The discovery of a vast architectural group including a palisade and buildings dated to early 3rd millennium BC on the edge of the Deûle Valley at Houplin-Ancoisne le Marais de Santes constituted a starting point for the identification of regional dwelling structures dated to the Final Neolithic. The excavation of a surface greater than one hectare, situated in a valley bottom, revealed (among other things) a discard zone preserved in a paleo-channel of the Deûle, which was filled-in during the Holocene. The organic remains trapped in the meander created the unexpected conditions and favorable environment for collecting samples in a reliably determined chronostratigraphic position, for paleoenvironmental analyses. The environment thus perceived in the vegetal assemblages around Marais de Santes evolved from a marshy landscape bordered by a thick and dense riparian forest to an oak grove enriched with ash, developing both on cool, humid soils and on better drained ones. This forest offered a true continuity between these different landscapes. Faced with a growing quantity of naturalist and cultural information, a multidisciplinary approach was the only one capable of measuring the amplitude of interactions between the natural environment and the society. The exceptional nature of this site, illustrated by the monumentality of the main building, justified a complete publication of the artefacts and their analysis, thus enabling a renewal of our knowledge of the Deûle-Escaut cultural group., Découvert à une dizaine de kilomètres au sud de Lille, le site d’Houplin-Ancoisne le Marais de Santes présente un vaste ensemble architectural élevé sur les bords de la vallée de la Deûle, daté du IIIe millénaire avant notre ère.

The rescue excavation of the Marais du Colombier site, Varennes-sur-Seine (Seine-et-Marne) enabled us to study a rural establishment dating back to the first half of the 3rd century BC set in a damp low-lying area of the plain situated in the lower reaches of the Seine/Yonne confluence. The establishment, structured around an empty area interpreted as a courtyard or horticultural space, has nearly all the components of a rural establishment: dwellings, granaries and other annexed buildings, silos, wells and ditches. Among the buildings, the dwelling was notable for the adoption of an oval plan probably supporting the hypothesis of a roof structure, which makes it one of the most ancient of the Iron age. Of the many macro vegetal remains, preserved in several pits, the main one being 5003 situated near the house, enabled a palaeobotanical analysis. The combination of archaeological, archaeobotanical (carpology, anthracology, xylology) and archaeozoological data enables a reconstruction of a surrounding environment marked by its great diversity and exploitation (plants cultivated, collection environment, livestock farming, hunting). All the elements combine in this agricultural establishment to reveal a production unit providing a comfortable level of life. Its organisation is rather different from that of the most part of the early La Tène period and from the beginning of middle La Tène of the Senonais area and seems to prefigure that of the enclosure sites of the middle and late La Tène. As for the presence of human remains, they bring elements on the funerary practices connected to children dying at a young age and on cultural practices in a domestic context.

CITRUS fruits ,ECONOMIC indicators ,NARRATIVE art ,ECONOMIC status ,RUTACEAE - Abstract
This study delves into the multifaceted realm of citrus fruits, exploring their significance and socioeconomic implications from their early introduction to Western Muslim and Renaissance gardens, tracing their journey throughout history. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, drawing from biological, archaeobotanical, iconographic, and textual sources, our study offers a comprehensive exploration of citrus symbolism and cultural significance, integrating historical, artistic, horticultural, and socioeconomic viewpoints. The genus Citrus (Rutaceae) comprises around thirty species and its natural habitat spans from the southern slopes of the Himalayas to China, Southeast Asia, nearby islands, and Queensland. Originating from only four of these species, humans have cultivated hundreds of hybrids and thousands of varieties, harnessing their culinary, medicinal, and ornamental potential worldwide. We delve into the symbolic value of citrus fruits, which have served as indicators of economic status and power. From their early presence in Mediterranean religious rituals to their depiction in opulent Roman art and mythical narratives like the Garden of the Hesperides, citrus fruits have epitomized luxury and desire. Christian lore intertwines them with the forbidden fruit of Eden, while Islamic and Sicilian gardens and Renaissance villas signify their prestige. We analyze diverse perspectives, from moralists to hedonists, and examine their role in shaping global agriculture, exemplified by rare varieties like aurantii foetiferi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rescue excavation at Les Chauffeaux in the municipality of Saint Maure-de-Touraine in Indre-et-Loire has enabled the discovery of two occupations from the Iron Age. The first installation, characterized by some pits and buildings, has been dated to La Tène A1 (480-430 BC). For this first phase of the site, an exceptional element of bi-metallic quiver constitutes a likely deposit, rare in this context. The second occupation corresponds to La Tène B, that is the 4th and the beginning of the 3th century BC; it consists of a small battery of silos and of some buildings on posts. The analysis of archaeological material makes it possible to suggest a chronological and environmental frame in these two open establishments. These two occupations contribute to the knowledge of the rural establishments of the beginning of the second Iron Age in Touraine in a still very little known landscape.

- Abstract
This book takes a novel approach by highlighting comparative and long-term historical perspectives on experimental practice. The juxtaposition of accounts of natural, social, and medical experimentation is very enlightening, especially because the authors put the emphasis on the different kinds of objects of experimentation (physical matter, chemical reagents, social groups, organizations, sick individuals, archeological remains) and demonstrate how much the kinds of objects matter for the practice of experimentation, its methods, tools, and methodologies. Taken together, the chapters raise several fascinating questions for further study: What do these different approaches have in common? Why do we call them “experimentation”? What are the intersections among the fields and their developments? The volume engages philosophical approaches that are not well known to Anglophone readers (Bachelard, Bergson, Bernard, Canguilhem, among others) and brings to attention a wealth of Francophone secondary literature on past and present scientific experimentation. The collection fills a yawning gap in science, science studies, and philosophy of science teaching, making it particularly valuable philosophers and historians of science in all subfields.

- Abstract
This book compiles the latest information on different kinds of natural, plant-based super sweeteners. A book on alternative, natural super sweeteners is extremely timely and useful, especially, in light of the decreasing cultivable area, ever increasing demand for sucrose, and the well identified ills of sugar consumption. Every year more than 5.0 million people die due to diabetes and diabetes-associated diseases like cardiovascular, kidney disorder, liver cancer etc. This book describes the use of non-saccharide super sweet principles to counter such maladies. The readers will get an in-depth understanding of different kinds of sweeteners, molecular basis of sweetness, their general classification, plant source with photo-plates etc. The chapters explain different kinds of super-sweet principles. This book emphasizes on the propagation, cultivation and conservation of NSSS plants (NSSSP) and extraction of super sweet principles and granting of generally recognised as safe (GRAS) certificate to sweeteners. The concluding chapter describes the eco-physiological difference between saccharide super sweet and non saccharide sweet plants. The book also describes commercial production of selected potential Natural Super Sweeteners. This book will be of great interest to researchers, extension workers as well as postgraduate students in Food science nutrition, ayurveda, plant physiology, Unani, naturopathy, biochemistry and plant breeding. It would also be of interest to industry stakeholders in sweetener industry and alternative sweetener manufactures.

- Abstract
This volume contains the results of archaeological research carried out at Grotta Mora Cavorso, a fascinating cave in the still-pristine landscape of the Simbruini Mountains along the Upper Aniene River Valley, central Italy. The book is written by archaeologists for archaeologists, as well as for lovers of archaeology, history and speleology; it describes and critically discusses a wide range of scientific and anthropological analyses carried out over the last 15 years, while integrating them within the contemporary theoretical debate. The first of three volumes, it covers the Historic and Protohistoric periods of human occupation of the cave, revealing its complex and multi-layered use as a burial and ritual place, a possible monastic hermitage, stables and even a war refuge. This book serves to fill the gap in cave archaeology at both a local and wider geographical scale, while demonstrating the key importance of a previously neglected area, thus adding to the overall understanding of the use of caves in Mediterranean Europe.
