52. Alkaline electrolysis for green hydrogen production:techno-economic analysis of temperature influence and control

Abstract

To mitigate climate change, a stronger reliance on renewable energy sources is foreseen, and Power-to-Hydrogen systems can be adopted to minimize curtailment losses derived from the intermittent nature of wind and solar power. Among different alternatives, alkaline water electrolysis is the most mature process for hydrogen production using sustainable electricity as its main energy source. The mathematical modelling of the alkaline electrolysis process is a crucial tool to improve green hydrogen production, energy conversion efficiency, sizing (model-based design) and thermal energy management. Although several studies have investigated alkaline electrolysis modelling, these analyses often neglect property variations along the stack area and its economic implications. In this work, the need for increasing the modelling complexity in system models by introducing a one-dimensional model of the alkaline electrolyzer cell/stack is investigated. With this, several operation parameter variations can be modelled, and among these, the internal temperature variation plays a crucial role in both technical and economic aspects. Results show that efficiency could vary between 58-70% while the Levelized cost of hydrogen is within the range of 1.3-1.6 €/kg, when various inlet-outlet temperature differences are considered. Furthermore, from both technical and economic aspects, the optimal temperature control of alkaline electrolysis is to maintain a very low-temperature difference (~1°C), from inlet to outlet, controllable with the alteration of the electrolyte flow rate.

Abstract

Considering the increasing penetration of variable and non-dispatchable renewable energy in worldwide electricity mixes, an increasing requirement for energy storage capacity is foreseen in order to decouple production and demand. Electrochemical battery systems and/or hydrogen systems (electrolysers and fuel cells) provide a suitable alternative to be implemented in local small-to-medium scale microgrid environments. The research aims to address the optimal sizing of an Energy Storage System composed of lead acid batteries and a hydrogen loop (electrolyser, compressed storage tank and fuel cell) within an actual hybrid renewable microgrid located in Huelva, Spain. The energy storage systems must couple the variable production of 15 kWp of solar PV systems and a 3 kWnom horizontal axis wind turbine to a real monitored residential load, which present a time-shifted power demand. By making use of previously developed and validated component models, three storage configurations (battery-only, hydrogen-only and hybrid batteryhydrogen) are assessed via parametrical variation in yearly simulations in hourly timestep, analysing the Loss of Load (LL) and Over Production (OP) output values. The results provide quantitative information regarding the optimal storage system capacity in each configuration providing valuable insight in terms of sizing of the energy storage systems in the long-term.

Abstract

The paradigm of highly integrated cross sector energy systems grants several opportunities for welcoming high shares of renewable energy sources in meeting the energy demands of current urban districts. A key asset towards such challenge lies in the progressive deployment of more distributed energy systems, achieving configurations tailored to the needs of the local communities lying in their physical proximities. This study analyses the case study of a small town situated in central Italy, which energy supply already features a set of distributed and cross-sector energy resources such as a district heating network fed by a 1.2 MWe natural gas engine and more than 30 MWp of non-controllable renewables. The city energy systems are modelled in the analysis tool EnergyPLAN in order to analyse the technical feasibility of introducing different technological options aimed at reducing the polluting emissions generated in meeting different energy related needs of the district.

Abstract

A major contribution to our society’s environmental impact lies in meeting the energy needs of buildings, specifically in areas where the supply of such commodities is based on high carbon-emitting fossil fuels (oil/coal). This study analyses a mixed-use urban district situated in Kazakhstan. The district features a set of households together with three schools, a hospital, and several office buildings. The heating energy needs of the city are currently entirely met by coal-fired solutions; thus, this study wishes to investigate the feasibility of novel more sustainable technological approaches. A set of scenarios is modeled by means of the EnergyPLAN analysis tool where the technical feasibility of a district heating network is analyzed in combination with both greener fossil fired solutions and renewables.

Abstract

6 p Electrónico, One of the main challenges related to the renewable energy labour market is that of human capital and as a consequence the educational profile of future employees is of paramount importance. Unfortunately, the skill level gained at University does not always fit with the practical needs of industry thus reducing the benefit-cost ratio of new employees and slowing down the programme aims at improving the renewable energy engineering curriculum at different university levels in several Universities of Latin America and Europe. In order to better appreciate the potential impact of the project, a survey on the labour market need for specialists with enhanced knowledge and skills in renewable and sustainable energy technologies has been conducted in the related EU and Latin America countries. More precisely, 60 organizations have been interviewed and almost 70% of them are interested in employing engineers with enhanced knowledge on renewable energy in the next three years. The analysis has shown significant discrepancies between EU and Latin American organizations. In fact, while future employees in EU countries will be mainly related to solar energy and management, the former together with wind and biomass will represent the main renewable energy working sector in Latin American countries. Moreover, MSc level will be the most demanded in EU while bachelor education seems to satisfy the future industry requirements in Latin America. Despite each country having its own needs, the research carried out under this EU project confirms the potential of renewable energy education on the global labour market in the near future.
