The multicenter, open-label GRECO study (NCT02918071) assessed functionality and reliability of a single-use autoinjector (AI) for at-home benralizumab administration by patients or their caregivers.Patients and methods: Adults with severe asthma received benralizumab SC injections at the study site at Weeks 0, 4, and 8. The first dose was administered by health care providers. Patients/caregivers had the option of administering the second dose and were required to administer the third dose under supervision. At Weeks 12 and 16, patients/caregivers administered benralizumab via AI at home. After each administration, patients/caregivers completed questionnaires concerning administration and device functioning. All AI devices used were returned for evaluation.Results: A total of 595 AIs were used for 121 patients (mean age 48.5 years; 64% female) in the clinic and at home. Of 116 participants, 113 (97.4%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 92.63–99.46) and 112 (96.6%; 95% CI: 91.41–99.05) successfully administered benralizumab at home at Weeks 12 and 16, respectively; 108 (93.1%; 95% CI: 86.86–96.98) were successful on both occasions. Abstract

Most literature on symmetry perception has focused on bilateralreflection symmetry with some suggesting that it isthe only type of symmetry humans can perceive (Wilson &Wilkinson, 2002). Using image stimuli generated from themathematically well-defined seventeen wallpaper groups, thisstudy demonstrates that humans can discriminate various symmetriesfound in 2D wallpaper patterns (Liu, Hel-Or, Kaplan,Van Gool, et al., 2010). Furthermore, the results demonstratethe features which contribute to wallpaper pattern perception.All wallpaper groups but one were found to be reliably distinguishable(p < 0:05). Additionally, as wallpaper patterns canbe arranged in a hierarchy, we propose a metric to quantify thesimilarity of their perception using the shortest path in this hierarchy.This subgroup distance was found to be a factor in alikely model of pattern perception.

Abstract

We examine working memory use and incrementality using a cognitive model of grammatical encoding. Our model combines an empirically validated framework, ACT-R, with a linguistic theory, Combinatory Categorial Grammar, to target that phase of language production. By building the model with the Switchboard corpus, it can attempt to realize a larger set of sentences. With this methodology, different strategies may be compared according to the similarity of the model’s sentences to the test sentences. In this way, the model can still be evaluated by its fit to human data, without overfitting to individual experiments. The results show that while having more working memory available improves performance, using less working memory during realization is correlated with a closer fit, even after controlling for sentence complexity. Further, sentences realized with a more incremental strategy are also more similar to the corpus sentences as measured by edit distance. As high incrementality is correlated with low working memory usage, this study offers a possible mechanism by which incrementality can be explained.

We evaluated whether three doses of benralizumab modifies antibody response to seasonal influenza vaccination for adolescent/young adult patients with moderate to severe asthma.Methods: ALIZE (NCT02814643) was a Phase IIIb randomized controlled trial of patients aged 12–21 years receiving medium- to high-dosage inhaled corticosteroids/long-acting β2-agonists. Patients received benralizumab 30 mg or placebo at Weeks 0, 4, and 8, plus tetravalent influenza vaccination at Week 8. At Week 12, strain-specific antibody responses following vaccination were assessed for four influenza antigens by hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) and microneutralization (MN) assays.Results: A total of 103 patients were randomized and received benralizumab (n=51) or placebo (n=52). There were no consistent differences in HAI or MN antibody responses at Week 12 between patients receiving benralizumab or placebo. HAI geometric mean fold rises (GMFRs) for all influenza strains tested were 3.3–4.2 for benralizumab vs 3.4–3.9 for placebo; MN GMFRs were 2.8–5.1 for benralizumab vs 3.2–4.4 for placebo. Abstract

Armed conflicts around the world produce displacement, injury, and death. This study examines how anonymous and pseudonymous Internet commenters discuss such conflicts. Specifically, we ask how permissible it is to express positive or negative sentiments about these conflicts as a function of variables including region, conflict nature, and severity. Data from the Armed Conflicts Database is aggregated to identify a number of potential factors that may influence views on acceptable sentiments. A large-scale sample of the Reddit comment forum was coded for positive and negative sentiments using sentiment analysis techniques. Permissibility is judged using the Reddit voting features. Regressions reveal that positive sentiments are found not permissible for higher numbers of fatalities, and that negative sentiments are found permissible for certain regions, more permissible for older conflicts, and less permissible for territorial conflicts. A number of alternative, noncorrelated predictors are presented.

Abstract

This paper explores the time course of lexical memory retrieval by modeling fluent language production. The duration of retrievals is predicted using the ACT-R cognitive architecture. In a large-scale observational study of a spoken corpus, we find that language production at a time point preceding a word is sped up or slowed down depending on activation of that word. This computational analysis has consequences for the theoretical model of language production. The data point to interference between lexical and phonological stages as well as a quantifiable buffer for lexical information.

Abstract

This study examines how novel words originate in and disperse through online communities. It asks whether larger numbers of people or closer social ties are better environments to foster the adoption of new words. The data stem from Reddit, a large sample of web-mediated, asynchronous conversations. Reddit communities are divided by size in this study: larger communities are based on discussing general topics and have weak social ties, whereas small communities are based on discussing specific topics and have strong social ties. The analysis shows that the majority of new words are created / first adopted in larger communities.

81. The Power and Peril of Global Professionalization: The Global Knowledge Economy, The World Bank, and Higher Education

Abstract

Since 1962, the World Bank has involved itself in higher education discourse and practice through the provision of loans and grants to developing nations. Initially, such involvement focused primarily on tangible infrastructure projects such as building schools and providing textbooks for students. Over time, however, the Bank has increasingly come to involve itself in less tangible projects such as policy work, technical assistance, and educational discourse ? including the creation of the imaginary of the Global Knowledge Economy (GKE). Through this increased focus on higher education policy and discourse, the Bank has come to wield increasing authority over the discourse of knowledge and its means of production. In order to better elucidate the rising authority of the World Bank over higher education and discourses of knowledge production, this dissertation explores the historical development of the Bank?s work in higher education broadly, as well as in two specific countries, Morocco and Indonesia. The dissertation studies the Bank?s involvement in higher education through a critical historical method, which combines traditional historical analysis with a critical policy studies lens. Through this analysis, I argue that the authority of the World Bank over the discourse and practice of higher education and knowledge production has increased significantly through time due to the Bank?s role in the creation of a new global profession of higher education economists, and that this increased authority reveals an underlying irony in the Bank?s thinking and operations. The irony is that the Bank relies upon a fundamental belief in the power of free markets in the economic sphere, but increasingly deploys methods of centralized planning over higher education and knowledge production through these new professionals. This profession is allowed to flourish in part because the Bank and the GKE both exist within a global realm in which the global public sphere has not been clarified. This dissertation adds to the historical record of the Bank?s involvement in higher education discourse, policy and practice, while also exploring the need for more robust theories of the public sphere and for alternative views of knowledge and education at the global level.

Abstract

Objectives—To assess the level of cycle helmet wearing among young people in two counties in the South East of England in 1994, and to identify the factors associated with helmet wearing. \ud \ud Design—Cross sectional survey in a convenience sample. \ud Setting—Secondary schools in East Sussex and Kent. \ud Subjects—Students in year 7 (aged 10–12 years) and year 11 (aged 14–16 years). \ud Main outcome measures—Self reported “always wears a helmet”. \ud Results—Among those who ride a bicycle, 32% of boys and 29% of girls aged 10–12 years, and 14% of boys and 10% of girls aged 14–16, reported that they always wear helmets. The variables that were most consistently associated with helmet wearing (that is significantly associated with helmet wearing in at least five of the six age, sex, and county subgroups) were: “parental encouragement to wear a helmet”, “closest friend wears a helmet”, “belief that laws that make children wear helmets are good”, and “sometimes rides off-road”. \ud \ud Conclusions—The self reported rates of always wearing a cycle helmet in East Sussex and Kent are consistent with overseas findings for populations who had not been exposed to intensive helmet promotion. The evidence suggests that parental encouragement has a favourable effect on rates of cycle helmet use among secondary schoolchildren, which is separate from and additional to peer influences. When designing a helmet promotion programme, therefore, it will have added impact if both parents and children are addressed.

Rather, it was careful to conclude that, under the specifics facts asserted by plaintiff - perhaps most notably that he reported he was feeling better and was able to return to work before even receiving his COVID-19 test results - the plaintiff did not have a qualifying disability under the LAD. As a preliminary matter, other laws, including the Family and Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, New Jersey Earned Sick Leave Law, and potentially the New Jersey Family Leave Act, could apply to afford employees who contract COVID-19 certain employment protections. In what appears to be the first time, the New Jersey Appellate Division considered whether contracting COVID-19 or exhibiting its symptoms is sufficient for an employee to claim they qualify as an individual with a disability or a perceived disability under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD), concluding that - at least in this instance - the employee did not qualify. 98. Dropping the Ball: How the Commissioner's Exercise of His "Best Interests" Authority is Failing the NFL and What Can Be Done About It.

Abstract

The NFL Commissioner has had the authority to punish players for "conduct detrimental to the integrity of, or public confidence in, the game of football" since 1960. Yet, he first exercised this "best interests" disciplinary authority to punish a player for a non-gamblingrelated off-the-field offense in 2002. Since then, the NFL Commissioner has issued over fifty separate disciplinary decisions for players' off-the-field conduct. In the process, the NFL Commissioner's implementation of this broad power has come under fire, with critics claiming that the NFL Commissioner's decisions are inconsistent, unpredictable, and unfair to the players. In response to these criticisms, the current NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, passed a series of Personal Conduct Policies. This Article details the history of the NFL Commissioner's "best interests" power, including the recent Personal Conduct Policies. It then describes the NFL's three high-profile scandals of the 2014-15 season-Ray Rice's domestic violence case, Adrian Peterson's excessive child discipline, and the New England Patriots' DeflateGate controversy-in order to explore the problems with how the NFL Commissioner exercises his "best interests" power. This Article then offers a solution: the "Independent Adjudicatory Committee" system. Under this proposal, the NFL Commissioner would take on a prosecutorial role and leave disciplinary decision-making authority to an independent committee of former judges. These judges would adjudicate charges brought by the NFL Commissioner in the form of written opinions, determining the appropriate punishments for various violations and offering much-needed clarity with respect to what constitutes conduct detrimental to the game. This proposal would fix many of the issues with the current system by distancing the NFL Commissioner from the decision-makers and by creating a reliable common law for NFL discipline.
