-spatial-resolution planar scintillation cameras as gamma-ray imaging detectors. To get additional information from such planar detectors (i.e. to get information on the z-coordinate of the gamma-radiation emitter), a method to measure the detector-to-object distance has been presented [2,3]. In this work the results of radioactive hot-spot localization tests and possible biomedical applications are presented.

Abstract: In our previous studies we have presented a method to measure the detector-to-object distance using a tiltedcollimator (TC) technique. It exploits the shift of the imaged object in the image plane, obtained for tilted positions of a parallel-hole lead collimator. In this work we present the design and first test results of an instrument, which combines the localization of a small-size gamma-ray source with computer-guided precise object manipulation.

Abstract: The availability of LaBr3:Ce crystals from St. Gobain has started various investigations in the field of medical imaging, in particular in PET, SPECT and Compton camera systems. At present LaBr3:Ce crystals are available in a continuous shape covering up to 10×10 cm2 with a thickness of 1 cm, in contrast, serious concerns are arising in pixellated manufacturing. With the aim of verifying the potentials introduced by LaBr3:Ce for SPET imaging, two small γ cameras based on Anger camera principle have been assembled and imaging performances were compared. Two crystals of LaBr3:Ce and NaI(Tl) with the same detection area (5×5 cm2) and thickness of 5 and 1.5 mm, respectively were been integrally assembled with a H8500 Hamamatsu flat panel PMT. Through the thicker crystal, the LaBr3:Ce camera showed superior imaging and detection performances at 140 keV compared with the NaI(Tl) one, with 0.9 mm FWHM intrinsic spatial resolution, 8% FWHM energy resolution and 80% intrinsic detection efficiency.

Abstract: Scintirad is an interdisciplinary research program that studies novel translational radiopharmaceuticals for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Scintirad employs methods of the Nuclear Medicine applied to small animals and develops new instrumentation for high resolution imaging. The first part of this report describes research programs, results and future plans, while the second part, entitled “who we are”, offers an overview of the role of involved teams and facilities.
