Clothing comfort is determined by multiple material and design factors. Wetness at the skin-clothing interface mainly impacts wear comfort. The current study investigated the combined effect of fabric contact area, fabric absolute sweat content and fabric moisture saturation percentage on wetness and stickiness sensations, during exercise. Moreover, factors causing wear (dis)comfort during exercise were identified. Higher fabric saturation percentage induced greater stickiness sensation, despite lower fabric contact area and absolute sweat content (typically associated with lower stickiness). Wetness perception did not change between fabrics with different saturation percentages, contact areas and sweat contents. Therefore, fabric saturation percentage mainly affects stickiness sensation of wet fabrics, overruling the impact of fabric contact area and absolute sweat content. No overall model of wear discomfort across all data could be developed, however, models for different time points were produced, with texture and stickiness sensations being the best predictors of wear discomfort at baseline and during exercise, respectively. In this study, we addressed potential biases which can occur when sensorial scores of temperature, wetness and discomfort are repeatedly reported, in transient exercise conditions. We pointed out that, when repeatedly reported, previous sensorial scores can be set by the participants as reference values and the subsequent score may be given based on the previous point of reference, the latter phenomenon leading to a bias which we defined as ‘anchoring bias’. Indeed, the findings shown that subsequent sensorial scores are prone to anchoring biases and that the bias consisted in a systematically higher magnitude of sensation as compared to when reported a single time only. As such, the study allowed recognition, quantification and mitigation of the identified bias which can improve the methodological rigour of research studies involving assessments of sensorial data in transient conditions. Son yıllarda tüketicilerin tekstil ürünlerinden beklentilerinin artması ve giysi tercihlerinde konforun ön sıralarda yer almaya başlamasıyla birlikte araştırmacılar ile tekstil ve hazır giyim üreticileri daha konforlu giysi sistemlerinin geliştirilmesi konusuna yoğunlaşmışlardır. Yapay sinir ağları sistemleri ise bu gelişmelere katkıda bulunmaya çalışan araştırma teknikleri arasında yer almaktadır.Literatürde, çeşitli kumaş parametreleri ile giyim konforu arasındaki ilişkiyi analiz etmek amacıyla istatistiksel yöntemler kullanılarak birçok araştırma yapılmıştır. Ancak kullanılan istatistiksel yöntemlerde bazı kısıtlamalar bulunmaktadır. İstatistiksel modellemede karşılaşılan en yaygın problemlerden birisi giyim konforunu etkileyen farklı parametrelerin giyim konforu ile doğrusal olmayan ilişkisidir. Yapay sinir ağları sistemleri bütün parametrelerin ortaklaşa etkisini göz önünde bulundurarak tahminleme yapmaya çalışan yöntemlerden bir tanesi olarak bilinmektedir.Bu çalışma kapsamında giyim konforunun tahminlenmesinde yapay sinir ağları sistemlerinin kullanımına yönelik bir literatür araştırması yapılmıştır.

A special design of clothing based on 'sombrero-effect' by inclined wedge providing shadow on the base material has been proposed and investigated analytically in this study to improve the thermo-physiological comfort under dry and hot environment. The design involves small strips of opaque surface on the base fabric of the outerwear to provide tiny shadows at an inclination. The analysis of the heat and mass transfer in the proposed design enables numerical prediction of cooling heat flow at skin surface level. The predicted values are then compared with experimental data by simulating the conditions using a vertical skin model. The effects of certain material properties, particularly the colour of fabric and type of fibre have been studied and the role of the important design parameter, such as 'shade angle' or the angle of inclined strips has been investigated experimentally. Many researches have been carried out to analyze the wicking behavior of the knitted fabric based on different principles. In this study, an investigation on wicking behavior of knitted fabrics under different deformation condition is attempted. An instrument has been designed and developed to measure the wicking rate of the fabric based on the principle of image processing technique under dynamic states with respect to time by simulating different movements. This instrument has been aimed to quantify the rate of wicking under different deformations in required time intervals and also the pattern of wicking area on both sides of fabric simultaneously. The statistical result shows that wicking in fabric under dynamic condition has been increased significantly on the knitted fabrics than the static condition. The comparative study of wicking trend at the front and back has been carried out and shows that the area of wicking is higher in front than back side of the fabric at any given period of time. The result shows that wicking in fabric under dynamic condition has been increased significantly on all the knitted fabric. The developed novel instrument could be utilized to carry out the study of the wicking behavior of any kind of fabrics matching to the real situation with higher accuracy and precision. Doğumla birlikte başlayan örtünme ihtiyacı, zaman içerisinde estetik gayesiyle çeşitlenmişve farklıgiysi gruplarıoluşmuştur. İç giyim, dışgiyim, üst giyim, özel amaçlıgiyim olarak sınıflandırılan bu giysiler arasında, sağlığıkoruyan, dışgiyime iyi bir görünüm kazandıran iç giyim ise günümüzde olduğu gibi geçmişte de önemli bir yere sahipti. Türk kültürünün önemli örneklerini oluşturan, sanatsal özellikteki geleneksel giysiler arasında, Konya iline ait kadın iç giyimleri de yansıttıklarıözellikler bakımından seçkin konumdadır. Ancak, geleneksel ve çağdaşkadın iç giyimleri giysi konforu açısından önemli özellikler sergilerken, üst ve dışgiyimdeki değişimin iç giyime de yansımasıyla, geçmişte kullanılanlar ile günümüzde kullanılanlar arasında farklılıklar olduğu gözlenmiştir. Bu farklılıkların giysi konforu açısından belirlenmesi ve karşılaştırılmasıamacıyla yapılan bu çalışmada betimsel yöntem kullanılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında beşadet Konya merkez geleneksel kadın iç giyimi, beşadet çağdaşkadın iç giyimi ele alınmışve kullanılan malzeme, renk, uygulanan model ve kesim, üretim yöntemi ve dikiştekniği, süsleme tekniği gibi ergonomik özellikler gözlem fişleri aracılığıile incelenmiş, fotoğraflarla görsel olarak belgelenmiştir. Giysilerin ergonomik özellikleri dikkate alınarak tablolar oluşturulmuş, gözlem fişlerinden elde edilen bilgiler tablolara aktarılmıştır. Tablolardan elde edilen veriler ışığında sonuca ulaşılmaya çalışılmışve bazıönerilerde bulunulmuştur.

Drying properties of textiles in summer and/or after any kind of physical activity resulted in sweating is of great importance for garments with high clothing comfort. This study analyzes the drying behavior of knitted fabrics produced from various fibers at different ambient air conditions. Drying kinetics and modeling of fabrics dried in standard environmental conditions were investigated in the first part. Polyester and lyocell fabrics were found to be the fastest drying samples. A two-stage modeling that is a combination of linear approach and thin-layer equations was used, and the best fitted equation was found to be the logarithmic one. The two-stage model was also proved to predict the drying rate. The second part included the effects of ambient humidity on drying times and rates. Drying time of polyester and polyester blended fabrics was affected by the increase in the humidity to a great extent. Furthermore, a quadratic function was found to be highly correlated with the computed data, so it was proposed to define the drying behavior by ambient air humidity and drying time. The presented contribution deals with the possibilities of objective evaluation of functional utility properties of membranes made by reputable producers. There are many international norms and standards for evaluation of functional textiles and membranes. The article describes the most fundamental principles of objective testing of functional membrane textiles under accurately defined conditions in compliance with the international ISO standards and it deals with the requirements for their basic evaluation. In the theoretical part, the principles of functioning of individual types of membranes are described. For mutual comparison, the individual types of membranes are depicted using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) technology. The most significant evaluation criterion in functional membranes is evaluation of water vapour permeability but only in common evaluation and comparison with another important membrane functional property - water column. Based on the results of the experimental part, it is evident that only by comparing these two fundamental properties, designed membrane textile can be evaluated partially and recommended for its utilization in tough conditions, under which the user expects maximum comfort of the clothing. This study aims to achieve high comfort characteristics in medical corsets. For this aim, initially the expectations of users were determined by a survey and special yarns have been selected according to the survey responses. Then, different corset fabrics have been designed in a functional structure. Later, the most important body movement (stretchability), sensorial (bending rigidity) and thermophysiological comfort (air permeability, water vapour permeability, and thermal resistance) properties of these fabrics were tested and evaluated statistically. The results revealed that high levels of clothing comfort and performance properties can be established by different yarn types and fabric compositions and this will lead to achieve a successful medical therapy. Fabric liquid dynamic transport capacity is a significant factor on the influence of human clothing comfort. In this study, we present a new approach to test in-plane liquid dynamic transport in a straightforward one-step procedure. In this method, a textile sample is irradiated by a radiation source during wetting. Meanwhile, the optical energy of the transmitted ray is transformed to voltage by a detector and is dynamically recorded by a computer. Eventually, the liquid spread speed and maximum absorption rate of the textile material are defined and obtained on the basis of the voltage. Compared with the standard instrument, the Moisture Management Tester, this new method provides more accurate measuring results for liquid spreading speeds and could be applicable for almost all liquid testing except for volatile fluid. In this study, a clothing comfort of straight jeans with different rize size was evaluated by only tactile sensation of male university students in their twenties during the squatting position. And clothing pressures at the knee, thigh and hip points were measured by the air-pack sensor system. The relationship between the sensory values for clothing comfort and clothing pressures at four points was studied by means of the correlation analysis. The results are as follows.(1)Sample(+2cm) whose rise size was longer than the standard sample was evaluated “comfortable” by them, (2)The “comfortable” feeling has a negative correlation with “tenseness and tightness” feelings at the knee point and the “tenseness” feeling at the inner thigh point. Purpose – The aim of this study is to investigate wearing comfort of summer work uniforms judged by construction workers. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 189 male construction workers participated in a series of wear trials and questionnaire surveys in the summer of 2014. They were asked to randomly wear two types of work uniforms (i.e. uniforms A and B) in the two-day field survey and the subjective attributes of these uniforms were assessed. Three analytical techniques, namely, multiple regression, artificial neural network and fuzzy logic were used to predict wearing comfort affected by the six subjective sensations. Findings – The results revealed that fuzzy logic was a robust and practical tool for predicting wearing comfort in terms of better prediction performance and more interpretable results than the other models. Pressure attributes were further found to exert a greater effect than thermal–wet attributes on wearing comfort. Overall, the use of uniform B exhibited profound benefits on wearing comfort because it kept workers cooler, drier and more comfortable with less work performance interference than wearing uniform A. Originality/value – The findings provide a fresh insight into construction workers’ needs for work clothes, which further facilitates the improvement in the clothing tailor-made design and the enhancement of the well-being of workers. In recent years, with the increasing of consumers' expectations from textile products, researchers and producers of textile and apparel sectors focused on development of comfortable clothing systems. Artificial neural networks systems are research techniques that are trying to contribute to these developments. There are a lot of researches in literature about analysing relationship between clothing comfort and parameters of fabrics using statistical methods. On the other hand, there are some limitations in using them. One of the most common problems encountered in statistical modelling is non-linear relationship between clothing comfort and the parameters of fabrics. Artificial neural networks systems are known trying to make prediction considering all the impact of the parameters together. Choosing right fabrics for a product is of great importance to the textile and garment manufacturing, and retailing industries. The choice depends on the quality and the performance characteristics of the fabric and how they are related to the end-use of the product. Comfort is one of the vital functional properties of textile fabrics meant for apparel purpose. There are broadly two aspects of wear comfort namely thermophysiological wear comfort and skin sensorial wear comfort. This overall clothing comfort is predictable, and can be engineered in the final textile fabrics by using various modeling techniques such as hard computing and soft computing tools. Thermo-physiological comfort in clothing mainly lies in moisture management, which often refers to the transport of both moisture vapor and liquid away from the body. Moisture management of fabrics is chiefly influenced by the thermal properties of those fabrics. In spite of the convincing properties that synthetic fabrics have, they are not much preferred because of their hydrophobic nature which provides less comfort to the wearer compared to the natural fabrics like cotton, wool, and silk. Previous studies report that the herbal finishes, which are eco-friendly in nature, improve the anti-microbial and other medicinal properties but very little or no work has been carried out on the comfort aspect of these fabrics. This work reports a study of the influence of two ecofriendly herbal finishes, Neem and Bermuda grass, on the thermo-physiological comfort properties of synthetic fabrics used in clothing. The herbal finishes were applied on to 100% Polyester and 50/50 Polyester/Acrylic blended fabrics. Prior to the application of finishes, the fabrics were given a pretreatment to achieve a better penetration and durability of the finishes. The finished fabrics were tested for the thermo-physiological comfort properties of Wicking, Water vapor permeability, and Thermal conductivity and the results were analyzed. It was revealed that both the Neem and Bermuda grass natural finishes considerably improved the moisture related properties and moderately reduced the thermal conductivity characteristics of the above synthetic fabrics. This study aims to investigate the influence of double-layer clothing in a semiconductor manufacturing clean-room environment. Twenty subjects including ten males and ten females participated in this study. Each subject completed four treatment combinations with four different inner pieces of clothing (i.e., 100% cotton, 70% cotton + 30% polyester, 65% polyester + 35% cotton, 100% polyester). The dependent measures included moisture absorption, skin temperature, and subjective responses in three body regions. The results indicate that wearing 100% polyester inner clothing caused a significant increase in inner microclimate relative humidity (RH; p < .01). Wearing 100% cotton inner clothing caused a significant increase in both inner microclimate RH ( p < .01) and the inner clothing's moisture absorption. This was due to cotton fiber tends to trap more water molecules and allow less water vapor to pass through as compared to other types of fiber. Furthermore, wearing the blended fiber inner clothing caused lower RH in the inner and outer clothing microclimate ( p < .05). Moreover, wearing 65% polyester + 35% cotton inner clothing had higher subjective comfort than did wearing 70% cotton + 30% polyester. Sport is a necessary element for maintaining life in a healthier and more balanced way. There has been a rising trend of wearing sportswear in daily life besides sports. Developments in technology have raised expectations from sportswear. Individuals expect not only durability, design and being fashionable, but also demand performance and clothing comfort. This study aims to investigate university students’ awareness while buying sportswear. Professional sportsmen from Physical Education and Sports School students and Textile Engineering students having technical knowledge about clothes are included in this study. 100 students from each group were interviewed face to face. Results showed that Textile Engineering students pay more attention to technical characteristics due to their knowledge, however, aesthetic properties are revealed to be another important factor affecting buying decision. Buying decision of Physical Education and Sports School students is expected to be positively affected if they are given a seminar about raw material properties.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore physical limitations and clothing problems among women with Rheumatoid arthritis and designing functional clothing according to their needs. Design: This study is designed to be qualitative in nature, where the researcher explores case studies of adult female with rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore qualitative methods were used, employing data collection by in-depth interviews and observations. Period: The study was conducted in 2010-2012 in Lahore. Material & Methods: The present study gives a clear picture about clothing problems while donning and doffing, of adult females with rheumatoid arthritis and the need for adaptive clothing. Research process comprised of assessing clothing needs, providing comfort while donning and doffing through co-designing and evaluating comfort of an adaptive garment after wear trail of three weeks. The researcher did a detailed thematic analysis using predetermined codes to aid analysis, of all the information gathered from three female participants of the study. The researcher found what was missing in the clothing that the participants wore in their regular lives, and worked with them to find out what they wanted in the adaptive clothing that provides them comfort. Results: The adaptive clothing was a successful mean to satisfy the participant's needs and preferences in a better way. It was also found that the co-designing of the final product was a very effective means of doing so; adaptive clothing can offer arthritis women an easy, time saving and pain free way to dress. By immersion of the human body in very cold water, hypothermia occurs, followed by a incapacity of resistance to cold water and, in a very short period of time, a sensation of cold is felt at muscle and nerve level, thus losing the capacity of self-rscue and swimming. Another consequence of hypothermia is the risc of ventricular fibrilation and cardiac arrest.Similar costumes/ suits are made out of Lycra, ensuring it fits the figure, also its flotability and comfort. Another type of material, that protects swimmers during harsh meteorological and cold water conditions is neoprene. The paper presents studies regarding different clothing structures assigned to swimming and rescueing suits on the sea, in order to establish an optimal structure, providing human body comfort and protection. These are intended for the personnel from navy petroleum industry, by using them during transportation by hellicopter or by ship to the drilling platform and for rescue in case of damage. For these reasons they should assure sea water impermeability, decreased thermal conductibility, strength to diluted solutions of petroleum-chemical products, reduced flammability level, mobility and flotability, as well as dressing in a short time. This study was conducted to investigate comfort and microbial protection performances of two reusable and two disposable surgical gowns by subjective wear trials conducted on eight healthy Dentistry faculty students under environmental conditions suitable for a surgical operation. Protection performances of the gowns were tested by a modified bacterial resistance test. Physiological and psychological data were obtained during wear trials. All objective and subjective results were evaluated in the light of standard physical, mechanical, permeability, and resistance (thermal and water vapor) characteristics of the fabrics. According to the results, thermal comfort performance of the woven gown produced from microfiber polyester was the best according to subjective wear trial and microbial resistance test results. Disposable nonwoven gowns had lower comfort performances despite their higher permeability and lower resistance values. Moreover, chest skin temperature, arm microclimate temperature, and arm relative humidity are the physiological parameters significantly correlated with subjective comfort evaluation results. In this research, thermophysiological properties for knitted fabrics made from cotton and merinowool were investigated. The results are presented graphically and discussed, and the influence of the type of fibers on thermophysiological properties was observed for both fabrics. Although cotton fabrics are widely and commonly used in tropical weather, but it was found that merinowool fabrics showed enhanced thermophysiological properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was performed to create guidelines for proper fitting of brassieres and pads (prostheses, breast forms) in women after breast cancer surgery. Subjects consisted of 12 women with breast asymmetry after breast cancer surgery; 4 after full mastectomy on the right side, 4 after full mastectomy on the left side and 4 after breast conserving surgery. Data were obtained in each subject wearing her well-fitting brassiere (My Bra) and pad (My Pad) in the Experiment 1, while wearing My Bra with 6 different weight silicone pads with different weights one by one in the Experiment 2. Experiment 1: More than a half of the subjects after full mastectomy complained of shoulder stiffness, lateral unbalance in the laterality and overall pressure sensation on the chest. The center of gravity was located on the diseased side in the most subjects wearing My Bra without pads and shifted to the healthy side after wearing My Bra attached with My Pad. Experiment 2: With an increase in the pad weight, the overall clothing pressure increased especially on the diseased side. The subjects complained of heavy sensation of pads, shoulder stiffness, overall pressure sensation and lateral unbalance in the laterality. Quality sportswear is evaluated through its thermal physiological and ergonomic comfort. In this paper we study the correlation of the mechanical properties of knitwear garments and the ergonomic comfort of clothes. Sportswear is made from different types of materials that can visually seem the same, but when it comes to the mechanical properties that are significantly associated with the fitting of clothes and its deformation during use, there can be significant differences between them. To create a pair of women's cycling pants, the following two kinds of knitwear with the same structural characteristics but with different raw material composition, were used. Two models of women's cycling pants were made from these kinds of knitwear. For making both models of pants, the cutting parts of the same design were used, but with different combinations of knitwear of different elasticity for individual cutting parts, for the purpose of reaching a better ergonomic comfort. The correlation of the mechanical properties of knitwear and the ergonomic comfort of women's cycling trousers was determined through trial wearing and subjective evaluation. Taking into account the study of literature that deals with the issue of comfort sportswear, the mechanical and thermal properties of the used knitwear, and finally the realized trial wearing of female cycling pants, it can be concluded that, in addition to clothing design, the mechanical properties of knitwear and extensibility of materials have a large impact on the ergonomic comfort of the used clothing. Tests have shown that a large contact pressure on certain parts of the body can be reduced by using higher tensile knitwear, as shown in this paper for Model 2. The structural model of cycling pants for Model 2 is the same, and has a significantly increasing functionality and comfort when for the side part of pants instead of ACG-S knitwear we use the ACG-C knitwear, which has a higher extensibility in the transverse direction.
