Marine, and more recently, freshwater sponges are known to harbor unique microbial symbiotic communities relative to the surrounding water; however, our understanding of the microbial ecology and diversity of freshwater sponges is vastly limited compared to those of marine sponges. Here we analyzed the microbiomes of three freshwater sponge species: Radiospongilla crateriformis, Eunapius fragilis, and Trochospongilla horrida, across four sites in western North Carolina, U.S.A. Our results support recent work indicating that freshwater sponges indeed harbor a distinct microbiome composition compared to the surrounding water and that these varied across sampling site indicating both environmental and host factors in shaping this distinct community. We also sampled sponges at one site over 3 months and observed that divergence in the microbial community between sponge and water occurs at least several weeks after sponges emerge for the growing season and that sponges maintain a distinct community from the water as the sponge tissue degrades. Bacterial taxa within the Gammproteobacteria, Alphproteobacteria, Bacteroidota (Flavobacteriia in particular), and Verrucomicrobia, were notable as enriched in the sponge relative to the surrounding water across sponge individuals with diverging microbial communities from the water. These results add novel information on the assembly and maintenance of microbial communities in an ancient metazoan host and is one of few published studies on freshwater sponge microbial symbiont communities. This study explored the public's response to the digital brand launch of the Seattle Kraken. Informed by agenda-setting theory and through content and social media analyses, the study identified the initial digital sentiment around the brand and the reach of the virtual conversations. The Kraken were able to encourage favorable conversation about the team by setting the agenda and encouraging consumers to engage with content at specific times during launch. In the first hour after brand launch, consumers focused conversation on the team, the logo and color scheme, and the effectiveness of the launch video. In the following 24 hr, the conversation remained positive and focused on how the brand positively represented the city and region. Through agenda setting, the Seattle Kraken were able to effectively launch their new brand while also setting the stage for positive brand-association development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the phase 3 RESONATE study, ibrutinib demonstrated superior progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and overall response rate (ORR) compared with ofatumumab in relapsed/refractory CLL patients with high-risk prognostic factors. We report updated results from RESONATE in these traditionally chemotherapy resistant high-risk genomic subgroups at a median follow-up of 19 months. Mutations were detected by Foundation One Heme Panel. Baseline mutations in the ibrutinib arm included TP53 (51%), SF3B1 (31%), NOTCH1 (28%), ATM (19%) and BIRC3 (14%). Median PFS was not reached, with 74% of patients randomized to ibrutinib alive and progression-free at 24 months. The improved efficacy of ibrutinib vs ofatumumab continues in all prognostic subgroups including del17p and del11q. No significant difference within the ibrutinib arm was observed for PFS across most genomic subtypes, although a subset carrying both TP53 mutation and del17p had reduced PFS compared with patients with neither abnormality. Reduced PFS or OS was not evident in patients with only del17p. PFS was significantly better for ibrutinib-treated patients in second-line vs later lines of therapy. The robust clinical activity of ibrutinib continues to show ongoing efficacy and acceptable safety consistent with prior reports, independent of various known high-risk mutations.

Increasingly more students with disabilities, including autistic or otherwise neurodiverse students, are studying for degrees in STEM field subjects. In recent years, there has been an increased effort from the geoscience education community to make teaching more accessible and inclusive to these students. However, much of the literature on this topic lacks the voice of the individuals these practices aim to serve. This, combined with the medical, deficit-based understanding of autism typically presented in the literature, has resulted in the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes, along with recommendations that may not actually serve as best practice. Here we present a more accurate and holistic explanation of what autism actually is, using our lived experiences as autistic geoscientists. We then outline a comprehensive framework for best supporting autistic and neurodiverse geoscience students, with a focus on field-based learning. This framework includes three pillars: (a) develop effective communication pathways with autistic students, (b) presume competence and include autistic students in the planning of their own accommodations, and (c) employ strategies for expectation management. We also touch on the importance of recognizing the sensory processing aspects of autism spectrum conditions and suggest strategies for minimizing these difficulties in a field environment. By centering autistic voices in the discussion of how to support autistic geoscience students, we hope to change the narrative of inclusion for this diverse, but significant population.

Coral reef sponges efficiently take up particulate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the water column and release compounds such as nucleosides, amino acids, and other dissolved metabolites to the surrounding reef via their exhalent seawater, but the influence of this process on reef picoplankton and nutrient processing is relatively unexplored. Here we examined the impact of sponge exhalent on the reef picoplankon community and subsequent alterations to the reef dissolved metabolite pool. We exposed reef picoplankton communities to a sponge exhalent water mixture (Niphates digitalis and Xestospongia muta) or filtered reef seawater (control) in closed, container-based dark incubations. We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing and flow cytometry-based cell counts to examine the picoplankton community and metabolomics and other analyses to examine the dissolved metabolite pool. The initial sponge exhalent was enriched in adenosine, inosine, chorismate, humic-like and amino acid-like components, and ammonium. Following 48 h of exposure to sponge exhalent, the picoplankton differed in composition, were reduced in diversity, showed doubled (or higher) growth efficiencies, and harbored increased copiotrophic and denitrifying taxa (Marinomonas, Pontibacterium, Aliiroseovarius) compared to control, reef-water based incubations. Alongside these picoplankton alterations, the sponge treatments, relative to seawater controls, had decreased adenosine, inosine, tryptophan, and ammonium, metabolites that may support the observed higher picoplankton growth efficiencies. Sponge treatments also had a net increase in several monosaccharides and other metabolites including anthranilate, riboflavin, nitrite, and nitrate. Our work demonstrates a link between sponge exhalent-associated metabolites and the picoplankton community, with exhalent water supporting an increased abundance of efficient, copiotrophic taxa that catabolize complex nutrients. The copiotrophic taxa were often different from those observed in previous algae and coral studies. These results have implications for better understanding the multifaceted role of sponges on picoplankton biomass with subsequent potential impacts to coral and other planktonic feeders in oligotrophic reef environments. Introduction: Early administration of antibiotics for open fractures reduces serious bone and soft tissue infections. The effectiveness of antibiotics in reducing these infections is time-dependent, with various surgical associations recommending administration within one hour of injury, or within one hour of patient arrival to the emergency department (ED). The extent to which prehospital antibiotic administration in these situations might reduce the time to treatment has not been previously reported. The purpose of this study was to describe current prehospital use of antibiotics for traumatic injury, to assess the safety of prehospital antibiotic administration, and to estimate the potential time-savings associated with antibiotic administration by EMS clinicians. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of the 2019 through 2022 ESO Data Collaborative research data set. Included subjects were patients that had a linked ICD-10 code indicating an open extremity fracture and who received prehospital antibiotics. Time to antibiotic administration was calculated as the elapsed time from EMS dispatch until antibiotic administration. The minimum potential time saved by EMS antibiotic administration was calculated as the elapsed time from administration until ED arrival. To assess safety, epinephrine and diphenhydramine administration were used as proxies for the adverse events of anaphylaxis and minor allergic reactions. Results: There were 523 patients meeting the inclusion criteria. The median (and interquartile range [IQR]) elapsed time from EMS dispatch until antibiotic administration was 31 (IQR: 24-41) minutes. The median potential time savings associated with prehospital antibiotic administration was 15 (IQR: 8-22) minutes. Notably, 144 (27.5%) of the patients who received prehospital antibiotics had total prehospital times exceeding one hour. None of the patients who received antibiotics also received epinephrine for presumed anaphylaxis. Conclusions: EMS clinicians were able to safely administer antibiotics to patients with open fractures a median of 15 min before arrival at the hospital, and 99% of the patients receiving antibiotics had them administered within one hour of EMS dispatch. For decades, scholars have sought to understand individuals' identification with sport teams. As a result, we have great knowledge of how team identification influences a variety of attitudinal and behavioral outcomes as well as the impact of identifying with a team on an individual's sense of self. However, nearly all studies of team identification have dealt with men's sport rather than women's sport. The authors addressed this issue in the current study by using the Delphi technique to solicit expert opinion on the lack of team identification research in women's sport, including reasons for the lack of research, the extent to which context matters in studying team identification, and potential contributions to the team identification literature by examining the concept in women's sport settings. The authors conclude by discussing experts' opinions, the extent to which some views may underpin the lack of research, and implications for future studies of team identification.
