61. Evaluation of a brief intervention within a stepped care whole of service model for personality disorder

Abstract

Background Although there is growing evidence that stepped models of care are useful for providing appropriate, person centered care, there are very few studies applied to personality disorders. A brief, four session, psychological treatment intervention for personality disorder within a whole of service stepped care model was evaluated. The intervention stepped between acute emergency crisis mental health services and longer-term outpatient treatments. Methods Study 1 used service utilization data from 191 individuals referred to the brief intervention at a single community health site in a metropolitan health service. Proportions of individuals retained across the intervention and the referral pathways accessed following the intervention were examined. Study 2 examined 67 individuals referred to the brief intervention across 4 different sites in metropolitan health services. A range of measures of symptoms and quality of life were administered at the first and last session of the intervention. Effect sizes were calculated to examine mean changes across the course of the intervention. Results Study 1 found that 84.29% of individuals referred to the intervention attended at least 1 session, 60.21% attended 2 sessions or more and 41.89% attended 3 or more sessions. 13.61% of the sample required their care to be "stepped up" within the service, whereas 29.31% were referred to other treatment providers following referral to the intervention. Study 2 found a significant reduction in borderline personality disorder symptom severity and distress following the intervention, and an increase in quality of life. The largest reduction was found for suicidal ideation (d = 1.01). Conclusions Brief psychological intervention was a useful step between acute services and longer-term treatments in this stepped model of care for personality disorder. 62. Academic journals' usernames and the threat of fraudulent accounts on social media

Abstract

The internet has brought both benefits and risks for academia. Predatory publishing and conferences are well‐known, and less common academic cybercrime has also been identified, such as fraudulent conferences and journal hijacking. This study aimed to explore one further possible method for deceiving academics, namely, fraudulent accounts on social media. The study focused on two easily exploitable gaps in journals' social media engagement: whether journals have accounts on the most common social media platforms and whether journals use the same username across all their accounts. Evidence of fraudulent social media accounts was also sought. Drawing from a sample of 50 journals, the results indicate that many journals do not use social media, journals often use multiple usernames and fewer than half the accounts were officially verified. Some apparently fraudulent activity was found, but this was notably limited in scope and appeared to be politically rather than economically oriented. Further potential for deception was evident in accounts unaffiliated with a journal but registered with the journal's usernames and in the opportunity to create new social media accounts with journals' usernames. Journals are recommended to recognize this threat and some possible countermeasures are suggested.

Abstract

This study investigated whether basic details of the research process are mentioned in social science research articles. Five hundred empirical articles were sampled from the Social Sciences Citation Index. The frequency of omitted details was mixed. For central essential details, omission rates were: 0% for research purpose, 2% for data collection method, 8% for sample size, 20% for data analysis method, and 48% for sampling strategy. The analysis found that 56% of articles were missing one or more of these five details. For more peripheral details, omission rates were: 36% for limitations, 55% for ethical considerations, and 94% for foundational philosophy. Prevalence rates were varied when compared across different disciplines and between qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches. Possible causes for these findings include the use of secondary data, the view that certain details are not essential, and traditions in ethnographic writing. Those involved in academic publishing are invited to reflect on the basic details that are essential for their specialism and how reporting standards are enforced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Opinion dynamics is the study of how large groups interact with one another and reach consensus, with applications to various areas such as computer networks, politics, and sociology. It is typically explored using agent-based modelling, with a wide variety of available models. Numerous opinion dynamics models have been proposed, but it has been pointed out that there is a lack of a shared framework.We extend earlier attempts and provide a unified framework. The advantages of such a framework include the reduction of duplication and the identification of unexplored parameter space. Our framework is implemented in a modular simulator which is then used to verify the validity of the framework.We show that the modular approach we propose is able to perfectly replicate results from purpose-built, stand-alone simulators for two widely used models, namely Relative Agreement and CODA.

Abstract

Full end-to-end text recognition in natural images is a challenging problem that has received much attention recently. Traditional systems in this area have relied on elaborate models incorporating carefully hand-engineered features or large amounts of prior knowledge. In this paper, we take a different route and combine the representational power of large, multilayer neural networks together with recent developments in unsupervised feature learning, which allows us to use a common framework to train highly-accurate text detector and character recognizer modules. Then, using only simple off-the-shelf methods, we integrate these two modules into a full end-to-end, lexicon-driven, scene text recognition system that achieves state-of-the-art performance on standard benchmarks, namely Street View Text and ICDAR 2003. Abstract

Helicopters have highly stochastic, nonlinear, dynamics, and autonomous helicopter flight is widely regarded to be a challenging control problem. As helicopters are highly unstable at low speeds, it is particularly difficult to design controllers for low speed aerobatic maneuvers. In this paper, we describe a successful application of reinforcement learning to designing a controller for sustained inverted flight on an autonomous helicopter. Using data collected from the helicopter in flight, we began by learning a stochastic, nonlinear model of the helicopter's dynamics. Then, a reinforcement learning algorithm was applied to automatically learn a controller for autonomous inverted hovering. Abstract

This paper describes an algorithm that tracks and localizes a helicopter using a ground-based trinocular camera array. The three cameras are placed independently in an arbitrary arrangement that allows each camera to view the helicopter's flight volume. The helicopter then flies an unplanned path that allows the cameras to self-survey utilizing an algorithm based on structure from motion and bundle adjustment. This yields the camera's extrinsic parameters allowing for real-time positioning of the helicopter's position in a camera array based coordinate frame. In fielded experiments, there is less than a 2m RMS tracking error and the update rate of 20Hz is comparable to DGPS update rates. This system has successfully been integrated with an IMU to provide a positioning system for autonomous hovering.
