61. A comprehensive review of nondermatophyte mould onychomycosis: Epidemiology, diagnosis and management.

Abstract

Nondermatophyte moulds (NDMs) are widely distributed and can be detected in association with mycotic nails; however, sometimes it can be challenging to establish the role of NDMs in the pathogenesis of onychomycosis (i.e. causative vs. contaminant). In studies where the ongoing invasive presence of NDMs is confirmed through repeat cultures, the global prevalence of NDMs in onychomycosis patients is estimated at 6.9% with the 3 most common genus being: Aspergillus, Scopulariopsis and Fusarium. NDM onychomycosis can, in many cases, appear clinically indistinguishable from dermatophyte onychomycosis. Clinical features suggestive of NDMs include proximal subungual onychomycosis with paronychia associated with Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp. and Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, as well as superficial white onychomycosis in a deep and diffused pattern associated with Aspergillus and Fusarium. Longitudinal streaks seen in patients with distal and lateral onychomycosis may serve as an additional indicator. For diagnosis, light microscopic examination should demonstrate fungal filaments consistent with an NDM with at least two independent isolations in the absence of a dermatophyte; the advent of molecular testing combined with histological assessment may serve as an alternative with improved sensitivity and turnover time. In most instances, antifungal susceptibility testing has limited value. Information on effective treatments for NDM onychomycosis is relatively scarce, unlike the situation in the study of dermatophyte onychomycosis. Terbinafine and itraconazole therapy (continuous and pulsed) appear effective to varying extents for treating onychomycosis caused by Aspergillus, Fusarium or Scopulariopsis. 68. Pedagogically Appropriate Integration of Informational Technology in an Elementary Preservice Teacher Education Program.

Abstract

This paper describes ways in which preservice students in an elementary education four-year degree program at the University of Regina (Saskatchewan) learn about and learn with information technology. Students learn specific skills and concepts related to informational technology (IT) and its uses and application to the classroom in specific ways at different stages of the program. Also discussed in the paper is the evolving faculty inservice training to reskill or retool instructors to enable them to provide meaningful IT experiences for students. One particular experiment is outlined, an experiment that addressed the content of and response to a specific set of five IT modules implemented in order to ensure that all students complete their education degrees with a mandatory set of technology concepts and skills, in a program where there is no mandatory computers in education class. Ways that students who have taken the five modules are using IT in pedagogically-appropriate ways are outlined. The paper also describes a vision of the IT future for faculty and students. Abstract

This dissertation analyses an ethnographic study of how people in a peri-urban, agricultural village in western Kenya have responded to the questions of who will care for children, and how, when those children’s parents, or other primary caregivers, have died. It examines the practical and ideological implications of wide-scale orphaning among a population that has experienced increased numbers and proportions of orphaned children mainly due to HIV/AIDS, as well as the gradual depletion of resources in terms of both the availability of middle-aged adults and the security of economic livelihoods. The research explores how specific caring relationships, as well as general sociality, have been challenged, adapted, and affirmed or rejected normatively and practically in this context. The research revealed a high degree of questioning in people’s efforts to forge responses to children’s orphaned situations. Rarely was there unambiguous consensus in the study context concerning what should be done in response to children’s orphanhood in light of families’ diminished livelihood capacities. More broadly, there was a distinctive concern with how such situations might be appraised in moral terms. The analysis therefore focuses on three main concerns, including: how to understand uncertainty as a condition of life, and the implications of this; how a shared perspective of uncertainty has spurred a concern with morality in the study context, and specifically galvanised a moral economy of kinship; and how the concern with morality affected what was deemed at stake in people’s lives.

75. Using Standardized Test Results To Assess Student Learning.

Abstract

One method used by Alabama's Snead State Community College (SSCC) to measure student learning is to compare student scores on placement exams, taken before core course work, to results from evaluation exams, taken upon completion of core courses. All incoming freshmen are required to provide scores from American College Testing (ACT) assessment tests or take the ACT Assessment of Student Skills for Entry Transfer (ASSET) placement tests for English and mathematics. Following completion of academic core classes common to all associate degree programs, student performance is then measured by the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) tests. The decile rankings of SSCC students' entry scores are determined in relation to those of their peers from community colleges nationwide and are then compared with decile rankings on the CAAP test. The data are arranged in a four-quadrant grid according to the following criteria: quadrant one students score low on both entry and exit, quadrant two students score low on entry but high on exit, quadrant three students score high on entry and lower on exit, and quadrant four students score high on both exams. In a sample analysis of SSCC students, a total of 44% of SSCC students showed positive change (quadrant two), 22% maintained their rankings (quadrants one and four), and 34% showed negative change (quadrant three). Finally, these data are analyzed to determine common factors among student quadrants to provide college planners with data to improve student success. (MAB)

The bibliography and pathfinder include a number of different kinds of resources including monographs, indexes, journals, and organizations. A pathfinder is a guide to help people access library materials on a particular subject by describing the resources and giving instructions on how to find and use them. This pathfinder is primarily designed to enable teachers to help elementary school youngsters understand philosophy; however, many of the ideas presented in the publications in the pathfinder also apply to teaching philosophy in junior and senior high schools or the home. Abstract

In light of the escalating climate crisis, there is a pressing need for a significant shift in how we design the built environment to effectively confront global challenges. Natural systems have inspired scientists, architects, and engineers for centuries; however, conventional biomimetic approaches often focus on superficial aspects, disregarding the underlying complexities. While this approach may lead to a more efficient outcome, it operates under the assumption that the organism functions exclusively within the confines of human knowledge, which are inherently limited by established epistemological and technological systems. This study advocates for a departure from conventional biomimetic approaches and asks the mechanisms of the biological system to inform the process of translation, as opposed to simply defining the outcome. By relinquishing control to material properties and dynamic processes of the biological analog, this study explores the generation of novel, bio-inspired dynamic formworks through non-linear fabrication processes. Specifically, it investigates the thermal properties of accessible building materials, enabling them to respond to environmental conditions without sophisticated technology or human intervention. By embracing chance and unpredictability, translated behaviors are granted the same influence as human intervention. Drawing inspiration from adaptive plant physiology, this research seeks to inspire innovative, climate-responsive methodological practices within broader architectural systems. 84. Application of polymer ageing models to cable geometry and time-to-failure distributions

Abstract

Polymer ageing models predict the working lifetime of polymeric insulation in terms of the electrical and thermal stresses to which it is subjected. Two such models are investigated in this thesis and are found to be mathematically similar even though they are based on different mechanisms for the way in which an electric field accelerates the ageing process. It is shown that both models can successfully fit characteristic time-to-failure data from ageing experiments involving thin films. A new method is developed to allow the ageing models to be applied to cable insulation, where the field and temperature are not spatially constant. This method is used to apply one of the models to characteristic lifetime data from experiments involving cables. The fits to data are found to be good, and resulting parameter values are used as the basis for a discussion of the possible effects of specimen volume on ageing. The distribution of failure times observed when thin films and cable insulation are aged at a given experimental condition has also been investigated. This has been carried out using distributions of the activation free energy of ageing within one of the ageing models. It is established that small changes in the minimum activation energy from specimen to specimen could be responsible for the observed failure statistics. Changes in the activation energy distributions with ageing condition suggest that ageing may involve conformational re-arrangements of chain segments in the crystalline-amorphous interface. This is in broad agreement with the conclusions of other workers.

Abstract

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. Neither the statute nor its implementing regulations explicitly define “sex” to include discrimination on the basis of menstruation or related conditions such as perimenopause and menopause. This textual absence has caused confusion over whether Title IX must be interpreted to protect students and other community members from all types of sex-based discrimination. It also calls into question the law's ability to break down systemic sex-based barriers related to menstruation in educational spaces. Absent an interpretation that there is explicit Title IX coverage, menstruation will continue to cause some students to miss instruction. Other students may be denied access to a menstrual product or a restroom as needed and face health consequences. They also may be teased and bullied after menstrual blood visibly leaks onto their clothes. Employees, who are also covered by Title IX, may be fired for damaging school property as a result of such leaks. People in perimenopause may be denied reasonable modifications like bathroom access, water, or temperature control. Collectively, this creates an educational system that prevents students, faculty, or employees from fully participating in educational institutions and causes harm. On July 12, 2022, the U.S. Department of Education (“DOE”) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking “to better align the Title IX regulatory requirements with Title IX's nondiscrimination mandate, and to clarify the scope and application of Title IX and [schools' obligations] to provide an educational environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex, including through responding to incidents of sex discrimination.” On September 12, 2022, the Authors submitted the below Comment asking the DOE to modify existing regulations to cover menstruation-related discrimination in three way

91. A clustering approach to reduce computational expense in land surface models: a case study using JULES vn5.9

Abstract

Land surface models such as JULES (the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator) are usually run on a regular, rectilinear grid, resulting in gridded outputs for variables such as soil moisture and water fluxes. Here we investigate a method of clustering grid cells with similar characteristics together in JULES. Clustering grid cells has the potential to reduce computational expense as well as providing an alternative to tiling approaches for capturing sub-grid heterogeneity. In this study, we cluster grid cells exclusively in the land surface part of modelling, i.e., separate from river routing. We compare gridded and clustered soil moisture outputs from JULES with measurements from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH) COSMOS-UK network and show that the clustering approach can model soil moisture well while reducing computational expense. However, soil moisture results are dependent on the characteristics used to create the clusters. We investigate the effect of using clusters on predicted river flows, and compare routed JULES outputs with NRFA gauge data in the catchment. We show that less expensive JULES clustered outputs give similar river flow results to standard gridded outputs when routed at the grid resolution, and are able to match observed river flow better than gridded outputs when routed at higher resolution.

Abstract

Gene functional descriptions offer a crucial line of evidence for candidate genes underlying trait variation. Conversely, plant responses to environmental cues represent important resources to decipher gene function and subsequently provide molecular targets for plant improvement through gene editing. However, biological roles of large proportions of genes across the plant phylogeny are poorly annotated. Here we describe the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) Plant Gene Atlas, an updateable data resource consisting of transcript abundance assays spanning 18 diverse species. To integrate across these diverse genotypes, we analyzed expression profiles, built gene clusters that exhibited tissue/condition specific expression, and tested for transcriptional response to environmental queues. We discovered extensive phylogenetically constrained and condition-specific expression profiles for genes without any previously documented functional annotation. Such conserved expression patterns and tightly co-expressed gene clusters let us assign expression derived additional biological information to 64 495 genes with otherwise unknown functions. The ever-expanding Gene Atlas resource is available at JGI Plant Gene Atlas (https://plantgeneatlas.jgi.doe.gov) and Phytozome (https://phytozome.jgi.doe.gov/), providing bulk access to data and user-specified queries of gene sets. Combined, these web interfaces let users access differentially expressed genes, track orthologs across the Gene Atlas plants, graphically represent co-expressed genes, and visualize gene ontology and pathway enrichments.

Abstract

The cellular localisation of placental CRH has previously been investigated using immunocytochemistry, but results are conflicting. The results discussed in this thesis are in agreement with the more recent of these studies. Immunoreactive CRH was localised to the syncytiotrophoblasts of the placenta and to the amnion, chorion and decidua throughout gestation. These studies are the first to localise POMC gene expression within the placenta by in situ hybridisation. In combination with immunocytochemistry both mRNA transcribed from the gene, and the gene product translated from the mRNA can be identified. The results of these studies provide very strong evidence that POMC is synthesised in cytotrophoblasts in the first trimester, and syncytiotrophoblasts thereafter. In addition both POMC mRNA and immunopositive staining were found in amnion and chorion. The placental ACTH content increased with advancing gestation, and this finding was supported by both an increase in immunostaining and POMC gene expression over this period. Placental ACTH content, immunostaining and POMC gene expression were unaffected by labour, the administration of prostaglandins in the first trimester and at term, or by the administration of mifepristone in the first trimester. Thus both CRH and ACTH appear to be constitutively present in the placenta throughout gestation. These results suggest that these peptides may have other roles during pregnancy rather than being simply related to parturition. They contribute to the normal endocrine environment of the placenta and may have a 'housekeeping' role through pregnancy. In addition, they may also enter the fetal circulation influencing its hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and may potentially affect the maturation of other important organs.

Abstract

This exploratory study presents Greenland as a case of a peripheral destination that complicates and contradicts global definitions of sustainable tourism. Using empirical data that consists of 39 semi-structured interviews, the author employs an inductive approach to discuss the conceptualisation of sustainable tourism according to local stakeholders in Greenland. The key points of conflict surrounding sustainable tourism in Greenland are identified and discussed, with a focus on how local stakeholders contradict each other, and on how the debates prevalent at the local scale can inform tourism development in other peripheral places. The paper contributes to academic literature by offering a deeper understanding of how core-periphery dynamics can influence perceptions of and priorities for sustainable tourism in peripheral places. 99. The treatment of plantar warts using microwave—A review of 85 consecutive cases in the United States.

Abstract

Background: Plantar warts (verrucae plantaris) are a common source of pain for patients and are often refractory to treatment. Previous work has shown a high clearance rate of verrucae using a surface‐based microwave device (Swift®). Aims: To assess the efficacy, defined as the complete visible clearance of warts, in patients with verrucae plantaris receiving microwave treatment. Patients: We undertook a retrospective review and identified records of 85 patients who underwent a course of microwave treatment at a single US‐based podiatry centre. Efficacy was analyzed on the basis on intention‐to‐treat. Results: In patients who received ≥1 session there was a complete clearance rate of 60.0% (51/85) (intention‐to‐treat; 59 patients completed treatment, 26 lost to follow‐up) and 86.4% (51/59) per treatment completion; no significant differences in clearance rates of children and adults were observed (61.0% [25/41] vs. 59.1% [26/44]). There were 31 patients who received three sessions of microwave therapy with a clearance rate of 71.0% (22/31) as per intention‐to‐treat (27 patients completed treatment, 4 lost to follow‐up). An average of 2.3 sessions (SD: 1.1; range: 1–6) was required for the complete clearance of plantar warts. Complete clearance was also observed in some patients with recalcitrant warts following additional treatment sessions (42.9% [3/7]). A significant reduction in wart related pain was reported for all patients undergoing treatment. Some patients continued to report a reduced amount of pain post‐therapy compared with pretherapy.
