59. Calculation of Attachment Energies and Relative Volume Growth Rates As an Aid to Polymorph Prediction

Abstract

We calculate the morphologies of a number of the observed and hypothetical crystal structures of paracetamol, parabanic acid, and pyridine using the attchment energy model. We also estimate the relative growth volumes of the different polymorphs. This quantity is found to exhibit a large variation, which is generally well correlated with the attachment energy of teh most dominant face of each polymorph, thus indicating how one face controls crystal growth. Such calculations suggest which thermodynamically feasible crystal structures could have a kinetic advantage in crystal growth. The application of the present results to polymorph prediction is discussed.

68. Multiple target tracking and target attitude determination with a scanning laser radar

Abstract

A scanning laser radar that can acquire and track single or multiple targets has recently been developed. Scan patterns have been designed for acquisition and tracking of one or more targets using a narrow laser beam. A synchronously scanned transmitter-receiver is used to acquire and track targets anywhere in a 376 x 376 element raster covering a 30 x 30 deg field. All scan patterns are electronically programmed, and the system automatically acquires and tracks the target or targets without the aid of an operator. The maximum tracking rate is 1.0 deg/sec (10.0 deg/sec) when used with a 1 kHz (10 kHz) scan rate. The estimated free space range against passive cooperative targets (corner cube reflectors) is 30 nautical miles. The laser radar has an accuracy of 10 cm (range) and 0.05 deg (angle). The developmental system is relatively small (1.5 cu ft), lightweight (60 lbs) and low-power-consuming (60 W).

Abstract

Background: Accelerated nucleation, supersaturation of bile, and biliary stasis are known to be key factors in cholesterol gallstone formation. The mechanisms through which these factors interact to form stones are still incompletely understood. Among the proteins now known to be present in bile are several components of the fibrinolytic system: tissue plasminogen activator, urokinase-like plasminogen activator, and plasminogen activator inhibitors 1 and 2. The concentrations of plasminogen activator inhibitors 1 and 2 in gallbladder bile are increased in patients with gallstones. The aim of this study was to determine whether these fibrinolytic system proteins act as pro-nucleating agents for cholesterol gallstone formation. Methods: Nucleation assays were done on gallbladder bile from eight cholesterol stone patients and eight control patients. The effects of tissue plasminogen activator, urokinase-like plasminogen activator, and plasminogen activator inhibitors 1 and 2 on cholesterol crystal appearance time (CCAT) were tested, by direct observation using polarizing microscopy, after measurement of biliary lipids and calculation of cholesterol saturation indices. Results: There was no significant difference in cholesterol saturation indices between bile that nucleated and bile that did not (mean, 2.0 ± 1.5 versus 1.8 ± 0.5). When all samples in which nucleation occurred were compared, tissue plasminogen activator significantly shortened CCAT median from 4.75 days (range, 2-21) to 3.5 days (2.5-18) (P < 0.05). This was similar to the effect of fibronectin (3.75 days; range, 2-20), a known pro-nucleator used as a nucleation accelerating control (P < 0.05). None of the other fibrinolytic system proteins significantly accelerated CCAT. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that tissue plasminogen activator may act as a pro-nucleating agent for cholesterol gallstone formation in gallbladder bile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sixty-three-year-old man was found to have a 6.5 cm abdominal aortic aneurysm on routine follow-up six months after renal transplantation. Renal function did not deteriorate over the operative period. In such circumstances, the operation should be designed to minimize the period of renal ischemia, but specific techniques to maintain normotensive renal perfusion are not required.
