Abstract

The asymptotic normalisation coefficients (ANC) for the vertex $^{10}$B $\to$ $^9$Be + p is deduced from a set of different proton transfer reactions at different energies. This set should ensure the peripheral character of the reaction and availability of data for the elastic channels. The problems associated with the characteristics of the data and the analysis are discussed. For a subgroup of the set of available data, the uniqueness property of the extracted ANC is fulfilled. 52. Probing halo nucleus structure through intermediate energy elastic scattering

Abstract

This work addresses the question of precisely what features of few body models of halo nuclei are probed by elastic scattering on protons at high centre-of-mass energies. Our treatment is based on a multiple scattering expansion of the proton-projectile transition amplitude in a form which is well adapted to the weakly bound cluster picture of halo nuclei. In the specific case of $^{11}$Li scattering from protons at 800 MeV/u we show that because core recoil effects are significant, scattering crosssections can not, in general, be deduced from knowledge of the total matter density alone. We advocate that the optical potential concept for the scattering of halo nuclei on protons should be avoided and that the multiple scattering series for the full transition amplitude should be used instead., Comment: 8 pages REVTeX, 1 eps figure, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

The transfer reaction $^7{\rm Be(d,n)}^8{\rm B}$ is modelled for the recent low experimental energies using the DWBA. Tests of the validity of the ANC method for the extraction of the $S_{17}$ astrophysical factor are performed. We show that a peripheral assumption is no longer accurate for center of mass energies greater than approximately 15 MeV. In all cases we found that core deformation and/or excitation effects to be small as long as the optical potential for the entrance channel is not strongly surface peaked. Multistep corrections to the DWBA were found to be small. We also emphasize that the lack of knowledge of the optical potentials for the entrance and outgoing channels induces severe uncertainties in the extracted $S_{17}$ astrophysical factor., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, to be published in Phys Rev C

Abstract

Quadrupole and octupole couplings to all bound states of $^7$Be are included in describing the capture reaction $^7$Be$(p,\gamma)^8$B. We verify, contrary to what we had initially stated, that the energy behaviour of the Astrophysical S-factor in the energy range of interest is not significantly sensitive to the core couplings in the g.s. (g.s.) of $^8$B although its overall magnitude is shifted. We find there is some sensitivity to the various deformation models when introducing the nuclear interaction for calculating the scattering states. The various deformation models predict quite different contributions to the quadrupole and magnetic moments but in order to compare with the data the quadrupole and magnetic moment of $^7$Be need to be measured., Comment: 11 pages, postscript

Contains fulltext : 291084.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Reactivation of the latent HIV-1 reservoir is a first step toward triggering reservoir decay. Here, we investigated the impact of the BAF complex inhibitor pyrimethamine on the reservoir of people living with HIV-1 (PLWH). Twenty-eight PLWH on suppressive antiretroviral therapy were randomized (1:1:1:1 ratio) to receive pyrimethamine, valproic acid, both, or no intervention for 14 days. The primary end point was change in cell-associated unspliced (CA US) HIV-1 RNA at days 0 and 14. We observed a rapid, modest, and significant increase in (CA US) HIV-1 RNA in response to pyrimethamine exposure, which persisted throughout treatment and follow-up. Valproic acid treatment alone did not increase (CA US) HIV-1 RNA or augment the effect of pyrimethamine. Pyrimethamine treatment did not result in a reduction in the size of the inducible reservoir. These data demonstrate that the licensed drug pyrimethamine can be repurposed as a BAF complex inhibitor to reverse HIV-1 latency in vivo in PLWH, substantiating its potential advancement in clinical studies.

He dicho muchas veces, y escrito en los agradecimientos de uno de mis libros, gue Félix Denegri Luna ejerció durante más de treinta años voluntariamente las funciones de embajador de la cultura del Perú en Bolivia. Tenía las mejores credenciales intelectuales -presidente de la Academia Peruana de la Historia, entre otras- para cumplir esa misión, que se había impuesto a sí mismo sin necesidad de títulos de Cancillería. No son muchos -quizá ninguno más- los peruanos que hicieron una labor con tanta pasión y constancia para lograr un mayor conocimiento entre su país y Bolivia por medio de los instrumentos de la cultura. La primera vez que apareció en La Paz, allá por la década de los cincuenta, fue con un enorme lote de libros para distribuirlos entre quienes eran capaces de apreciar su contenido.

83. Evaluation of a clinical decision support tool for matching cancer patients to clinical trials using simulation-based research

Abstract

Simulation-based research (SBR) methods have been proposed as an alternative methodology for evaluating digital health solutions; however, applicability remains to be established. This study used SBR to evaluate a clinical decision support (CDS) tool used for matching cancer patients to clinical trials. 25 clinicians and research staff were recruited to match 10 synthetic patient cases to clinical trials using both the CDS tool and publicly available online trial databases. Participants were significantly more likely to report having sufficient time (p = 0.020) and to require less mental effort (p = 0.001) to complete trial matching with the CDS tool. Participants required less time for trial matching using the CDS tool, but the difference was not significant (p = 0.093). Most participants reported that they had sufficient guidance to participate in the simulations (96%). This study demonstrates the use of SBR methods is a feasible approach to evaluating digital health solutions.

84. INVERSE MODEL USING LAND AND PROPERTY SUB-SYSTEMS FOR PLANNING FUTURE CITIES: A GENERAL FRAMEWORK

Abstract

This paper suggests, based on literature review, the use of the inverse model coupled with land and property systems to support urban decision-making. The inverse model is to be used for planning decisions today to achieve the desired tomorrow. This approach has been used previously in urban planning with a property system. The use of a property system alone is insufficient in dealing with the complexity of urban systems. Complex systems are made up of sub-systems that interact with each other; the integration of two sub-systems offers a first and simple alternative to address the complexity of urban systems. We suggest the use of two parametric approaches, logistic regression and house price, to model land and property sub-systems, respectively. Finally, we stress that further studies are needed to integrate the inverse model with other statistical techniques that also deal with complexity, such as cellular automata (CA) or agent-based models.

85. Grizzlies and gazelles: Duty factor is an effective measure for categorizing running style in English Premier League soccer players

Abstract

English Premier League soccer players run at multiple speeds throughout a game. The aim of this study was to assess how well the duty factor, a dimensionless ratio based on temporal variables, described running styles in professional soccer players. A total of 25 players ran on an instrumented treadmill at 12, 16, and 20 km/h. Spatiotemporal and ground reaction force data were recorded for 30 s at each speed; video data (500 Hz) were collected to determine footstrike patterns. In addition to correlation analysis amongst the 25 players, two groups (both N = 9) of high and low duty factors were compared. The duty factor was negatively correlated with peak vertical force, center of mass (CM) vertical displacement, and leg stiffness (kleg) at all speeds (r ≥ −0.51, p ≤ 0.009). The low duty factor group had shorter contact times, longer flight times, higher peak vertical forces, greater CM vertical displacement, and higher kleg (p < 0.01). Among the high DF group players, eight were rearfoot strikers at all speeds, compared with three in the low group. The duty factor is an effective measure for categorizing soccer players as being on a continuum from terrestrial (high duty factor) to aerial (low duty factor) running styles, which we metaphorically refer to as “grizzlies” and “gazelles,” respectively. Because the duty factor distinguishes running style, there are implications for the training regimens of grizzlies and gazelles in soccer, and exercises to improve performance should be developed based on the biomechanical advantages of each spontaneous running style.

Abstract

We measured 135 cross sections of residual nuclei produced in fragmentation reactions of 12C, 14N, and 13−16,20,22O projectiles impinging on a carbon target at kinetic energies of near 400A MeV, most of them for the first time, with the R 3B/LAND setup at the GSI facility in Darmstadt (Germany). The use of this state-of-the-art experimental setup in combination with the inverse kinematics technique gave the full identification in atomic and mass numbers of fragmentation residues with a high precision. The cross sections of these residues were determined with uncertainties below 20% for most of the cases. These data are compared to other previous measurements with stable isotopes and are also used to benchmark different model calculations.

93. Corticosteroids and metabolic resuscitation (hydrocortisone, ascorbic acid and thiamine) in sepsis and septic shock

Abstract

In accordance with the recommendations of, among others, the Surviving Sepsis Campaign, adjunctive therapies may play a role in the treatment and the prognosis in sepsis patients. Corticosteroids, ascorbic acid, and thiamine has been identified as a potential therapy for septic shock alone or in combination. Since many years, low-dosis corticosteroids has been proposed as adjuvant therapies for these patients. However, there are still many controversies regarding the role of systemic low-dose corticosteroids as a part of the treatment of septic shock. In recent clinical and experimental investigations, mitochondrion-target therapy (ascorbic acid and thiamine) for sepsis has been suggested to reduce MODS severity and mortality although their clinical results are not yet convincing for their use. In the present article, we have performed a narrative review of the current literature including pathophysiologic rationale and the current evidence for such therapies in septic patients. Abstract

13 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., We measured 135 cross sections of residual nuclei produced in fragmentation reactions of C12, N14, and O13−16,20,22 projectiles impinging on a carbon target at kinetic energies of near 400A MeV, most of them for the first time, with the RB3/LAND setup at the GSI facility in Darmstadt (Germany). The use of this state-of-the-art experimental setup in combination with the inverse kinematics technique gave the full identification in atomic and mass numbers of fragmentation residues with a high precision. The cross sections of these residues were determined with uncertainties below 20% for most of the cases.
