Search

The gravitational pull of a large number of asteroids perturbs a pulsar's motion to a degree that is detectable through precision timing of millisecond pulsars. The result is a low-frequency, correlated noise process, similar in form to the red timing noise known to affect canonical pulsars, or to the signal expected from a stochastic gravitational-wave background. Motivated by the observed fact that many millisecond pulsars are in binary systems, we describe the ways in which the presence of a binary companion to the pulsar would affect the signal produced by an asteroid belt. The primary effect of the companion is to destabilize the shortest-period orbits, cutting off the high-frequency component of the signal from the asteroid belt. We also discuss the implications of asteroid belts for gravitational-wave search efforts. Compared to the signal from a stochastic gravitational-wave background, asteroid belt noise has a similar frequency and amplitude, and is similarly independent of radio frequency, but is not correlated between different pulsars, which should allow the two kinds of signal to be distinguished., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. When galaxies merge, the supermassive black holes in their centers may form binaries and, during the process of merger, emit low-frequency gravitational radiation in the process. In this paper we consider the galaxy 3C66B, which was used as the target of the first multi-messenger search for gravitational waves. Due to the observed periodicities present in the photometric and astrometric data of the source of the source, it has been theorized to contain a supermassive black hole binary. Its apparent 1.05-year orbital period would place the gravitational wave emission directly in the pulsar timing band. Since the first pulsar timing array study of 3C66B, revised models of the source have been published, and timing array sensitivities and techniques have improved dramatically. With these advances, we further constrain the chirp mass of the potential supermassive black hole binary in 3C66B to less than $(1.65\pm0.02) \times 10^9~{M_\odot}$ using data from the NANOGrav 11-year data set. This upper limit provides a factor of 1.6 improvement over previous limits, and a factor of 4.3 over the first search done. Nevertheless, the most recent orbital model for the source is still consistent with our limit from pulsar timing array data. In addition, we are able to quantify the improvement made by the inclusion of source properties gleaned from electromagnetic data to `blind' pulsar timing array searches. With these methods, it is apparent that it is not necessary to obtain exact a priori knowledge of the period of a binary to gain meaningful astrophysical inferences., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. We present a new analysis of the profile data from the 47 millisecond pulsars comprising the 12.5-year data set of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav), which is presented in a parallel paper (Alam et al. 2021a; NG12.5). Our reprocessing is performed using "wideband" timing methods, which use frequency-dependent template profiles, simultaneous time-of-arrival (TOA) and dispersion measure (DM) measurements from broadband observations, and novel analysis techniques. In particular, the wideband DM measurements are used to constrain the DM portion of the timing model. We compare the ensemble timing results to NG12.5 by examining the timing residuals, timing models, and noise model components. There is a remarkable level of agreement across all metrics considered. Our best-timed pulsars produce encouragingly similar results to those from NG12.5. In certain cases, such as high-DM pulsars with profile broadening, or sources that are weak and scintillating, wideband timing techniques prove to be beneficial, leading to more precise timing model parameters by 10-15%. The high-precision, multi-band measurements of several pulsars indicate frequency-dependent DMs. Compared to the narrowband analysis in NG12.5, the TOA volume is reduced by a factor of 33, which may ultimately facilitate computational speed-ups for complex pulsar timing array analyses. We present time-of-arrival (TOA) measurements and timing models of 47 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) observed from 2004 to 2017 at the Arecibo Observatory and the Green Bank Telescope by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). The observing cadence was three to four weeks for most pulsars over most of this time span, with weekly observations of six sources. These data were collected for use in low-frequency gravitational wave searches and for other astrophysical purposes. We detail our observational methods and present a set of TOA measurements, based on "narrowband" analysis, in which many TOAs are calculated within narrow radio-frequency bands for data collected simultaneously across a wide bandwidth. A separate set of "wideband" TOAs will be presented in a companion paper. We detail a number of methodological changes compared to our previous work which yield a cleaner and more uniformly processed data set. Our timing models include several new astrometric and binary pulsar measurements, including previously unpublished values for the parallaxes of PSRs J1832-0836 and J2322+2057, the secular derivatives of the projected semi-major orbital axes of PSRs J0613-0200 and J2229+2643, and the first detection of the Shapiro delay in PSR J2145-0750. We report detectable levels of red noise in the time series for 14 pulsars. As a check on timing model reliability, we investigate the stability of astrometric parameters across data sets of different lengths. We report flux density measurements for all pulsars observed. Pulsar dispersion measures (DMs) have been used to model the electron density of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the Galactic disk as a plane-parallel medium, despite significant scatter in the DM-distance distribution and strong evidence for inhomogeneities in the ISM. We use a sample of pulsars with independent distance measurements to evaluate a model of the local ISM in the thick disk of the Galaxy that incorporates turbulent fluctuations, clumps, and voids in the electron density. The latter two components are required because $\sim 1/3$ of the lines of sight are discrepant from a strictly plane parallel model. A likelihood analysis for smooth components of the model yields a scale height $z_0=1.57^{+0.15}_{-0.14}$ kpc and a mid-plane density $n_0=0.015 \pm 0.001$ cm$^{-3}$. The scatter in the DM-distance distribution is dominated by clumps and voids but receives significant contributions from a broad spectrum of density fluctuations, such as a Kolmogorov spectrum. The model is used to identify lines of sight with outlier values of DM. Three of these pulsars, J1614$-$2230, J1623$-$0908, and J1643$-$1224, lie behind known HII regions, and the electron density model is combined with H$\alpha$ intensity data to constrain the filling factors and other substructure properties of the HII regions (Sh 2-7 and Sh 2-27). Gravitational scattering events, in which the path of an interstellar object is deflected by a pulsar or the solar system, give rise to reflex motion which can potentially be detected using pulsar timing. We determine the form of the timing signal expected from a gravitational scattering event, which is ramp-like and resembles the signal produced by a glitch or a gravitational wave burst with memory (BWM), and investigate the prospects for detecting such a signal using a pulsar timing array. The level of timing precision currently achieved for some millisecond pulsars makes it possible to detect objects as small as $10^{-10}$ solar masses, less than the mass of the dwarf planet Ceres, at impact parameters as large as 1 AU. The signals produced by gravitational scattering could provide independent constraints on models of dark matter involving asteroid-mass objects or subhalos, and should be considered as potential false positives in searches for BWMs., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. We report on the first detection of pulsed radio emission from a radio pulsar with the ALMA telescope. The detection was made in the Band-3 frequency range (85-101 GHz) using ALMA in the phased-array mode developed for VLBI observations. A software pipeline has been implemented to enable a regular pulsar observing mode in the future. We describe the pipeline and demonstrate the capability of ALMA to perform pulsar timing and searching. We also measure the flux density and polarization properties of the Vela pulsar (PSR J0835$-$4510) at mm-wavelengths, providing the first polarimetric study of any ordinary pulsar at frequencies above 32 GHz. Finally, we discuss the lessons learned from the Vela observations for future pulsar studies with ALMA, particularly for searches near the supermassive black hole in the Galactic Center, and the potential of using pulsars for polarization calibration of ALMA., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, published in ApJ letter

Precision pulsar timing can be used for a variety of astrophysical tests from the detection of gravitational waves to probing the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM). Here we present analyses of the noise contributions to pulsar timing residuals from continuous multi-hour observations of seven millisecond pulsars (MSPs). We present scintillation bandwidth measurements for all MSPs in the sample, some for the first time, and scintillation timescale measurements and lower limits for all MSPs for the first time. In addition, we present upper limits on the contribution of pulse phase jitter to the timing residual error for all MSPs. These long observations also allow us to constrain variations in dispersion measures (DMs) on hour-long timescales for several millisecond pulsars. We find that there are no apparent DM variations in any of the MSPs studied on these timescales as expected. In light of new radio telescopes such as the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), which will be able to time many pulsars for a short time each day, we search for differences in timing precisions from continuous TOAs and from equivalent length time-discontinuous TOAs. We find no differences in the precision for any MSP in our sample, as expected. We summarize our understanding of millisecond radio bursts from an extragalactic population of sources. FRBs occur at an extraordinary rate, thousands per day over the entire sky with radiation energy densities at the source about ten billion times larger than those from Galactic pulsars. We survey FRB phenomenology, source models and host galaxies, coherent radiation models, and the role of plasma propagation effects in burst detection. The FRB field is guaranteed to be exciting: new telescopes will expand the sample from the current ~80 unique burst sources (and a few secure localizations and redshifts) to thousands, with burst localizations that enable host-galaxy redshifts emerging directly from interferometric surveys. * FRBs are now established as an extragalactic phenomenon. * Only a few sources are known to repeat. Despite the failure to redetect other FRBs, they are not inconsistent with all being repeaters. * FRB sources may be new, exotic kinds of objects or known types in extreme circumstances. Many inventive models exist, ranging from alien spacecraft to cosmic strings but those concerning compact objects and supermassive black holes have gained the most attention. After a decade of great progress in understanding gas flow into, out of, and through the Milky Way, we are poised to merge observations with simulations to build a comprehensive picture of the multi-scale magnetized interstellar medium (ISM). These insights will also be crucial to four bold initiatives in the 2020s: detecting nanohertz gravitational waves with pulsar timing arrays (PTAs), decoding fast radio bursts (FRBs), cosmic B-mode detection, and imaging the Milky Way's black hole with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT)., Comment: 11 page, 6 figures, 47 references. Radio SETI experiments aim to test the hypothesis that extraterrestrial civilizations emit detectable signals from communication, propulsion, or other technologies. Birefringence in ionized, magnetized media is usually measured as Faraday rotation of linearly polarized radiation. However, pulses propagating through regions with very large Faraday rotation measures (RMs) can split into circularly polarized components with measurable differences in arrival times $\propto \nu^{-3}\, \rm RM$, where $\nu$ is the radio frequency. Differential refraction from gradients in DM (dispersion measure) and RM can contribute a splitting time $\propto \vert \mathbf{\nabla_{\perp}} \rm DM \vert \vert \mathbf{\nabla_{\perp}}\rm RM \vert\,\nu^{-5}$. Regardless of whether the emitted pulse is unpolarized or linearly polarized, net circular polarization will be measured when splitting is a significant fraction of the pulse width. However, the initial polarization may be inferable from the noise statistics of the bursts. Extreme multipath scattering that broadens pulses can mask splitting effects. We discuss particular cases such as the Galactic center magnetar, J1749$-$2900, and the repeating fast radio burst source, FRB 121102. Both lines of sight have $\rm RM \sim 10^5~\rm rad~m^{-2}$ that yields millisecond splittings at frequencies well below $\sim 1 \text{ GHz}$. We also consider the splitting of nanosecond shot pulses in giant pulses from the Crab pulsar and the minimal effects of birefringence on precision pulsar timing. FRB 121102, the only repeating fast radio burst (FRB) known to date, was discovered at 1.4 GHz and shortly after the discovery of its repeating nature, detected up to 2.4 GHz. Here we present three bursts detected with the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope at 4.85 GHz. All three bursts exhibited frequency structure on broad and narrow frequency scales. Using an autocorrelation function analysis, we measured a characteristic bandwidth of the small-scale structure of 6.4$\pm$1.6 MHz, which is consistent with the diffractive scintillation bandwidth for this line of sight through the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) predicted by the NE2001 model. These were the only detections in a campaign totaling 22 hours in 10 observing epochs spanning five months. The observed burst detection rate within this observation was inconsistent with a Poisson process with a constant average occurrence rate; three bursts arrived in the final 0.3 hr of a 2 hr observation on 2016 August 20. We therefore observed a change in the rate of detectable bursts during this observation, and we argue that boosting by diffractive interstellar scintillations may have played a role in the detectability. Understanding whether changes in the detection rate of bursts from FRB 121102 observed at other radio frequencies and epochs are also a product of propagation effects, such as scintillation boosting by the Galactic ISM or plasma lensing in the host galaxy, or an intrinsic property of the burst emission will require further observations., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. The second data release from the Gaia mission (Gaia DR2) includes, among its billion entries, as- trometric parameters for binary companions to a number of known pulsars, including white dwarf companions to millisecond pulsars and the non-degenerate components of so-called "black widow" and "redback" systems. We find 22 such counterparts in DR2, of which 12 have statistically sig- nificant measurements of parallax. These DR2 optical proper motions and parallaxes provide new measurements of the distances and transverse velocities of the associated pulsars. For the most part, the results agree with existing radio interferometric and pulsar timing-based astrometry, as well as other distance estimates based on photometry or associations, and for some pulsars they provide the best known distance and velocity estimates. In particular, two of these pulsars have no previous dis- tance measurement: PSR J1227$-$4853, for which Gaia measures a parallax of $0.62\pm 0.16$ mas, and PSR J1431$-$4715, with a Gaia parallax of $0.64\pm 0.16$ mas. Using the Gaia distance measurements, we find that dispersion measure-based distance estimates calculated using the NE2001 and YMW16 Galactic electron density models are on average slightly underestimated, which may be a selection effect due to the over-representation of pulsars at high Galactic latitudes in the present Gaia sample. While the Gaia DR2 results do not quite match the precision that can be achieved by dedicated pulsar timing or radio interferometry, taken together they constitute a small but important improvement to the pulsar distance scale, and the subset of millisecond pulsars with distances measured by Gaia may help improve the sensitivity of pulsar timing arrays to nanohertz gravitational waves., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures; machine-readable version of Table 2 (including Gaia IDs) available with LaTeX source

We present high-precision timing data over time spans of up to 11 years for 45 millisecond pulsars observed as part of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) project, aimed at detecting and characterizing low-frequency gravitational waves. The pulsars were observed with the Arecibo Observatory and/or the Green Bank Telescope at frequencies ranging from 327 MHz to 2.3 GHz. Most pulsars were observed with approximately monthly cadence, with six high--timing-precision pulsars observed weekly, and all were observed at widely separated frequencies at each observing epoch in order to fit for time-variable dispersion delays. We describe our methods for data processing, time-of-arrival (TOA) calculation, and the implementation of a new, automated method for removing outlier TOAs. We fit a timing model for each pulsar that includes spin, astrometric, and, if necessary, binary parameters, in addition to time-variable dispersion delays and parameters that quantify pulse-profile evolution with frequency. The new timing solutions provide three new parallax measurements, two new Shapiro delay measurements, and two new measurements of large orbital-period variations. We fit models that characterize sources of noise for each pulsar. We find that 11 pulsars show significant red noise, with generally smaller spectral indices than typically measured for non-recycled pulsars, possibly suggesting a different origin. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are used to search for long-wavelength gravitational waves (GWs) by monitoring a set of spin-stable millisecond pulsars. Most theoretical analyses assume that the relevant GW sources are much more distant from Earth than the pulsars comprising the array. Unlike ground- or solar system-based GW detectors, PTAs might well contain embedded GW sources. We derive the PTA response from sources at any distance, with a specific focus on GW bursts with memory (BWMs). We consider supernovae and compact binary mergers as potential Galactic BWM sources and evaluate the signature for an array with pulsars in globular clusters or in the Galactic center. The precise localization of the repeating fast radio burst (FRB 121102) has provided the first unambiguous association (chance coincidence probability $p\lesssim3\times10^{-4}$) of an FRB with an optical and persistent radio counterpart. We report on optical imaging and spectroscopy of the counterpart and find that it is an extended ($0.6^{\prime\prime}-0.8^{\prime\prime}$) object displaying prominent Balmer and [OIII] emission lines. Based on the spectrum and emission line ratios, we classify the counterpart as a low-metallicity, star-forming, $m_{r^\prime} = 25.1$ AB mag dwarf galaxy at a redshift of $z=0.19273(8)$, corresponding to a luminosity distance of 972 Mpc. From the angular size, the redshift, and luminosity, we estimate the host galaxy to have a diameter $\lesssim4$ kpc and a stellar mass of $M_*\sim4-7\times 10^{7}\,M_\odot$, assuming a mass-to-light ratio between 2 to 3$\,M_\odot\,L_\odot^{-1}$. Based on the H$\alpha$ flux, we estimate the star formation rate of the host to be $0.4\,M_\odot\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$ and a substantial host dispersion measure depth $\lesssim 324\,\mathrm{pc\,cm^{-3}}$. The net dispersion measure contribution of the host galaxy to FRB 121102 is likely to be lower than this value depending on geometrical factors. We show that the persistent radio source at FRB 121102's location reported by Marcote et al (2017) is offset from the galaxy's center of light by $\sim$200 mas and the host galaxy does not show optical signatures for AGN activity. If FRB 121102 is typical of the wider FRB population and if future interferometric localizations preferentially find them in dwarf galaxies with low metallicities and prominent emission lines, they would share such a preference with long gamma ray bursts and superluminous supernovae., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Published in ApJ Letters. We report on an effort to extract and monitor interstellar scintillation parameters in regular timing observations collected for the NANOGrav pulsar timing array. Scattering delays are measured by creating dynamic spectra for each pulsar and observing epoch of wide-band observations centered near 1500 MHz and carried out at the Green Bank Telescope and the Arecibo Observatory. The ~800-MHz wide frequency bands imply dramatic changes in scintillation bandwidth across the bandpass, and a stretching routine has been included to account for this scaling. For most of the 10 pulsars for which the scaling has been measured, the bandwidths scale with frequency less steeply than expected for a Kolmogorov medium. We find estimated scattering delay values that vary with time by up to an order of magnitude. The mean measured scattering delays are similar to previously published values and slightly higher than predicted by interstellar medium models. We investigate the possibility of increasing the timing precision by mitigating timing errors introduced by the scattering delays. For most of the pulsars, the uncertainty in the time of arrival of a single timing point is much larger than the maximum variation of the scattering delay, suggesting that diffractive scintillation remains only a negligible part of their noise budget., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. We analyze deterministic and random temporal variations in dispersion measure (DM) from the full three-dimensional velocities of pulsars with respect to the solar system, combined with electron-density variations on a wide range of length scales. Previous treatments have largely ignored the pulsar's changing distance while favoring interpretations involving the change in sky position from transverse motion. Linear trends in pulsar DMs seen over 5-10~year timescales may signify sizable DM gradients in the interstellar medium (ISM) sampled by the changing direction of the line of sight to the pulsar. We show that motions parallel to the line of sight can also account for linear trends, for the apparent excess of DM variance over that extrapolated from scintillation measurements, and for the apparent non-Kolmogorov scalings of DM structure functions inferred in some cases. Pulsar motions through atomic gas may produce bow-shock ionized gas that also contributes to DM variations. We discuss possible causes of periodic or quasi-periodic changes in DM, including seasonal changes in the ionosphere, annual variation of the solar elongation angle, structure in the heliosphere-ISM boundary, and substructure in the ISM. We assess the solar cycle's role on the amplitude of ionospheric and solar-wind variations. Interstellar refraction can produce cyclic timing variations from the error in transforming arrival times to the solar system barycenter. We apply our methods to DM time series and DM gradient measurements in the literature and assess consistency with a Kolmogorov medium. Most millisecond pulsars, like essentially all other radio pulsars, show timing errors well in excess of what is expected from additive radiometer noise alone. We show that changes in amplitude, shape and pulse phase for the millisecond pulsar J1713+0747 cause this excess error. These changes appear to be uncorrelated from one pulse period to the next. The resulting time of arrival variations are correlated across a wide frequency range and are observed with different backend processors on different days, confirming that they are intrinsic in origin and not an instrumental effect or caused by strongly frequency dependent interstellar scattering. Centroids of single pulses show an rms phase variation \approx 40 microsec, which dominates the timing error and is the same phase jitter phenomenon long known in slower spinning, canonical pulsars. We show that the amplitude modulations of single pulses are modestly correlated with their arrival time fluctuations. We also demonstrate that single-pulse variations are completely consistent with arrival time variations of pulse profiles obtained by integrating N pulses such that the arrival time error decreases proportional to 1/\sqrt{N}. We investigate methods for correcting times of arrival for these pulse shape changes, including multi-component TOA fitting and principal component analysis. These techniques are not found to improve the timing precision of the observations. We conclude that when pulse shape changes dominate timing errors, the timing precision of PSR J1713+0747 can be only improved by averaging over a larger number of pulses., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar scintillation, radio supernovae and orphan afterglows of gamma ray bursts. In addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of five seconds and greater. We investigate rotational spin noise (referred to as timing noise) in non-accreting pulsars: millisecond pulsars, canonical pulsars, and magnetars. Particular attention is placed on quantifying the strength and non-stationarity of timing noise in millisecond pulsars because the long-term stability of these objects is required to detect nanohertz gravitational radiation. We show that a single scaling law is sufficient to characterize timing noise in millisecond and canonical pulsars while the same scaling law underestimates the levels of timing noise in magnetars. The scaling law, along with a detailed study of the millisecond pulsar B1937+21, leads us to conclude that timing noise is latent in most millisecond pulsars and will be measurable in many objects when better arrival time estimates are obtained over long data spans. The sensitivity of a pulsar timing array to gravitational radiation is strongly affected by any timing noise. We conclude that detection of proposed gravitational wave backgrounds will require the analysis of more objects than previously suggested over data spans that depend on the spectra of both the gravitational wave background and of the timing noise. In order to study precession and interstellar magnetic field variations, we measured the polarized position angle of 81 pulsars at several-month intervals for four years. We show that the uncertainties in a single-epoch measurement of position angle is usually dominated by random pulse-to-pulse jitter of the polarized subpulses. Even with these uncertainties, we find that the position angle variations in 19 pulsars are significantly better fitted (at the 3 {\sigma} level) by a sinusoid than by a constant. Such variations could be caused by precession, which would then indicate periods of ~ (200 - 1300) d and amplitudes of ~(1 - 12) degrees. We narrow this collection to four pulsars that show the most convincing evidence of sinusoidal variation in position angle. Also, in a handful of pulsars, single discrepant position angle measurements are observed which may result from the line of sight passing across a discrete ionized, magnetized structure. We calculate the standard deviation of position angle measurements from the mean for each pulsar, and relate these to limits on precession and interstellar magnetic field variations., Comment: Accepted to APJ

PSR J0751+1807 is a millisecond pulsar in a circular 6 hr binary system with a helium white dwarf secondary. Through high precision pulse timing measurements with the Arecibo and Effelsberg radio telescopes, we have detected the decay of its orbit due to emission of gravitational radiation. This is the first detection of the relativistic orbital decay of a low-mass, circular binary pulsar system. The measured rate of change in orbital period, corrected for acceleration biases, is dP_b/dt=(-6.4+-0.9)x10^-14. Interpreted in the context of general relativity, and combined with measurement of Shapiro delay, it implies a pulsar mass of 2.1+-0.2 solar masses, the most massive pulsar measured. This adds to the emerging trend toward relatively high neutron star masses in neutron star--white dwarf binaries. Additionally, there is some evidence for an inverse correlation between pulsar mass and orbital period in these systems. Transient radio sources are necessarily compact and usually are the locations of explosive or dynamic events, therefore offering unique opportunities for probing fundamental physics and astrophysics. In addition, short-duration transients are powerful probes of intervening media owing to dispersion, scattering and Faraday rotation that modify the signals. While radio astronomy has an impressive record obtaining high time resolution, usually it is achieved in quite narrow fields of view. Consequently, the dynamic radio sky is poorly sampled, in contrast to the situation in the X-ray and gamma-ray bands. The SKA has the potential to change this situation, opening up new parameter space in the search for radio transients. We summarize the wide variety of known and hypothesized radio transients and demonstrate that the SKA offers considerable power in exploring this parameter space. Requirements on the SKA to search the parameter space include the abilities to (1) Make targeted searches using beamforming capability; (2) Conduct blind, all-sky surveys with dense sampling of the frequency-time plane in wide fields; (3) Sample the sky with multiple fields of view from spatially well-separated sites in order to discriminate celestial and terrestrial signals; (4) Utilize as much of the SKA's aggregate collecting area as possible in blind surveys, thus requiring a centrally condensed configuration; and (5) Localize repeating transient sources to high angular precision, requiring a configuration with long baselines, thus requiring collecting area in both a centrally condensed "core" array and sufficient area on long baselines., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures in 4 PostScript files; to appear in "Science with the Square Kilometer Array," eds. Our theory relates the secondary spectrum, the 2D power spectrum of the radio dynamic spectrum, to the scattered pulsar image in a thin scattering screen geometry. Recently discovered parabolic arcs in secondary spectra are generic features for media that scatter radiation at angles much larger than the rms scattering angle. Each point in the secondary spectrum maps particular values of differential arrival-time delay and fringe rate (or differential Doppler frequency) between pairs of components in the scattered image. Arcs correspond to a parabolic relation between these quantities through their common dependence on the angle of arrival of scattered components. Arcs appear even without consideration of the dispersive nature of the plasma. Arcs are more prominent in media with negligible inner scale and with shallow wavenumber spectra, such as the Kolmogorov spectrum, and when the scattered image is elongated along the velocity direction. The arc phenomenon can be used, therefore, to constrain the inner scale and the anisotropy of scattering irregularities for directions to nearby pulsars. Arcs are truncated by finite source size and thus provide sub micro arc sec resolution for probing emission regions in pulsars and compact active galactic nuclei. Multiple arcs sometimes seen signify two or more discrete scattering screens along the propagation path, and small arclets oriented oppositely to the main arc persisting for long durations indicate the occurrence of long-term multiple images from the scattering screen., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

We have made observations of 98 low-Galactic-latitude pulsars to measure pulse broadening caused by multipath propagation through the interstellar medium. Data were collected with the 305-m Arecibo telescope at four radio frequencies between 430 and 2380 MHz. We used a CLEAN-based algorithm to deconvolve interstellar pulse broadening from the measured pulse shapes. We employed two distinct pulse broadening functions (PBFs): PBF$_1$ is appropriate for a thin screen of scattering material between the Earth and a pulsar, while PBF$_2$ is appropriate for scattering material uniformly distributed along the line of sight from the Earth to a pulsar. We found that some observations were better fit by PBF$_1$ and some by PBF$_2$. Pulse broadening times ($\tau_d$) are derived from fits of PBFs to the data, and are compared with the predictions of a smoothed model of the Galactic electron distribution. Several lines of sight show excess broadening, which we model as clumps of high density scattering material. A global analysis of all available data finds that the pulse broadening scales with frequency, $\nu$, as $\taud \propto\nu^{-\alpha}$ where $\alpha\sim 3.9\pm 0.2$. This is somewhat shallower than the value $\alpha=4.4$ expected from a Kolmogorov medium, but could arise if the spectrum of turbulence has an inner cutoff at $\sim $300--800 km. A few objects follow particularly shallow scaling laws (the mean scaling index $\meanalpha \sim 3.1 \pm 0.1$ and $ \sim 3.8 \pm 0.2$ respectively for the case of PBF$_1$ and PBF$_2$), which may arise from large scale refraction or from the truncation of scattering screens transverse to the Earth--pulsar line of sight., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal; 32 pages, 11 figures

We describe a new and efficient technique which we call sideband or phase-modulation searching that allows one to detect short period binary pulsars in observations longer than the orbital period. The orbital motion of the pulsar during long observations effectively modulates the phase of the pulsar signal causing sidebands to appear around the pulsar spin frequency and its harmonics in the Fourier transform. For the majority of binary radio pulsars or Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), large numbers of sidebands are present, allowing efficient searches using Fourier transforms of short portions of the original power spectrum. Analysis of the complex amplitudes and phases of the sidebands can provide enough information to solve for the Keplerian orbital parameters. This technique is particularly applicable to radio pulsar searches in globular clusters and searches for coherent X-ray pulsations from LMXBs and is complementary to more standard ``acceleration'' searches., Comment: 22 pages. 8 figures. We study implications for the apparent alignment of the spin axes, proper-motions, and polarization vectors of the Crab and Vela pulsars. The spin axes are deduced from recent Chandra X-ray Observatory images that reveal jets and nebular structure having definite symmetry axes. The alignments indicate these pulsars were born either in isolation or with negligible velocity contributions from binary motions. We examine the effects of rotation and the conditions under which spin-kick alignment is produced for various models of neutron star kicks. If the kick is generated when the neutron star first forms by asymmetric mass ejection or/and neutrino emission, then the alignment requires that the protoneutron star possesses an original spin with period $P_s$ much less than the kick timescale, thus spin-averaging the kick forces. The kick timescale ranges from 100 ms to 10 s depending on whether the kick is hydrodynamically driven or neutrino-magnetic field driven. For hydrodynamical models, spin-kick alignment further requires the rotation period of an asymmetry pattern at the radius near shock breakout (>100 km) to be much less than ~100 ms; this is difficult to satisfy unless rotation plays a dynamically important role in the core collapse and explosion ($P_s\lo 1$ ms). Aligned kick and spin vectors are inherent to the slow process of asymmetric electromagnetic radiation from an off-centered magnetic dipole. We reassess the viability of this effect, correcting a factor of 4 error in Harrison and Tademaru's calculation that increases the size of the effect. To produce a kick velocity of order a few hundred km/s requires that the neutron star be born with an initial spin close to 1 ms and that spindown due to r-mode driven gravitational radiation be inefficient compared to standard magnetic braking., Comment: Small changes/additions; final version to be published in ApJ, Vol.549 (March 10, 2001)

G359.87+0.18 is an enigmatic object located 15' from Sgr A*. It has been variously classified as an extragalactic source, Galactic jet source, and young supernova remnant. We present new observations of G359.87+0.18 between 0.33 and 15 GHz and use these to argue that this source is an Faranoff-Riley II radio galaxy. We are able to place a crude limit on its redshift of z > 0.1. The source has a spectral index \alpha < -1 (S \propto \nu^\alpha), suggestive of a radio galaxy with a redshift z >~ 2. The scattering diameters of Sgr A* and several nearby OH masers (~ 1" at 1 GHz) indicate that a region of enhanced scattering is along the line of sight to the Galactic center. If the region covers the Galactic center uniformly, the implied diameter for a background source is at least 600" at 0.33 GHz, in contrast with the observed 20" diameter of G359.87+0.18. Using the scattering diameter of a nearby OH maser OH 359.762+0.120 and the widths of two, nearby, non-thermal threads, G0.08+0.15 and G359.79+0.17, we show that a uniform scattering region should cover G359.87+0.18. We therefore conclude that the Galactic center scattering region is inhomogeneous on a scale of 5' (~ 10 pc at a distance of 8.5 kpc). This scale is comparable to the size scale of molecular clouds in the Galactic center. We show that the crust-core interface in neutron stars acts as a potential barrier to the peripheral neutron vortices approaching the interface in the model in which these are coupled to the proton vortex clusters. This elementary barrier because of the interaction of vortex magnetic flux with the Meissner currents set up by the crustal magnetic field at the interface. The dominant part of the force is derived from to the cluster-interface interaction. As a result of the stopping of the continuous neutron vortex current through the interface, angular momentum is stored in the superfluid layers in the vicinity of the crust-core interface during the interglitch period. Discontinuous annihilation of proton vortices on the boundary restores the neutron vortex current and spins up the observable crust on short time-scales, leading to a glitch in the spin characteristics of a pulsar., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. The scattering diameters of Sgr A* and several nearby OH masers (~ 1" at 1 GHz) indicate that a region of enhanced scattering is along the line of sight to the Galactic center. We combine radio-wave scattering data and free-free emission and absorption measurements in a likelihood analysis that constrains the following parameters of the GC scattering region: The GC-scattering region separation, d; the angular extent of the region, \psi_l; the outer scale on which density fluctuations occur, l_0; and the gas temperature, T. The maximum likelihood estimates of these parameters are d = 133_{-80}^{+200} pc, 0.5 degrees <= \psi_l <~ 1 degrees, and (l_0/1 pc)^{2/3}T^{-1/2} = 10^{-7 +/- 0.8}. As host media for the scattering, we consider the photoionized surface layers of molecular clouds and the interfaces between molecular clouds and the 10^7 K ambient gas. We are unable to make an unambiguous determination, but we favor an interface model in which the scattering medium is hot (T ~ 10^6 K) and dense (n_e ~ 10 cm^{-3}). The GC scattering region produces a 1 GHz scattering diameter for an extragalactic source of 90", if the region is a single screen, or 180", if the region wraps around the GC, as appears probable. We modify the Taylor-Cordes model for the Galactic distribution of free electrons in order to include an explicit GC component. Pulsars seen through this region will have a dispersion measure of approximately 2000 pc cm^{-3}, of which 75% arises from the GC component. The scattering diameters of Sgr A* and several nearby OH masers (~ 1" at 1 GHz) indicate that a region of enhanced scattering is along the line of sight to the Galactic center. The scattering diameter of an extragalactic source seen through this scattering region is larger by the ratio (Sun-GC distance)/(GC-scattering region separation). This ratio could be a factor of a few, if the scattering region is far from the GC and only a random superposition with it, to more than 100, if the scattering region is within the GC. We have used the VLA to survey 10 (11) fields at 20 cm (6 cm) ranging from 7' to 137' from Sgr A*. Our objective was to identify extragalactic sources and measure their scattering diameters so as to constrain this ratio. In order to find sources within these fields, we have employed pdfCLEAN, an algorithm in which sources are identified in an image by comparing the intensity histogram of the image to that expected from a noise-only image. We found over 100 sources, with the faintest sources being 3 mJy. The average number of sources per field is approximately 10, though fields close to Sgr A* tend to contain fewer sources. In a companion paper we use this survey in assessing the likelihood that the scattering region is within the GC. A number of Galactic sources are included in our source catalog. We discuss the spin evolution of pulsars in the case where a superfluid component of the star is coupled to the observable crust on long, spindown timescales. The momentum transfer from the superfluid interior results in an apparent decay of the external torque and, after a dramatic increase, to an asymptotic decrease of the generic value of the braking index, e.g. $n=3$, to values $n\sim 2.5$ if the magnetic field of the star does not decay over its lifetime. In the case where an exponential decay of the magnetic field towards a residual value occurs, the star undergoes a spin-up phase after which it could emerge in the millisecond sector of the $P$-$\dot P$ diagram., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, Latex, uses aaspp4.sty; ApJ in press

We consider the precession of isolated neutron stars in which superfluid is not pinned to the stellar crust perfectly. In the case of perfect pinning, Shaham (1977) showed that there are no slowly oscillatory, long-lived modes. When the assumption of perfect pinning is relaxed, new modes are found that can be long-lived, but are expected to be damped rather than oscillatory, unless the drag force on moving superfluid vortex lines has a substantial component perpendicular to the direction of relative motion. The response of a neutron star to external torques, such as the spindown torque, is also treated. We report multifrequency Very Long Baseline Array observations of twelve active galactic nuclei seen toward the Galactic anticenter. All of the sources are at |b| < 10 degrees and seven have |b| < 0.5 degrees. Our VLBA observations can detect an enhancement in the angular broadening of these sources due to an extended H II disk, if the orientation of the H II disk in the outer Galaxy is similar to that of the H I disk. Such an extended H II disk is suggested by the C IV absorption in a quasar's spectrum, the appearance of H I disks of nearby spiral galaxies, and models of Ly-alpha cloud absorbers and the Galactic fountain. We detect eleven of the twelve sources at one or more frequencies; nine of the sources are compact and suitable for an angular broadening analysis. A preliminary analysis of the observed angular diameters suggests that the H II disk does not display considerable warping or flaring and does not extend to large Galactocentric distances (R >~ 100 kpc). We use radio-wave scattering data to constrain the distribution of ionized gas in the outer Galaxy. Like previous models, our model for the H II disk includes parameters for the radial scale length and scale height of the H II, but we allow the H II disk to warp and flare. Our model also includes the Perseus arm. We use a likelihood analysis on 11 extragalactic sources and 7 pulsars. Scattering in the Perseus arm is no more than 60% of the level contributed by spiral arms in the inner Galaxy, equivalent to a 1 GHz scattering diameter of 1.5 mas. Our analysis favors an unwarped, nonflaring disk with a 1 kpc scale height, though this may reflect the non-uniform and coarse coverage provided by the available data. The lack of a warp indicates that VLBI observations near 1 GHz with an orbiting station having baseline lengths of a few Earth diameters will not be affected by interstellar scattering at Galactic latitudes |b| ~ 15 degrees. The radial scale length is 15--20 kpc, but the data cannot distinguish between a gradual decrease in the electron density and a truncated distribution. We favor a truncated one, because we associate the scattering with massive star formation, which is also truncated near 20 kpc. The distribution of electron density turbulence decreases more rapidly with Galactocentric distance than does the hydrogen distribution. Alternate ionizing and turbulent agents---the intergalactic ionizing flux and satellite galaxies passing through the disk---do not contribute significantly to scattering.
