Two cases are reported of women with hypothalamic amenorrhea who had sonographic and biochemical evidence of ovarian hyperstimulation during the first cycle of exogenous pulsatile gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) therapy. In one case, it was demonstrated that, with early detection, decrease in the dosage of GnRH may stabilize the condition and prevent further progression of the hyperstimulation. Therefore, the authors suggest that sonographic monitoring should be performed at least in the initial ovulatory cycle so that adjustment of the dosage of GnRH can be made with early detection of hyperstimulation.

The development of the female nemathecium of the genus Ochtodes is followed. Carpogonial, auxiliary cell, and vegetative branches collectively form the nemathecium. The initials of these branches are terminal cells of lateral determinate branches. Structures described by Joly & Ugadim (1966) as carpogonial branches are interpreted as hair cells. The carpogonial branch, four-celled auxiliary cell branches, and post-fertilisation events leading to the formation of the carposporophyte are described for the first time for the genus. Procarpic and non-procarpic assemblages are present in the same plant. The evolutionary and taxonomic significance of the presence of these assemblages is discussed. Based on the structure of the auxiliary cell branch and post-fertilization events leading to the formation of the carposporophyte, the genus Ochtodes appears to be most closely related to Peyssonnelia and Cruoriella of the Peyssonneliaceae.

A Babylonian text from Sultantepe published by Professor Gurney in 1964 noted that the age of seventy marked a “long life” though it goes on to list eighty as “old age” (šībūtu) and ninety as “extreme old age” (littūtum). In congratulating my teacher and colleague on his long life of scholarship this contribution carries with it best wishes for his continuing work as ana labīrūti illak. Having been with Professor Seton Lloyd at Sultantepe on the day in 1951 when the site was first surveyed and chosen as full of promise it would seem appropriate to offer here a text which virtually completes the first tablet of the poem of the Righteous Sufferer (ludlul bēl nēmeqi). In 1954 Professor Gurney made available, in conjunction with W. G. Lambert, a new text from Sultantepe which marked a notable advance on our hitherto scanty knowledge of that tablet. Subsequently Professor Lambert published the first part of the hymn of praise to the god Marduk (ll. 1–12) with which this classical poem opens.

Streptococcus lactis was grown with Aspergillus parasiticus in modified APT broth. Three inoculation procedures were used: (a) S. lactis was grown 3 days, then conidia of A. parasiticus were added (SLAP), (b) both organisms were added simultaneously (ST) and (c) A. parasiticus was grown 3 days, then S. lactis was added (APSL). At 3, 6 and 10 days of incubation, contents of flasks were analyzed for growth of each organism, pH of broth and aflatoxin content. S. lactis did not survive past 3 days when grown alone. In ST cultures, S. lactis grew to the same extent as in the control at 3 days; it remained viable at a low level through 10 days. In APSL cultures, S. lactis growth was inhibited at 3 days but the bacterium survived through 7 days (10 days of mold growth) at reduced numbers. At 3 days there were no appreciable differences in growth of A. parasiticus. At 6 days, in ST and SLAP cultures, growth of the mold was inhibited, while in the APSL culture growth increased over that in the control. At 10 days, growth of mold was somewhat increased over the control in all test conditions. The pH of broth in the A. parasiticus control and APSL culture was 6 at 3 days, dropped to 4.5–4.6 at 6 days and rose to 7 by 10 days. In ST and SLAP cultures, the pH was at 4.1 at 3 days and rose to pH 7 by 10 days. Aflatoxin (B1 plus G1) content was lowest at 3 days and increased at 6 days. Between 6 and 10 days two patterns were observed. In APSL and SLAP cultures, aflatoxin content decreased, while it increased in the ST culture. These patterns occurred when aflatoxin content was expressed on a total or per gram of dried mycelium basis. At 3 days the amounts of aflatoxin B1 and G1 were approximately equal. Between 3–6 days the amount of G1 increased more rapidly than that of B1. Between 6 and 10 days in the ST culture, the amount of G1 increased at a slower rate than that of B1 while in SLAP and APSL cultures, the amount of G1 decreased more rapidly than that of B1. When a different lot of the same medium was used, aflatoxin production was greatly reduced. The pH of broth at all test conditions rose through the incubation period.

Tribute must be paid to Richard Barnett for his contributions,inter alia, to the interpretation of many of the scenes on the Assyrian sculptures. His studies have drawn attention to the detailed information which may be drawn from this important source. In many conversations with me as a colleague in the British Museum he showed particular interest in the Assyrian landscape and representation of nature. Thus he identified the Assyrian garden in the reliefs of Ashurbanipal's N. Palace at Nineveh (Plate XXXIIIa). In this the garden is drawn as planned around a hill, or high feature, on top of which is a garden house. Watering was by aqueduct and channels arranged so that in the downhill flow no material part was inaccessible to irrigation. Trees which provided some shade, also served as supports for vines planted between them. In the Assyrian tradition temples also had similar gardens associated with them.

A description is given of the physical consolidation of the Bell manual and the Automatic Electric telephone systems of Los Angeles, Cal., which previously to June 1, 1918 operated as separate systems. While similar consolidations had been made previously they included relatively small volumes of traffic and afforded no engineering precedents as a guide to the consolidation of two systems serving 129,000 stations. The plans for the physical union of the two companies were devised by a joint committee of engineering representatives, and contained a number of novel operating and construction methods which are described. Under the new system each subscriber has access to every other subscriber in the Los Angeles exchange and to all long-distance lines centering there. Where duplicate services were installed the subscriber was given his choice as to whether he would retain the manual or the automatic system, and about 13,000 duplicates were eliminated, the choice between the two types being equally divided.

Summary St Paul Rocks are unique because they are the only oceanic islets composed of dynamically metamorphosed ultrabasic rocks. They lie in a highly seismic region where the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge has been displaced some 260 miles in an E-W direction. Although a definite conclusion cannot be reached at this stage as to whether the rocks are modified cumulates within the oceanic crust or a displaced sample of the upper mantle, detailed petrological, mineralogical, chemical and isotopic investigations indicate that many of their properties are not inconsistent with those expected for displaced upper mantle rocks. Consideration should therefore be given to the desirability of a bore hole from either the main islet, or from one of the shoals to the east of the islets, to determine the nature of the rocks within the mass, their depth distribution and their heat flow contributions. If unmylonitized or relatively unmylonitized samples were discovered, the exact mineralogical, chemical and isotopic composition of the rocks before dynamic metamorphism could be established, and possibly their origin unequivocally determined.

A continuous series of 1/2-cm.-thick sections from a pilot core, collected at the top of a small knoll in the equatorial Atlantic have been investigated by a variety of methods. In 1954 the suggestion was made that in this core the carbonate content was a reflection of temperature in the upper layer of the sea. Paleotemperature measurements on the tests of Globigerinoides sacculifera are given for 33 sections. The broad relation between paleo temperatures and rates of accumulation of $CaCO_{3}$ supports this hypothesis. If allowance is made for probable errors, the paleotemperature measurements are not inconsistent with the hypothesis that the secondary carbonate oscillations are also a reflection of temperature change.

As sea water apart from liquid ammonia has the highest heat capacity of any solid or liquid the deposits collecting on the deep-sea floor, in favourable localities, give a far better record than the land of past temperature changes, provided the dominant component is planktonic Foraminifera, and that the rate of sedimentation of at least one of the other components has remained constant with time. There are three possible methods whereby past temperature changes in the upper layer of the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean can be revealed. The first is the productivity method. As the minimal factor which influences the productivity of planktonic Foraminifera is apparently temperature, it is possible in the ideal case where the rate of sedimentation of the non-calcareous components has remained constant with time; and where there has been no contribution to the carbonate content other than by the shells of planktonic Foraminifera, and provided there has been no appreciable solution of carbonate, to follow the changing temperature in the upper layer of the sea by determining the CO 2 content in a series of samples throughout the length of the core. This method is clearly applicable to the more general case where the rate of sedimentation of only one of the non-calcareous components has remained constant with time. A new technique has been developed for determining accurately the CO 2 content in globigerina ooze cores. The second method, due to Mr Ovey, depends on the species distribution of planktonic Foraminifera in 1000 specimens > 127 μ . The third method has been developed by Professor Urey and depends on the 18 O content of individual planktonic species. Consideration is given to the possibility of the CO 2 changes being spurious and unrelated to temperature changes. Perhaps the most convincing argument against this hypothesis is the similarity between the carbonate curve in the Atlantic core and the carbonate accumulation curves for the Pacific cores, as well as in the number of maxima and minima and in their respective ages. In the top portion of an undisturbed pilot core, there are apparently CO 2 oscillations of a shorter period. A continuous series of sections, approximately ½ cm thick, were taken down this core. It has been possible to determine the total weight of non-calcareous components, dried at 105° C, in a column of unit area down to any depth in the core, and by correlating two distinct CO 2 oscillations with two climatic changes of known ages, the mass contribution per year can be computed. The inverse relation between TiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 and CaCO 3 suggests that there has been no marked deviations in the rate of sedimentation of the non-calcareous components with time. On this assumption, it is possible to compute the age at any depth. There is an apparent agreement between the ages of these oscillations and the ages of known second-order climatic changes. The fact that the age according to these computations of the top of the core is A. D. 1838 gives support to these correlations. There are two effects to be clearly distinguished: first, a long period change and secondly, minor oscillations superimposed on these major changes. The necessity for the development of a simple coring device to take short but wide undisturbed cores, which are truely representative of the natural sedimentary column of the deep-sea-floor, is pointed out.

Professor Seton Lloyd's publications and teaching have always been marked by his profound understanding of Mesopotamian architecture. It therefore seems appropriate, in this volume to his honour, to present some hitherto unpublished tablets which may add a little to our knowledge of some aspects of the ancient practice of surveying. The small tablet BM.38217 (Fig. 1), probably originating from Babylon itself, shows in elevation a six, originally seven, stepped ziggurat with the principal dimensions given, UŠ being used for the length, and SAG (the “short side” of the rectangle as drawn) for the height. The second level is described as “Front (-view) of the dwelling of Anshar” (pa-ni šu-bat an-šár). While this note may well apply to the whole of this unique plan, it is to be observed that the first two storeys have accentuated (and external) markings which must represent the frontal and lateral access. The inner markings are perhaps to show where the ramps or stairway crossed the front of the main building (as in the ziggurat at Ur). The gaps in the base of the third and probably fourth (and higher?) stages may show that a direct frontal stairway to the seventh stage was envisaged. This seems a better explanation than that a five staged ziggurat is shown imposed upon the ground-plan of an adjacent and larger building. The lower stages are certainly not the plan of any two-storied “temple of Anshar” or of a gate-building.

During the course of the John Murray Expedition some 22,000 miles of the floor of the Arabian Sea and the neighbouring areas of the Indian Ocean were mapped by means of the Echosounding apparatus. The region between India and Africa was crossed four times, namely:(i) from Aden to Karachi,(ii) from Bombay to Mombasa,(iii) from Zanzibar to Colombo, and(iv) from Colombo to Aden,while more detailed surveys were carried out in the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, and the region off Zanzibar.

scattered in the doorway. Across the courtyard opposite the throne-room were a series of rooms (NTS 9-10) apparently used as scribal offices. Professor Mallowan has shown that it was in NTS 10 that George Smith found the upper part of a large copy of the Annals of Tiglath-pileser III (K 3751) on which he wrote the provenence "S. E. Nimroud." A fragment of the same king's annals (ND 400) was found some twenty yards away,2 and there is evidence that at the sack of the building in 614 B.c. the historical records at least were scattered in this area. It is noteworthy that in this same room a lexicographical text (ND 4311) listing Sumerian signs with their Old Babylonian equivalents-evidence of a local scribal school-was also found. This piece directly joins K 8520 (in the British Museum) and so underlines the likelihood that a number of texts of the "K" collection originally came from this building at Nimrud. It is probable that the court scribes used this wing of the palace, though the discovery of texts in the fill of Courtyard XVIII and as far as the outer reaches of the throne-room area might indicate that the scribes themselves worked also on the upper floor.3 The range of rooms across the southern courtyard (NT 10-11 and possibly 13-16) i.e. that opposite the temple of Nabu itself, produced a large number of tablets, though many being sun-dried, are in a poor condition, but again perhaps some had once been housed in an upper storey.4 "This pitiful remnant of a once great collection"'5 had obviously suffered from looting in antiquity, but sufficient remains to show that it represents the product of many hands including the fine stylus-work of skilled scribes copying texts for special library or temple use. The epidiorite with which this note is concerned is exposed in a small overgrown quarry 50 yards north of St. Catherine’s old Chapel, Loch Fyne. The rock is soft and is easy to cut, and it is said that some was used in the building of Inveraray Castle.

Planktonic foraminiferal tests are not formed in isotopic equilibrium with seawater; the deviation is species dependent.
