53. PVDF piezoelectric voltage coefficient in situ measurements as a function of applied stress.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Direct piezoelectric g31 voltage coefficient was measured in situ as a function of applied tensile stress for films of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Measurements were performed under quasi-static conditions with applied strain rates of 0.5-1.5 mm/min for strains up to 12%. Open-circuit voltage was measured with a contact-less electrostatic voltmeter. Obtained results show a strong dependence of the g31 coefficient of mono-oriented PVDF films on the applied stress, with a maximum value of the coefficient in the transition region between elastic and plastic deformation zones. The effect of sample geometry on the apparent g31 coefficient is shown and discussed. Abstract

The physical principles behind and various applications of magnetic imaging films are reviewed. The imaging films considered include, liquid and solidified nanoparticle films, thin solid films of bismuth-substituted ferrite garnets, and low- and high-coercivity amorphous films of rare earth-transition metal alloys (Gd-Co, Tb-Fe-Co). Preparation details and properties of uniaxial and planar magneto-optical indicator films (MOIF) are described and discussed alongside the analysis of the conditions for optimal magneto-optic (MO) contrast and experimental setup construction. Abstract

Magnetic interactions offer outstanding performances and provide the base for powerful and efficient Magnetic Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (Mag-MEMS). The strong points of magnetic interactions are presented: high energy density and force density, stable forces without power supply, remote actuation, levitation, high-efficiency electrical generation, etc. In the first section, the scale reduction laws are described: in general they are highly favourable to magnetic interactions, particularly, where permanent magnets are involved. As an added bonus, extreme current densities are admissible in integrated μ-coils: this further improves force density in currentdriven devices. In the second section, the basic components of Mag-MEMS are reviewed; technological processes and specifications are only briefly explored here, as they are fully covered in other chapters (μ-magnets, μ-coils, ‘active' magnetic materials). In the third section, a panorama of applications of Mag-MEMS is explored: switches, motors, generators, commutators, scanners, sensors, etc. Illustrative examples are taken from state-of-the-art research prototypes and preindustrial devices, developed within the Grenoble MEMS and magnetism community. Abstract

Novel planar magnetic micromotors and microgenerators of active diameter ∅ 8 mm were developed, delivering estimated torques of 100 μN.m at speeds in excess of 140000 r/min. Such high performances are due to an innovative use of deep lithography and silicon etching for the fabrication of the stator coils. The hybrid design of the micromotors combines a pair of double-layer three-phase stator coils and a disc-shaped SmCo rotor with eight or 15 axial pairs of poles, all enclosed in a case fabricated using watch-industry micromachining. Magnetic interactions provide outstanding performances for powerful integrated micro-actuators. This paper explains how magnetic interactions involving permanent magnets, currents, and various magnetic materials remain very effective and even improve as dimensions are reduced. The technological problems that have slowed the development of magnetic micro-actuators and systems (MAGMAS) are progressively being solved. As long as materials scientists continue to develop better thick-film patterned permanent magnets compatible with microsystem technologies, MAGMAS will have a promising future. Abstract

Cet ouvrage dédié à la description des différentes familles de micro-actionneurs constitue une suite au premier volume coordonné par Orphée Cugat intitulé Micro-actionneurs électroactifs. Les deux volumes se donnent pour objectif de dresser un panorama de l'état des lieux actuel depuis les applications visées jusqu'aux matériaux de base et technologies utilisés pour les réaliser. Micro-actionneurs électromagnétiques comporte deux parties qui traitent d'une part de l'actionnement électromagnétique et des microsystèmes, et d'autre part des briques de base et applications. La première partie est constituée de trois chapitres, leurs objets étant la justification des choix d'actionnement magnétique, la réduction d'échelle des MAGMAS et les densités de courant dans les MAGMAS. La deuxième partie est divisée en huit chapitres traitant respectivement des bobinages, aimants permanents, matériaux doux, couches magnétostrictives, micromoteurs, microrelais, micro-actionneurs magnétostrictifs, microsuspensions magnétiques.
