The recent establishment of a 1 μg/g safety threshold for melamine in infant foods has led to an immediate need for more sensitive methods. Here we established GC-MS conditions for highly reproducible analyses and evaluated the effectiveness of both solvent-based and matrix-matched standards. The course and treatment of two patients with otomycosis due to Coccidioides immitis, believed to be the first such cases reported, are described. Both infections appeared due to reactivation of hematogenously disseminated foci. Local and systemic chemotherapy plus surgery resulted in remission, and host immune response also appears to be an important factor. One patient, with systemic lupus erythematosus, required more extensive surgery, more chemotherapy, and reduction in steroid dose to arrest the disease. A combined surgical and chemotherapeutic approach appears necessary when otomycosis is due to invasive fungi such as C immitis.(Arch Intern Med 138:1434-1435, 1978)

The article examines the applicability of split injection to semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) analysis using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Method 8270D performance analysis. It analyzes 40% of semivolatiles samples per shift using split injection in comparison to the typical splitless injection. It demonstrates sample throughput for SVOC analysis which indicates that this can be increased by using split injection with higher initial temperature and faster cycle time.

Practical applications of fast gas chromatography (GC) with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) are presented. A narrow-bore column (0.10-mm i.d.) is used to analyze over 100 specific polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in an Aroclor mix and a sediment sample in 10.5 min. Sample preparation is minimized for the sediment to more closely match the speed advantage gained by using fast GC-TOFMS. The possibility of using a 0.53-mm-i.d. column operated under vacuum-outlet conditions for fast GC-TOFMS is established for Aroclors and a suite of environmental contaminants. Fast acquisition rates and automated peak-find and spectral deconvolution capabilities are demonstrated for TOFMS.
