Abstract

International audience; In this paper, the first evaluation campaign on 2D-face images using the multimodal IV 2 database is presented. The five appearance-based algorithms in competition are evaluated on four experimental protocols, including experiments with challenging illumination and pose variabilities. The results confirm the advantages of the Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and the importance of the training set for the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based approaches. The experiments show the robustness of the Gabor based approach combined with LDA, in order to cope with challenging face recognition conditions. This evaluation shows the interest and the richness of the IV 2 multimodal database.

Abstract

International audience; We analyze teletraffic capacity performance of a WDM/DS-OCDMA Passive Optical Network. Hybrid WDM/DS-OCDMA PON is proposed to increase user capacity performance and to be a cost effective method per wavelength of a WDM PON. For each prime code used in this system, an appropriate simultaneous capacity threshold has been evaluated in a manner to ensure good transmission performance (BER~10− 9). Since this capacity threshold is inferior to the nominal resource capacity of the considered code, a soft blocking of the system has been determined even if resources in the system are still available. The teletraffic capacity of the WDM/DS-OCDMA system has been then analyzed under the maximum of soft blocking probability constraint for different prime codes. This value is dependent on the probability of channel activity factor. It is demonstrated that using extended quadratic congruent codes (EQC) with better correlation properties, causes the teletraffic capacity to be closer to the nominal teletraffic capacity.

Abstract

In this paper, we interest on the synthesis of spectral phase OCDMA encoders/decoders based on step chirped Fiber Bragg Gratings to enhance their spectral and temporal efficien cy. In this process, we use a real-coded Genetic Algorithm as a synthesis technique. The encoders/decoders are formed by step chirped fiber Bragg gratings with S phase shifts giving rise to bipolar code signatures. In fact, the device structure results from th e concatenation of fiber Bragg gratings with different nominal periods and S phase shifts inserted between the gratings to implement the code behavior. Keywords: Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA), spectral phase encoders/decoders, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG), genetic algorithm, synthesis. 1. INTRODUCTION Optical Code Division Multiple Access (O CDMA) is expected to be a potential ca ndidate for the future generation of optical access network offering asynchronou s access for the end-users [1]. Many ty pes of encoding have been studied during those last years such as Direct Sequence (DS) encoding [2,3,4], Frequency Encoding (FE) [5,6] and Fast Frequency Hopping (FFH) encoding [7,8], where the favored el ements for the encoders and the decoders are Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) since they are readily fiber compatible. For DS-OCDMA configuration, several setups have been pr oposed using a superstructured FBG, composed of several uniform FBGs separated by sections of optical fiber with variable length to carry out the ON-OFF keying codeword assigned to each user [9]. However, the implemented encoders /decoders exhibit a low total mean reflected optical power related to the management of the optical power depletion through the superstructure. In addition, this concept of encoders/decoders can only be used fo r the implementation of unipolar codes. With advances in grating fabrication technology, it is now possible to realize very complex grating profiles to phase encode ultra-short pulses for pulse shaping and signal processing applications [10]. This allows the design of spectral phase OCDMA encoders/decoders in order to implement bipolar OCDMA codes. Those codes contribute to reduce the multiple-access interference (MAI) and to increase the multiplexing capacity due to their strict orthogonality. Within the context of spectral phase encoded (SPE) OCDMA, superstructured fiber Bragg gratings (SFBGs) [11] have been considered using a conventional uniform period FBG onto which an additional, slowly varying refractive index modulation profile is imposed. This slowly varying profile can change the overall amplitude or add discrete phase shifts to the grating structure [12, 13]. Here, we consider a step chirp fiber Bragg grating in which some S phase shifts are implemented in order to get bipolar codes. In this paper, we present the synthesis of spectral phase encoders/decoders based on a desired spectral behavior. Here, we solve an inverse scattering problem where the design of encoders/decoders needs a very good accuracy in the spectral domain of the device. Through the synthesis techniques, we will take care to reach the better physical parameters to achieve the target spectra. We implement a synthesis process, based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach. In this approach only the target spectra is given to generate directly the physical parameters of the different fiber Bragg gratings

Abstract

We studied selective area growth modeling and characterization of the AlGaInAs material system. We used a three-dimensional vapor phase diffusion model to extract the effective diffusion lengths of Al, Ga, and In species from measured thickness profiles of the three binaries AlAs, GaAs, and InP. Our growth conditions yield to 50, 85, and 10 μm for Al, Ga, and In, respectively. Based on these values, we achieved a precise prediction of AlGaInAs thickness, composition, band gap, and biaxial strain variations in different selective area growth conditions. Particular attention was paid to the influence of neighboring cells in the case of high mask density. This configuration occurs in practical component mask layout. High mask density leads to interferences between masked cells and enhances the effect of the long diffusion length of aluminum and gallium species. Abstract

Thicknesses and compositions of AlGaInAs-based layers grown by low-pressure metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy (LP-MOVPE) in the regime of selective area growth (SAG) have been measured and calculated. In this study, we have grown InAs, GaAs and AlAs binary bulk layers on patterned InAs and GaAs substrates, respectively, in order to assess separately the vapor-phase diffusion (VPD) length (D/k) of indium, gallium and aluminum species. Special care has been taken in the evaluation of the Aluminum D/k ratio, on which little information was available. A 3D VPD model has been used to predict the composition and thickness profiles of various alloys. The calculated profiles have been compared to the experimental ones for GaInAs, AlInAs, AlGaInAs layers and GaAlAs layers deposited on patterned InP and GaAs substrates, respectively. The good agreement between modeling and experiment, together with the perfect selectivity obtained for all the different alloys, holds for the validity of the calculated D/k ratio of Al, Ga and In species. In MOVPE-SAG, the efficiency of a computational model is a key issue for the engineering of future SAG integrated optical devices.

Abstract

International audience; Telecare applications are composed by different kinds of services. Some of these services require high level availability and performance because they involve human lives. One possible solution to improve availability and performance in these applications is to make an efficient distribution of service avoiding concentration of several tasks on only one server. This work presents a load-balancing platform based on differentiation of services that increases application-level QoS (quality of service) in a telecare application. The platform allows the coexistence of Internet services and distributed objects. We also present experimental results showing that the platform balances the imposed load and differentiates the QoS offered to different services.

Abstract

Pattern formation from drying droplets containing sedimenting particles and dewetting of thin films of such suspensions was studied. The dewetting causes the formation of finger-like patterns near the contact line which leave behind a deposit of branches. We find that the strikingly low speed of dewetting is due to the high particle concentration in the contact line region, leading to a strongly enhanced viscosity. For pattern formation from drying droplets (containing particles), evaporation also causes dewetting. In both cases, we find a similar relationship between the size of the patterns and the dewetting speed. The coefficient of this relationship gives us the effective viscosity at the contact line. We present a simple model that accounts for this, and that shows that the size of the particles is the relevant length scale in both problems.

Abstract

International audience; The IRIM group is a consortium of French teams work- ing on Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval. This paper describes its participation to the TRECVID 2012 se- mantic indexing and instance search tasks. For the semantic indexing task, our approach uses a six-stages processing pipelines for computing scores for the likeli- hood of a video shot to contain a target concept. These scores are then used for producing a ranked list of im- ages or shots that are the most likely to contain the tar- get concept. The pipeline is composed of the following steps: descriptor extraction, descriptor optimization, classi cation, fusion of descriptor variants, higher-level fusion, and re-ranking. We evaluated a number of dif- ferent descriptors and tried di erent fusion strategies. The best IRIM run has a Mean Inferred Average Pre- cision of 0.2378, which ranked us 4th out of 16 partici- pants. For the instance search task, our approach uses two steps. First individual methods of participants are used to compute similrity between an example image of in- stance and keyframes of a video clip. Then a two-step fusion method is used to combine these individual re- sults and obtain a score for the likelihood of an instance to appear in a video clip. These scores are used to ob- tain a ranked list of clips the most likely to contain the queried instance. The best IRIM run has a MAP of 0.1192, which ranked us 29th on 79 fully automatic runs.
